  • SQL SERVER – Identifying Column Data Type of uniqueidentifier without Querying System Tables

    - by pinaldave
    I love interesting conversations with related to SQL Server. One of my friends Madhivanan always comes up with an interesting point of conversation. Here is one of the conversation between us. I am very confident this blog post will for sure enable you with some new knowledge. Madhi: How do I know if any table has a uniqueidentifier column used in it? Pinal:  I am sure you know that you can do it through some DMV or catalogue views. Madhi: I know that but how can we do that without using DMV or catalogue views? Pinal: Hm… what can I use? Madhi: You can use table name. Pinal: Easy, just say SELECT YourUniqueIdentCol FROM Table. Madhi: Hold on, the question seems to be not clear to you – you do know the name of the column. The matter of the fact, you do not know if the table has uniqueidentifier column. Only information you have is table name. Pinal: Madhi, this seems like you are changing the question when I am close to answer. Madhi: Well, are you clear now? Let me say it again – How do I know if any table has a uniqueidentifier column and what is its value without using any DMV or System Catalogues? Only information you know is table name and you are allowed to return any kind of error if table does not have uniqueidentifier column. Pinal: Do you know the answer? Madhi: Yes. I just wanted to test your knowledge about SQL. Pinal: I will have to think. Let me accept I do not know it right away. Can you share the answer please? Madhi: I won! Here it goes! Pinal: When I have friends like you – who needs enemies? Madhi: (laughter which did not stop for a minute). CREATE TABLE t ( GuidCol UNIQUEIDENTIFIER DEFAULT newsequentialid() ROWGUIDCOL, data VARCHAR(60) ) INSERT INTO t (data) SELECT 'test' INSERT INTO t (data) SELECT 'test1' SELECT $rowguid FROM t DROP TABLE t This is indeed very interesting to me. Please note that this is not the optimal way and there will be many other ways to retrieve uniqueidentifier name and value. What I learned from this was if I am in a rush to check if the table has uniqueidentifier and I do not know the name of the same, I can use SELECT TOP (1) $rowguid and quickly know the name of the column. I can later use the same columnname in my query. Madhi did teach me this new trick. Did you know this? What are other ways to get the check uniqueidentifier column existence in a database? • How to display Sharepoint Data in a Windows Forms Application

    - by Michael M. Bangoy
    In this post I'm going to demonstrate how to retrieve Sharepoint data and display it on a Windows Forms Application. 1. Open Visual Studio 2010 and create a new Project. 2. In the project template select Windows Forms Application. 3. In order to communicate with Sharepoint from a Windows Forms Application we need to add the 2 Sharepoint Client DLL located in c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\ISAPI. 4. Select the Microsoft.Sharepoint.Client.dll and Microsoft.Sharepoint.Client.Runtime.dll. (Your solution should look like the one below) 5. Open the Form1 in design view and from the Toolbox menu Add a Button, TextBox, Label and DataGridView on the form. 6. Next double click on the Load Button, this will open the code view of the form. Add Using statement to reference the Sharepoint Client Library then create two method for the Load Site Title and LoadList. See below:   using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.ComponentModel; using System.Data; using System.Drawing; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Security; using System.Windows.Forms; using SP = Microsoft.SharePoint.Client;   namespace ClientObjectModel {     public partial class Form1 : Form     {         // url of the Sharepoint site         const string _context = "theurlofthesharepointsite";         public Form1()         {             InitializeComponent();         }         private void Form1_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)         {                    }         private void getsitetitle()         {             SP.ClientContext context = new SP.ClientContext(_context);             SP.Web _site = context.Web;             context.Load(_site);             context.ExecuteQuery();             txttitle.Text = _site.Title;             context.Dispose();         }                 private void loadlist()         {             using (SP.ClientContext _clientcontext = new SP.ClientContext(_context))             {                 SP.Web _web = _clientcontext.Web;                 SP.ListCollection _lists = _clientcontext.Web.Lists;                 _clientcontext.Load(_lists);                 _clientcontext.ExecuteQuery();                 DataTable dt = new DataTable();                 DataColumn column;                 DataRow row;                 column = new DataColumn();                 column.DataType = Type.GetType("System.String");                 column.ColumnName = "List Title";                 dt.Columns.Add(column);                 foreach (SP.List listitem in _lists)                 {                     row = dt.NewRow();                     row["List Title"] = listitem.Title;                     dt.Rows.Add(row);                 }                 dataGridView1.DataSource = dt;             }                   }       private void cmdload_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)         {             getsitetitle();             loadlist();          }     } } 7. That’s it. Hit F5 to run the application then click the Load Button. Your screen should like the one below. Hope this helps.

  • How to retrieve Sharepoint data from a Windows Forms Application.

    - by Michael M. Bangoy
    In this demo I'm going to demonstrate how to retrieve Sharepoint data and display it on a Windows Forms Application. That's it we're ready to write our codes. Note: In this example I've added to controls on the form, the controls are Button, TextBox, Label and DataGridView. using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.ComponentModel; using System.Data; using System.Data.Objects; using System.Drawing; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Security; using System.Windows.Forms; using SP = Microsoft.SharePoint.Client; namespace ClientObjectModel { public partial class Form1 : Form { // declare string url of the Sharepoint site string _context = "theurlofyoursharepointsite"; public Form1() { InitializeComponent(); } private void Form1_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { } private void getsitetitle() {    SP.ClientContext context = new SP.ClientContext(_context);    SP.Web _site = context.Web;    context.Load(_site);    context.ExecuteQuery();    txttitle.Text = _site.Title;    context.Dispose(); } private void loadlist() { using (SP.ClientContext _clientcontext = new SP.ClientContext(_context)) {    SP.Web _web = _clientcontext.Web;    SP.ListCollection _lists = _clientcontext.Web.Lists;    _clientcontext.Load(_lists);    _clientcontext.ExecuteQuery();    DataTable dt = new DataTable();    DataColumn column;    DataRow row;    column = new DataColumn();    column.DataType = Type.GetType("System.String");    column.ColumnName = "List Title";    dt.Columns.Add(column);    foreach (SP.List listitem in _lists)    {       row = dt.NewRow();       row["List Title"] = listitem.Title;       dt.Rows.Add(row);    }       dataGridView1.DataSource = dt;    } private void cmdload_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { getsitetitle(); loadlist(); } } That's it. Running the application and clicking the Load Button will retrieve the Title of the Sharepoint site and display it on the TextBox and also it will retrieve ALL of the Sharepoint List on that site and populate the DataGridView with the List Title. Hope this helps. Thank you.

  • How i can add border to ListViewItem, ListView in GridView mode.

