• Securing smtp with login

  I have a ispconfig server, and it seems that someone is using it to send spam. I got about 130 "Mail Delivery System" email about declined send email. This spammer uses my email address as sent from adress, so I get all these email adresses to my mail. I am using Postfix and Courier. I installed my server according to this guide: http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-server-debian-lenny-ispconfig3-p3 I did this a few months ago. My question: Can I secure my server to require login to be able to send email, and if so... how? Thanks! • Cardinality Estimation Bug with Lookups in SQL Server 2008 onward

  Cost-based optimization stands or falls on the quality of cardinality estimates (expected row counts).  If the optimizer has incorrect information to start with, it is quite unlikely to produce good quality execution plans except by chance.  There are many ways we can provide good starting information to the optimizer, and even more ways for cardinality estimation to go wrong.  Good database people know this, and work hard to write optimizer-friendly queries with a schema and metadata (e.g. statistics) that reduce the chances of poor cardinality estimation producing a sub-optimal plan.  Today, I am going to look at a case where poor cardinality estimation is Microsoft’s fault, and not yours. SQL Server 2005 SELECT th.ProductID, th.TransactionID, th.TransactionDate FROM Production.TransactionHistory AS th WHERE th.ProductID = 1 AND th.TransactionDate BETWEEN '20030901' AND '20031231'; The query plan on SQL Server 2005 is as follows (if you are using a more recent version of AdventureWorks, you will need to change the year on the date range from 2003 to 2007): There is an Index Seek on ProductID = 1, followed by a Key Lookup to find the Transaction Date for each row, and finally a Filter to restrict the results to only those rows where Transaction Date falls in the range specified.  The cardinality estimate of 45 rows at the Index Seek is exactly correct.  The table is not very large, there are up-to-date statistics associated with the index, so this is as expected. The estimate for the Key Lookup is also exactly right.  Each lookup into the Clustered Index to find the Transaction Date is guaranteed to return exactly one row.  The plan shows that the Key Lookup is expected to be executed 45 times.  The estimate for the Inner Join output is also correct – 45 rows from the seek joining to one row each time, gives 45 rows as output. The Filter estimate is also very good: the optimizer estimates 16.9951 rows will match the specified range of transaction dates.  Eleven rows are produced by this query, but that small difference is quite normal and certainly nothing to worry about here.  All good so far. SQL Server 2008 onward The same query executed against an identical copy of AdventureWorks on SQL Server 2008 produces a different execution plan: The optimizer has pushed the Filter conditions seen in the 2005 plan down to the Key Lookup.  This is a good optimization – it makes sense to filter rows out as early as possible.  Unfortunately, it has made a bit of a mess of the cardinality estimates. The post-Filter estimate of 16.9951 rows seen in the 2005 plan has moved with the predicate on Transaction Date.  Instead of estimating one row, the plan now suggests that 16.9951 rows will be produced by each clustered index lookup – clearly not right!  This misinformation also confuses SQL Sentry Plan Explorer: Plan Explorer shows 765 rows expected from the Key Lookup (it multiplies a rounded estimate of 17 rows by 45 expected executions to give 765 rows total). Workarounds One workaround is to provide a covering non-clustered index (avoiding the lookup avoids the problem of course): CREATE INDEX nc1 ON Production.TransactionHistory (ProductID) INCLUDE (TransactionDate); With the Transaction Date filter applied as a residual predicate in the same operator as the seek, the estimate is again as expected: We could also force the use of the ultimate covering index (the clustered one): SELECT th.ProductID, th.TransactionID, th.TransactionDate FROM Production.TransactionHistory AS th WITH (INDEX(1)) WHERE th.ProductID = 1 AND th.TransactionDate BETWEEN '20030901' AND '20031231'; Summary Providing a covering non-clustered index for all possible queries is not always practical, and scanning the clustered index will rarely be optimal.  Nevertheless, these are the best workarounds we have today. In the meantime, watch out for poor cardinality estimates when a predicate is applied as part of a lookup. The worst thing is that the estimate after the lookup join in the 2008+ plans is wrong.  It’s not hopelessly wrong in this particular case (45 versus 16.9951 is not the end of the world) but it easily can be much worse, and there’s not much you can do about it.  Any decisions made by the optimizer after such a lookup could be based on very wrong information – which can only be bad news. • BIOS flash XP, 1 long beep, 2 short beeps, over&over

