• How to install flareGet_1.0-1(beta)_deb_rpm.tar.gz?

  I have lot about Flareget download manager and I wanted to install it in my computer. I visted the website and dowloaded the the file flareGet_1.0-1(beta)_deb_rpm.tar.gz and saved it in the location /home/suhailcholassery/Download/flareGet_1.0-1(beta)_deb_rpm.tar.gz. The thing is that I am new to Ubuntu and don't know how to install it. I tried typing the following command in terminal as per the readme's instruction enclosed in file. yum install flareGet-1.0-1.i386.rpm, but the reply was the following: You need to be root to perform this command. And I don't know how that is to be done. Isn't there any simpler way for installing this package?

• Installing driver for Ralink Realtek 8187 WiFi adapter

  I purchased a WiFi adapter online, and it came with an installation CD with drivers. I installed it just fine on Windows, and am now trying on Ubuntu 10.10. The CD came with the driver files for Linux as well, but I have no idea why they aren't working - my guess is that I don't properly understand what to do with them. I have uploaded the contents of the folder which came with the CD here. There is a README in there, but the instructions under the installation header didn't get me anywhere unfortunately. • Need instructions on how to create wpa_supplicant.conf and add fast_reauth=0 to it

  Like many other natty users on a university/academic network, I'm experiencing annoying frequent disconnects/hangs/delays. See, for instance here. I would like to learn how to add fast_reauth=0 to the wpa_supplicant.conf file. This file, it seems, does not exit by default, and needs to be manually created first: README You will need to make a configuration file, e.g. /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf, with network configuration for the networks you are going to use. Further, I installed wpa_gui which probably needs to be launched with parameters, else it's pretty blank... What I'm hoping for is this: That creating a wpa_supplicant.conf file with fast_reauth=0 in it, saving it to the relevant path, will work and make my uni wireless (more or even completely) stable. I read mixed reviews about wicd (as an alternative to the network manager). Also note that on my basic wlan at home (with bog-standard wpa encryption) the connection is stable. Thanks!

• Installing programs from a download

  Hello, my name is Anthony and I'm new to Ubuntu and any other Linux OS for that matter. My question concerns downloading a program, and then installing it. The program is called Remotedroid, it lets you use your phone as a wireless keyboard and mouse. I'm use to windows automatically starting setup upon download and cant figure out how to initiate the install in Ubuntu. The programs website says its compatible with Linux OS and the readme file says to just click the extension remotedroidserver.jar to use, but it wont work and none of the files do anything. I've unzipped all the files and my Java is all up to date as far as i know, I think. I'm just not getting how to run a setup in Ubuntu. I looked around this site for the answer but came up with nothing so if someone could maybe offer some insight I would be grateful. Thank you.

• How can I install the Realtek RTL8111E version 8168 driver?

  I downloaded and extracted the latest Linux driver version from Realtek. I read the readme file and it instructed me to run ./autorun.sh as root. I did that. It compiled the driver for my kernel, removed the old default module, but then it fails to install the new 8168 module. It claims that it can't be found. Can this driver be installed manually? Is there a way to fix autorun.sh so it can install properly?

  I got a bunch of C++ sources files and headers. They may use external libraries such as Boost e.g. I am interested in the process of building binaries for Windows and *nix. Makefiles (*nix) and .vcproj (Windows) call compilers with some specifications such as the order of compilation, compilation options and stuff. CMakeLists.txt can be used by CMake to build either makefiles or .vcproj and use very helpful commands such as recursive search of files, automatic linkage with known libraries, installers, variables that can be used in source files... Is there any existing tool that would generate a CMakeLists.txt from specified options ? Options could be like : scan this folder and make a library out of it, then scan this other folder and make an executable and automatically link both with Boost as well along with a user friendly installer with generated INSTALL.txt and README.txt. Something very powerful like that.

• Issues with Apache redirect to www-prefixed URL

  I have a website with domain mysite.com. I would like to have it so that if a user types in "mysite.com" it will redirect to "www.mysite.com". Additionally, "mysite.com/subdir" will also redirect to "www.mysite.com/subdir". I've looked and made changes with vhosts and also rewrites, but it's not working for the "mysite.com/subdir"-"www.mysite.com/subdir" case. Every time I type in "mysite.com/subdir", it will redirect to "www.mysite.com". Only "www.mysite.com/subdir" works. Not sure how to troubleshoot this. I turned on rewrite logs and didn't see anything obvious, yet. This is my config files so far. Please let me know what I'm missing. Thanks! • makefile: execute one target from another target plus additional commands

  I have a makefile with something like the following targets: install: do a whole bunch of stuff to build and install dist: install cp README.txt $(INSTALL_DIR) zip $(INSTALL_DIR) I am trying to not repeat the commands from target install and make dist execute install first before executing its own commands. Calling make dist does indeed execute all commands from target install but then just stops and it does not execute its own commands, e.g. the cp. Am I missing something?

• how to disable vim autocomplete popup for plain text files?

  After literally days of tweaking, I think I got vim's autocomplete (omnicomplete + Acp plugin) to work acceptably. But the annoying thing is that it is still enabled for plain text files so I would have to type :DisableAcp for README or plain text files. How do I add logic to my vimrc so that if it detects an empty filetype it disables the Acp on startup? here is what I wrote: if &filetype == "" let g:acp_enableStartup = 0 endif but this disables Acp on start up for all files.

• xargs command works on ubuntu, but not mac

  I have the following line of code that I use to update my personal date variable in my projects to todays current date. This line works in Ubuntu's terminal, but the Mac terminal seems to be far behind. Unfortunately, I copied this snippet from some site, so I'm not sure how it exactly works.