    - by Andrew
    Hello! I want to have a border around ListViewItem (row in my case). ListView source and columns generated during Runtime. In XAML i have this structure: <ListView Name="listViewRaw"> <ListView.View> <GridView> </GridView> </ListView.View> </ListView> During Runtime i bind listview to DataTable, adding necessary columns and bindings: var view = (listView.View as GridView); view.Columns.Clear(); for (int i = 0; i < table.Columns.Count; i++) { GridViewColumn col = new GridViewColumn(); col.Header = table.Columns[i].ColumnName; col.DisplayMemberBinding = new Binding(string.Format("[{0}]", i.ToString())); view.Columns.Add(col); } listView.CoerceValue(ListView.ItemsSourceProperty); listView.DataContext = table; listView.SetBinding(ListView.ItemsSourceProperty, new Binding()); So i want to add border around each row, and set border behavior (color etc) with DataTriggers (for example if value in 1st column = "Visible", set border color to black). Can i put border through DataTemplate in ItemTemplate? I know solution, where you manipulate with CellTemplates, but i don't really like it. I want something like this if this even possible. <DataTemplate> <Border Name="Border" BorderBrush="Transparent" BorderThickness="2"> <ListViewItemRow><!-- Put my row here, but i ll know about table structure only during runtime --></ListViewItemRow> </Border> </DataTemplate>

  • asp.net Dynamic Data Site with own MetaData

    - by loviji
    Hello, I'm searching info about configuring own MetaData in asp.NET Dynamic Site. For example. I have a table in MS Sql Server with structure shown below: CREATE TABLE [dbo].[someTable]( [id] [int] NOT NULL, [pname] [nvarchar](20) NULL, [FullName] [nvarchar](50) NULL, [age] [int] NULL) and I there are 2 Ms Sql tables (I've created), sysTables and sysColumns. sysTables: ID sysTableName TableName TableDescription 1 | someTable |Persons |All Data about Persons in system sysColumns: ID TableName sysColumnName ColumnName ColumnDesc ColumnType MUnit 1 |someTable | sometable_pname| Name | Persona Name(ex. John)| nvarchar(20) | null 2 |someTable | sometable_Fullname| Full Name | Persona Name(ex. John Black)| nvarchar(50) | null 3 |someTable | sometable_age| age | Person age| int | null I want that, in Details/Edit/Insert/List/ListDetails pages use as MetaData sysColumns and sysTableData. Because, for ex. in DetailsPage fullName, it is not beatiful as Full Name . someIdea, is it possible? thanks Updated:: In List Page to display data from sysTables (metaData table) I've modified <h2 class="DDSubHeader"><%= tableName%></h2>. public string tableName; protected void Page_Init(object sender, EventArgs e) { table = DynamicDataRouteHandler.GetRequestMetaTable(Context); //added by me uqsikDataContext sd=new uqsikDataContext(); tableName = sd.sysTables.Where(n => n.sysTableName == table.DisplayName).FirstOrDefault().TableName; //end GridView1.SetMetaTable(table, table.GetColumnValuesFromRoute(Context)); GridDataSource.EntityTypeName = table.EntityType.AssemblyQualifiedName; if (table.EntityType != table.RootEntityType) { GridQueryExtender.Expressions.Add(new OfTypeExpression(table.EntityType)); } } so, what about sysColums? How can I get Data from my sysColumns table?

  • How does Subsonic handle connections?

    - by Quintin Par
    In Nhibernate you start a session by creating it during a BeginRequest and close at EndRequest public class Global: System.Web.HttpApplication { public static ISessionFactory SessionFactory = CreateSessionFactory(); protected static ISessionFactory CreateSessionFactory() { return new Configuration() .Configure(Path.Combine(AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory, "hibernate.cfg.xml")) .BuildSessionFactory(); } public static ISession CurrentSession { get{ return (ISession)HttpContext.Current.Items["current.session"]; } set { HttpContext.Current.Items["current.session"] = value; } } protected void Global() { BeginRequest += delegate { CurrentSession = SessionFactory.OpenSession(); }; EndRequest += delegate { if(CurrentSession != null) CurrentSession.Dispose(); }; } } What’s the equivalent in Subsonic? • Reformat SQLGeography polygons to JSON

    - by James
    I am building a web service that serves geographic boundary data in JSON format. The geographic data is stored in an SQL Server 2008 R2 database using the geography type in a table. I use [ColumnName].ToString() method to return the polygon data as text. Example output: POLYGON ((-6.1646509904325884 56.435153006374627, ... -6.1606079906751 56.4338050060666)) MULTIPOLYGON (((-6.1646509904325884 56.435153006374627 0 0, ... -6.1606079906751 56.4338050060666 0 0))) Geographic definitions can take the form of either an array of lat/long pairs defining a polygon or in the case of multiple definitions, an array or polygons (multipolygon). I have the following regex that converts the output to JSON objects contained in multi-dimensional arrays depending on the output. Regex latlngMatch = new Regex(@"(-?[0-9]{1}\.\d*)\s(\d{2}.\d*)(?:\s0\s0,?)?", RegexOptions.Compiled); private string ConvertPolysToJson(string polysIn) { return this.latlngMatch.Replace(polysIn.Remove(0, polysIn.IndexOf("(")) // remove POLYGON or MULTIPOLYGON .Replace("(", "[") // convert to JSON array syntax .Replace(")", "]"), // same as above "{lng:$1,lat:$2},"); // reformat lat/lng pairs to JSON objects } This is actually working pretty well and converts the DB output to JSON on the fly in response to an operation call. However I am no regex master and the calls to String.Replace() also seem inefficient to me. Does anyone have any suggestions/comments about performance of this?

  • More FP-correct way to create an update sql query

    - by James Black
    I am working on access a database using F# and my initial attempt at creating a function to create the update query is flawed. let BuildUserUpdateQuery (oldUser:UserType) (newUser:UserType) = let buf = new System.Text.StringBuilder("UPDATE users SET "); if (oldUser.FirstName.Equals(newUser.FirstName) = false) then buf.Append("SET first_name='").Append(newUser.FirstName).Append("'" ) |> ignore if (oldUser.LastName.Equals(newUser.LastName) = false) then buf.Append("SET last_name='").Append(newUser.LastName).Append("'" ) |> ignore if (oldUser.UserName.Equals(newUser.UserName) = false) then buf.Append("SET username='").Append(newUser.UserName).Append("'" ) |> ignore buf.Append(" WHERE id=").Append(newUser.Id).ToString() This doesn't properly put a , between any update parts after the first, for example: UPDATE users SET first_name='Firstname', last_name='lastname' WHERE id=... I could put in a mutable variable to keep track when the first part of the set clause is appended, but that seems wrong. I could just create an list of tuples, where each tuple is oldtext, newtext, columnname, so that I could then loop through the list and build up the query, but it seems that I should be passing in a StringBuilder to a recursive function, returning back a boolean which is then passed as a parameter to the recursive function. Does this seem to be the best approach, or is there a better one?

