  • DHCPD (Slackware) - Disabling auto-generation of gateway as DNS server

    Good day, I am using a Linux workstation on Slackware 13.37. One "problem" I have had to deal with ever since 11.0 is the following: DNS servers are queried and determined at startup by DHCP daemon (DHCPD) This is invoked at startup by a script located at /etc/rc.d/rc.dhcpd My DNS servers for my ISP are resolved correctly, and are stored in a list located at /etc/resolv.conf However, the one annoying problem is that my gateway IP (ie: 192.168.1.1) is always automatically put at the top of the list in resolv.conf, meaning I have to always wait for a timeout before a valid DNS server is used to resolve an address (ie: timeout on 192.168.1.1 because it is not actually a DNS server, then DHCP uses the next server in the list). I could lower my DNS resolution timeout so the gateway query times out quicker, but that's not what I want, as I don't want to degrade the abilities of legitimate DNS servers. What I would like to do is change how DHCPD operates so that it does NOT put my gateway IP address at the beginning of this list. I've searched via "man dhcpd", etc, and haven't found the exact answer yet. Any help on this issue is appreciated. Thank you all in advance for your time and assistance.

  • Changing default gateway on workstations connected to Windows Domain SBS server

    We have xp workstations connected onto a small business server acting as active directory/isa firewall/proxy (no dhcp). Is there a reason that after installing a 2nd firewall on the network (same subnet etc), that changing the default gateway on the workstations isnt sufficient to route inet traffic through the new firewall? A freshly setup linux box connects straight on to the alternate firewall with just ip, default gateway. dns settings. Will having ISA still active on the network confuse the process? Are there further config settings deeper down in windows that need attention? Any ideas pointers on this would be appreciated? Other info: Firewalls tried: Smoothwall and Ipcop; small ethernet netwoork 40 pcs; can ping to new firwalls from workstations; activating web proxy on new firewall and reconfiguring workstation browser works fine; Point of 2nd firewall is lack of some necessary features on ISA for a linux app; Would be nice to have some redundancy to though

    I am trying to make an iptables gateway. I ordered 3 dedicated server from my hosting company all with dual nics. One server has been given all the ip addresses and is connected directly to the internet and has its other nic connected to a switch where the other servers are all connected also. I want to setup iptables so for example the ip address 50.0.2.4 comes into my gateway server it fowards all the traffic to a private ip address using the second nic. This way the second nic can do what ever it needs and can respond back also. I also want it setup that if any of the other servers needs to download anything over the inernet it is able to do so and by using the same ip address that is used for its incomming traffic. Lastly I would like to be able to setup dns and other needed networking stuff that i maybe not thinking about.

  • How to tell Windows 7 to ignore a default gateway

    I currently have 2 network cards in my PC -- one connected to an internal network on a router with a disconnected WAN port (10.x.x.x), and one connected to the internet through a consumer router (192.168.0.x). Windows seems to recognize them correctly (my "Network and Sharing Center" lists them as "No Internet" and "Internet" respectively), however when I try browsing the internet it always tries the internal network's default gateway, rather than the one with internet access. Trying to ping a website results in "Reply from 10.0.0.1: Destination net unreachable.". A simple "route delete 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 10.0.0.1" fixes the problems, but they return upon reboot, or upon renewing my IP. Is there any way to tell Windows to ignore one NIC's default gateway, or to at least give them priorities?

    Hello, I am programming a mobile app which send sms. I need a gateway that let me put a "from" parameter. On many gateways, I can only subscribe, put my mobile phone number as the sender after a verification process. The main problem is that the phone number verification is only available for my and not for my users. My customers can send an sms but the receiver does not see their mobile phone number in the "from" field. Do you know a good gateway which support that (in an automated way) ?     I'm looking at moving away from using my DIR-825 as a gateway and moving into a Linux box to do it all for me. I've found IPCop, but I'm looking for something with a little more power. My main goal is basically to be able to point different external domain names to different internal servers. backup.example.com - 192.168.0.5 home.example.com - 192.168.0.1 I host my DNS on my own dedicated server (windows), so I don't know much about doing the gateway thing in my home (my hosting provider does it all for me). Do any of you know of any free Linux Distros that can accomplish what I'm looking for?

