    I am busy preparing for exams, just doing some old exam papers. The question below is the only one I can't seem to do (I don't really know where to start). Any help would be appreciated greatly. Use the O(nlogn) comparison sort bound, the theta(n) bound for bottom-up heap construction, and the order complexity if insertion sort to show that the worst-case number of inversions in a heap is O(nlogn).

  • C++ difference between "char *" and "char * = new char[]"

    So, if I want to declare an array of characters I can go this way char a[2]; char * a ; char * a = new char[2]; Ignoring the first declaration, the other two use pointers. As far as I know the third declaration is stored in heap and is freed using the delete operator . does the second declaration also hold the array in heap ? Does it mean that if something is stored in heap and not freed can be used anywhere in a file like a variable with file linkage ? I tried both third and second declaration in one function and then using the variable in another but it didn't work, why ? Are there any other differences between the second and third declarations ?

    does java 6 generate thread dump in addition to heap dump (java_pid14941.hprof) this is what happened to one of my applications. java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: GC overhead limit exceeded Dumping heap to java_pid14941.hprof ... I did find ava_pid14941.hprof in working directory, but didn't find any file which contains thread dump. I need to know what all the threads were doing when I got this OutOfMemory error. Is there any configuration option which will generate thread dump in addition to heap dump on out of memory exception?

    Hi I am working on an application for android and we since we have lots of graphics, we use a lot of memory. I monitor the memory heap size and its about 3-4 Mb , and peeks of 5Mb when I do something that requires more memory (and then goes back to 3). This is not a big deal, but some other stuff is handled outside the heap memory, like loading of drawables. For example if I run the ddms tool outside eclipse, and go to sysinfo, I see that my app is taking 20Mb on the Droid and 12 on the G1, but heap size are the same in both, because data is the same but images are different. So the questions are: How do I know what is taking the memory outside the heap memory? What other stuff takes memory outside the heap memory? Complex layouts (big tree) ? Animations? Thanks Daniel

When I compile this code it shows me at last line that it is not heap. Maybe because the index starts from 1 and we don't pay attention to index 0, yes?

Please look at the following code: public class Class1 { int A; //as I uderstand, int is value type and therefore lives in the stack } class Class2 { Run() { Class1 instance1 = new Class1(); instance1.A = 10; //it points to value type, but isnt this reference (on heap)? } } Or while creating the instance of Class1, its field types are created on the heap as well? But then I do not understand when it would really be on the stack as almost always you need to create an instance of object in order to use it fields.

    On PSOD no VMKernel Dump File is written to disk and no message is written to screen (the screen is either blank or full of dashes). I need this data to understand why the system crashes; any help as to how to fix this to write a dump file would be appreciated. Thanks.     I have a mysql database on a server that is around 4 gb in size and I couldn't get it downloaded to my local machine. I tried getting a dump on the server, but the dump is not getting created probably because of the big size. Is there any way, I could get the dump downloaded on my local machine? I can syncing using Sqlyog but I know it will take ages. Is there a way, I can get a dump created on the server? By the way, my server is a linux server and its running php/mysql.

  • Java thread dump where main thread has no call stack? (jsvc)

    We have a java process running as a daemon (under jsvc). Every several days it just stops doing any work; output to the logfile stops (it is pretty verbose, on 5-minute intervals) and it consumes no CPU or IO. There are no exceptions logged in the logfile nor in syserr or sysout. The last log statement is just prior to a db commit being done, but there is no open connection on the db server (MySQL) and reviewing the code, there should always be additional log output after that, even if it had encountered an exception that was going to bubble up. The most curious thing I find is that in the thread dump (included below), there's no thread in our code at all, and the main thread seems to have no context whatsoever: "main" prio=10 tid=0x0000000000614000 nid=0x445d runnable [0x0000000000000000] java.lang.Thread.State: RUNNABLE As noted earlier, this is a daemon process running using jsvc, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it (I can restructure the code to also allow running it directly, to test). Suddenly it crashdumps, after which all pooled connections are invalid and it goes into admin-only mode (only sa can connect) The short stackdump is below.   • Java heap keeps on shrinking! What is happening in this graph of heap size?

    Hi Guys, This is a screen shot of a JVM (win64, 6u17) running ActiveMQ, after every garbage collection the heap size is reducing. As the heap size reduces garbage collection gets more frequent and the heap reduces more quickly. Eventually the VM locks up as it's spending all it's time in GC. -Xms is the default and -Xmx is 2048mb. What is happening!!?   • Where to check for heap memory size and its usage statistics etc... in windows?

    Lets say I open some application or process. Did some work with that. Now I closed it. Need to know whether this application caused any memory leak. i.e used up some heap memory and not cleared it properly. Can I get this statistics some how? I'm using Visual Studio (for development) under Windows OS. Even I would be interested in knowing this information for any 3rd party application.
