• Fuzzy Sound / Crackling

  Whenever I play music through my headphones on my laptop, I get a little bit of fuzz or cracking that is noticeable at lower volumes. When I listen through my phone, the sound is much clearer, both when music is playing and nothing is playing. The noise is more noticeable with my Sennheiser 280 PRO headphones than with earbuds. Is there anything I can do to improve audio playback on my laptop? I am surprised that the audio quality is better on my phone than my laptop which should have better hardware.

• Automatic switching between "digital output" (HDMI) and built-in speakers in Vista

  We occasionally connect my wife's laptop, which runs Vista, to our TV. Whenever we do this we have to manually switch the default audio output to "digital output" for the sound to go through the HDMI connection, and we also have to restart any apps that we want to send sound to the TV. We then have to perform a similar process when disconnecting. Is there any way to just have this be automatic? It seems absurd to have to do so much manual fiddling when a 40 year old transistor radio is "smart" enough to turn off the speakers and send sound to the headphones when headphones are plugged in. In case it helps, the name "RealTek" shows up in the sound card settings dialog.

• erratic audio levels on windows vista

  I'm somewhat hard of hearing. I've been listening to my windows Vista machine with a pair of headphones so I don't annoy the others. I have 2 issues: 1) the volume varies enormously depending on the source. Having a windows alert occur while I am listening to a DVD or Youtube is a painful experience. Is there a preferred way to set all the different audio controls so I have a more constant volume? I already have lowered the volumes of the windows alerts. 2)Is there a way to limit the volume of my headphones to protect what is left of my hearing? Is there a software solution or should I be going for a hardware limiter? thanks retired dude

• Strange sound from Laptop, Microphone, Speakers or Soundcard?

  I have recently purchased a second hand computer. There didn't seem to be anything wrong with it on purchasing, however recently I have noticed a small issue. Any time I play sound or listen through my headphones, I can hear what seems to be the CPU working (ie when beginning a new task, there is a small crackling). Also if I tap my laptop I can hear the sound louder, as if it is being picked up by the mic and then playing that sound in real time through the speakers or headphones. I have tried reading other topics but cannot find an answer to this question. These are the specs I am running on; Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit Pentium Dual Core CPU T4300 @ 2.10Ghz 2.10Ghz I hope someone can help me with this issue, it would be much appreciated.

• Windows 7 Skype shifts audio to speakers

  I have noticed a strange feature on my Dell Latitude running Windows 7 and Skype. When I am listening to music on the headphones, and Skype rings, then the audio I was listening to is redirected to the computer speakers, while Skype takes over the headphones. This is infuriating as my co-workers are treated to 1 second snippets of whatever rubbish I have on at the time. Any ideas on how to stop this happening? I messed with some of the settings on Skype, but nothing seems to make any difference.

• Force Windows to output only mono sound

  So, the 'right' half of my pair of headphones broke (the transducer+wire are fine, but the earpiece broke on the headband and so the earpiece won't sit over my ear). So now the right channel is being broadcast to my cube neighbors when I wear my headphones. Yes, they look very silly. Is there a way to ensure, in Windows XP (or Windows Media Player), that all stereo sound is downmixed to the left channel only (ie, in mono) so my neighbors don't hear my music? I know that I can setup the mixer to set the balance to 100% left, but information in the right channel won't be heard.

• iPhone Docked Playing Through PC, Buzzing.

  Hi. I have an iPhone that I fit into an Apple dock. There is an audio cable from dock into the line in on my sound card. My headphones are plugged into the line out. I get this really quite buzz that is fairly constant, but changes as the iphone "does stuff". It's not so bad when the music is playing. But when it stops I get the buzz, so I can't really use my headphones as "noise cancellation." It doesn't help to change my volume sliders on the PC. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

  I have microphone audio, which comes instantly to my speaker. I am using default pulseaudio and alsa from the package. I have tried to setup: 1) PA /etc/pulse/default.pa /etc/asound.conf $ ls analog-input-aux.conf analog-input-fm.conf analog-input-mic.conf analog-input-tvtuner.conf analog-output-desktop-speaker.conf analog-output-mono.conf analog-input.conf analog-input-front-mic.conf analog-input-mic.conf.common analog-input-video.conf analog-output-headphones-2.conf analog-output-speaker.conf analog-input.conf.common analog-input-internal-mic.conf analog-input-mic-line.conf analog-output.conf analog-output-headphones.conf iec958-stereo-output.conf analog-input-dock-mic.conf analog-input-linein.conf analog-input-rear-mic.conf analog-output.conf.common analog-output-lfe-on-mono.conf 2) ALSA in lsmod to make sure no loopback modules are loaded etc but none is resolving it. And there are many less information available on this. Has anyone similar problem solution in Ubuntu 11.10? (this problem i have resolved in Ubuntu 11.04 by replacing the default pulseaudio version to latest source from git, but while trying the same in Ubuntu 11.10 does not worked). Any tips please?