  • Getting table schema from a query

    - by Appu
    As per MSDN, SqlDataReader.GetSchemaTable returns column metadata for the query executed. I am wondering is there a similar method that will give table metadata for the given query? I mean what tables are involved and what aliases it has got. In my application, I get the query and I need to append the where clause programically. Using GetSchemaTable(), I can get the column metadata and the table it belongs to. But even though table has aliases, it still return the real table name. Is there a way to get the aliase name for that table? Following code shows getting the column metadata. const string connectionString = "your_connection_string"; string sql = "select c.id as s,c.firstname from contact as c"; using(SqlConnection connection = new SqlConnection(connectionString)) using(SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand(sql, connection)) { connection.Open(); SqlDataReader reader = command.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior.KeyInfo); DataTable schema = reader.GetSchemaTable(); foreach (DataRow row in schema.Rows) { foreach (DataColumn column in schema.Columns) { Console.WriteLine(column.ColumnName + " = " + row[column]); } Console.WriteLine("----------------------------------------"); } Console.Read(); } This will give me details of columns correctly. But when I see BaseTableName for column Id, it is giving contact rather than the alias name c. Is there any way to get the table schema and aliases from a query like the above? Any help would be great!

  • Problem in filtering records using Dataview (C#3.0)

    - by Newbie
    I have a data table . The data table is basically getting populated from excel sheet. And there are many excel sheets. Henceforth, I have written a utility method for accomplishing the same. Now in some of the excel sheets, there are date columns and in some it is not(only text/string). My function is populating the values properly into the datatable from the excell sheet. But there are many blank rows in the excel sheets some are filled with NULL , some with " ". So I need to filter those records (which are NULL or " " ) first before further processing. What I am after is to use a dataview and apply the filter over there. DataView dv = dataTable.DefaultView; dv.RowFilter = ColumnName + " <> ''"; Well by using metedata (GetOleDbSchemaTable(OleDbSchemaGuid.Columns, restrection)) I was able to get the column names from the excel sheet , so getting the column names is not an issue. But the problem is as I said in some Excel sheet there are date fileds some are not. So the Filter condition of the Dataview needs to be proper. If I apply the above logic, and if it encounters a Datafield, it is throwing error Cannot perform '<' operation on System.DateTime and System.String. Could you people please help me out? I need to filter columns(not known at compile time + their data types) which can have NULL and " " I am using C#3.0 Thanks

  • how to use shared variable using stored procedure in crystal reports

    - by sonia
    i have a parent report and it contains a two sub report. * subreport: item which get all fields from store procedure named spGetReportItem. like ItemName ItemQuantity TotalItemCost ab 4 45 dd 6 98 *subreport: Labour which get all fields from store procedure named spGetReportLabour. like labourName labourQuantity TotalLabourCost ab 44 455 dd 63 986 i want to find the total of totalitemcost and total of totallabourcost and then want grandtotal of totalitemcost and totallabourcost. i have seen many examples on internet in which shared variable is used in the formula bt the problem is that they have used the table but i m fetching data from stored procedure. so how can i access the stored procedure fields for calculation. like i have seen that many have used: shared numbervar total:=sum({tablename.ColumnName}); but i have used stored procedure instead of table so how could i find total of field that resultset returns from stored procedure.. plz give me answer as soon as possible.. i need it urgently. thanks..

  • jQuery.ajax() + empty JSON object = parse error

    - by roosteronacid
    I get a parse error when using jQuery to load some JSON data. Here's a snippet of my code: jQuery.ajax({ dataType: "json", success: function (json) { jQuery.each(json, function () { alert(this["columnName"]); }); } }); I get no errors when parsing a non-empty JSON object. So my guess is that the problem is with my serializer. Question is: how do I format an empty JSON object which jQuery won't consider malformed? This is what I've tried so far, with no success: {[]} {[null]} {} {null} {"rows": []} {"rows": null} {"rows": {}} UPDATE: I can understand that I've been somewhat vague--let me try and clarify: Parsing of the JSON object is not the issue here--JQuery is - I think. jQuery throws a parse-error (invokes the error function). It seems like jQuery's internal JSON validation is not accepting any of the before mentioned objects. Not even the valid ones. Output of the error function is: XMLHttpRequest: XMLHttpRequest readyState=4 status=200 textStatus: parsererror errorThrown: undefined This goes for all of the before mentioned objects.

  • Nhibernate Fluent domain Object with Id(x => x.id).GeneratedBy.Assigned not saveable

    - by urpcor
    Hi there, I am using for some legacy db the corresponding domainclasses with mappings. Now the Ids of the entities are calculated by some stored Procedure in the DB which gives back the Id for the new row.(Its legacy, I cant change this) Now I create the new entity , set the Id and Call Save. But nothing happens. no exeption. Even NH Profiler does not say a bit. its as the Save call does nothing. I expect that NH thinks that the record is already in the db because its got an Id already. But I am using Id(x = x.id).GeneratedBy.Assigned() and intetionally the Session.Save(object) method. I am confused. I saw so many samples there it worked. does any body have any ideas about it? public class Appendix { public virtual int id { get; set; } public virtual AppendixHierarchy AppendixHierachy { get; set; } public virtual byte[] appendix { get; set; } } public class AppendixMap : ClassMap<Appendix> { public AppendixMap () { WithTable("appendix"); Id(x => x.id).GeneratedBy.Assigned(); References(x => x.AppendixHierachy).ColumnName("appendixHierarchyId"); Map(x => x.appendix); } }

  • How to store sorted records in csv file ?

  • Check for existing mapping when writing a custom applier in ConfORM

    - by Philip Fourie
    I am writing my first custom column name applier for ConfORM. How do I check if another column has already been map with same mapping name? This is what I have so far: public class MyColumnNameApplier : IPatternApplier<PropertyPath, IPropertyMapper> { public bool Match(PropertyPath subject) { return (subject.LocalMember != null); } public void Apply(PropertyPath subject, IPropertyMapper applyTo) { string shortColumnName = ToOracleName(subject); // How do I check if the short columnName already exist? applyTo.Column(cm => cm.Name(shortColumnName)); } private string ToOracleName(PropertyPath subject) { ... } } } I need to shorten my class property names to less than 30 characters to fit in with Oracle's 30 character limit. Because I am shortening the column names it is possible that I generate the same name for two different properties. I would like to know when a duplicate mapping occurs. If I don't handle this scenario ConfORM/NHibernate allows two different properties to 'share' the same column name - this is obviously creates a problem for me.

