• Why is my Mac beeping at me in a Sprint-Nextel-PTT kind of way?

  I'm really stumped about this one. Before on OSX 10.5 and now on OSX 10.6, my Mac occasionally beeps at me. It's a split-second "bee-bee-beep" that sounds vaguely similar to the push-to-talk beep you hear on Sprint/Nextel PTT commercials. I haven't been able to isolate what's running when it happens or what happens before it happens. Possible culprits are Quicksilver, Firefox, DropBox, Evernote helper, TrueCrypt, Wally. Any thoughts? • Colour Issues in OSX Terminal ssh'd to Ubuntu terminal

  In the OSX terminal, I'm having some colour issues. If i am working locally, there are no colours. If i ssh into my opensolaris machine (using screen inside ssh) there are no colours. If i then ssh into my ubuntu virtualmachine, and say, vim edit a file, the colours are completely broken. On quitting vim, it then keeps the broken colours and applies them to everything until i force a terminal bell. I assume this is a misconfiguration of the ubuntu machines colours, or a mismatching of terminal emulators. What is the best fix in this instance.

  I'm trying to delete a file under OSX Lion, but can't. I get the following message: The item XYZ.txt~ can’t be moved to the Trash because it can’t be deleted. Here's what I've tried: select file and press COMMAND + DELETE (I get the message above.) renaming the file in finder (There is no option to rename the file.) sudo ls -a in a terminal (The file does not appear.) sudo rm XYZ.txt~ (I get "No such file or directory".) How do I remove this file? EDIT The file went away after restarting. My guess is that it was a glitch in finder.

• Rosetta Stone Network V3 doesn't recognize built-in microphone in OSX Lion

  I am using Rosetta Stone Network V3 on an early 2011 MacBook Pro running OSX Lion 10.7.3. When I log in, select a language and level, and then a lesson, I am prompted to select a microphone. The built in microphone doesn't show up, yet I've used it multiple times for other applications. I heard from another user that it doesn't work if headphones with a built-in microphone are used. I have not yet tried a USB microphone. Is there some free work around to this? I would prefer to not have to buy a USB microphone, but if that is the only solution, then I'll live. Edit: I noticed that Rosetta Stone tells me that if I don't have a microphone I should disable speech to move on, but that option is grayed out for me.

• How do I change OSX package install directory?

  It drives me nuts that every time I download a binary to run on OSX that it wants to install in system directories. ~/Applications is a perfectly fine place to install and doesn't require blindly authenticating somebody else's binary. Is there a way to change the install directory for packages? On a few I've been able to open the package and edit the plist to install it elsewhere, but that doesn't work universally. I install from source when I can, but it isn't always an option. Is there a good way to force the installer to use ~/Applications?

• mac osx cannot connect to windows 7 machine

  I have a Mac OSX (Snow Leopard 10.6.6) setup on a network with several Windows 7 machines. When trying to place a large file on a Windows share the connection to the Windows share gets lost and I am unable to reconnect until I reboot the Mac. I know this is on the Windows side because the Mac can connect and transfer files to Server 2008 and XP without issue. Looking in the log file I see this message SharePointBrowser::handleOpenCallBack returned 12 I have tried restarting the com.apple.netauth.sysagent service but that did not resolve the situation. I can do an nslookup to the Windows 7 machine, but trying to ping the machine by hostname always gives a hostname lookup failure (I can ping via IP address). I cannot connect to the machine via IP adress either. Any help would be appreciated.

I have 3 gmail accounts & 1 yahoo account. In windows, I use Microsoft outlook or microsoft outlook express. But In mac is there any inbuilt software for it ? If not, is that any freely available mail client for mac osx ? ----------------------- 2 ---------------------------- One more thing, My system administrators has banned regular gmail & yahoo sites. Means I can't use gmail or yahoo site for mailing. Ok. I don't want to break my office rules - but what about my mails on gmail & yahoo, they are really very important for me.   hi i am using mac osx 10.6.3 (snow leopard) and sometimes when i have a window selected the file menu doesnt update in relation to the window im currently on. i have to click around on different windows then go back to the window i want for the file menu to display. this really annoys me - the one thing that pisses me off on mac system. i wish they had copied how microsoft is doing it. anyone know a fix for this? or its something i have to live with.

• OSX: Selecting default application for all unknown and different file types (extensions)

  I work in cluster computing and am using Mac OS X 10.6. I send off hundreds of computing jobs a day, and each one comes back with with a different extension. For example, svmGeneSelect.o12345 which is the std output of my svmGeneSelect job which is job number 12345. I don't control the extensions. All files are plain text. I want OSX to open any file extension that it hasn't seen before with my favorite text editor when I click on it. Or even better set up file association defaults for extension patterns ie textEdit for extensions matching *.o*. I do NOT want to create file associations for individual files since this extension will only ever exist once, and I do not want to go through the process of selecting the application to use for each file. • Exchanged HDD in MacBook Pro - OSX installation disk shows prohibitory sign

  I exchanged the HDD in my 2007 MacBook Pro and removed the dvd-drive because it was making terrible noise everytime I booted the MacBook. The new HDD is a Corsair Force F120 SATA SSD. Everytime I try to launch an OSX Lion installation disk or USB stick I get the grey prohibitory sign and the machine shuts down after a while. Since I didn't format the SSD beforehand there is still Windows 7 on it. It shows the white progress bar with the message "Windows is loading files" but never finishes it. I don't want Windows on that machine, just thought this fact may be important. Any ideas what is wrong?