• How should developers handle subpar working conditions? [closed]

  I have been working in my current job for less than a year and at the beginning didn't have the courage to say anything about the things that bothered me. Now I'm a bit fed up and need things to get better. The first problem is not random but I'll mention it anyway. We are running out of space so every new employee gets a smaller table. We are promised that the space problem will be fixed soon. Almost every employee has a different keyboard, mouse, headphones (if any). Mine are $10 keyboard, some random cheap mouse and some random crappy headphones with a mic. All these were used and dirty when I got them. The number of monitor is 1-3 and with different sizes. I have 2 nice monitors and can't complain but some are given 1 small monitor. When it's their first job they don't have the guts to ask for 2 even if most others have 2. Nobody seems to care too. Project manager asked if it's ok? He obviously said he can handle the 1 small one. Then the manager said you can go ask for 1 more. I'm watching this and think go and ask where? The company is trying to hire more people but is not doing much after the person has signed the contract. We are put in one room that is open to the hallway and it's super noisy. Almost like a zoo at times. Even if nobody is talking the crappy keyboards make too much noise. Is this normal? Am I too negative and should I just do my job with what I was given? Should I demand better things? Should the company have some system that everybody gets things in some price range?

• Sound in Ubuntu 12.10 on Chromebook

  I've got an HP Chromebook 14 that I've rooted and installed Ubuntu via Crouton (upgraded to 12.10) and most things are working nicely. One issue that I am having trouble solving relates to sound. I've got sound output that I can control via the individual app (e.g. Youtube), but when trying to control the volume via the built-in xfce4-mixer, I get the following error: GStreamer was unable to detect any sound devices. Some sound system specific GStreamer packages may be missing. It may also be a permissions problem. Opening a terminal, I can run the alsamixer and control the volume levels. It is reporting back that the card is CRAS. I'd love to be able to do it from XFCE and the built-in mixer. I've tried re-installing the GStreamer packages, but no luck. It seems like I am close but not sure where to go from here. On a maybe unrelated note, plugging headphones into the headphone jack in Ubuntu also does not stop the sound from coming from the speakers and nothing comes through the headphones. Switching back to ChromeOs, everything works as expected, so I think that it's a driver issue.

  I have installed ubuntu GNOME 14.04 in my macbook Pro 13" mid 2012, and something is wrong with the headphones jack, a red led is on and it just can be turned off with the alsamixer command and muting a special section (I'm sorry for not remember the setting, I'm on OS X for work reasons) I already know how to fix it, but I want to know how to save the setting in the alsamixer, because with every reboot the red led is back.   Question: Is it possible to use FM radio WITHOUT internet connection or special devices ? On my Android phone, I can plug in the headphones, which are in turn used as antenna. Since Android is Linux and Ubuntu is also Linux, it should be possible to do this on a plain old Ubuntu notebook (13.04), too. Is it ? If yes, which application can I use for FM-Radio ? Note: I repeat: Live FM-Radio WITHOUT internet connection at the time of listening :)

Sometimes, when before you had something quiet, you had to adjust it more louder and after some time you want to play another media - bang! it unexpectedly breaks your headphones, the sound is so loud! I'm installing sickrage and couchpotato and headphones, and will be doing multiple installs I made a small batch script just to install everything but what I don't know how to do is automatically make them auto start on boot. Since they all require a file to be created I do not know how to make this file auto create and populate what needs to be put into it.

  All works pretty good, I remember I didn't nothing unusual,just I installed a especific flash plugin to nuvola player, I can ear the sound with my headphones, but I can't I hear sound from the speakers. When I put in the terminal pulseaudio appears crash when trying to start the daemon I leave screenshot and in the System configuration in output play sound through is empty, in the past there appears 4 options I need reinstall pulseaudio??? • Windows Audio Issue

  This one is driving me nuts. Hoping someone can shed some light. I'm running windows 7 using onboard audio. It's been fine for over 2 years but lately there's a problem every time I play audio. I hear a small soft burst of static and the volume turns itself down from 50% to 23%. Once at 23%, it plays fine. No related events logged in viewer. No reported problems with the device. Different headphones, same problem. I played around with audio settings for hours but the problem persists. EDIT: ok more info: Motherboard: ECS G31T-M LGA775 System info displays this: Name High Definition Audio Device Manufacturer Microsoft Status OK PNP Device ID HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_1106&DEV_E721&SUBSYS_10192683&REV_1001\4&3D4E739&0&0001 Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\hdaudio.sys (6.1.7600.16385, 297.00 KB (304,128 bytes), 14/07/2009 9:51 AM) I'll keep adding info as I find it. The question I want resolved is; Is it faulty hardware? If so, I can buy a sound card. I can't imagine software is responsible since I haven't installed anything new for weeks. Virus scans are clear as well. The static burst is irritating to say the least. Tried 2 different headphones and separate speakers. Same problem. I know it's not an easy problem but I was hoping someone had encountered the same thing.

• Downmix ALL SYSTEM audio to mono - Windows 7

  I'm deaf in one ear and want to use my headphones when playing a game and talking with my friends on Skype/TS/Mumble/etc while also sometimes listening to music. I need ALL my system audio to be downmixed to mono so that my ONE hearing ear gets ALL audio channels instead of split stereo audio. No, none of the other similar questions on superuser have a solution. My headphone properties does not have a 'Mono' option, I don't have a 'Headphone Virtualization' option, and my Realtek HD audio driver software doesn't have these options either (driver was updated 11/14/2012). Don't even talk about setting the balance of one side of the headphones to 0. You're not paying attention if you suggest that. JACK and Virtual Audio Cable didn't work. It's possible I configured them wrong, but I followed the steps I found in related questions and still got split stereo out. TL;DR I need a viable, working, software solution (I say software because I have a USB headset) for forcing ALL system audio to mono so that I can hear literally everything through the one earpiece. • Setting Up a Virtual Sound Device To Stream Output via TCP/IP

  I'm looking to take an audio signal from a computer (1/8"), or multiple computers if possible, and send its output to some sort of switch/audio box that would allow me to choose between different receiving devices - say between headphones and a receiver.