  • SQL SERVER – Recover the Accidentally Renamed Table

    - by pinaldave
    I have no answer to following question. I saw a desperate email marked as urgent delivered in my mailbox. “I accidentally renamed table in my SSMS. I was scrolling very fast and I made mistakes. It was either because I double clicked or clicked on F2 (shortcut key for renaming). However, I have made the mistake and now I have no idea how to fix this. I am in big trouble. Help me get my original tablename.” I have seen many similar scenarios in my life and they give me a very good opportunity to preach wisdom but when the house is burning, we cannot talk about how we should have conserved the water earlier. The goal at that point is to put off the fire as fast as we can. I decided to answer this email with my best knowledge. If you have renamed the table, I think you pretty much is out of luck. Here are few things which you can do which can give you idea about what your tablename can be if you are lucky. Method 1: (Not Recommended but try your luck) Check your naming convention of your system. I have often seen that many organizations name their index as IX_TableName_Colms or name their keys as FK_TableName1_TableName2_Cols. If your organization is following the same you can get the name from your table, you may refer your keys. Again, note that this is quite possible that your tablename was already renamed and your keys were not updated. This can easily lead you to select incorrect name. I think follow this if you are confident or move to the next method. Method 2: (Not Recommended but try your luck) This method is also based on your orgs naming convention. If you use the name of the table in any columnname (some organizations use tablename in their incremental identity column name), you can get that name from there. Method 3: (Not Recommended but try your luck) If you know where your table was used in your stored procedures, you can script your stored procedure and find the name of the table back. Method 4: (Try your luck) All the best organizations first create a data model of the schema and there is good chance that this table is used there, you should take your chances and refer original document. If your organization is good at managing docs or source code, you will get the name of the table back for sure. Method 5: (It WORKS but try on a development server) There is no sure way to get you the name of the table which you accidentally renamed however, there is one way which will work for sure. You need to take your latest full backup and restore it on your development server (remember not on production or where you have renamed this column). Now restore latest differential file of the full backup. Now restore all the log files one by one making sure that you are restoring before the point of time of you renamed the tablename. Now go to explore and this will give you the name of the table which you have renamed. If you are confident that the same table existed with the same name when the last full backup was made, you do not have to go to all the steps. You can just get the name of the table directly from last backup’s restore. Read the article about Backup Timeline. Wisdom: How can I miss to preach wisdom when I get the opportunity to do so? Here are a few points to remember. Use a different account to explore production environment. Do not use the same account which have all the rights and permissions all the time. Use the account which has read only permissions if there are no modification required. Use policy based management to prevent changes which are accidental. If there was policy of valid names, the accidental change of the table was not possible unless it was intentional delibarate changes. Have a proper auditing of the system in place. You can use DDL triggers but be careful with its usage (get it reviewed properly first). (Add your suggestion here) I guess Method 5 will work all the time (using point in time restore). Everything else is chance of luck and if you are lucky are bad – you will get further incorrect name. Now go back and read the first line of this blog. Out of five method four methods are just lucky guesses. The method 5 will work but again it is a lengthy process if the size of the database is huge or if you do not have full backup. • What Counts For A DBA: Foresight

    - by drsql
    Of all the valuable attributes of a DBA covered so far in this series, ranging from passion to humility to practicality, perhaps one of the most important attributes may turn out to be the most seemingly-nebulous: foresight. According to Free Dictionary foresight is the "perception of the significance and nature of events before they have occurred". Foresight does not come naturally to most people, as the parent of any teenager will attest. No matter how clearly you see their problems coming they won't listen, and have to fail before eventually (hopefully) learning for themselves. Having graduated from the school of hard knocks, the DBA, the naive teenager no longer, acquires the ability to foretell how events will unfold in response to certain actions or attitudes with the unerring accuracy of a doom-laden prophet. Like Simba in the Lion King, after a few blows to the head, we foretell that a sore head that will be the inevitable consequence of a swing of Rafiki's stick, and we take evasive action. However, foresight is about more than simply learning when to duck. It's about taking the time to understand and prevent the habits that caused the stick to swing in the first place. And based on this definition, I often think there is a lot less foresight on display in my industry than there ought to be. Most DBAs reading this blog will spot a line such as the following in a piece of "working" code, understand immediately why it is less than optimimum, and take evasive action. …WHERE CAST (columnName as int) = 1 However, the programmers who regularly write this sort of code clearly lack that foresight, and this and numerous other examples of similarly-malodorous code prevail throughout our industry (and provide premium-grade fertilizer for the healthy growth of many a consultant's bank account). Sometimes, perhaps harried by impatient managers and painfully tight deadlines, everyone makes mistakes. Yes, I too occasionally write code that "works", but basically stinks. When the problems manifest, it is sometimes accompanied by a sense of grim recognition that somewhere in me existed the foresight to know that that approach would lead to this problem. However, in the headlong rush, warning signs got overlooked, lessons learned previously, which could supply the foresight to the current project, were lost and not applied.   Of course, the problem often is a simple lack of skills, training and knowledge in the relevant technology and/or business space; programmers and DBAs forced to do their best in the face of inadequate training, or to apply their skills in areas where they lack experience. However, often the problem goes deeper than this; I detect in some DBAs and programmers a certain laziness of attitude.   They veer from one project to the next, going with "whatever works", unwilling or unable to take the time to understand where their actions are leading them. Of course, the whole "Agile" mindset is often interpreted to favor flexibility and rapid production over aiming to get things right the first time. The faster you try to travel in the dark, frequently changing direction, the more important it is to have someone who has the foresight to know at least roughly where you are heading. This is doubly true for the data tier which, no matter how you try to deny it, simply cannot be "redone" every month as you learn aspects of the world you are trying to model that, with a little bit of foresight, you would have seen coming.   Sometimes, when as a DBA you can glance briefly at 200 lines of working SQL code and know instinctively why it will cause problems, foresight can feel like magic, but it isn't; it's more like muscle memory. It is acquired as the consequence of good experience, useful communication with those around you, and a willingness to learn continually, through continued education as well as from failure. Foresight can be deployed only by finding time to understand how the lessons learned from other DBAs, and other projects, can help steer the current project in the right direction.   C.S. Lewis once said "The future is something which everyone reaches at the rate of sixty minutes an hour, whatever he does, whoever he is." It cannot be avoided; the quality of what you build now is going to affect you, and others, at some point in the future. Take the time to acquire foresight; it is a love letter to your future self, to say you cared.