  BIOS issue on HP dv9233cl laptop, wiped drive of Vista, loaded XP, not all the drives loaded. Went to the HP website, downloaded all drivers for this laptop. Started loading them. Loaded WIN Flash HP Network System BIOS Window SP42187. After a minute a low resolution screen appeared stating "It is now safe to turn off the computer" I waited a minute and half. Turned it off. Let it set 10 seconds try to start and No screen images at all and a nasty loud long beep 2 short beeps, 2 seconds of silence and it happens over & over again. I have unplugged/removed battery, still same problem, Any sugg.... Thx.. Paul

• In SSIS Convert European Currency Format to United States Currency Format

  I have an interesting problem. I have an SSIS package that processes account data. We are now processing files from Europe. These files are in a CSV format using text qualifiers. For an example of the problem: In the United States the currency format is 123456.99 (We purposely leave the thousands separator out). The files sent from Europe are coming in with two formats. One is 123456,99 and the other is 123.456,00. SSIS is attempting to parse the text file and place it into a NUMERIC(20,2) field. This causes a parsing error in SSIS even with the text qualifiers. If I change the field to CURRENCY it sends a conversion error. I would like for SSIS to deal with this directly without requiring the data to be in the United States format. Has anyone had this problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Rob

• LTO 3 tape drive needing repaired

  We have an IBM LTO 3 tape drive that needs repaired and with the £400 price tag i'm having to shop around for quotes. My question is has anyone actually repaired one before and how was in done? The first error LED was showing a 6, then i cleared the mangled tape only for it to start flashing alternate 'o' on the 7 segment display, simliar to a half 8, flashing top to bottom and it would just flash away like that coupled with a flashing amber light. I tried a reset holding the eject button for it to show an 'r' the go back to flashing again as before. I checked the IBM solutions for the codes but this flashing isn't documented at all. Would be great if anyone had any experience in this area. Thank you, Paul

• Anyone love/hate the PowerConnect line of switches from Dell?

  I am looking at replacing some unmanaged 16 port store bought GB switches and wanted to go with Cisco but it may be cost prohibitive. Instead I am looking at ProCurve or Dell's PowerConnect line up. I am looking for SNMP, Management, VLANs, and SFLOW would icing on the switch cupcake. I would get the 6224 or the 6248 and then maybe add the RPS-600 to it for redundant power. I think the RPS-600 supports multiple switches. Rackspace is also a little challenge so I am trying to do it with as little Rack Units as possible. Ideally I would go with two 6224's or a single 6248 and then do two VLANs. Thanks for any feedback. • HTTP downloads slow - FTP of same file very fast - Windows 2003

  I am having some issues with download speeds on my site via http, i am averaging around 70kbps downloading a file that is around 70mb. But if i connect to my server via FTP and download the same file on the same computer / connection i am averaging about 300+kbps. I know my server has alot of connections at any one time, probably around 400 connections. My server has a 1gbps connection to the internet so there is plenty of bandwidth available, as proven with the FTP. I have no throttling of any kind enabled in IIS. • Setting up routing for MS DirectAccess to a VMWare EsXi Host

  I'm trying to set up DirectAccess on a virtual machine so I can demonstrate it's value and then if need be add a physical machine to host it. I'm hitting a problem because the Direct Access machine (DA01) needs to have 2 public addresses actually configured on the external adapter but there is a Zyxel Zywall USG300 between the VMware ESXi host and the outside world. I've summarised my setup in this diagram If I ping from the LAN to 212.x.y.89 I get a response but if I ping from the VM I get destination host unreachable. I used "route add 212.x.y.89 192.c.d.1" and get request timed out. At that point I see outbound traffic allowed on the Zyxel firewall but nothing coming back. I'm past my understanding of routing and VMWare so am not sure how to tie down where my problem lies (or even if this setup is possible). So any help massively appreciated. Paul

