  Heterogeneous data access requires having the right drivers. If you have to use 32-bit ODBC drivers, you won’t find then when you start the Microsoft ODBC Administrator because it is 64-bit. The 32-bit ODBC Administrator is found here: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe You might want to make a shortcut for it to make it easy to find. • Avoid apt-get update while installing softwares on ubuntu, possible?

  I want to install a 27KB lens( reddit-lens: here ) & this "apt-get update" is going to download 20MBs(!) of data for the same. I want to avoid this update bcoz i am on a limited bandwidth connection. I also tried to install .deb file(27KB) for this lens but it says "dependancy is not satisfiable gir1.2-unity-3.0". I went on to http://www.pkgs.org to get that package & there is no version available for ubuntu 12.04. What should I do? Can i install softwares without updating cache? Is that update necessary? Also installation of some softwares requires updating cache while others dont, why?

• How can I store post rankings that change with time?

  I'm trying to learn how to code a website algorithm like Reddit.com where there are thousands of posts that need to be ranked. Their ranking algorithm works like this (you don't have to read it, its more of a general question that I have): http://amix.dk/blog/post/19588 Right now I have posts stored in a database, I record their dates and they each have an upvotes and downvotes field so I'm storing their records. I want to figure out how do you store their rankings? When specific posts have ranking values, but they change with time, how could you store their rankings? If they aren't stored, do you rank every post every time a user loads the page? When would you store the posts? Do you run a cron job to automatically give every post a new value every x minutes? Do you store their value? Which is temporary. Maybe, until that post reaches its minimum score and is forgotten?

• What are the most effective learning methods?

  After I got done speaking at the SQL Server 2008 R2 Launch Event yesterday I came back to the hotel room for a web-meeting with some of the other teachers at the University of Washington. As teachers we are always looking to improve the knowledge transfer to our students – and the Program Director found an interesting study that I thought I might share here. Below is an un-labeled chart showing the effectiveness of learning methods according to a recent study. At the top are the labels. (“Teaching” here means students teaching each other). • Reasons for Pair Programming

  I've worked in a few shops where management has passed the idea of pair programming either to me or another manager/developer, and I can't get behind it at all. From a developer stand-point I can't find a reason why moving to this coding style would be beneficial, nor as a manager of a small team have I seen any benefit. I understand that it helps on basic syntax errors and can be helpful if you need to hash something out, but managers that are out of the programming loop seem to keep seeing it as a way of keeping their designers from going to Facebook or Reddit than as a design tool. As someone close to the development floor that apparently can't quite understand from a book tossed my way or a wiki page on the subject... from a high level management position, what are the benefits of Pair Programming when dealing with Scrum or Agile environments?

• Is C++ really a bad language for beginners? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Is C++ suitable as a first language? 24 answers I'm learning C++ right now, and it's the first language I'm learning. I keep seeing on stackexchange and other forums (Reddit, etc.) that I should drop C++ and learn a higher level language like Python or Java. The only arguments I see are that "C++ is harder to learn and is more low-level than others." which don't really give a reason NOT to learn it. I want to know if there are any actual reasons for dropping C++ and taking up another, "easier" language. Or if I should keep focusing on it, and just learn others later (which is what I plan on doing).