  • Bulk inserting best way to about it? + Helping me understand fully what I found so far

    - by chobo2
    Hi So I saw this post here and read it and it seems like bulk copy might be the way to go. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/682015/whats-the-best-way-to-bulk-database-inserts-from-c I still have some questions and want to know how things actually work. So I found 2 tutorials. http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cs/MultipleInsertsIn1dbTrip.aspx#_Toc196622241 http://www.codeproject.com/KB/linq/BulkOperations_LinqToSQL.aspx First way uses 2 ado.net 2.0 features. BulkInsert and BulkCopy. the second one uses linq to sql and OpenXML. This sort of appeals to me as I am using linq to sql already and prefer it over ado.net. However as one person pointed out in the posts what he just going around the issue at the cost of performance( nothing wrong with that in my opinion) First I will talk about the 2 ways in the first tutorial I am using VS2010 Express, .net 4.0, MVC 2.0, SQl Server 2005 Is ado.net 2.0 the most current version? Based on the technology I am using, is there some updates to what I am going to show that would improve it somehow? Is there any thing that these tutorial left out that I should know about? BulkInsert I am using this table for all the examples. CREATE TABLE [dbo].[TBL_TEST_TEST] ( ID INT IDENTITY(1,1) PRIMARY KEY, [NAME] [varchar](50) ) SP Code USE [Test] GO /****** Object: StoredProcedure [dbo].[sp_BatchInsert] Script Date: 05/19/2010 15:12:47 ******/ SET ANSI_NULLS ON GO SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_BatchInsert] (@Name VARCHAR(50) ) AS BEGIN INSERT INTO TBL_TEST_TEST VALUES (@Name); END C# Code /// <summary> /// Another ado.net 2.0 way that uses a stored procedure to do a bulk insert. /// Seems slower then "BatchBulkCopy" way and it crashes when you try to insert 500,000 records in one go. /// http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cs/MultipleInsertsIn1dbTrip.aspx#_Toc196622241 /// </summary> private static void BatchInsert() { // Get the DataTable with Rows State as RowState.Added DataTable dtInsertRows = GetDataTable(); SqlConnection connection = new SqlConnection(connectionString); SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand("sp_BatchInsert", connection); command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; command.UpdatedRowSource = UpdateRowSource.None; // Set the Parameter with appropriate Source Column Name command.Parameters.Add("@Name", SqlDbType.VarChar, 50, dtInsertRows.Columns[0].ColumnName); SqlDataAdapter adpt = new SqlDataAdapter(); adpt.InsertCommand = command; // Specify the number of records to be Inserted/Updated in one go. Default is 1. adpt.UpdateBatchSize = 1000; connection.Open(); int recordsInserted = adpt.Update(dtInsertRows); connection.Close(); } So first thing is the batch size. Why would you set a batch size to anything but the number of records you are sending? Like I am sending 500,000 records so I did a Batch size of 500,000. Next why does it crash when I do this? If I set it to 1000 for batch size it works just fine. System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException was unhandled Message="A transport-level error has occurred when sending the request to the server. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.)" Next I looked at bulkcopy /// <summary> /// An ado.net 2.0 way to mass insert records. This seems to be the fastest. /// http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cs/MultipleInsertsIn1dbTrip.aspx#_Toc196622241 /// </summary> private static void BatchBulkCopy() { // Get the DataTable DataTable dtInsertRows = GetDataTable(); using (SqlBulkCopy sbc = new SqlBulkCopy(connectionString, SqlBulkCopyOptions.KeepIdentity)) { sbc.DestinationTableName = "TBL_TEST_TEST"; // Number of records to be processed in one go sbc.BatchSize = 500000; // Map the Source Column from DataTabel to the Destination Columns in SQL Server 2005 Person Table // sbc.ColumnMappings.Add("ID", "ID"); sbc.ColumnMappings.Add("NAME", "NAME"); // Number of records after which client has to be notified about its status sbc.NotifyAfter = dtInsertRows.Rows.Count; // Event that gets fired when NotifyAfter number of records are processed. sbc.SqlRowsCopied += new SqlRowsCopiedEventHandler(sbc_SqlRowsCopied); // Finally write to server sbc.WriteToServer(dtInsertRows); sbc.Close(); } } This one seemed to go really fast and did not even need a SP( can you use SP with bulk copy? If you can would it be better?) BatchCopy had no problem with a 500,000 batch size.So again why make it smaller then the number of records you want to send? I found that with BatchCopy and 500,000 batch size it took only 5 seconds to complete. I then tried with a batch size of 1,000 and it only took 8 seconds. So much faster then the bulkinsert one above. Now I tried the other tutorial. USE [Test] GO /****** Object: StoredProcedure [dbo].[spTEST_InsertXMLTEST_TEST] Script Date: 05/19/2010 15:39:03 ******/ SET ANSI_NULLS ON GO SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[spTEST_InsertXMLTEST_TEST](@UpdatedProdData nText) AS DECLARE @hDoc int exec sp_xml_preparedocument @hDoc OUTPUT,@UpdatedProdData INSERT INTO TBL_TEST_TEST(NAME) SELECT XMLProdTable.NAME FROM OPENXML(@hDoc, 'ArrayOfTBL_TEST_TEST/TBL_TEST_TEST', 2) WITH ( ID Int, NAME varchar(100) ) XMLProdTable EXEC sp_xml_removedocument @hDoc C# code. /// <summary> /// This is using linq to sql to make the table objects. /// It is then serailzed to to an xml document and sent to a stored proedure /// that then does a bulk insert(I think with OpenXML) /// http://www.codeproject.com/KB/linq/BulkOperations_LinqToSQL.aspx /// </summary> private static void LinqInsertXMLBatch() { using (TestDataContext db = new TestDataContext()) { TBL_TEST_TEST[] testRecords = new TBL_TEST_TEST[500000]; for (int count = 0; count < 500000; count++) { TBL_TEST_TEST testRecord = new TBL_TEST_TEST(); testRecord.NAME = "Name : " + count; testRecords[count] = testRecord; } StringBuilder sBuilder = new StringBuilder(); System.IO.StringWriter sWriter = new System.IO.StringWriter(sBuilder); XmlSerializer serializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(TBL_TEST_TEST[])); serializer.Serialize(sWriter, testRecords); db.insertTestData(sBuilder.ToString()); } } So I like this because I get to use objects even though it is kinda redundant. I don't get how the SP works. Like I don't get the whole thing. I don't know if OPENXML has some batch insert under the hood but I do not even know how to take this example SP and change it to fit my tables since like I said I don't know what is going on. I also don't know what would happen if the object you have more tables in it. Like say I have a ProductName table what has a relationship to a Product table or something like that. In linq to sql you could get the product name object and make changes to the Product table in that same object. So I am not sure how to take that into account. I am not sure if I would have to do separate inserts or what. The time was pretty good for 500,000 records it took 52 seconds The last way of course was just using linq to do it all and it was pretty bad. /// <summary> /// This is using linq to sql to to insert lots of records. /// This way is slow as it uses no mass insert. /// Only tried to insert 50,000 records as I did not want to sit around till it did 500,000 records. /// http://www.codeproject.com/KB/linq/BulkOperations_LinqToSQL.aspx /// </summary> private static void LinqInsertAll() { using (TestDataContext db = new TestDataContext()) { db.CommandTimeout = 600; for (int count = 0; count < 50000; count++) { TBL_TEST_TEST testRecord = new TBL_TEST_TEST(); testRecord.NAME = "Name : " + count; db.TBL_TEST_TESTs.InsertOnSubmit(testRecord); } db.SubmitChanges(); } } I did only 50,000 records and that took over a minute to do. So I really narrowed it done to the linq to sql bulk insert way or bulk copy. I am just not sure how to do it when you have relationship for either way. I am not sure how they both stand up when doing updates instead of inserts as I have not gotten around to try it yet. I don't think I will ever need to insert/update more than 50,000 records at one type but at the same time I know I will have to do validation on records before inserting so that will slow it down and that sort of makes linq to sql nicer as your got objects especially if your first parsing data from a xml file before you insert into the database. Full C# code using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Xml.Serialization; using System.Data; using System.Data.SqlClient; namespace TestIQueryable { class Program { private static string connectionString = ""; static void Main(string[] args) { BatchInsert(); Console.WriteLine("done"); } /// <summary> /// This is using linq to sql to to insert lots of records. /// This way is slow as it uses no mass insert. /// Only tried to insert 50,000 records as I did not want to sit around till it did 500,000 records. /// http://www.codeproject.com/KB/linq/BulkOperations_LinqToSQL.aspx /// </summary> private static void LinqInsertAll() { using (TestDataContext db = new TestDataContext()) { db.CommandTimeout = 600; for (int count = 0; count < 50000; count++) { TBL_TEST_TEST testRecord = new TBL_TEST_TEST(); testRecord.NAME = "Name : " + count; db.TBL_TEST_TESTs.InsertOnSubmit(testRecord); } db.SubmitChanges(); } } /// <summary> /// This is using linq to sql to make the table objects. /// It is then serailzed to to an xml document and sent to a stored proedure /// that then does a bulk insert(I think with OpenXML) /// http://www.codeproject.com/KB/linq/BulkOperations_LinqToSQL.aspx /// </summary> private static void LinqInsertXMLBatch() { using (TestDataContext db = new TestDataContext()) { TBL_TEST_TEST[] testRecords = new TBL_TEST_TEST[500000]; for (int count = 0; count < 500000; count++) { TBL_TEST_TEST testRecord = new TBL_TEST_TEST(); testRecord.NAME = "Name : " + count; testRecords[count] = testRecord; } StringBuilder sBuilder = new StringBuilder(); System.IO.StringWriter sWriter = new System.IO.StringWriter(sBuilder); XmlSerializer serializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(TBL_TEST_TEST[])); serializer.Serialize(sWriter, testRecords); db.insertTestData(sBuilder.ToString()); } } /// <summary> /// An ado.net 2.0 way to mass insert records. • EPPlus - .xlsx is locked for editing by 'another user'

