  • Repaint() not calling paint() in Java

    - by Joshua Auriemma
    Let me start off by saying I know I've violated some basic Java principles in this messy code, but I'm desperately trying to finish a program by Tuesday for a social science experiment, and I don't know Java, so I'm basically just fumbling through it for now. With that disclaimer out of the way, I have a separate program working where a circle is moving around the screen and the user must click on it. It works fine when its in its own separate class file, but when I add the code to my main program, it's no longer working. I don't even really understand why repaint() calls my paint() function — as far as I'm concerned, it's magic, but I've noticed that repaint() calls paint() in my test program, but not in the more complicated actual program, and I assume that's why the circle is no longer painting on my program. Entire code is below: import java.awt.Color; import java.awt.Graphics; import java.awt.Graphics2D; import java.awt.Rectangle; import javax.swing.*; import java.awt.event.*; import java.awt.geom.Ellipse2D; import java.io.FileReader; import java.io.IOException; import java.util.Calendar; public class Reflexology1 extends JFrame{ private static final long serialVersionUID = -1295261024563143679L; private Ellipse2D ball = new Ellipse2D.Double(0, 0, 25, 25); private Timer moveBallTimer; int _ballXpos, _ballYpos; JButton button1, button2; JButton movingButton; JTextArea textArea1; int buttonAClicked, buttonDClicked; private long _openTime = 0; private long _closeTime = 0; JPanel thePanel = new JPanel(); JPanel thePlacebo = new JPanel(); final JFrame frame = new JFrame("Reflexology"); final JFrame frame2 = new JFrame("The Test"); JLabel label1 = new JLabel("Press X and then click the moving dot as fast as you can."); public static void main(String[] args){ new Reflexology1(); } public Reflexology1(){ frame.setSize(600, 475); frame.setLocationRelativeTo(null); frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); frame.setTitle("Reflexology 1.0"); frame.setResizable(false); frame2.setSize(600, 475); frame2.setLocationRelativeTo(null); frame2.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); frame2.setTitle("Reflexology 1.0"); frame2.setResizable(false); button1 = new JButton("Accept"); button2 = new JButton("Decline"); //movingButton = new JButton("Click Me"); ListenForAcceptButton lForAButton = new ListenForAcceptButton(); ListenForDeclineButton lForDButton = new ListenForDeclineButton(); button1.addActionListener(lForAButton); button2.addActionListener(lForDButton); //movingButton.addActionListener(lForMButton); JTextArea textArea1 = new JTextArea(24, 50); textArea1.setText("Tracking Events\n"); textArea1.setLineWrap(true); textArea1.setWrapStyleWord(true); textArea1.setSize(15, 50); textArea1.setEditable(false); FileReader reader = null; try { reader = new FileReader("EULA.txt"); textArea1.read(reader, "EULA.txt"); } catch (IOException exception) { System.err.println("Problem loading file"); exception.printStackTrace(); } finally { if (reader != null) { try { reader.close(); } catch (IOException exception) { System.err.println("Error closing reader"); exception.printStackTrace(); } } } JScrollPane scrollBar1 = new JScrollPane(textArea1, JScrollPane.VERTICAL_SCROLLBAR_AS_NEEDED, JScrollPane.HORIZONTAL_SCROLLBAR_NEVER); AdjustmentListener listener = new MyAdjustmentListener(); thePanel.add(scrollBar1); thePanel.add(button1); thePanel.add(button2); frame.add(thePanel); ListenForMouse lForMouse = new ListenForMouse(); thePlacebo.addMouseListener(lForMouse); thePlacebo.add(label1); frame2.add(thePlacebo); ListenForWindow lForWindow = new ListenForWindow(); frame.addWindowListener(lForWindow); frame2.addKeyListener(new KeyAdapter() { public void keyPressed(KeyEvent e){ if(e.getKeyChar() == 'X' || e.getKeyChar() == 'x') {moveBallTimer.start();} } }); frame.setVisible(true); moveBallTimer = new Timer(1000, new ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { moveBall(); System.out.println("Timer started!"); repaint(); } }); addKeyListener(new KeyAdapter() { public void keyPressed(KeyEvent e) { if(frame2.isVisible()){ moveBallTimer.start(); } } }); } private class ListenForAcceptButton implements ActionListener{ public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e){ if (e.getSource() == button1){ Calendar ClCDateTime = Calendar.getInstance(); System.out.println(ClCDateTime.getTimeInMillis() - _openTime); _closeTime = ClCDateTime.getTimeInMillis() - _openTime; //frame.getContentPane().remove(thePanel); //thePlacebo.addKeyListener(lForKeys); //frame.getContentPane().add(thePlacebo); //frame.repaint(); //moveBallTimer.start(); frame.setVisible(false); frame2.setVisible(true); frame2.revalidate(); frame2.repaint(); } } } private class ListenForDeclineButton implements ActionListener{ public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e){ if (e.getSource() == button2){ JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(Reflexology1.this, "You've declined the license agreement.   • JProgressBar.stringPainted(true); is not working

