  • How to print 4 index cards on a single A4 sheet in Word 2003

    - by Anna
I have an index card designed in Word. It's fairly complicated with graphics, borders and background. The page layout has been set to landscape and with size set to 4x6. How can I print this, 4x per A4 landscape sheet? I cannot for the life of me work it out. The printer always seems to do a single card per A4 sheet, wasting 3/4 of the page. "Pages 1,1,1,1" will result in 4 sheets being printed. What am I doing wrong?

  • update-apt-xapian-index hogs CPU, even when Update Manager is set to not check for updates

    - by Dave M G
I have a slightly older laptop running Ubuntu 11.10. It runs fine, but frequently, when I start it up, the CPU monitor in my Gnome Panel shows 100% usage for for what can be up to five minutes or so. It seems that the offending process is update-apt-xapian-index, which, if I understand correctly, is the update manager checking for updates. I have gone into the update manager settings, and selected to never check for updates. I'll do that manually when I feel like I have the time to leave the laptop running for that. However, despite my selection, this still happens. Roughly 50% of the time or more, when I start my laptop, it runs update-apt-xapian-index. How can I get the update manager to respect my settings, or at least to get this process to stop eating my CPU cycles?

  • in MSSQL Server 2005 Dev Edition, I faced index corruption

  • Newbie database index question

    - by RenderIn
I have a table with multiple indexes, several of which duplicate the same columns: Index 1 columns: X, B, C, D Index 2 columns: Y, B, C, D Index 3 columns: Z, B, C, D I'm not very knowledgeable on indexing in practice, so I'm wondering if somebody can explain why X, Y and Z were paired with these same columns. B is an effective date. C is a semi-unique key ID for this table for a specific effective date B. D is a sequence that identifies the priority of this record for the identifier C. Why not just create 6 indexes, one for each X, Y, Z, B, C, D? I want to add an index to another column T, but in some contexts I'll only be querying on T alone while in others I will also be specifying the B, C and D columns... so should I create just one index like above or should I create one for T and one for (T, B, C, D)? I've not had as much luck as expected when googling for comprehensive coverage of indexing. Any resources where I can get a through explanation and lots of examples of B-tree indexing?

  • Clustered index dilemma - ID or sort?

    - by richardtallent
I have a table with two very important fields: id INT identity(1,1) PRIMARY KEY identifiersortcode VARCHAR(900) My app always sorts and pages search results in the UI based on identifiersortcode, but all table joins (and they are legion) are on the id field. (Aside: yes, the sort code really is that long. There's a strong BL reason.) Also, due to O/RM use, most SELECT statements are going to pull almost every column. Currently, the clustered index is on id, but I'm wondering if the TOP / ORDER BY portion of most queries would make identifiersortcode a more attractive option as the clustered key, even considering all of the table joins going on. Inserts on the table and changes to the identifiersortcode are limited enough that changing my clustered index would be a problem for insert/update operations. Trying to make the sort code's non-clustered index a covering index (using INCLUDE) is not a good option. There are a number of large columns, and some of them have a lot of update activity.

  • Index on column with only 2 distinct values

    - by Will
I am wondering about the performance of this index: I have an "Invalid" varchar(1) column that has 2 values: NULL or 'Y' I have an index on (invalid), as well as (invalid, last_validated) Last_validated is a datetime (this is used for a unrelated SELECT query) I am flagging a small amount of items (1-5%) of rows in the table with this as 'to be deleted'. This is so when i DELETE FROM items WHERE invalid='Y' it does not perform a full table scan for the invalid items. A problem seems to be, the actual DELETE is quite slow now, possibly because all the indexes are being removed as they are deleted. Would a bitmap index provide better performance for this? or perhaps no index at all?

  • List of all index & index columns in SQL Server DB

    - by Anton Gogolev
How do I get a list of all index & index columns in SQL Server 2005+? The closest I could get is: select s.name, t.name, i.name, c.name from sys.tables t inner join sys.schemas s on t.schema_id = s.schema_id inner join sys.indexes i on i.object_id = t.object_id inner join sys.index_columns ic on ic.object_id = t.object_id inner join sys.columns c on c.object_id = t.object_id and ic.column_id = c.column_id where i.index_id > 0 and i.type in (1, 2) -- clustered & nonclustered only and i.is_primary_key = 0 -- do not include PK indexes and i.is_unique_constraint = 0 -- do not include UQ and i.is_disabled = 0 and i.is_hypothetical = 0 and ic.key_ordinal > 0 order by ic.key_ordinal which is not exactly what I want. What I want is to list all user-defined indexes (which means no indexes which support unique constraints & primary keys) with all columns (ordered by how do they apper in index definition) plus as much metadata as possible.

