  • Upstart multiple instances of service not working

    I started playing with MongoDB on Lucid. Now I would like to run a DB and Config server on the same box. They both use the same binary to launch, but with different config files and running on different ports. All directories for log and lib is split so one goes to mongodb and the other to mongoconf. Each process can be started without any problems on their own. start mongodb stop mongodb start mongoconf stop mongoconf But if I try to start both, the second one would just start and exit. Using 'initctl log-priority debug' I got the following in the logs. Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: event_finished: Finished started event Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: job_process_handler: Ignored event 1 (1) for process 5690 Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: mongoconf (mongoconf) main process (5690) terminated with status 1 Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: mongoconf (mongoconf) goal changed from start to stop Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: mongoconf (mongoconf) state changed from running to stopping man 5 init shows that you can use instance names to differentiate the two. I tried using 'instance mongoconf' in the on upstart script and 'instance mongodb' in the other one, and it still fails. I can manually start the other process, so there is definitely no conflicts on port numbers or directories. Any ideas on what to try or how to get output on why it is 'terminated with status 1'?   • how can I git-revise configs in my /etc/ dir? (sudo has different keys..)

    I'd like to keep some of the folders in my /etc/ dir git-revised, cause I'm quite new to server administration and am constantly messing around in my /etc/nginx/ and /etc/bind/ directories. I've heard of people git-revising their either /etc/ directories, but that seems a bit like overkill, as at this point I'm only messing in those 2 subdirectories. The problem I'm having is that if I sudo my git operations, I don't have the right pubkeys to push to my remote repo (bitbucket). But if I don't sudo, I need to mess around with all the permissions (again, not very pro at this). Does anyone know best practices for managing their configs? or how I should solve this problem?   • Fast extraction of a time range from syslog logfile?

    I've got a logfile in the standard syslog format. It looks like this, except with hundreds of lines per second: Jan 11 07:48:46 blahblahblah... Jan 11 07:49:00 blahblahblah... Jan 11 07:50:13 blahblahblah... Jan 11 07:51:22 blahblahblah... Jan 11 07:58:04 blahblahblah... It doesn't roll at exactly midnight, but it'll never have more than two days in it. I often have to extract a timeslice from this file. I'd like to write a general-purpose script for this, that I can call like: $ timegrep 22:30-02:00 /logs/something.log ...and have it pull out the lines from 22:30, onward across the midnight boundary, until 2am the next day. There are a few caveats: I don't want to have to bother typing the date(s) on the command line, just the times. The program should be smart enough to figure them out. The log date format doesn't include the year, so it should guess based on the current year, but nonetheless do the right thing around New Year's Day. I want it to be fast -- it should use the fact that the lines are in order to seek around in the file and use a binary search. Before I spend a bunch of time writing this, does it already exist?

The report contains the following information. • Department Name • Head of Department Name • Month • Minimum spending of the month • Maximum spending of the month Your program is to obtain the name of the input file from the user. That’s not true because most authors get an advance royalty that is paid before the book is published. That’s the author’s main incentive for writing the book, at least as far as money is concerned. (If money is your main concern, don’t write books.) What is true is that most authors never see any money beyond the advance royalty. Royalty rates are very low. A 10% royalty of the publisher’s price is considered normal. The publisher’s price is usually 45% of the retail price. So if you pay full price in a bookstore, the author gets 4.5% of your money. If there’s more than one author, they split the royalty. It doesn’t take a math degree to figure out that a book needs to sell quite a few copies for the royalty to add up to a meaningful amount of money. But Steven and I must have done something right.   • Apple New Year alarm bug cause

    As many people know, Apple has a bug in their iPhone that prevented alarms from going off at 1st and 2nd of January 2011. What is strange is how that bug might happen - i.e., as far as I know this bug happens in all timezones and nobody is switching off DST on Jan 1st, so it's not timezone or DST-related. Also, Jan 1st seems to be nothing special as a UNIX timestamp, so something like sign change or integer overflow can't be the reason. It is highly improbably that alarm code has something like if(date == JANUARY_1_2011 || date == JANUARY_2_2011) turn_alarms_off(); - that would be a sabotage and not a bug. So the question is - could you imagine and describe a bug that would cause the alarm to fail exactly at Jan 1st and 2nd everywhere while letting it work otherwise, without specifically referring to those exact dates? Of course, if somebody knows the real cause, that would be a definite answer, but if nobody knows it - I think it is interesting to think what might be the cause of such strange bug.

    I'm seeing a significant number of non-HTTP requests hitting a site I just launched. They show up in the server (nginx) logs as non-ASCII and get rejected (correctly) with a 400 status.   • Why do most songs in my media collection play twice? - Corrupt media?