    - by Mirza Ghalib
    This is a part of my java code, in this code I have written that when I click the button the value of JProgressBar should becomes 0 and stringPainted(); becomes true, but "string painted" is not visible when I click the button, please help. import java.awt.Color; import java.awt.Dimension; import java.awt.FlowLayout; import java.awt.Graphics; import java.awt.event.ActionEvent; import java.awt.event.ActionListener; import javax.swing.JButton; import javax.swing.JFrame; import javax.swing.JProgressBar; public class R implements ActionListener { static int y; CustomProgressBar b = new CustomProgressBar(); public static void main(String arg[]) throws Exception { new R(); } public R() throws Exception { JFrame f = new JFrame(); JButton btn = new JButton("Click"); f.setExtendedState(JFrame.MAXIMIZED_BOTH); f.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); f.setUndecorated(true); f.setLayout(new FlowLayout()); btn.addActionListener(this); f.add(b); f.add(btn); f.setVisible(true); } class CustomProgressBar extends JProgressBar{ private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L; private boolean isStringToBePainted = false; public CustomProgressBar() { super(JProgressBar.VERTICAL,0,100); } @Override protected void paintComponent(Graphics g) { super.paintComponent(g); if(isStringToBePainted ) { Dimension size = CustomProgressBar.this.getSize(); if( CustomProgressBar.this.getPercentComplete()<0.9 ) R.y = (int)( size.height - size.height * CustomProgressBar.this.getPercentComplete() ); String text = getString(); g.setColor(Color.BLACK ); g.drawString(text, 0, R.y); } } @Override public void setStringPainted(boolean b) { isStringToBePainted=b; } } @Override public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { b.setValue(0); b.setStringPainted(true); } }

  • How can I create or assign a method to temp (WindowAdapter)?

    - by Doug Hauf
    I want to create an instance of the WindowAdapter and put my method for windowClosing in it and then sent the temp into the f.addWindowListener(temp) can this be done. Java will not let me create an instance of WindowAdapter like below. WindowAdapter temp = new WindowAdapter(); <-- Does not compile How could this be done? Code: public static void main(String args[]) { setLookFeel(); JFrame f = new JFrame("Hello World Printer..."); WindowAdapter temp; f.addWindowListener(new WindowAdapter() { public void windowClosing(WindowEvent e) { System.exit(0); } }); JButton printButton = new JButton("Print Hello World"); printButton.addActionListener(new HelloWorldPrinter()); f.add("Center", printButton); f.pack(); f.setVisible(true); }

  • What if I made an explicit reference to 'this' for use inside an inner class?

    - by badp
    So far, I've used this approach to access this from the scope of an inner class: class FooManagementWindow extends JFrame { JButton rejectFoo; //... void getFooAcceptingPanel(){ //... final FooManagementWindow referenceToThis = this; rejectFoo = new JButton("Reject"); rejectFoo.addEventListener(new EventListener() { @Override public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent arg) { referenceToThis.setEnabled(false); //this requires a network call //... referenceToThis.setEnabled(true); //the user may resume his work } }); //... } } However, I just learned that instead of declaring referenceToThis, a direct reference is kept for me as: FooManagementWindow.this I have no reason to think my less standard approach may lead to errors or weird corner cases. Or are there?