  • VPN doesn't have access to drives unless I use the default gateway

    I am trying to setup a VPN connection on one of our office servers so that many of our employees can access our drives when out of town or for important business meetings. However I have a weird glitch in where if the default gateway option is checked they can see the drives and files, but get no internet access. If I have the default gateway option unchecked then they have there internet and can successfully connect to the VPN, but they are not able to see any of the drives or files. The server is running Windows Server 2003 Standard while the employees run either XP or 7 Professional. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you. EDIT The VPN setup is PPTP and the main server is behind a SonicWall if that is of any importance.

    i have a ubuntu server which i want to use as a transparent proxy, (i have no issue setting up squid, just the iptables. The server only has one network interface. The server sits on the same subnet as the router which is the current gateway to the internet for clients, i want to simply set the gateway on the clients pointing at the transparent proxy which in turn forwards the requests to the router and off to the internet.   • OpenBSD: Gateway outside subnet (works in Linux)

    We need to set up an OpenBSD host to use a default gateway that's outside of it's subnet. This is all I need to do on Linux (not the actual IPs) to achieve it: ifconfig eth0 33.33.33.33/31 up route add 33.33.33.254 dev eth0 route add default gw 33.33.33.254 The problem is that we don't know the proper equivalent of the middle command in OpenBSD. The man page says: If the destination is directly reachable via an interface requiring no intermediary system to act as a gateway, the -iface modifier should be specified; Sadly we can't seem to figure out how to make it work with that. For example, if someone orders 3 items with the total of $100.00, paypal shows one item with "Items Purchased" as the description and the total cost. I'd like an itemized list.   • PayPal: IPN vs PDT

    Hi, I'm having some trouble choosing between PayPal's Instant Payment Notification (IPN) and Payment Data Transfer (PDT). Basically, users buy a one-off product on my site, pay on PayPal, and return to my site. I understand how IPN works but I'm now seeing that I might be able to trigger the various actions that take place after a successful purchase more easily with PDT, as the data gets returned there and then (as opposed to needing a separate listener). However, PayPal's PDT documentation contains this cryptic line: "PDT is not meant to be used with credit card or Express Checkout transactions." ... but I can't find anything further whatsoever on the topic. (1) Are credit cards REALLY not meant to be used with PDT? I would like more than a sentence. (2) Does that mean that a user must have/create a PayPal account to pay? (3) Does it mean that if I want to allow users to pay with their PayPal accounts AND/OR with credit cards directly, I must implement IPN? Could anyone who's gone through this kindly shed some light?   • Paypal Encrypted Website payments

    I am trying to integrate a PayPal Website Payments Standard Cart Upload payment type into my shopping cart. I integrated Google Checkout a while back and I did not find it overly confusing as I do paypal. I am getting info on how to encrypt it from here: https://cms.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/?&cmd=_render-content&content_ID=developer/e_howto_html_encryptedwebpayments#id08A3I0P017Q Paypal says I need to generate a private key and a public certificate using OpenSSL. I went to OpenSSL and downloaded the latest release, which is just a folder containing various files but I see no application I can use, not sure what to do here. Even if I were to get OpenSSL to generate me a private key and public cert, the next step is to download either an MS or Java command line tool to create the encrypted cart ahead of time with the cart-total, tax, etc. which sounds crazy to me, like I am supposed to manually do this prior to every order?? Obviously I do not know the items in the cart the customer is going to buy before hand so I need this to be done on the fly on my website using PHP. But I am completely lost. There has to be a way to setup dynamic secure cart uploads to paypal. Can someone please point me in the right direction?