    Problem: Whether I'm playing the media with Rhythmbox on Ubuntu, Winamp on Windows, or my Nokia N95's media player, most of my audio files (OK, maybe only 40%) play twice. Info: I have a 500GB external 2.5" WD HDD, with a 150GB primary FAT32 partition labeled MUSIC. Inside this, I have about 500 folders containing about 10,000 MP3/WMA/M4A/WAV files. I manage the drive using Ubuntu 9.10, and frequently copy data to/from it using RSYNC, or on windows, TotalCopy. The visual output is different in each media player, but it behaves as if the 1 MP3 has the same song on it twice, and as soon as it ends it begins again. Winamp shows that the song goes for 2x as long as it should, The N95's media player shows the progress bar off the right-hand-side of the screen when it begins playing (then jumps back to the left, then continues along...). Rhythmbox doesn't show me how long the song is, nor does the progress bar move along the screen. Plea: It seams to me somewhere along the lines my collection has become corrupt... but where? And how? and please someone tell me I can fix it!! TIA, Dean.

  • Problems with DNS propagation 10 days after a change was made

    The engineering team I work with has been in the process of moving equipment from one datacenter to another. Ten days ago we moved one of our name servers authoritative for our client's domains (ns1.faithhiway.com) and updated its IP address with its respective DNS provider (register.com) to point to the new datacenter. All tests done show that this name server is correctly running at its new location and when queried, returning the correct response for any domains it is responsible for. The problem is that well after 72 hours had gone by we were still seeing more DNS activity at its old IP address than at the new. The good news is that we kept a name server responding on the old IP address for the time being so we are not seeing any issues with the domains our nameserver is responsible for but the goal is to retire that as soon as possible. As you can see from WhatsMyDNS.net, a decent amount of propagation has occurred over the last 10 days since we made this change, but still there are some locations reporting our original IP. Considering that the TTL is only 3600 with the name servers responsible for this domain, it does not make any sense to myself or the other engineers working with me that we are having this issue. But a few (OpenDNS and SpeakEasy in the examples above) are still showing the old IP address. Considering the length of time that has gone by, it seems obvious to me that either we have made a mistake and not thoroughly handled the DNS changes on our end (likely) or there is a problem with either the DNS provider for this domain (Register) or with some of the DNS servers out in the wild (rather unlikely). Any advice on how I can proceed with this? UPDATE (January 31, 2011): First of all, I apologize for the length of both the original question and this update. I contemplated removing some of the excess from the original post but just in case this problem and its solution are helpful to someone else in the future I'm just going to leave everything as it is. Anyway, I've been doing some more research into this problem, and have discovered the following interesting occurrence. While running a check on the glue records for faithhiway.com always resolve correctly, if I go and check a client domain (where ns1.faithhiway.com is authoritative), I get a strange response. It looks like the root servers are returning nsX.faithhiway.com as their old IP addresses still (under Additional Section). Because we have a server still there responding to DNS queries, the trace finishes and returns the correct IP addresses as the final step (again, under Additional Section). The data might be near hundred columns (few years), and some of the months need to be omitted. Any expert able to help on this? I had been spending whole day cracking my head on this. Worse come to worse I might have to manually copy and paste, that would probably took me a decade.

    Hi, Im learning rails and exploring a bit away from the book and creating a simple application with added functionality as i increase my knowledge. Im writing a simple blog application and i have a field in the form called date added, i don't want this to be a field i want it to get the date from the server and place it in to the database automatically. How would i go about doing this? I was thinking of a hidden field but then unsure on how to process the date and insert it to the hidden field. Is this the wrong way of going about things?     I'm creating a Jasper report that includes the following parameters: DATESTART (Date) DATEEND (Date) These parameters indicate a date range for a field called DATECREATED (Timestamp) which includes times. I would like the date range to be INCLUSIVE, that is, if I filter for "Jan 1, 2009" to "Jan 31, 2009", any DATECREATED value on Jan 31, 2009 (such as "Jan 31, 2009 15:00") will be included in the report. When I used Crystal Reports in the past, I used the DATEADD function to create a filter expression like the following: {DATECREATED} >= {DATESTART} and {DATECREATED} < DATEADD("d", 1, {DATEEND}) (I realize that this isn't syntactically correct, but you get the idea.) Is there any way to do something similar in Jasper Reports?

    Hi, I am trying to set default value in DateField using the following statement DateField dateField = new DateField("Birthday:", 567993600, DateField.DATE | DateField.FIELD_LEFT); but when I run my application it shows me 7 Jan 1970 instead of 1 Jan 1988. I checked the time stamp on http://www.onlineconversion.com/unix_time.htm and it shows me correct expected date which is, "Fri, 01 Jan 1988 00:00:00 GMT" I am using 8900 simulator and my date time is correct showing today's date 31 Dec 2010 in date time under options folder.