• Keyboard shortcut to jump between tabs on OSX Terminal

  In OSX Terminal.app, if you open new windows, you can easily switch between them with Cmd-1, Cmd-2, Cmd-3, etc. You can also cycle between tabs, using Cmd-Shift-{ and Cmd-Shift-}. But is there a way to jump straight to a particular tab, like you can with windows? e.g. Cmd-Shift-3 to jump to the third tab? (That's not it, of course.) I'm pretty sure it's impossible out of the box, but what if I'm willing to write some AppleScript to make this work?

• MAC OSX 10.5.8 need to save rsync password with ssh-copy-id

  Hello all, I'll start by saying I'm very new to MAC but comfortable in using the command line thanks to using a linux a lot. I currently have rsync setup to run between a MAC OSX 10.5.8 server to a Linux Centos 5.5 Server. This is the command I'm running on the MAC server: rsync -avhe ssh "/Path/To/Data" [email protected]:data/ As it does it prompts for a password but I need it to save the password. After looking around I need to use: ssh-keygen -t dsa save the passkey and then move it over to the Linux server using: ssh-copy-id -i .ssh/id_dsa.pub [email protected] But ssh-copy-id doesnt seem to exist on the MAC server. How do I copy this key over? I've tried searching for the answer myself but the help seems to be all over the place for this.. Any help is greatly appreciated. Scott

  I'm trying to debug some issues with my Mac. This machine is used as continuous integration server. It stops responding from time to time. I think it could be some software issue, since the machine is working (so i.e. it's not a kernel panic) - that is when I go to the server room I see the login screen and I can move the mouse. Unfortunately I can't login neither directly nor by VNC or SSH. There is a nice tool that helps in debugging this type of problem called aTop. It's like top but with history. Unfortunately it's Linux-only software. Is there any tool that is similar to aTop for OSX?

  Hi, I have some really sensitive data that I am trying to compress and back up so I can reformat. It's absolutely imperative that nothing happens to these files. I'm a developer so I have very little room for error... plus I'd really hate it if any of my .mp3's got corrupted! • Updating from OSX Lion 10.7.2 to 10.7.4

  I just got my Mac upgraded to 10.7.2, just to be able to install Xcode 4.3.3. However, when I try to install Xcode 4.3.3, it says that it requires a minimum of OSX 10.7.3. Then using the "Software Upgrade" tool it detects successfully for me that a combined upgrade to 10.7.4 is available. As I select Install Item, the download starts however, it fails after complete download (taking two hours) saying something like "the update cannot be saved". I have done this twice already, and followed it up until 5 minutes were left. I have also checked that there is enough space (60 GB) available on my hard disk, while the update requires around 1.5 GB. The question is what is causing the problem mentioned in bold above.

• What metric captures why my OSX machine is so slow during XCode indexing

  My entire machine OSX Lion machine slows down while XCode 4.4 is indexing. The CPU is less than 10% busy, I've got over 500 MB free memory, plenty of disk space, disk IO rate is not high, network activity is not high. Indexing just a few files can take minutes and builds are extremely slow. While this is going on, even loading a new web page in Chrome can be slow. Knowing how to fix it would be great, but more fundamentally how can I measure what is actually going slowly? What metrics should I be looking at? Nothing in Activity Monitor, iostat, top, or sar betray anything about what's going on to me. Even getting a man page is interminable.

• PDF rendering issue os OSX

  I came across some very odd rendering when trying to view a PDF file that needed to print out. I was wondering anyone has come across a similar problem before or has any ideas as to what might be causing this. PDF when viewed on OSX 10.7.4 - Preview version 6.0. I've tried opening the file in Skim but that doesn't work either. PDF as it should be, and as Chrome renders it in browser, but not if I download it onto my machine. Illustrator complains about "an unknown imaging construct" when I open the file, but renders it fine nevertheless, Photoshop doesn't have any problems either.

• How to assign hotkeys in OSX-snow-leopard

  I am trying to assign a hotkey to open a folder in snow leopard. For example, in windows i could simply press the Windows+E to open the My Computer folder (or manually assign whatever folder i wanted to open). Is there a way to get this same behavior in OSX? I want to be able to launch applications, and open folder with my own keyboard mappings. For launching applications I use automator, create a service that receives no input to 'launch application' (from the utilities library). Then i can assign a keyboard shortcut to this service. Now i can launch applications with keyboard shortcuts. I still dont know how to open a folder. I know this can be done using quicksilver - but am looking for an organic approach that does not require any additional installs.

• Hiding some users in the user list of the OSX 10.6 login panel

  Is there a way to show only some users in the login panel? I'm using OSX 10.6, and if I recall correctly I did something like that in a distant past but I really can't find out how. In the system preferences there seem to be nothing like that (neither in Accounts nor in Security, for instance), and Tinkertool does not do that. Google didn't help. edit: I hoped there was a graphical solution, such as while hiding them from the first screen, having also a button like "show all". I guess there isn't or somebody would have answered. Maybe I'll just change the usernames adding leading Z at the start of the usernames of the ones to "hide", so they'll appear lower in the list... :/

• OSX: iTunes won't play .ogg files over shared library

  I have an OSX 10.5 box that is sharing its iTunes library and another 10.6 box connecting to that library through iTunes. It works as expected except for ogg files. Those ogg files are visible and selectable in the shared library but will not play through the share on the client machine. If I move the ogg files to the client machine they play locally just fine. They also play locally on the host machine. They just won't play through the iTunes share. Is this a bug or some other known issue? Is there a fix, short of converting all ogg files to mp3?