  • A question about indexes regarding to the gain of inserts & updates in database

    - by Mestika
Hi, I’m having a question about the fine line between the gain of an index to a table there is growing steadily in size every month and the gain of queries with an index. The situation is, that I’ve two tables, Table1 and Table2. Each table grows slowly but regularly each month (with about 100 new rows for Table1 and a couple of rows for Table2). My concrete question is whether to have an index or to drop it. I’ve made some measurement that an covering index on Table2 improve my SELECT queries and some rather much but again, I’ve to consider the pros and cons but having a really hard time to decide. For Table1 it might not be necessary to have an index because the SELECT queries there is not that common. I would appreciate any suggestion, tips or just good advice to what is a good solution. By the way, I’m using IBM DB2 version 9.7 as my Database system Sincerely Mestika

  • Get index values for an array to print in value attribute for radio buttons

    - by kexxcream
Problem: To get the index values of an array to print accordingly in value attribute of radio buttons. The array $_SESSION['items']: Array ( [2] => Array ( [category] => 2 [question] => Array ( [6] => Källorna refereras separat [7] => Vissa försök till sammanbindning [8] => En del sammanfattningar [9] => Olika forskningslinjer jämförs och sammanfattas [10] => Kontraster, jämförelser, sammanfattningar; centrala likheter och skillnader framhävs ) [title] => Integration av källorna ) ) I have a PHP function that looks like this: function itemsLayout ($array) { for ($i = 1; $i <= count($array['question']); $i++) { $form .= '<input type="radio" name="'.$array['category'].'" id="'.$array['category'].'" value="INDEX VALUE FOR QUESTION ARRAY HERE">'; } return $form; } PHP code: I get the index by using the following: $key = key($_SESSION['items']); $current = $_SESSION['items'][$key]; And I print the first index by using: echo itemsLayout($current); Question: How do I get the index values 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 to print in the value attribute for each radio button?

  • CSS Experts required - problems with Z-Index stack in my page design

    - by Jack W-H
Howdy y'all! Basically I'm having some problems with Z-Index. Although I'm not amazing at CSS I would reckon I was reasonably good, but really can't work this out. You'll see at the URL... http://howcode.com/code/ ... that my problem is that links in the returned 'Popular' results aren't clickable or anything. I've concluded this is due to their Z-Index being messed up. I had to fiddle and tweak with Z-Index to get the tabs - Popular, Top Rated, Featured etc. - to show above the codebg div. When I adjusted the Z-Index so that the results were definitely on top, they acted as normal - text could be selected, the ratings images hovered, etc. etc. However the downside to this was that my Popular, Top Rated, Featured tabs were all placed BENEATH the background image for the returned results. If anyone can post a workaround or alteration to my CSS that would be much appreciated. Please don't forget this is a test site and design and any other URLs are likely not to work, I haven't uploaded any database configs yet or whatever! Attached are a couple of screenshots to clarify what I mean: This is what I WANT to happen (not that in actual fact in this screenshots link aren't clickable, just to demo my point though): This is what DOES happen when I adjust the Z-Index properties (I don't want this!): Thanks y'all!

  • foreign key and index issue

    - by George2
Hello everyone, I am using SQL Server 2008 Enterprise. I have a table and one of its column is referring to another column in another table (in the same database) as foreign key, here is the related SQL statement, in more details, column [AnotherID] in table [Foo] refers to another table [Goo]'s column [GID] as foreign key. [GID] is primary key and clustered index on table [Goo]. My question is, in this way, if I do not create index on [AnotherID] column on [Foo] explicitly, will there be an index created automatically for [AnotherID] column on [Foo] -- because its foreign key reference column [GID] on table [Goo] already has primary clustered key index? CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Foo]( [ID] [bigint] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [AnotherID] [int] NULL, [InsertTime] [datetime] NULL CONSTRAINT DEFAULT (getdate()), CONSTRAINT [PK_Foo] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ( [ID] ASC )WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY] ) ON [PRIMARY] ALTER TABLE [dbo].[Foo] WITH CHECK ADD CONSTRAINT [FK_Foo] FOREIGN KEY([Goo]) REFERENCES [dbo].[Goo] ([GID]) ALTER TABLE [dbo].[Foo] CHECK CONSTRAINT [FK_Foo] thanks in advance, George

