• Is USB supported in safe mode on XP?

  According Microsoft, "Universal Serial Bus Devices Do Not Work in Safe Mode" under XP. However, in my testing this is incorrect. USB keyboards, mice and flash drives seem to work fine in safe mode (I made sure the BIOS was not providing support). This makes sense because a failure of a standard input device would be, in Microsoft parlance, a "bad user experience". So, Is USB supported in safe mode on XP? If your answer is no (agreeing with Microsoft), please provide a test case, preferably in a virtual machine, where a standard HID keyboard or mouse fails. Please state hardware / BIOS / OS configuration. Note that you will need a PS/2 keyboard attached in addition to your USB device(s) in order to use the boot menu. Virtual machine software usually emulates a PS/2 keyboard. Alternatively, you could add the /safeboot switch to boot.ini. If your answer is yes, please provide a link to some supporting documentation (either from Microsoft or someone authoritative). Your answer might be "devices X, Y and Z are supported but nothing else", in which case also give a link.

• emacs ORG-mode "headless" export-as commands?

  When I use org-export-as-latex or org-export-as-html orgmode turns my buffer into a .tex file or .html file. But I don't want all the extra junk that it adds to the file: I want to handle the documentclass and everything myself and just \input the org mode generated file. (Or the analogous things for html with php). So if my org file just has: * Section - Stuff - Things I want the org mode command to output just \section{Section} \begin{itemize} \item Stuff \item Things \end{itemize} Without any of the extra \tableofcontents junk that ORG adds to it. I know I could define my own kind of #+LaTeX_CLASS that could add the packages I want and so on, but I don't want to do things that way (and that wouldn't remove the \maketitle or the spurious \vspace* that ORG insists on inserting. Is there a command to do this "headless" parsing and converting? I had a look but it's not obvious from the documentation. Presumably some low level ORG command is doing the parsing and converting I want, but I couldn't find what it was called from looking at the docs and C-h pages... This is not a question about HTML or LaTeX but about emacs ORG mode. So don't kick it off to some other site...

• Encapsulating user input of data for a class (C++)

  For an assignment I've made a simple C++ program that uses a superclass (Student) and two subclasses (CourseStudent and ResearchStudent) to store a list of students and print out their details, with different details shown for the two different types of students (using overriding of the display() method from Student). My question is about how the program collects input from the user of things like the student name, ID number, unit and fee information (for a course student) and research information (for research students): My implementation has the prompting for user input and the collecting of that input handled within the classes themselves. The reasoning behind this was that each class knows what kind of input it needs, so it makes sense to me to have it know how to ask for it (given an ostream through which to ask and an istream to collect the input from). My lecturer says that the prompting and input should all be handled in the main program, which seems to me somewhat messier, and would make it trickier to extend the program to handle different types of students. I am considering, as a compromise, to make a helper class that handles the prompting and collection of user input for each type of Student, which could then be called on by the main program. The advantage of this would be that the student classes don't have as much in them (so they're cleaner), but also they can be bundled with the helper classes if the input functionality is required. This also means more classes of Student could be added without having to make major changes to the main program, as long as helper classes are provided for these new classes. Also the helper class could be swapped for an alternative language version without having to make any changes to the class itself. What are the major advantages and disadvantages of the three different options for user input (fully encapsulated, helper class or in the main program)?

My input field is: <label for="frmComTelephone">Telephone</label> <input type="number" name="Telephone" id="frmComTelephone"/> But that CSS isn't working how do I solve this? 2ND problem is I have the following CSS: input:focus { background-color:yellow; } input[type="text"], input[type="date"],input[type="time"],input[type="number"],textarea,select { border-radius:5px; border-width: 1px; border-style: solid; border-color: #C6C6C6; height:41px; background-color: #FF3434; width: 100%; } But when the item is focused it doesn't change to yellow, if i remove "background-color: #FF3434;" it turns yellow on focus?   If I go to Sound Recording Devices and it says "No audio devices are installed" If I click to set up a microphone I get an error "Wizard could not launch, No audio input device found, make sure your audio hardware is working properly and check your audio configuration in the Audio Devices and Sound Themes control panel. Where can I get an audio input device? I just want something so I can actually use the microphone on my headset. This is ridiculous. I have tried to look for any file but I simply cannot find a way to add an audio input device... I really do not want to format my computer just for this problem but I am starting to feel like that is the only option I have. I have the latest chipsets

