  • Book Review: Optimizing Windows 7 Pocket Consultant

It is essential to optimize Windows 7 in order to make use of the features to its full potential. However, it is difficult to find and locate the various elements which require optimization. In this review, Anand examines the contents of Optimizing Windows 7 Pocket Consultant book authored by William Stanek. After reading the review, you will be in a position to judge whether the book will be suitable for you or not.

  • What research topics can I tackle with only a year of experience?

    - by rapidash
I've been looking to get into research, but I'm not sure I can do when I've only taken two quarters of Computer Science. I go to the University of Washington, if it's relevant. This is a page on research. I find that I'm not able to judge what is possible for a first year looking through the website. Most things look intimidating, but I'm sure I could somewhere on some problem if I actually attacked it.

  • Should debug code be left in place, always, or added only when debugging and removed when the bug has been found?

    - by gablin
I, for one, only add debug code (such as print statements) when I'm trying to locate a bug. And once I've found it, I remove the debug code (and add a test case which specifically tests for that bug). I feel that it's cluttering the real code and therefore has no place there unless I'm debugging. How do you do it? Do you leave the debug code in place, or remove it when obsolete (which may be difficult to judge when that is)?

  • Is IronScheme complete enough or stable enough to be worth learning?

    - by World Engineer
IronScheme is mentioned on Wikipedia as a successor to a failed project called IronLisp, bringing Lisp to CLR and .NET, the way Clojure does for the JVM. Does anyone have experience with this language? It looks fairly complete (99%) but I'm not sure how to judge whether it's worth my time to fiddle with getting it set up or not. By stable or complete, I mean using it for actual projects rather than just fiddling with tools and Project Euler style problems.

  • IOUC Summit: Open Arms and Cheese Shoes

    - by Justin Kestelyn
Last week's International Oracle User Group Committee (IOUC) Summit at Oracle HQ was a high point of the past year, for a number of reasons: A "quorum" of Java User Group leaders, several Java Champions among them, were in attendance (Bert Breeman, Stephan Janssen, Dan Sline, Stephen Chin, Bruno Souza, Van Riper, and others), and it was great to get face time with them. Their guidance and advice about JavaOne and other things are always much appreciated. Mix in some Oracle ACE Directors (Debra Lilley, Dan Morgan, Sten Vesterli, and others), and you really have the making of a dynamic group. Stephan describes it best: "We (the JUG Leaders) discovered that behind the more formal dress code the ACE directors are actually as crazy as we are." (See link below for more.) Thanks to Bert's (NLJug) kindness, I am now the proud owner of a bonafide, straight-from-the-NL cheese shoe. How the heck did he get this through security? I suggest that you also read more robust reports from Stephan, Arun Gupta, and of course "Team Stanley."

  • To be or not to be: a solutions architech [closed]

    - by jQwierdy
short version: as a student taking a summer internship, whats more useful for later in my career, taking a job as a solutions Architect, or a software engineer? Long version: I'm a CS major in my 3rd year, I've interviewed with some of the big companies and did not get job offers year (Morgan Stanley, Microsoft, FacebooK) but did receive offers from a startup. I actually got two offers from the same start up. I really like the startup and despite the (much) lower wage at it compared to a bigger company, I could do solutions architecture. Solutions architects (I think) work more on figuring out high level solutions directly for clients, so I'd be working often with a sales team and developers. Everyone knows what (generally) a software engineer does. And so my question is this: for my career, what would be more beneficial to a) know how to do, and b) have on my resume.

  • Duplicate DNS Zones (Error 4515 in Event Log )

    - by Campo
I am getting these two error in the DNS Event log (errors at end of question). I have confirmed I do have duplicate zones. I am wondering which ones to delete. The DomainDNSZone contains all of our DNS records but it does not have the _msdcs zone.... that is in the ForestDNSZone with the duplicates that are not in use. here is a picture of that 3 Questions. I understand the advantages of having DNS in the ForestDNSZone. so... Why is DNS using the DomainDNSZone and is that acceptable considering _msdcs... is in the ForestDNSZone? If so, should I just delete the DC=1.168.192.in-addr.arpa and DC=supernova.local from the ForestDNSZone? Or should I try to get those to be the ones in use? What are those steps? I understand how to delete. That is simple but if i must move zones some info would be appreaciated there. Just to confirm. from my understanding. I can delete the two duplicates in the ForestDNSZone and leave the _msdcs.supernova.local as thats required there. This will resolve the erros I see. Just fyi when I look in those folders from the ForestDNSZone they have just 2 and 1 entries respectively. So obviously not in use compared to the others. I am pretty sure I understand the steps to complete this. But if you would like to provide that info, bonus points! If an administrator has moved this zone from one directory partition to another this may be a harmless transient condition. In this case, no action is necessary. • An alternative to reading input from Java's System.in