    - by AdamTheITMan
    I have searched through every possible answer on SO for a solution, but nothing has worked. I am basically creating an excel file from a database and sending the results to the response stream using EPPlus(OpenXML). The following code gives me an error when trying to open my generated excel sheet "[report].xlsx is locked for editing by 'another user'." It will open fine the first time, but the second time it's locked. Dim columnData As New List(Of Integer) Dim rowHeaders As New List(Of String) Dim letter As String = "B" Dim x As Integer = 0 Dim trendBy = context.Session("TRENDBY").ToString() Dim dateHeaders As New List(Of String) dateHeaders = DirectCast(context.Session("DATEHEADERS"), List(Of String)) Dim DS As New DataSet DS = DirectCast(context.Session("DS"), DataSet) Using excelPackage As New OfficeOpenXml.ExcelPackage Dim excelWorksheet = excelPackage.Workbook.Worksheets.Add("Report") 'Add title to the top With excelWorksheet.Cells("B1") .Value = "Account Totals by " + If(trendBy = "Months", "Month", "Week") .Style.Font.Bold = True End With 'add date headers x = 2 'start with letter B (aka 2) For Each Header As String In dateHeaders With excelWorksheet.Cells(letter + "2") .Value = Header .Style.HorizontalAlignment = OfficeOpenXml.Style.ExcelHorizontalAlignment.Right .AutoFitColumns() End With x = x + 1 letter = Helper.GetColumnIndexToColumnLetter(x) Next 'Adds the descriptive row headings down the left side of excel sheet x = 0 For Each DC As DataColumn In DS.Tables(0).Columns If (x < DS.Tables(0).Columns.Count) Then rowHeaders.Add(DC.ColumnName) End If Next Dim range = excelWorksheet.Cells("A3:A30") range.LoadFromCollection(rowHeaders) 'Add the meat and potatoes of report x = 2 For Each dTable As DataTable In DS.Tables columnData.Clear() For Each DR As DataRow In dTable.Rows For Each item As Object In DR.ItemArray columnData.Add(item) Next Next letter = Helper.GetColumnIndexToColumnLetter(x) excelWorksheet.Cells(letter + "3").LoadFromCollection(columnData) With excelWorksheet.Cells(letter + "3") .Formula = "=SUM(" + letter + "4:" + letter + "6)" .Style.Font.Bold = True .Style.Font.Size = 12 End With With excelWorksheet.Cells(letter + "7") .Formula = "=SUM(" + letter + "8:" + letter + "11)" .Style.Font.Bold = True .Style.Font.Size = 12 End With With excelWorksheet.Cells(letter + "12") .Style.Font.Bold = True .Style.Font.Size = 12 End With With excelWorksheet.Cells(letter + "13") .Formula = "=SUM(" + letter + "14:" + letter + "20)" .Style.Font.Bold = True .Style.Font.Size = 12 End With With excelWorksheet.Cells(letter + "21") .Formula = "=SUM(" + letter + "22:" + letter + "23)" .Style.Font.Bold = True .Style.Font.Size = 12 End With With excelWorksheet.Cells(letter + "24") .Formula = "=SUM(" + letter + "25:" + letter + "26)" .Style.Font.Bold = True .Style.Font.Size = 12 End With With excelWorksheet.Cells(letter + "27") .Formula = "=SUM(" + letter + "28:" + letter + "29)" .Style.Font.Bold = True .Style.Font.Size = 12 End With With excelWorksheet.Cells(letter + "30") .Formula = "=SUM(" + letter + "3," + letter + "7," + letter + "12," + letter + "13," + letter + "21," + letter + "24," + letter + "27)" .Style.Font.Bold = True .Style.Font.Size = 12 End With x = x + 1 Next range.AutoFitColumns() 'send it to response Using stream As New MemoryStream(excelPackage.GetAsByteArray()) context.Response.Clear() context.Response.ContentType = "application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.spreadsheetml.sheet" context.Response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "attachment; filename=filetest.xlsx") context.Response.OutputStream.Write(stream.ToArray(), 0, stream.ToArray().Length) context.Response.Flush() context.Response.Close() End Using End Using

