In the model, I have:
public ObservableCollection<Item> Items { get; private set; }
In the ViewModel, I have a corresponding list of ItemViewModels:
public ObservableCollection<ItemViewModel> ItemViewModels ...
In the XAML, I will bind (in this case a TreeView) to the ItemViewModels property.