    - by dvanaria
I’m working on the UVa Online Judge problem set archive as a way to practice Java, and as a way to practice data structures and algorithms in general. They give an example input file to submit to the online judge to use as a starting point (it’s the solution to problem 100). Input from the standard input stream (java.lang.System.in) is required as part of any solution on this site, but I can’t understand the implementation of reading from System.in they give in their example solution. It’s true that the input file could consist of any variation of integers, strings, etc, but every solution program requires reading basic lines of text input from System.in, one line at a time. There has to be a better (simpler and more robust) method of gathering data from the standard input stream in Java than this: public static String readLn(int maxLg) { byte lin[] = new byte[maxLg]; int lg = 0, car = -1; String line = “”; try { while (lg < maxLg) { car = System.in.read(); if ((car < 0) || (car == ‘\n’)) { break; } lin[lg++] += car; } } catch (java.io.IOException e) { return (null); } if ((car < 0) && (lg == 0)) { return (null); // eof } return (new String(lin, 0, lg)); } I’m really surprised by this. It looks like something pulled directly from K&R’s “C Programming Language” (a great book regardless), minus the access level modifer and exception handling, etc. Even though I understand the implementation, it just seems like it was written by a C programmer and bypasses most of Java’s object oriented nature. Isn’t there a better way to do this, using the StringTokenizer class or maybe using the split method of String or the java.util.regex package instead?

  • Election 2012: Twitter Breaks Records with MySQL

    - by Bertrand Matthelié
Twitter VP of Infrastructure Operations Engineering Mazen Rawashdeh shared news and numbers yesterday on his blog: "Last night, the world tuned in to Twitter to share the election results as U.S. voters chose a president and settled many other campaigns. Throughout the day, people sent more than 31 million election-related Tweets (which contained certain key terms and relevant hashtags). And as results rolled in, we tracked the surge in election-related Tweets at 327,452 Tweets per minute (TPM). These numbers reflect the largest election-related Twitter conversation during our 6 years of existence, though they don’t capture the total volume of all Tweets yesterday." "Last night, Twitter averaged about 9,965 TPS from 8:11pm to 9:11pm PT, with a one-second peak of 15,107 TPS at 8:20pm PT and a one-minute peak of 874,560 TPM. Seeing a sustained peak over the course of an entire event is a change from the way people have previously turned to Twitter during live events. Now, rather than brief spikes, we are seeing sustained peaks for hours." Congrats to Jeremy Cole, Davi Arnaut and the rest of the team at Twitter for their excellent work! Jeremy recently held a keynote presentation at MySQL Connect describing how MySQL powers Twitter, and why they chose and continue to rely on MySQL for their operations. You can watch the presentation here. He also went into more details during another presentation later that day and you can access the slides here. Below a couple of tweets from Jeremy after what have surely been hectic days...  Keep up the good work guys!

Specifically, given: A Debian or Ubuntu OS Running a web server (apache2), and A database (MySQL), and A DNS server (bind), and Being used by up to 100 concurrent users, at some points each downloading high-resolution (0.5 to 1 MB) images via a web app. How much should one budget in terms of RAM, type of processor(s), and number of cores?     The following code shows a simple method of parsing through an XML file/string. We can get the parent name, child name, attributes etc from the XML. The namespace System.Xml would be the only additional namespace that we would be using. string myXMl = "<Employees>" + "<Employee ID='1' Name='John Mayer'" + "Address='12th Street'" + "City='New York' Zip='10004'>" + "</Employee>" + "</Employees>"; XmlDocument xDoc = new XmlDocument();xDoc.LoadXml(myXMl);XmlNodeList xNodeList = xDoc.SelectNodes("Employees/child::node()");foreach (XmlNode xNode in xNodeList){ if (xNode.Name == "Employee") { string ID = xNode.Attributes["ID"].Value; //Outputs: 1 string Name = xNode.Attributes["Name"].Value;//Outputs: John Mayer string Address = xNode.Attributes["Address"].Value;//Outputs: 12th Street string City = xNode.Attributes["City"].Value;//Outputs: New York string Zip = xNode.Attributes["Zip"].Value; //Outputs: 10004 }} Lets look at another XML: string myXMl = "<root>" + "<parent1>..some data</parent1>" + "<parent2>" + "<Child1 id='1' name='Adam'>data1</Child1>" + "<Child2 id='2' name='Stanley'>data2</Child2>" + "</parent2>" + "</root>"; XmlDocument xDoc = new XmlDocument();xDoc.LoadXml(myXMl);XmlNodeList xNodeList = xDoc.SelectNodes("root/child::node()"); //Traverse the entire XML nodes.foreach (XmlNode xNode in xNodeList) { //Looks for any particular nodes if (xNode.Name == "parent1") { //some traversing.... } if (xNode.Name == "parent2") { //If the parent node has child nodes then //traverse the child nodes foreach (XmlNode xNode1 in xNode.ChildNodes) { string childNodeName = xNode1.Name; //Ouputs: Child1 string childNodeData = xNode1.InnerText; //Outputs: data1 //Loop through each attribute of the child nodes foreach (XmlAttribute xAtt in xNode1.Attributes) { string attrName = xAtt.Name; //Outputs: id string attrValue = xAtt.Value; //Outputs: 1 } } }}