  • java nested for() loop throws ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException

    - by Mike
    I'm working through a JPanel exercise in a Java book. I'm tasked with creating a 5x4 grid using GridLayout. When I loop through the container to add panels and buttons, the first add() throws the OOB exception. What am I doing wrong? package mineField; import java.awt.*; import javax.swing.*; @SuppressWarnings("serial") public class MineField extends JFrame { private final int WIDTH = 250; private final int HEIGHT = 120; private final int MAX_ROWS = 5; private final int MAX_COLUMNS = 4; public MineField() { super("Minefield"); setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); Container mineFieldGrid = getContentPane(); mineFieldGrid.setLayout(new GridLayout(MAX_ROWS, MAX_COLUMNS)); // loop through arrays, add panels, then add buttons to panels. for (int i = 0; i < MAX_ROWS; i++) { JPanel[] rows = new JPanel[i]; mineFieldGrid.add(rows[i], rows[i].getName()); rows[i].setBackground(Color.blue); for (int j = 0; j < MAX_COLUMNS; j++) { JButton[] buttons = new JButton[i]; rows[i].add(buttons[j], buttons[j].getName()); } } mineFieldGrid.setSize(WIDTH, HEIGHT); mineFieldGrid.setVisible(true); } public int setRandomBomb(Container con) { int bombID; bombID = (int) (Math.random() * con.getComponentCount()); return bombID; } /** * @param args */ public static void main(String[] args) { //int randomBomb; //JButton bombLocation; MineField minePanel = new MineField(); //minePanel[randomBomb] = minePanel.setRandomBomb(minePanel); } } I'm sure I'm over-engineering a simple nested for loop. Since I'm new to Java, please be kind. I'm sure I'll return the favor some day.

  • Painting component inside another component

    - by mike_hornbeck
    I've got a task to display painted 'eyes' with menu buttons to change their colors, and background color. Next animate them. But currently I'm stuck at painting, sinc in my JFrame I've Created JPanel containing panels with drawn eyes and buttons. Buttons are rendered properly but my eyes canvas is not shown. I've tried changing paint to paintComponent, setting contentPane differently but still nothing works. import java.awt.*; import javax.swing.*; public class Main extends JFrame { public static void main(String[] args) { final JFrame frame = new JFrame("Eyes"); frame.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(600, 450)); frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); JPanel players = new JPanel(new GridLayout(1, 3)); players.add(new JButton("Eyes color")); players.add(new JButton("Eye pupil")); players.add(new JButton("Background color")); JPanel eyes = new JPanel(); Eyes e = new Eyes(); eyes.add(e); eyes.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(600, 400)); JPanel content = new JPanel(); content.setLayout(new BoxLayout(content, BoxLayout.Y_AXIS)); frame.setContentPane(content); content.add(players); content.add(eyes); // frame.getContentPane().add(content); frame.pack(); frame.setVisible(true); } } class Eyes extends JPanel { public Eyes(){ } public void paint(Graphics g) { super.paintComponent(g); Graphics2D g2d = (Graphics2D) g; g2d.setRenderingHint(RenderingHints.KEY_ANTIALIASING,RenderingHints.VALUE_ANTIALIAS_ON); BasicStroke bs = new BasicStroke(3.0f); g2d.setBackground(Color.green); g2d.setStroke(bs); g2d.setColor(Color.yellow); g2d.fillOval(50, 150, 200, 200); g2d.fillOval( 350, 150, 200, 200); g2d.setColor(Color.BLACK); g2d.drawOval(49, 149, 201, 201); g2d.drawOval(349, 149, 201, 201); g2d.fillOval(125, 225, 50, 50); g2d.fillOval(425, 225, 50, 50); } } This is what I should get : This is what I have : When I've tried painting it directly in JFrame it works almost perfect, apart of background not being set. Why setBackgroundColor doesn't influence my drawing in any way ?