• How to create a virtual input in windows from an audio stream

  Great to find this forum full of knowledge. I was wondering if anyone knew of an application or other work around to create a virtual input device in windows. I have a IP cam app on my android phone, that I would like to use for skype webcam. It comes with a port for getting the video feed into skype, and that works great. However, the only audio available, is a OGG stream. Both video and audio work great with media players such as VLC etc, but ot with skype, since skype only works with windows input devices. Is there such software outthere, in which I could simply name my audio stream address, and pipe that to a virtual input device to allow skype to find it?

  I'm using 2 and sometimes more input methods in windows I use ALT + left Shift for switching between languages. Sometimes, every once in a while, another action(s) trigger the language switch. It happens in the same application, (i.e. the input language changes for the same app without my request) or, while switching tasks with Alt-Tab, which causes language input to change in an arbitrary application's context. I realized that some of these actions could be the use of the scroll wheel button. It's super annoying How do I disable any other language switching, and stay only with alt+shift? • iptables: built-in INPUT chain in nat table?

  I have a Gentoo Linux system running linux 2.6.38-rc8. I also have a machine running Ubuntu with linux 2.6.35-27. I also have a virtual machine running Debian Unstable with linux 2.6.37-2. On the Gentoo and Debian systems I have an INPUT chain built into my nat table in addition to PREROUTING, OUTPUT, and POSTROUTING. On Ubuntu, I only have PREROUTING, OUTPUT, and POSTROUTING. I am able to use this INPUT chain to use SNAT to modify the source of a packet that is destined to the local machine (imagine simulating an incoming spoofed IP to a local application or just to test a virtual host configuration). This is possible with 2 firewall rules on Gentoo and Debian but seemingly not so on Ubuntu. I looked around for documentation on changes to the SNAT target and the INPUT chain of the nat table and I couldn't find anything. Does anyone know if this is a configuration issue or is it something that was just added in more recent versions of linux?

  I have used Windows XP Mode in Windows Professional 7 once a week for around 2 years to run Quicken 98. About 2 weeks ago the XP Mode completely stopped working. I get different responses when I try to launch. I can sometimes see a launch screen for XP (which I never used to get) which then hangs Sometimes I just get a black screen Sometimes I get an error message in a cmd like interface that says "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt \system32\ntoskrnl.exe please reinstall a copy of the above file. I have noticed that in the tools tab at the top of the screen "enable integration features" is greyed out. Any recommendations? Ian

• Mac won't boot into safe mode

  Mac boots fine normally, except when in safe mode. Holding down shift when booting gets me to the progress bar on the grey screen. Progress bar gets about half way before mac reboots. I modified nvram boot-args to get a better look: sudo nvram boot-args="-x -v" It definitely gets through fsck, skips loading kernel extensions (since it's in safe mode), does something with the network interfaces, then this is the last thing it wips through... • Win7 XP mode install fails with cryptic error

  Trying to install XPmode on Win7 Professional 64-bit SP1, but getting an error. I downloaded XPMode, Virtual PC and the update as specified here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx. When I open XP mode for the first time it goes into the setup ("Setting up Windows XP Mode for first use..."; pick your VM password, etc.), then it runs through the progress bar until almost the end (99%?). At that point I get the error: Could not complete Setup. Please try again. Whats going on here? I've uninstalled Virtual PC and xpmode, and reinstalled in several different orders, no luck. Is there some log file that will tell me whats happening? Theres nothing showing up in the Event log that I can find. How can I fix this?