  • fill gridview cell-by-cell

    - by raging_boner
    I want to populate GridView below with images: <asp:GridView ID="GrdDynamic" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False"> <Columns> </Columns> </asp:GridView> The code below iterates through directory, then I collect image titles and want them to be populated in gridview. code in bold is not working well, gridview is only filled with the last image in list. List<string> imagelist = new List<string>(); protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { foreach (String image in Directory.GetFiles(Server.MapPath("example/"))) { imagelist.Add("~/example/" + Path.GetFileName(image)); } loadDynamicGrid(imagelist); } private void loadDynamicGrid(List<string> list) { DataTable dt = new DataTable(); DataColumn dcol = new DataColumn(NAME, typeof(System.String)); dt.Columns.Add(dcol); dcol = new DataColumn("NAME1", typeof(System.String)); dt.Columns.Add(dcol); dcol = new DataColumn("NAME2", typeof(System.String)); dt.Columns.Add(dcol); dcol = new DataColumn("NAME3", typeof(System.String)); dt.Columns.Add(dcol); DataRow drow = dt.NewRow(); dt.Rows.Add(); dt.Rows.Add(); **for (int i = 0; i < dt.Rows.Count; i++) { for (int j = 0; j < dt.Columns.Count; j++) { foreach (string value in list) { dt.Rows[i][j] = value; } } }** foreach (DataColumn col in dt.Columns) { ImageField bfield = new ImageField(); bfield.DataImageUrlField = NAME; bfield.HeaderText = col.ColumnName; GrdDynamic.Columns.Add(bfield); } GrdDynamic.DataSource = dt; GrdDynamic.DataBind(); } how to fill gridview cell-by-cell only with available amount of images? i know it is easy, i tried various methods like: dt.Rows.Add(list); and some other attempts, but they didn't work. i'm very stupid. i'd be glad for any help.