  • CIC 2010 - Ghost Stories and Model Based Design

    - by warren.baird
I was lucky enough to attend the collaboration and interoperability congress recently. The location was very beautiful and interesting, it was held in the mountains about two hours outside Denver, at the Stanley hotel, famous both for inspiring Steven King's novel "The Shining" and for attracting a lot of attention from the "Ghost Hunters" TV show. My visit was prosaic - I didn't get to experience the ghosts the locals promised - but interesting, with some very informative sessions. I noticed one main theme - a lot of people were talking about Model Based Design (MBD), which is moving design and manufacturing away from 2d drawings and towards 3d models. 2d has some pretty deep roots in industrial manufacturing and there have been a lot of challenges encountered in making the leap to 3d. One of the challenges discussed in several sessions was how to get model information out to the non-engineers in the company, which is a topic near and dear to my heart. In the 2D space, people without access to CAD software (for example, people assembling a product on the shop floor) can be given printouts of the design - it's not particularly efficient, and it definitely isn't very green, but it tends to work. There's no direct equivalent in the 3D space. One of the ways that AutoVue is used in industrial manufacturing is to provide non-CAD users with an easy to use, interactive 3D view of their products - in some cases it's directly used by people on the shop floor, but in cases where paper is really ingrained in the process, AutoVue can be used by a technical publications person to create illustrative 2D views that can be printed that show all of the details necessary to complete the work. Are you making the move to model based design? Is AutoVue helping you with your challenges? Let us know in the comments below.

  • What do you consider to be a high-level language and for what reason?

    - by Anto
Traditionally, C was called a high-level language, but these days it is often referred to as a low-level language (it is high-level compared to Assembly, but it is very low-level compared to, for instance, Python, these days). Generally, everyone calls languages of the sort of Python and Java high-level languages nowadays. How would you judge whether a programming language really is a high-level language (or a low-level one)? Must you give direct instructions to the CPU while programming in a language to call it low-level (e.g. Assembly), or is C, which provides some abstraction from the hardware, a low-level language too? Has the meaning of "high-level" and "low-level" changed over the years?

  • A certain flash application causes a system crash

    - by noobermin
It's no surprise I guess. Go here to try it! http://www.belgeler.com/blg/2hni/griffiths-introduction-to-electrodynamics-3-ed-solutions-manual It's wonderful, after a few seconds, top shows that our good friend plugin-container takes 83% of the physical memory (8 GB) before everything freezes and the PC doesn't respond. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 and I have an nvidia (GTS 250) card with the "post-release updates" version of the driver. OFFTOPIC: Yes, it's the solutions manual. I'm self-studying so I don't have a professor to check my work. Please don't judge me :)

  • How to design network protocols

    - by dandroid
As a programmer, you work on your software design skills. You learn about things such as modularity and reusability and how you can achieve them in code. There's plenty of literature on the subject and engineers talk about it all the time. What about if you want to design network protocols? How do you judge that protocol X is badly designed while Y is well designed? (eg. in programming you are often pointed out to a well-written piece of code in order to learn from it - what is the equivalent for network protocols?) For example, suppose I want to design a P2P protocol similar to BitTorrent or I want to make a better version of the Socks protocol. How would I go about doing a good job on this? Thanks!

  • Ultra-quick Samsung WebKit review

On Thursday I got a Samsung bada test phone (the Wave) that runs the latest installment of Samsung WebKit, and of course I subjected it to various tests. The verdict is clear: excellent browser. As far as I’m concerned it ousts Opera Mobile from my personal top three.Judge for yourself. This is what the latest Samsung WebKit supports: It scores second, after Safari 4 for desktop, in my great WebKit test. It leaves both iPhone and Android in the dust; although I haven’t yet tested Android 2.1 and...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