The HTML layout is like so: <form id="optionform" onsubmit="return false;"> <label><input type="checkbox" id="s_name" value="s_name"> Survey Name </label> <label><input type="checkbox" id="s_type" value="s_type"> Survey Type </label><br> Filter Results:<br> <div id="template" style="display: none;"> Column: <select id="fcolumn[]"> <option></option> <option value="s_name">Survey Name</option> <option value="s_type">Survey Type</option> </select><br> Filter Type: <select id="ftype[]"> <option></option> <option value="=">Equals</option> <option value="LIKE">Like</option> </select><br> Filter content: <input type="text" id="fcontent[]"><br> <img src="images/add.png" width="32px" onclick="addTemp(); return false;"> <img src="images/delete.png" width="32px" onclick="alert(j(this).attr('src')); remTemp(j('#optionform').index( j(this).parent() )); return false;"> </div> <div class="template" style="display: block;"> Column: <select id="fcolumn[]"> <option></option> <option value="s_name">Survey Name</option> <option value="s_type">Survey Type</option> </select><br> Filter Type: <select id="ftype[]"> <option></option> <option value="=">Equals</option> <option value="LIKE">Like</option> </select><br> Filter content: <input type="text" id="fcontent[]"><br> <img src="images/add.png" width="32px" onclick="addTemp(); return false;"> <img src="images/delete.png" width="32px" onclick="alert(j(this).attr('src')); remTemp(j('#optionform').index( j(this).parent() )); return false;"> </div> <div class="template" style="display: block;"> Column: <select id="fcolumn[]"> <option></option> <option value="s_name">Survey Name</option> <option value="s_type">Survey Type</option> </select><br> Filter Type: <select id="ftype[]"> <option></option> <option value="=">Equals</option> <option value="LIKE">Like</option> </select><br> Filter content: <input type="text" id="fcontent[]"><br> <img src="images/add.png" width="32px" onclick="addTemp(); return false;"> <img src="images/delete.png" width="32px" onclick="alert(j(this).attr('src')); remTemp(j('#optionform').index( j(this).parent() )); return false;"> </div> </form> But it always returns -1 in the index.

  • significance of index name in creating an index (mySQL)

    - by Will
I've done something like this in order to use on duplicate key update: CREATE UNIQUE INDEX blah on mytable(my_col_to_make_an_index); and its worked just fine. I'm just not sure what the purpose of the index name is -- in this case 'blah'. The stuff I've read says to use one but I can't fathom why. It doesn't seem to be used in queries, although I can see it if I export the schema. So ... what purpose does the index name serve? If it helps the line in the CREATE TABLE ends up looking like: UNIQUE KEY `clothID` (`clothID`)

  • SQL SERVER – Index Created on View not Used Often – Observation of the View

    - by pinaldave
I always enjoy writing about concepts on Views. Views are frequently used concepts, and so it’s not surprising that I have seen so many misconceptions about this subject. To clear such misconceptions, I have previously written the article SQL SERVER – The Limitations of the Views – Eleven and more…. I also wrote a follow up article wherein I demonstrated that without even creating index on the basic table, the query on the View will not use the View. You can read about this demonstration over here: SQL SERVER – Index Created on View not Used Often – Limitation of the View 12. I promised in that post that I would also write an article where I would demonstrate the condition where the Index will be used. I got many responses suggesting that I can do that with using NOEXPAND; I agree. I have already written about this in my original summary article. Here is a way for you to see how Index created on View can be utilized. We will do the following steps on this exercise: Create a Table Create a View Create Index On View Write SELECT with ORDER BY on View USE tempdb GO IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM sys.views WHERE OBJECT_ID = OBJECT_ID(N'[dbo].[SampleView]')) DROP VIEW [dbo].[SampleView] GO IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM sys.objects WHERE OBJECT_ID = OBJECT_ID(N'[dbo].[mySampleTable]') AND TYPE IN (N'U')) DROP TABLE [dbo].[mySampleTable] GO -- Create SampleTable CREATE TABLE mySampleTable (ID1 INT, ID2 INT, SomeData VARCHAR(100)) INSERT INTO mySampleTable (ID1,ID2,SomeData) SELECT TOP 100000 ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY o1.name), ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY o2.name), o2.name FROM sys.all_objects o1 CROSS JOIN sys.all_objects o2 GO -- Create View CREATE VIEW SampleView WITH SCHEMABINDING AS SELECT ID1,ID2,SomeData FROM dbo.mySampleTable GO -- Create Index on View CREATE UNIQUE CLUSTERED INDEX [IX_ViewSample] ON [dbo].[SampleView] ( ID2 ASC ) GO -- Select from view SELECT ID1,ID2,SomeData FROM SampleView ORDER BY ID2 GO When we check the execution plan for this , we find it clearly that the Index created on the View is utilized. ORDER BY clause uses the Index created on the View. I hope this makes the puzzle simpler on how the Index is used on the View. Again, I strongly recommend reading my earlier series about the limitations of the Views found here: SQL SERVER – The Limitations of the Views – Eleven and more…. • Read Lines between a start index and end index in java

