  • Enforcement of the GNU GPL in Germany and Europe

<b>Groklaw:</b> "GPL enforcement is successful in Europe. In several court decisions and out of court settlements the license conditions of the GPL have been successfully enforced. In particular, embedded systems are the main focus of such compliance activities. The article describes the practice of enforcement activities and the legal prerequisites under the application of German law."

  • Beyond Makefiles: GNU make is For More Than Just Compiling

<b>LinuxPlanet: </b>"You've probably encountered 'make' as a compile tool, used for turning source code into executables (make; make install). However, make can do a lot more than just that. You can use it to automate pretty much any process which involves running a set of commands on source files."

  • Mount "locked" SD card as read-write in GNU/Linux

    - by Vi
My Canon PowerShot A470 + CHDK can write to SD-cards that are "locked" (the lock switch is used to make the card bootable), but GNU/Linux `/dev/mmcblk1': Read-only file system (I'm using "Texas Instrument 5-in-1 Multimedia Card Reader") So I have to switch that switch on and off again and again. ("unlocked" to write to the card in Linux, "locked" to boot the camera from it). How to force locked card to be writable in GNU/Linux?

  • GNU Emacs is crashing with -nw

    - by Jack
When I run emacs with -nw option, the emacs really open, but I can't do more nothing. As if the user input is blocked and no keyboard signal is received and/or interpreted. I've tried run without load .emacs file and some other behaviors: emacs -nw -Q --no-desktop --debug-ini foo.c But makes no difference and strangely the GUI-version(using Gtk) is working fine. My gnu-emacs version is GNU Emacs 23.3.1 Any help to help to fix it is very appreciated.

  • Removing all traces of GNU java and openjdk and replacing with Sun JDK

    - by user61766
I have installed latest Sun JDk. But when I do: java -version I still got OpenJDK version. So I completely removed OpenJDK. But now when I do: java -version I get even older GNU java 1.5 something libgcj. So I completely removed that too but it was asking to remove bunch of dependent apps like OpenOffice.org Writer etc. Even though I need the writer, I let it go because I do not want ever to see the face of any GNU java on my linux. So everything related to GNU java is removed. Luckily I am able to start Eclipse and it works fine and start normally (apparently using the installed Sun JDK which is what I want). But now when I run java -version I get bash: /usr/bin/java: No such file or directory Now what I need to do so that when I open any terminal window and enter java -version I should get Sun JDK version? Sun JDK is installed in /usr/java/jdk1.6.021. I also have symlinks: /usr/java/latest and /usr/java/defaults pointing to sun jdk.

  • How can I keep gnu screen from becoming unresponsive after losing my SSH connection?

    - by Mikey
I use a VPN tunnel to connect to my work network and then SSH to connect to my work PC running cygwin. Once logged in I can attach to a screen session and everything works great. Now, after a while, I walk away from my computer and sooner or later, the VPN tunnel times out. The SSH connection on each end eventually times out and then I eventually come back to my computer to do some work. Theoretically, this should be a simple matter of just restarting the VPN, reconnecting via SSH, and then running "screen -r -d". However apparently when the sshd daemon times out on the cygwin PC, it leaves the screen session in some kind of hung state. I can reproduce a similar hung state by clicking the close box on a cygwin bash shell window while it's running a screen session. Is there any way to get the screen session to recover once this has happened, so that I don't lose anything?

  • How to build gnu `libiconv` on & for windows?

    - by claws
Hello, I want to build a static library (*.LIB file) GNU libiconv on windows to be used with other libraries in Visual C++. Other libraries I'm using are built with "MultiThreaded DLL" (/MD) Runtime option. So, I need to build libiconv with the same option. Problem is the libiconv uses GNU build system and I want to compile with /MD option. You can see the source structure of libiconv here: http://cvs.savannah.gnu.org/viewvc/libiconv/?root=libiconv Actually, Mr. Zlatkovic maintains the windows port of GNU libiconv for libxml2 you can see them here: ftp://xmlsoft.org/libxml2/win32/iconv-1.9.2.win32.zip ftp://xmlsoft.org/libxml2/win32/iconv-1.9.2.win32.zip I cannot use his port. I need to build from the latest version of libiconv-1.13. I wonder how this guy has ported it? Can some one please tell me how to build *.lib from this and compile it using MSVC?

  • gnu make installed with OS language

    - by Gauthier
I installed the latest GNU make to my windows machine. The installer decided to setup the language as the OS language, which I did not get prompted for. I want it to be english. My OS is in swedish. I remember I had similar problem with another GNU program (can't recall which), which was solved by adding the env var "lang" with value "c". How can I switch the language of GNU make to english?

  • GNU/Linux developement n00b needs help porting C++ application from windows to GNU/Linux.