  • Constructors in Inner classes (implementing Interfaces)

    - by thepandaatemyface
    Hi, How would I go about writing a constructor for an inner class which is implementing an interface? I know I could make a whole new class, but I figure there's got to be a way to do something along the line of this: JButton b = new JButton(new AbstractAction() { public AbstractAction() { super("This is a button"); } public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { System.out.println("button clicked"); } }); When I enter this it doesn't recognize the AbstractAction method as a constructor (compiler asks for return type). Anyone have an idea? Thanks

  • Outer class jframe is not hiding when calling the inner class jframe

    - by user2909960
    When i am calling the inner jframe, it is called, but outer jframe is not hiding. instead it gets overlapped. so what will be the solution for this. Is there any way to get out of this. As i tried when i am calling the inner class frame, the outer class frame is also called, and it is not hidden. package com.exp.example; import java.awt.Color; import java.awt.Container; import java.awt.event.ActionEvent; import java.awt.event.ActionListener; import javax.swing.JButton; import javax.swing.JFrame; import javax.swing.JLabel; import javax.swing.JTextField; @SuppressWarnings("serial") public class A extends JFrame implements ActionListener { JFrame rframe = new JFrame(); JLabel CFirstName; JTextField Cfname; JButton jbsubmit; Container cp; public A() { rframe.setSize(500, 200); rframe.setLocationRelativeTo(null); cp = getContentPane(); cp.setLayout(null); setSize(550, 300); rframe.setTitle("Outer Frame"); cp.setBackground(new Color(140, 180, 180)); CFirstName = new JLabel("First Name"); Cfname = new JTextField(10); jbsubmit = new JButton("PREVIEW"); CFirstName.setBounds(10, 20, 100, 35); Cfname.setBounds(150, 20, 150, 25); jbsubmit.setBounds(190, 110, 92, 25); cp.add(CFirstName); cp.add(Cfname); cp.add(jbsubmit); jbsubmit.addActionListener(this); rframe.add(cp); rframe.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); rframe.setVisible(true); } public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent ae) { String action = ae.getActionCommand(); if (action == "PREVIEW") { /* Write the code here * When we click on preview button the frame of outer class(class A) gets * deactivated(closed) and inner frame, frame of inner class(class B) gets visible. * it should not be overlapped. */ /* My Code */ new B(); rframe.setVisible(false); } } public class B { JFrame frm = new JFrame(); Container cp; public B() { frm.setSize(500, 200); frm.setLocationRelativeTo(null); cp = getContentPane(); cp.setLayout(null); setSize(550, 300); frm.setTitle("Inner Frame"); cp.setBackground(new Color(140, 180, 180)); JLabel cpn = new JLabel("hello"); cpn.setBounds(10, 20, 100, 35); cp.add(cpn); frm.add(cp); frm.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); frm.setVisible(true); } } public static void main(String[] args) { new A(); } }