  Today while uploading file to FTP sever, the codes throw an error - "The remote server returned an error: 227 Entering Passive Mode", after research, I got some knowledge in FTP working principle. FTP may run in active or passive mode, which determines how the data connection is established. Active mode: command connection: client >1024  -> server 21 data connection:    client >1024  <-  server 20 passive mode: command connection: client > 1024 -> server 21 data connection:    client > 1024 <- server > 1024 In active mode, the client connects from a random unprivileged port (N > 1023) to the FTP server's command port(default port 21). If the client needs to transfer data, the client will use PORT command to tell the server:"hi, I opened port XXXX, please connect to me." and then server will use port 20 to initiate the data connection to that client port number. In passive mode, the client connects from a random unprivileged port (N > 1023) to the FTP server's command port(default port 21). If the client needs to transfer data, the sever will tell the client:"hi, I opened port XXXX , please connect to me." and then client will initiate the data connection to that sever port number. In a nutshell, active mode is used to have the server connect to the client, and passive mode is used to have the client connect to the server. So if your FTP server is configured to work in active mode only or the firewalls between your client and the server are blocking the data port range, then you will get error message, to fix this issue, just set System.Net.FtpWebRequest property UsePassive = false.   As the question says, for some reason my program is not flushing the input or using my variables in ways that I cannot identify at the moment. This is for a homework project that I've gone beyond what I had to do for it, now I just want the program to actually work :P Details to make the finding easier: The program executes flawlessly on the first run through. All throws work, only the proper values( n 0 ) are accepted and turned into binary. As soon as I enter my terminate input, the program goes into a loop and only asks for the termiante again like so: When I run this program on Netbeans on my Linux Laptop, the program crashes after I input the terminate value. On Visual C++ on Windows it goes into the loop like just described. In the code I have tried to clear every stream and initialze every variable new as the program restarts, but to no avail. I just can't see my mistake.   Hi, I'm using Linux for years and now I have to work with Windows XP at work. The problem is I don't like default shortcuts for switching keyboard input languages: [CTRL]+[SHIFT] and [ALT]+[SHIFT]. And I'd really like to change the shortcut to the one I'm using in Linux [SHIFT]+[SHIFT]. I've googled for a while, played with registry but have not found any solution. If a user have posted the form, and something is entered into one of the fields, then I can't show the default value in the field, if the user deletes the text from the input field. This is happening because the value of the text-field is still containing something, even when the user deletes the content. So my problem is how to show the default value when the form is submitted, and the user then removes the typed in content? When the form is submitted the input looks like this, and keeps looking like this until the form is submitted again: <input type="text" value="someValue" defaultvalue="From" /> So I need to show the default value in the input-field right after the user have deleted the content in the field, and removed the focus from the field. Does everyone understand what my problem is? Otherwise just ask, I have struggled with this one for quite some times now, so any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Kim Andersen

• Realtek HD Audio 5.1 Optical Input (from Xbox 360)

  I'm trying to connect up my Xbox 360 digital audio to my 5.1 speakers via my PC (my LCD has dual input, DVI for the PC, D-SUB for the Xbox). The motherboard has a Realtek ALC888 chipset and I have a 5.1 speaker system connected via 3 x 3.5mm jacks (FR/FL, RR/RL, C/LFE) and I get full 5.1 output from the PC. I have connected the optical audio cable from the Xbox to the Optical In on the motherboard's backplate. With the Xbox in Digital Stereo mode I get 2 channel audio from the Xbox, through the PC, to the speakers. With the Xbox in Dolby Digital 5.1 mode I get no sound at all. I have the latest Realtek drivers installed in Win 7 32-bit. Questions: Is it possible to use the full 5.1 DD from the Xbox? If so, am I missing some option(s) in the Realtek setup? Do I need some other piece of software to do this? (AC3Filter or FFDShow perhaps) Many thanks