    - by HonorGod
Lets say I have 10 lines in a file. I have 2 parameters that specify the beginning and ending of a index. StartIndex = 2 // specifies the first 2 lines EndIndex = 3 // specifies the last 3 lines I need to read the lines in between. I know maintaining index and skipping is one of the ways...but are there any other efficient ways (even with external libraries)? Thanks

  • Convert a post-order binary tree traversal index to an level-order (breadth-first) index

    - by strfry
Assuming a complete binary tree, each node can be adressed with the position it appears in a given tree traversal algorithm. For example, the node indices of a simple complete tree with height 3 would look like this: breadth first (aka level-order): 0 / \ 1 2 / \ / \ 3 4 5 6 post-order dept first: 6 / \ 2 5 / \ / \ 0 1 3 4 The height of the tree and an index in the post-order traversal is given. How can i calculate the breadth first index from this information?

  • Fulltext and composite indexes and how they affect the query

    - by Brett
Just say I had a query as below.. SELECT name, category, address, city, state FROM table WHERE MATCH(name,subcategory,category,tag1) AGAINST('education') AND city='Oakland' AND state='CA' LIMIT 0, 10; ..and I had a fulltext index as name,subcategory,category,tag1 and a composite index as city, state; is this good enough for this query? Just wondering if something extra is needed when mixing additional AND's when making use of the fulltext index with the MATCH/AGAINST. Edit: What I am trying to understand is, what happens with the additional columns that are within the query but are not indexed in the chosen index (the fulltext index), the above example being city and state. How does MySQL now find the matching rows for these since it can't use two indexes (or can it?) - so, basically, I'm trying to understand how MySQL goes about finding the data optimally for the columns NOT in the chosen fulltext index and if there is anything I can or should do to optimize the query.

  • Large mailbox in Outlook 2007 takes ages to index

    - by Reado
In our company each user has a single mailbox and all email they have ever sent/received is in that mailbox. We don't do archiving to PST and we thought that was the way forward. The problem we now have is if someone switches to another PC for the day and opens Outlook, it has to download all emails first to that PC (cached mode) but even then when they try to search for something, Outlook says items are still being indexed. One user has over 100,000 items to be indexed and it's been saying that for about a week! As a temporary workaround I have turned off instant searching which allows them to search for anything, but it takes time to filter through, and Outlook doesn't exactly indicate if it's still searching for something, so in most cases the user thinks the search isn't working when really it is and it's just taking time to populate the results. I need a solution that allows the mailbox to be indexed really quickly if the user has to login to another PC. Are we best using Online Mode instead of Cached Mode or is there another way around this? Thanks in advance.

  • Changing an MSSQL clustered index field from containing "random" GUIDs to sequential GUIDs - how wil

    - by Eyvind
We have an MSSQL database in which all the primary keys are GUIDs (uniqueidentifiers). The GUIDs are produced on the client (in C#), and we are considering changing the client to generate sequential (comb) GUIDs instead of just using Guid.NewGuid(), to improve db performance. If we do this, how will this affect installations that already have data with "random" GUIDs as clustered PKs? Can anything be done (short of changing all the PK values) to rebuild the indexes to avoid further fragmentation and bad insert performance? Please give explicit and detailed answers if you can; I am a C# developer at heart and not all too familiar with all the intricacies of SQL Server. Thanks!

  • Windows Experience Index could not be computed

    - by Alexey Ivanov
I've upgraded recently from Windows Vista to Windows 8. When I try to rate my computer, it accesses DirectX 9 performance, then processes to DirectX 10 tests: And it gets stuck at this point. In 5–10 minutes, it shows error message: The video card is rather old: Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family. I'm pretty sure it does not support DirectX 10. Why does Windows assess it with DirectX 10? And how can I make it skip DirectX 10 tests and get the system rating? The driver was installed automatically by Windows 8 from Windows Update. • PostgreSQL: performance descrease due to index bloatper

    - by Henry-Nicolas Tourneur
I'm running a PgSQL 8.1 on a CentOS 4.4 system (not upgradable unfortunately). There's a Java app running on top of the PgSQL daemon and we got to reindex the database every 2 months or so. Also important: the database isn't growing. It looks like the bloat is now coming faster than before and this tends to increase. My config is available here, autovacuum daemon is enabled and running quite often: pastebin.com/RytNj7dK You can also find the output of this query wiki.postgresql.org/wiki/Show_database_bloat 3 hours after running reindex: http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=75fybKyd 72 hours after running reindex: http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=89VKd7PC Does anyone have any idea what should I tweak to get rid of that growing bloat? Thanks for your help PS: due to antispam prevention system, I had to remove the first 2 http:// prefixes for my two first links.