  • -Java- Swing GUI - Moving around components specifically with layouts

    - by Xemiru Scarlet Sanzenin
    I'm making a little test GUI for something I'm making. However, problems occur with the positioning of the panels. public winInit() { super("Chatterbox - Login"); try { UIManager.setLookAndFeel(UIManager.getSystemLookAndFeelClassName()); } catch(ClassNotFoundException e) { } catch (InstantiationException e) { } catch (IllegalAccessException e) { } catch (UnsupportedLookAndFeelException e) { } setSize(300,135); pn1 = new JPanel(); pn2 = new JPanel(); pn3 = new JPanel(); l1 = new JLabel("Username"); l2 = new JLabel("Password"); l3 = new JLabel("Random text here"); l4 = new JLabel("Server Address"); l5 = new JLabel("No address set."); i1 = new JTextField(10); p1 = new JPasswordField(10); b1 = new JButton("Connect"); b2 = new JButton("Register"); b3 = new JButton("Set IP"); l4.setBounds(10, 12, getDim(l4).width, getDim(l4).height); l1.setBounds(10, 35, getDim(l1).width, getDim(l1).height); l2.setBounds(10, 60, getDim(l2).width, getDim(l2).height); l3.setBounds(10, 85, getDim(l3).width, getDim(l3).height); l5.setBounds(l4.getBounds().width + 14, 12, l5.getPreferredSize().width, l5.getPreferredSize().height); l5.setForeground(Color.gray); i1.setBounds(getDim(l1).width + 15, 35, getDim(i1).width, getDim(i1).height); p1.setBounds(getDim(l1).width + 15, 60, getDim(p1).width, getDim(p1).height); b1.setBounds(getDim(l1).width + getDim(i1).width + 23, 34, getDim(b2).width, getDim(b1).height - 5); b2.setBounds(getDim(l1).width + getDim(i1).width + 23, 60, getDim(b2).width, getDim(b2).height - 5); b3.setBounds(getDim(l1).width + getDim(i1).width + 23, 10, etDim(b2).width, getDim(b3).height - 5); b1.addActionListener(clickButton); b2.addActionListener(clickButton); b3.addActionListener(clickButton); pn1.setLayout(new FlowLayout(FlowLayout.RIGHT)); pn2.setLayout(new FlowLayout(FlowLayout.RIGHT)); pn1.add(l1); pn1.add(i1); pn1.add(b1); pn2.add(l2); pn2.add(p1); pn2.add(b2); add(pn1); add(pn2); } I am attempting to use FlowLayout to position the panels in the way desired. I'd use BorderLayout while adding, but the vertical spacing is too far away when I just use directions closest to one another. The output of this code is to create a window, 300,150, place whatever's in the two panels in the exact same spaces. Yes, I realize there's useless code there with setBounds(), but that was just me screwing around with Absolute Positioning, which wasn't working out for me either.

  • How do I get my character to move after adding to JFrame?

    - by A.K.
    So this is kind of a follow up on my other JPanel question that got resolved by playing around with the Layout... Now my MouseListener allows me to add a new Board(); object from its class, which is the actual game map and animator itself. But since my Board() takes Key Events from a Player Object inside the Board Class, I'm not sure if they are being started. Here's my Frame Class, where SideScroller S is the player object: package OurPackage; //Made By A.K. 5/24/12 //Contains Frame. import java.awt.BorderLayout; import java.awt.Button; import java.awt.CardLayout; import java.awt.Color; import java.awt.Container; import java.awt.Dimension; import java.awt.Graphics; import java.awt.Graphics2D; import java.awt.GridBagLayout; import java.awt.GridLayout; import java.awt.Image; import java.awt.Rectangle; import java.awt.event.ActionEvent; import java.awt.event.ActionListener; import java.awt.event.KeyEvent; import java.awt.event.MouseAdapter; import java.awt.event.MouseEvent; import java.awt.event.MouseListener; import javax.swing.*; import javax.swing.plaf.basic.BasicOptionPaneUI.ButtonActionListener; public class Frame implements MouseListener { public static boolean StartGame = false; JFrame frm = new JFrame("Action-Packed Jack"); ImageIcon img = new ImageIcon(getClass().getResource("/Images/ActionJackTitle.png")); ImageIcon StartImg = new ImageIcon(getClass().getResource("/Images/JackStart.png")); public Image Title; JLabel TitleL = new JLabel(img); public JPanel TitlePane = new JPanel(); public JPanel BoardPane = new JPanel(); JPanel cards; JButton StartB = new JButton(StartImg); Board nBoard = new Board(); static Sound nSound; public Frame() { frm.setLayout(new GridBagLayout()); cards = new JPanel(new CardLayout()); nSound = new Sound("/Sounds/BunchaJazz.wav"); TitleL.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(970, 420)); frm.add(TitleL); frm.add(cards); cards.setSize(new Dimension(150, 45)); cards.setLayout(new GridBagLayout ()); cards.add(StartB); StartB.addMouseListener(this); StartB.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(150, 45)); frm.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); frm.setSize(1200, 420); frm.setVisible(true); frm.setResizable(false); frm.setLocationRelativeTo(null); frm.pack(); } public static void main(String[] args) { SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() { public void run() { new Frame(); } }); } public void mouseClicked(MouseEvent e) { nSound.play(); StartB.setContentAreaFilled(false); cards.remove(StartB); frm.remove(TitleL); frm.remove(cards); frm.setLayout(new GridLayout(1, 1)); frm.add(nBoard); //Add Game "Tiles" Or Content. x = 1200 nBoard.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(1200, 420)); cards.revalidate(); frm.validate(); } @Override public void mouseEntered(MouseEvent arg0) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub } @Override public void mouseExited(MouseEvent arg0) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub } @Override public void mousePressed(MouseEvent arg0) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub } @Override public void mouseReleased(MouseEvent arg0) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub } }

  • Can't remove JPanel from JFrame while adding new class into it

    - by A.K.
    Basically, I have my Frame class, which instantiates all the properties for the JFrame, and draws a JLabel with an image (my title screen). Then I made a separate JPanel with a start button on it, and made a mouse listener that will allow me to remove these objects while adding in a new Board() class (Which paints the main game). *Note: The JLabel is SEPARATE from the JPanel, but it still gets moved to the side by it. Problem: Whenever I click the button though, it only shows a little square of what I presume is my board class trying to run. Code below for the Frame Class: package OurPackage; //Made By A.K. 5/24/12 //Contains Frame. import java.awt.BorderLayout; import java.awt.Color; import java.awt.Container; import java.awt.Dimension; import java.awt.Graphics; import java.awt.Graphics2D; import java.awt.GridBagLayout; import java.awt.GridLayout; import java.awt.Image; import java.awt.Rectangle; import java.awt.event.ActionEvent; import java.awt.event.ActionListener; import java.awt.event.KeyEvent; import java.awt.event.MouseAdapter; import java.awt.event.MouseEvent; import java.awt.event.MouseListener; import javax.swing.*; import javax.swing.plaf.basic.BasicOptionPaneUI.ButtonActionListener; public class Frame implements MouseListener { public static boolean StartGame = false; ImageIcon img = new ImageIcon(getClass().getResource("/Images/ActionJackTitle.png")); ImageIcon StartImg = new ImageIcon(getClass().getResource("/Images/JackStart.png")); public Image Title; JLabel TitleL = new JLabel(img); public JPanel panel = new JPanel(); JButton StartB = new JButton(StartImg); JFrame frm = new JFrame("Action-Packed Jack"); public Frame() { TitleL.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(1200, 420)); frm.add(TitleL); frm.setLayout(new GridBagLayout()); frm.add(panel); panel.setSize(new Dimension(220, 45)); panel.setLayout(new GridBagLayout ()); panel.add(StartB); StartB.addMouseListener(this); StartB.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(220, 45)); frm.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); frm.setSize(1200, 420); frm.setVisible(true); frm.setResizable(false); frm.setLocationRelativeTo(null); } public static void main(String[] args) { new Frame(); } public void mouseClicked(MouseEvent e) { StartB.setContentAreaFilled(false); panel.remove(StartB); frm.remove(panel); frm.remove(TitleL); //frm.setLayout(null); frm.add(new Board()); //Add Game "Tiles" Or Content. x = 1200 frm.validate(); System.out.println("Hit!"); } @Override public void mouseEntered(MouseEvent arg0) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub } @Override public void mouseExited(MouseEvent arg0) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub } @Override public void mousePressed(MouseEvent arg0) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub } @Override public void mouseReleased(MouseEvent arg0) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub } }

  • Making a app show inside a GUI in Java

    - by José
    Hello. I have one problem I've been dealing with for this week. You see, I'm new to Java, so that's probably it... Anyways, I've started a project out of pure curiosity. I had it done in Java, but in plain CMD-style, which is not very pretty. It calls one of my ten programs, chosen by the user using "Case". Eg.: If you type 1, it will go to program 1. After you finish it, it goes back to selection until the user press 0. After that, I've been trying to make a GUI for it. I've been able to create the selector alone and make it respond to the numbers chosen. If you press 1 and click ok, it will tell you you've chosen program 1. I, however, have not been able to make it run the program. I've been trying to make the program show up in a jPanel, part of the main GUI. I failed miserably. The program runs in separate but I can't make them run together like the CMD one. The apps were made in Eclipse SDK 3.5.2 The GUIs were made in Netbeans IDE 6.8 Here's the code for the GUI only (the prints are in PT-BR, my native language): Main program: /* * To change this template, choose Tools | Templates * and open the template in the editor. */ /* * ProgramasGUI.java * * Created on 31/01/2010, 22:56:19 */ package Main; import Main.Prog1; /** * * @author Zeh® */ public class ProgramasGUI extends javax.swing.JFrame { /** Creates new form ProgramasGUI */ public ProgramasGUI() { initComponents(); } /** This method is called from within the constructor to * initialize the form. * WARNING: Do NOT modify this code. • problem with revalidating a jframe.

    - by John Quesie
    I have this code which should take the radio button input do a little math and display a popup. which it does fine. but then it is supposed to re validate and ask the next question. when i get to the second question, the answer always comes out as the isSelected(true) value no matter which radio button you click on. SO to be clear the first time through it works fin but when the second question comes up, it just takes the default radio button every time. public class EventHandler implements ActionListener { private Main gui; • Java: does the EDT restart or not when an exception is thrown?

    - by NoozNooz42
    (the example code below is self-contained and runnable, you can try it, it won't crash your system :) Tom Hawtin commented on the question here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3018165 that: It's unlikely that the EDT would crash. Unchecked exceptions thrown in EDT dispatch are caught, dumped and the thread goes on. Can someone explain me what is going on here (every time you click on the "throw an unchecked exception" button, a divide by zero is performed, on purpose): import javax.swing.*; import java.awt.event.ActionEvent; import java.awt.event.ActionListener; import java.awt.event.WindowAdapter; import java.awt.event.WindowEvent; public class CrashEDT extends JFrame { public static void main(String[] args) { final CrashEDT frame = new CrashEDT(); frame.addWindowListener(new WindowAdapter() { public void windowClosing( WindowEvent e) { System.exit(0); } }); final JButton jb = new JButton( "throw an unchecked exception" ); jb.addActionListener( new ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed( ActionEvent e ) { System.out.println( "Thread ID:" + Thread.currentThread().getId() ); System.out.println( 0 / Math.abs(0) ); } } ); frame.add( jb ); frame.setSize(300, 150); frame.setVisible(true); } } I get the following message (which is what I'd expect): Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.ArithmeticException: / by zero and to me this is an unchecked exception right? You can see that the thread ID is getting incremented every time you trigger the crash. So is the EDT automatically restarted every time an unchecked exception is thrown or are unchecked exceptions "caught, dumped and the thread goes on" like Tom Hawtin commented? What is going on here?

  • Retrieve input entered in a JDialog

    - by Jules Olléon
    I extended JDialog to create a custom dialog where the user must fill some fields : How should I retrieve the data entered ? I came up with a solution that works. It mimics JOptionPane but the way I do it looks ugly to me because of the static fields involved... Here is roughly my code : public class FObjectDialog extends JDialog implements ActionListener { private static String name; private static String text; private JTextField fName; private JTextArea fText; private JButton bAdd; private JButton bCancel; private FObjectDialog(Frame parentFrame) { super(parentFrame,"Add an object",true); // build the whole dialog buildNewObjectDialog(); setVisible(true); } @Override public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent ae) { if(ae.getSource()==bAdd){ name=fName.getText(); text=fText.getText(); } else { name=null; text=null; } setVisible(false); dispose(); } public static String[] showCreateDialog(Frame parentFrame){ new FObjectDialog(parentFrame); String[] res={name,text}; if((name==null)||(text==null)) res=null; return res; } } As I said, that works properly, but I guess that might raise serious concurrency issues... Is there a cleaner way to do that ? How is it done in JOptionPane ?