Instead of just listing all the articles I have selected a few of my most favorite articles and have listed them here with additional notes below it. Let me know which one of the following is your favorite article from memory lane. 2007 Explanation and Understanding NOT NULL Constraint NOT NULL is integrity CONSTRAINT. It does not allow creating of the row where column contains NULL value. Most discussed questions about NULL is what is NULL? I will not go in depth analysis it. Simply put NULL is unknown or missing data. When NULL is present in database columns, it can affect the integrity of the database. I really do not prefer NULL in the database unless they are absolutely necessary. Three T-SQL Script to Create Primary Keys on Table I have always enjoyed writing about three topics Constraint and Keys, Backup and Restore and Datetime Functions. Primary Keys constraints prevent duplicate values for columns and provides a unique identifier to each column, as well it creates clustered index on the columns. 2008 Get Numeric Value From Alpha Numeric String – UDF for Get Numeric Numbers Only SQL is great with String operations. Many times, I use T-SQL to do my string operation. Let us see User Defined Function, which I wrote a few days ago, which will return only Numeric values from Alpha Numeric values. Introduction and Example of UNION and UNION ALL It is very much interesting when I get requests from blog reader to re-write my previous articles. I have received few requests to rewrite my article SQL SERVER – Union vs. Union All – Which is better for performance? with examples. I request you to read my previous article first to understand what is the concept and read this article to understand the same concept with an example. Downgrade Database for Previous Version The main questions is how they can downgrade the from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2000? The answer is : Not Possible. Get Common Records From Two Tables Without Using Join Following is my scenario, Suppose Table 1 and Table 2 has same column e.g. Column1 Following is the query, 1. Select column1,column2 From Table1 2. Select column1 From Table2 I want to find common records from these tables, but I don’t want to use the Join clause because for that I need to specify the column name for Join condition. Will you help me to get common records without using Join condition? I am using SQL Server 2005. Retrieve – Select Only Date Part From DateTime – Best Practice – Part 2 A year ago I wrote a post about SQL SERVER – Retrieve – Select Only Date Part From DateTime – Best Practice where I have discussed two different methods of getting the date part from datetime. Introduction to CLR – Simple Example of CLR Stored Procedure CLR is an abbreviation of Common Language Runtime. In SQL Server 2005 and later version of it database objects can be created which are created in CLR. Stored Procedures, Functions, Triggers can be coded in CLR. CLR is faster than T-SQL in many cases. CLR is mainly used to accomplish tasks which are not possible by T-SQL or can use lots of resources. The CLR can be usually implemented where there is an intense string operation, thread management or iteration methods which can be complicated for T-SQL. Implementing CLR provides more security to the Extended Stored Procedure. 2009 Comic Slow Query – SQL Joke Before Presentation After Presentation Enable Automatic Statistic Update on Database In one of the recent projects, I found out that despite putting good indexes and optimizing the query, I could not achieve an optimized performance and I still received an unoptimized response from the SQL Server. On examination, I figured out that the culprit was statistics. The database that I was trying to optimize had auto update of the statistics was disabled. Recently Executed T-SQL Query Please refer to blog post  query to recently executed T-SQL query on database. Change Collation of Database Column – T-SQL Script – Consolidating Collations – Extention Script At some time in your DBA career, you may find yourself in a position when you sit back and realize that your database collations have somehow run amuck, or are faced with the ever annoying CANNOT RESOLVE COLLATION message when trying to join data of varying collation settings. 2010 Visiting Alma Mater – Delivering Session on Database Performance and Career – Nirma Institute of Technology Everyone always dreams of visiting their school and college, where they have studied once. It is a great feeling to see the college once again – where you have spent the wonderful golden years of your time. College time is filled with studies, education, emotions and several plans to build a future. I consider myself fortunate as I got the opportunity to study at some of the best places in the world. Change Column DataTypes There are times when I feel like writing that I am a day older in SQL Server. In fact, there are many who are looking for a solution that is simple enough. Have you ever searched online for something very simple. I often do and enjoy doing things which are straight forward and easy to change. 2011 Three DMVs – sys.dm_server_memory_dumps – sys.dm_server_services – sys.dm_server_registry In this blog post we will see three new DMVs which are introduced in Denali. The DMVs are very simple and there is not much to describe them. So here is the simple game. I will be asking a question back to you after seeing the result of the each of the DMV and you help me to complete this blog post. A Simple Quiz – T-SQL Brain Trick If you have some time, I strongly suggest you try this quiz out as it is for sure twists your brain. 2012 List All The Column With Specific Data Types in Database 5 years ago I wrote script SQL SERVER – 2005 – List All The Column With Specific Data Types, when I read it again, it is very much relevant and I liked it. This is one of the script which every developer would like to keep it handy. I have upgraded the script bit more. I have included few additional information which I believe I should have added from the beginning. It is difficult to visualize the final script when we are writing it first time. Find First Non-Numeric Character from String The function PATINDEX exists for quite a long time in SQL Server but I hardly see it being used. Well, at least I use it and I am comfortable using it. Here is a simple script which I use when I have to identify first non-numeric character. Finding Different ColumnName From Almost Identitical Tables Well here is the interesting example of how we can use sys.column catalogue views and get the details of the newly added column. I have previously written about EXCEPT over here which is very similar to MINUS of Oracle. Storing Data and Files in Cloud – Dropbox – Personal Technology Tip I thought long and hard about doing a Personal Technology Tips series for this blog.  I have so many tips I’d like to share.  I am on my computer almost all day, every day, so I have a treasure trove of interesting tidbits I like to share if given the chance.  The only thing holding me back – which tip to share first?  The first tip obviously has the weight of seeming like the most important.  But this would mean choosing amongst my favorite tricks and shortcuts.  This is a hard task. Here is the list of selected articles of SQLAuthority.com across all these years. Instead of just listing all the articles I have selected a few of my most favorite articles and have listed them here with additional notes below it. Let me know which one of the following is your favorite article from memory lane. 2007 Order of Result Set of SELECT Statement on Clustered Indexed Table When ORDER BY is Not Used Above theory is true in most of the cases. However SQL Server does not use that logic when returning the resultset. SQL Server always returns the resultset which it can return fastest.In most of the cases the resultset which can be returned fastest is the resultset which is returned using clustered index. Effect of TRANSACTION on Local Variable – After ROLLBACK and After COMMIT One of the Jr. Developer asked me this question (What will be the Effect of TRANSACTION on Local Variable – After ROLLBACK and After COMMIT?) while I was rushing to an important meeting. I was getting late so I asked him to talk with his Application Tech Lead. When I came back from meeting both of them were looking for me. They said they are confused. I quickly wrote down following example for them. 2008 SQL SERVER – Guidelines and Coding Standards Complete List Download Coding standards and guidelines are very important for any developer on the path of a successful career. A coding standard is a set of guidelines, rules and regulations on how to write code. Coding standards should be flexible enough or should take care of the situation where they should not prevent best practices for coding. They are basically the guidelines that one should follow for better understanding. Download Guidelines and Coding Standards complete List Download Get Answer in Float When Dividing of Two Integer Many times we have requirements of some calculations amongst different fields in Tables. One of the software developers here was trying to calculate some fields having integer values and divide it which gave incorrect results in integer where accurate results including decimals was expected. Puzzle – Computed Columns Datatype Explanation SQL Server automatically does a cast to the data type having the highest precedence. So the result of INT and INT will be INT, but INT and FLOAT will be FLOAT because FLOAT has a higher precedence. If you want a different data type, you need to do an EXPLICIT cast. Renaming SP is Not Good Idea – Renaming Stored Procedure Does Not Update sys.procedures I have written many articles about renaming a tables, columns and procedures SQL SERVER – How to Rename a Column Name or Table Name, here I found something interesting about renaming the stored procedures and felt like sharing it with you all. The interesting fact is that when we rename a stored procedure using SP_Rename command, the Stored Procedure is successfully renamed. But when we try to test the procedure using sp_helptext, the procedure will be having the old name instead of new names. 2009 Insert Values of Stored Procedure in Table – Use Table Valued Function It is clear from the result set that , where I have converted stored procedure logic into the table valued function, is much better in terms of logic as it saves a large number of operations. However, this option should be used carefully. The performance of the stored procedure is “usually” better than that of functions. Interesting Observation – Index on Index View Used in Similar Query Recently, I was working on an optimization project for one of the largest organizations. While working on one of the queries, we came across a very interesting observation. We found that there was a query on the base table and when the query was run, it used the index, which did not exist in the base table. On careful examination, we found that the query was using the index that was on another view. This was very interesting as I have personally never experienced a scenario like this. In simple words, “Query on the base table can use the index created on the indexed view of the same base table.” Interesting Observation – Execution Plan and Results of Aggregate Concatenation Queries Working with SQL Server has never seemed to be monotonous – no matter how long one has worked with it. Quite often, I come across some excellent comments that I feel like acknowledging them as blog posts. Recently, I wrote an article on SQL SERVER – Execution Plan and Results of Aggregate Concatenation Queries Depend Upon Expression Location, which is well received in the community. 2010 I encourage all of you to go through complete series and write your own on the subject. If you write an article and send it to me, I will publish it on this blog with due credit to you. If you write on your own blog, I will update this blog post pointing to your blog post. SQL SERVER – ORDER BY Does Not Work – Limitation of the View 1 SQL SERVER – Adding Column is Expensive by Joining Table Outside View – Limitation of the View 2 SQL SERVER – Index Created on View not Used Often – Limitation of the View 3 SQL SERVER – SELECT * and Adding Column Issue in View – Limitation of the View 4 SQL SERVER – COUNT(*) Not Allowed but COUNT_BIG(*) Allowed – Limitation of the View 5 SQL SERVER – UNION Not Allowed but OR Allowed in Index View – Limitation of the View 6 SQL SERVER – Cross Database Queries Not Allowed in Indexed View – Limitation of the View 7 SQL SERVER – Outer Join Not Allowed in Indexed Views – Limitation of the View 8 SQL SERVER – SELF JOIN Not Allowed in Indexed View – Limitation of the View 9 SQL SERVER – Keywords View Definition Must Not Contain for Indexed View – Limitation of the View 10 SQL SERVER – View Over the View Not Possible with Index View – Limitations of the View 11 2011 Startup Parameters Easy to Configure If you are a regular reader of this blog, you must be aware that I have written about SQL Server Denali recently. Here is the quickest way to reach into the screen where we can change the startup parameters. Go to SQL Server Configuration Manager >> SQL Server Services >> Right Click on the Server >> Properties >> Startup Parameters 2012 Validating Unique Columnname Across Whole Database I sometimes come across very strange requirements and often I do not receive a proper explanation of the same. Here is the one of those examples. For example “Our business requirement is when we add new column we want it unique across current database.” Read the solution to this strange request in this blog post. Excel Losing Decimal Values When Value Pasted from SSMS ResultSet It is very common when users are coping the resultset to Excel, the floating point or decimals are missed. The solution is very much simple and it requires a small adjustment in the Excel. By default Excel is very smart and when it detects the value which is getting pasted is numeric it changes the column format to accommodate that. Basic Calculation and PEMDAS Order of Operation Read this interesting blog post for fantastic conversation about the subject. Copy Column Headers from Resultset – SQL in Sixty Seconds #027 – Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_-3tLqTRv0 Delete From Multiple Table – Update Multiple Table in Single Statement There are two questions which I get every single day multiple times. In my gmail, I have created standard canned reply for them. Let us see the questions here. I want to delete from multiple table in a single statement how will I do it? I want to update multiple table in a single statement how will I do it? Read the answer in the blog post.