    - by AndrejaKo
Hi! These questions may not be perfectly suited for this site, so I apologize in advance for asking them here. I'm trying to port a computer game from windows to GNU/Linux. It uses Ogre3D,CEGUI, ogreogg and ogrenewt. As far as I know all dependencies work on GNU/Linux and in the game itself there is no ooze-specific code. Here's the questions part: Is there any easy way to port visual studio 2008 project to GNU/Linux tool-chain? How do I manage dependencies? In Visual Studio, I'd just add them in property sheets or default directories. I assume on GNU/Linux autoconf and make take care of that, but in which way? Do I have to add each .cpp and .hpp manually or is there some way to automate things? How do I solve the problem of dependencies on different locations on different systems? I'd like to use Eclipse as IDE under GNU/Linux. I know that the best answer to most of my questions is RTFM, but I'm not sure what I exactly need and where to start looking.

  • Installing Color-Theme with GNU Emacs 23.2 on OS X Snow Leopard

    - by idclark
Hi all, I've just started using emacs a week ago and I've been unsuccessful in installing color-theme using GNU Emacs 23.2 on OS X. With Ubuntu the whole process took maybe a few minutes with the package manager, but I'm completely at a loss with OS X, what the heck is a "tarball"? I don't have any experience compiling source code. I know Carbon Emacs comes with color-theme packaged, what would i lose by reverting to Emacs 22? I'd prefer staying with GNU Emacs 23 across both systems. Any input is greatly appreciated!!

  • Install GNU Emacs GUI in Fedora

    - by FLW
I've installed the "emacs" package from yum, but typing emacs at the terminal doesn't launch the GUI version. I was under the impression it installed by default, and emacs -nw would be used for the terminal version. Is there a GUI package available for Fedora 14 (GNOME)? I couldn't find "emacs-gtk" or "emacs-gnome" or any X packages with yum search emacs-. Edit: To clarify, this is about GNU Emacs and not XEmacs.

  • How to set Grub to automatically load Xen kernel

    - by Cerin
How do you configure Grub to automatically use the Xen kernel under Ubuntu 11.10? No matter what I do, it loads the first menuentry. The only way I can get it to load Xen is to manually select the kernel, which I can't do if I have to reboot the server remotely, or there's a power failure and the machine automatically boots up when power's restored, etc. It's driving me nuts. In my /boot/grub/grub.cfg, the Xen kernel is at index 4 (i.e. it's the 5th menuentry). So I've tried: Setting GRUB_DEFAULT=4, and running sudo update-grub Setting GRUB_DEFAULT=saved and GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true, and running sudo update-grub Setting GRUB_DEFAULT="Ubuntu GNU/Linux, with Xen 4.1-amd64 and Linux 3.0.0-16-server", and running sudo update-grub None of these work. It continues to load the first menuentry, which is "Ubuntu, with Linux 3.0.0-16-server". Below is my current /boot/grub/grub.cfg. What am I doing wrong? # # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE # # It is automatically generated by grub-mkconfig using templates # from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub # ### BEGIN • How to make Eclipse CDT's Linux GCC toolchain resolve C++ standard library headers?

    - by Muhammad Khan
In Ubuntu 12.04 LTS I installed the Eclipse CDT plugin and opened the new hello world project to just test everything out. When I was creating the project, I chose the only toolchain: "Linux GCC" When the project is created, however, it says that #include<iostream> #include<cstdlb> are unresolved. Thus, lines with cout and endl can't be used and it cannot find std. using namespace std; is also causing problems. How can I get my #include directives for standard library headers recognized, to support code using the std namespace?

  • Brief explanation for executables in a GNU/Clang Toolchain?

    - by ZhangChn
I roughly understand that cc, ld and other parts are called in a certain sequence according to schemes like Makefiles etc. Some of those commands are used to generate those configs and Makefiles. And some other tools are used to deal with libraries. But what are other parts used for? How are they called in this process? Which tool would use various parser generators? Which part is optional? Why? Is there a brief summary get these explained on how the tools in a GNU or LLVM/Clang toolchain are organised and called in a C/C++ project building? Thanks in advance. • Unrecognized option: -o Could not create the Java virtual machine.

    - by Kerubu
I've got an unusual build error when using Buildroot to create an image for my Phidget SBC. It's unusual because it occurs ONLY on my development laptop and NOT on my general use laptop even though I am using EXACTLY the same Builroot environment as published by Phidgets themselves. When I try to create my Buildroot image I get the following error when it attempts to compile GNU classpath: Making all in tools make[2]: Entering directory `/home/xxxx/buildroot_phidgetsbc/buildroot-phidgetsbc_1.0.4.20111028/output/build/classpath-0.98/tools' /bin/mkdir -p classes asm /bin/mkdir -p ../tools/generated/gnu/classpath/tools/gjdoc/expr java -classpath antlr.Tool -o ../tools/generated/gnu/classpath/tools/gjdoc/expr/ \ ./gnu/classpath/tools/gjdoc/expr/java-expression.g Unrecognized option: -o Could not create the Java virtual machine. make[2]: *** [tools.zip] Error 1 The only difference I can possibly thing of is the different Linux (Ubuntu) versions I am using on each laptop. Also I cannot find a -o option documented for Java and don't understand why it works on one laptop but not the other. Any suggestions would be helpful.