  • Counting the number of words in a text area

  • Best Practice With JFrame Constructors?

    - by David Barry
    In both my Java classes, and the books we used in them laying out a GUI with code heavily involved the constructor of the JFrame. The standard technique in the books seems to be to initialize all components and add them to the JFrame in the constructor, and add anonymous event handlers to handle events where needed, and this is what has been advocated in my class. This seems to be pretty easy to understand, and easy to work with when creating a very simple GUI, but seems to quickly get ugly and cumbersome when making anything other than a very simple gui. Here is a small code sample of what I'm describing: public class FooFrame extends JFrame { JLabel inputLabel; JTextField inputField; JButton fooBtn; JPanel fooPanel; public FooFrame() { super("Foo"); fooPanel = new JPanel(); fooPanel.setLayout(new FlowLayout()); inputLabel = new JLabel("Input stuff"); fooPanel.add(inputLabel); inputField = new JTextField(20); fooPanel.add(inputField); fooBtn = new JButton("Do Foo"); fooBtn.addActionListener(new ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { //handle event } }); fooPanel.add(fooBtn); add(fooPanel, BorderLayout.CENTER); } } Is this type of use of the constructor the best way to code a Swing application in java? If so, what techniques can I use to make sure this type of constructor is organized and maintainable? If not, what is the recommended way to approach putting together a JFrame in java?

  • Why I do not see a static variable in a loop?

    - by Roman
    I have a static method which sets a variable: static String[] playersNames; public static void setParameters(String[] players) { playersNames = players; } Then I have a static block: static { JRadioButton option; ButtonGroup group = new ButtonGroup(); // Wright a short explanation of what the user should do. partnerSelectionPanel.add(new JLabel("Pleas select a partner:")); // Generate radio-buttons corresponding to the options available to the player. // Bellow is the problematic line causing the null pointer exception: for (String playerName: playersNames) { final String pn = playerName; option = new JRadioButton(playerName, false); option.addActionListener(new ActionListener(){ @Override public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent evt) { partner = pn; } }); partnerSelectionPanel.add(option); group.add(option); } partnerSelectionPanel.add(label); // Add the "Submit" button to the end of the "form". JButton submitButton = new JButton("Submit"); submitButton.addActionListener(new ActionListener(){ @Override public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent evt) { partnerSelected(); } }); partnerSelectionPanel.add(submitButton); } Compiler does not complain about anything but when I try to execute the code I get problems. In this place SelectPartnerGUI.setParameters(players); I have: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ExceptionInitializerError. and it is cause by java.lang.NullpointerException at this place for (String playerName: playersNames). Does my program do not see the palyersNames?

  • Default Button after dispose and setVisible

    - by DaDaDom
    Hi, given the following code: public class DialogTest implements ActionListener { public static void main(String[] args) {DialogTest g = new DialogTest();} public DialogTest() { JButton b1 = new JButton("Button A"); b1.addActionListener(this); JDialog d = new JDialog(); d.setDefaultCloseOperation(JDialog.DISPOSE_ON_CLOSE); JPanel p = new JPanel(); p.add(b1); d.add(p); d.getRootPane().setDefaultButton(b1); d.pack(); d.setVisible(true); d.dispose(); d.pack(); d.setVisible(true); } public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {System.out.println("hello");} } Shouldn't pressing the Enter key write something to the console? According to the docs (http://java.sun.com/javase/7/docs/api/java/awt/Window.html#dispose()): The Window and its subcomponents can be made displayable again by rebuilding the native resources with a subsequent call to pack or show. The states of the recreated Window and its subcomponents will be identical to the states of these objects at the point where the Window was disposed Is this intended behaviour?
