  • Optimizing hash lookup & memory performance in Go

    As an exercise, I'm implementing HashLife in Go. In brief, HashLife works by memoizing nodes in a quadtree so that once a given node's value in the future has been calculated, it can just be looked up instead of being re-calculated. So eg. if you have a node at the 8x8 level, you remember it by its four children (each at the 2x2 level). So next time you see an 8x8 node, when you calculate the next generation, you first check if you've already seen a node with those same four children. This is extended up through all levels of the quadtree, which gives you some pretty amazing optimizations if eg. you're 10 levels above the leaves. Unsurprisingly, it looks like the perfmance crux of this is the lookup of nodes by child-node values. Currently I have a hashmap of {&upper_left_node,&upper_right_node,&lower_left_node,&lower_right_node} -> node So my lookup function is this: func FindNode(ul, ur, ll, lr *Node) *Node { var node *Node var ok bool nc := NodeChildren{ul, ur, ll, lr} node, ok = NodeMap[nc] if ok { return node } node = &Node{ul, ur, ll, lr, 0, ul.Level + 1, nil} NodeMap[nc] = node return node } What I'm trying to figure out is if the "nc := NodeChildren..." line causes a memory allocation each time the function is called. If it does, can I/should I move the declaration to the global scope and just modify the values each time this function is called? Or is there a more efficient way to do this? Any advice/feedback would be welcome. (even coding style nits; this is literally the first thing I've written in Go so I'd love any feedback)

  • Use Dynamic DNS to access Java servlet, still need port forward ?

    If I use Dynamic DNS such as the free service at https://www.dyndns.com, do I still need to set up static IP and do port forward ? I have a DSL, most likely with dynamic IP address, and I run a Java servlet to get Paypal IPN messages on my notebook, in order for the messages to reach my notebook, I : [1] set up static IP and [2] did port forwarding. But I found each time the PC re-starts, it has a different external IP, so I was suggested to [3] get Dynamic DNS service like the free one mentioned above, but now I'm a bit confused, if I have step [3], do I still need to do [1] and [2], isn't step [3] supposed to do [1] and [2] for me ? But since I've already done [1],[2], now I wonder if they would cause trouble for step [3], do I need to undo them ? Or do I need all of them together ?

    I am trying to start mongod but I get $ mongod mongod --help for help and startup options mongod: symbol lookup error: mongod: undefined symbol: _ZN7pcrecpp2RE4InitEPKcPKNS_10RE_OptionsE Searching on google it seems to be related with libpcre; I tried to install last versions of libpcre3 and libpcre++ but it doesn't work. MongoDB shell's version (and mongodb-server's version) is 2.0.4. Ubuntu's version is 12.04. libpcre3's version is 8.12-4. libpcre++0's version is 0.9.5-5.1. Thanks

    I seem to have an issue with our AD/DNS, the structure looks like: but the BPA gives me an error: Issue: The Active Directory integrated DNS zone _msdcs.<domain> was not found. Impact: DNS queries for the Active Directory integrated zone _msdcs.<domain> might fail. Resolution: Restore the Active Directory integrated DNS zone _msdcs.<domain> Now we've got 4 DC's in total: 2 running Server 2008 R2, 2 running Server 2003. The older ones will be retired sometime this year. Actually everything seems to be working ok (if something isn't then we don't know about it), we've got quite a few .NET applications authenticating against AD, no DNS issues from what I can tell and various bits on the network point to all 4 controllers. Furthermore a dcdiag /dnsall comes up with all passes. Is this something I should be worried about?

  • Cisco SR520w FE - WAN Port Stops Working

    I have setup a Cisco SR520W and everything appears to be working. After about 1-2 days, it looks like the WAN port stops forwarding traffic to the Internet gateway IP of the device. If I unplug and then plug in the network cable connecting the WAN port of the SR520W to my Comcast Cable Modem, traffic startings flowing again. Also, if I restart the SR520W, the traffic will flow again. Any ideas? That’s where you hold your arms up and a partner punches you in your midsection – your breadbasket. I put my arms up, and braced for impact. The trainer came over, saw I was a bit nervous, and coached me through. I can see the fear in your eyes. Don’t be afraid to take the punch. Tighten your core, breathe through the hit. Don’t panic. Over the summer we’d do counter drills as well. This is where a partner throws a punch, you defend but also throw one back – a counter punch. You never just sit back and take a beating, you deflect the blow and come back with one more powerful. These lessons on fighting can apply to all aspects of our lives and any attempts at success that we have. I saw this image recently and agree with it 100%: Success is never a straight forward line. It’s messy, its wrought with failures, its learning over time and applying those life lessons. It’s learning how to take punches and lose your fear, its seeing a punch coming and countering it, but most of all its not giving up and continually moving forward. We do stairs at boxing, which is running up and down three flights of stairs. I’m not anywhere near incredible shape and after doing multiple stairs in a single workout you can feel gassed, tired, even discouraged after hitting the second floor and seeing everyone else running by you. I read a quote from Martin Luther King Jr. that I cling to throughout my day: You want to be successful? Take the punches, but learn how to take them. Counter them. and no matter what, always move forward.

But I find that often its hard to get to that place, I find myself procrastinating, getting distracted by other things (SO for example). Is this experience common? Since they're both in the same container, I tried simply Blockquote Context ctx = new InitialContext(); ctx.lookup("jms/MyQueue"); Blockquote The "jms/MyQueue" is configured in Cluster2. As you can see, this doesn't work!! 1) Do I have to provide an environment entry while creating the InitialContext? Even though both clusters are part of the same container? 2) If not, how then can I lookup the said queue in Cluster 2?

    On May 4 I'll be suiting up with Oracle social media maven Marius Ciortea-- Iceman and Maverick-style--for a flight in the Team Oracle stunt plane. World-renowned pilot Sean Tucker and his team were nice enough to invite us along to participate in aerial photo shoots over Oracle headquarters and the San Francisco bay. I don't think we'll be able to recreate the epic tension generated between Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer in "Top Gun" but we'll do our best to get some good photos, videos, and interviews along the way. LDAP User Entry with diaplyName attribute: This behavior can be controlled by the configuration file xlate-inetorgperson.xml. Change the default value of XPATH abperson\entry\displayname from 'cn' to 'displayName'. <convergence_deploy_location>/config/templates/ab/corp-dir/xlate-inetorgperson.xml Note: In case the user has no 'displayName' attribute in LDAP you might noticed '...' at the user entry, if found via 'mail' attribute.

Departments can have any level of departments and users directly connected to departments. User are connected to departments and other users at the same time. What would be the best approach to implement such a system? There will be approximately 2000 users and 30 departments. Is there a good way to hold all of this information on memory?

  • Lookup Field as a Site Column via CAML

    I'm trying to create a Lookup Field as a Site Column via CAML. The list I want to use as the source of the lookup is created in the Feature Receiver so I don't know it's ID. I've read several blog posts that indicate that I can just put the path to the list in the List attribute. It seems from the comments on these post that this solution works for some people but not for others. I'm in the latter group.