• Prevent python from printing newline

  I have this code in Python inputted = input("Enter in something: ") print("Input is {0}, including the return".format(inputted)) that outputs Enter in something: something Input is something , including the newline I am not sure what is happening; if I use variables that don't depend on user input, I do not get the newline after formatting with the variable. I suspect Python might be taking in the newline as input when I hit return. How can I make it so that the input does not include any newlines so that I may compare it to other strings/characters? (e.g. something == 'a')

• Windows 7 XP Mode disable time sync

  So I've tried the trick from Virtual PC 2007, adding the following section to the vmc configuration file: <components> <host_time_sync> <enabled type="boolean">false</enabled> </host_time_sync> </components> Later someone suggested VPC doesn't want the components level so added this instead: <host_time_sync> <enabled type="boolean">false</enabled> <frequency type="integer">15</frequency> <threshold type="integer">10</threshold> </host_time_sync> When I start up XP Mode (Microsoft Virtual PC) it completely ignores any of these two configuration changes and if I change the clock it's instantly reset to the host time again. I've also obviously disabled the Windows Time service but as it's not joined to a domain or set up with a source it shouldn't be involved anyway. I need to test an application over a few midnight passes and thought the XP Mode machine would be perfect, so I didn't have to mess with my workstation clock... is there any way to get the VPC guest to not sync time with the host? This is easy in Hyper-V ;p

• Networking DOS within Windows 7 XP Mode, with a Windows XP/7 Networked Share

  For awhile now, one of my clients has been stuck with Corel Paradox 4.0 (it used to be the biggest database system in the DOS days, until Microsoft released Access in the early 90's) so for awhile I've managed to keep it on life support on Windows XP for a few years, however since switching to Windows 7 x64, I've had to resort to using XP Mode as the sandbox to keep it up and running. While I am able to run Paradox as usual in XP Mode, I'm having a serious issue where if I try connecting the install to the network share (which is located on the Windows 7 portion of the system), Paradox keeps exiting because it says the serial number is invalid. Now, I know for a fact that this is an issue with the virtual loopback adapter and also having the VM linked to the physical ethernet adapter -- and while I have solved this issue before, most of my fixes have been bandages since after a few weeks the issue pops up again. Long story short, I wanted to ask if there is a permanent way to link a DOS program to a network share address. For example, when I try doing \tsclient\paradox (the Windows 7 Address) I keep getting an error saying I need a valid network address. I've tried mapping that folder to various drive letters such as P:\Paradox -- but for some reason that keeps failing over time. For what it's worth, Paradox uses a .SOM file to store the network settings, however it isn't editable in Notepad but rather it's controlled by a wizard in Paradox. But if that extension rings any bells, I'd welcome any insights.

• How can I get Japanese, Chinese and Korean input to work properly on Skype, aMsn and other softwares

  I have installed the packages for Japanese (Anthy),and those for Chinese and Korean input. They work perfectly on most of the software that come with Ubuntu, such as the LibreOffice suite and the browsers, however, I cannot input any of these three languages on Skype, aMsn or almost any software I have downloaded/installed myself. For example I have installed a Japanese-English dictionary called Tagaini Jisho, and I CANNOT input Japanese on it! I love Ubuntu, except the issues I have been experincing when I want to use these language tools. Can anybody please help me about this issue. Thank you in advance. Best regards

• What are the files in /dev/input/ and what they do?

  I'm fairly new to ubuntu and I've started to search around everywhere and check everything! Recently I saw these files at /dev/input/eventX, js0, mice, mouseX. By printing the output using "cat" I realized they are somehow responsible for mouse and keyboard input but the output had an strange character encoding (even for the keyboard). My questions are, what are these files and how can I interpret the data of these files? Are there any other places that I can access the input/output of my Ubuntu machine? And are there any ebooks, manual or something similar that I can check the duty and structure of ubuntu system files? (i.e. to find the answer of such question)