• KVM Guest not reachable from host

  Hello, I'm running Ubuntu server 9.10, installed KVM etc. Created the bridge network following instructions on help.ubuntu.com/community/KVM/Networking Created a windows 2008 guest using virt-install command line (using virt-manager GUI from a remote Ubuntu desktop would not let me select the ISO location). I can however use a remote virt-manager to connect to the guest and complete the windows install. Within windows 2008 I changed the IP address but cannot ping from outside world. The bridge network appears fine - I'm not sure what else to look at! Here is the interfaces file: The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback The primary network interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet manual # auto br0 iface br0 inet static address 60.234.64.50 netmask 255.255.255.248 network 60.234.0.0 broadcast 60.234.0.255 gateway 60.234.64.49 bridge_ports eth0 bridge_stp off bridge_fd 0 bridge_maxwait 0 auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address 192.168.12.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.12.255 The ip of the windows server is 60.234.64.52 What else should I check? • How do I setup unison to sync a folder one way

  I have a 1tb NAS that has a 1tb usb external hard attached I have prepared the file system on the usb disk and mounted it I want to 100% sync my data from my nas to the usb disk - but I want it to be incremental and only have the NAS as the 'master' - eg if a file changes on the usb external hard drive I want it to ignore this change as its not the live version (not that I think the files will change on the usb disk but im paranoid the live could get overwritten) Also if a file gets deleted on live I want to retain the deleted file on the usb disk Can unison sync one-way and achive the above for me? if so with simply unison sorce/ target/ Work? Situation we have a remote Windows Server 2008R2 VPS and i just installed the Active Directory Domain Services Role. A DNS Server was also configured by default at the end of the Active Directory installation. Problem I can't get my Windows 7 machine to register itself to the domain i have just created Question What are the steps i have to take to test my Active Directory configuration, and how do i connect clients to this Domain? • Silverlight Version 4 latest build for Win7 64bit and WinXP 32bit

  I have a requirement where a few people need the latest version of Silverlight 4 installed. I know the latest version is 5.xx... but apparently with some new software we're having installed we have to use version 4 After a bit of googling i can see that the latest version is... Build 4.1.10329.0 Released May 8, 2012 We have a mix of Win7 64-bit machines and WinXP 32-bit machines. Q: Is there a different version for each OS or the same one fits all. (This seems strangely hard to decipher by googling) Q: Does anyone know where i can download the latest version 4? Microsoft do not seem to offer it anymore unless i'm just not finding it. Q: Is there a separate browser version of it or will installing it also handle any browser needs (our new software will be browser based) Any pointers much appreciated. Paul

• Can a Windows 2003 Active Directory server act as a NTP server?

  Within our LAN, there are two Windows 2003 servers with the Active Directory role. Both these servers have the time service configured to query NTP servers on the internet for the accurate time. That works fine. I've just installed XenServer v5.6 and it's asked me for the IP address of an NTP server. Without tweaking the firewall, I cannot configure this server to reference an internet based NTP server. But can I configure it to use the IP address of the internal AD servers, i.e. do AD servers also act as NTP servers to other computers? Thanks, Rob.

• SharePoint Designer prompts for credentials when edited from IE8

  Our intranet is hosted using the free SharePoint services on Windows 2003. Consider the following page: http://vserver003/help/technology/multimedia/multimedia.htm On selecting "Edit with Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer" from IE8, SPD launches, opens the website and then the selected page - all is well. In order to make moving the intranet easier, we've set-up a DNS setting called intranet.company.local so you can also access the intranet that way: http://intranet.company.local/help/technology/multimedia/multimedia.htm However, when you edit this page, SPD designer prompts you for credential, i.e. domain\username and password. If you enter the details it opens fine. If you don't enter the details, the page still opens but not the website. Any ideas have to get around this prompt? Haven't a clue where to start looking. • Enable roaming profile from group policy

  I've had a reasonable look around the AD policies but am I right in saying the only place that you can enable & define the group policy location is by editing the user, i.e. there isn't a group policy setting to (say) "Set the profile location to \myserver\users\%username%\profile" for all users in group XYZ? I suspect this might be because of chicken & egg, i.e. group policy is applied after the profile has been loaded and therefore can't specify the location. Cheers, Rob.

  Very similar question to: Physically Identify the failed hard drive But for Windows 2003 this time. Scenario: Four identical SATA hard drives plugged into motherboard (no RAID controller here) Configured as single drive in Windows as a spanned volume One of them is starting to fail with error "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk3" How do you cross-reference Harddisk3 to the physical SATA connection on the motherboard so you know which drive to replace? I know replacing this drive will trash the spanned array requiring it to be rebuilt anyway so my rough and ready solution is: Delete the spanned partition Create individual partitions on each drive labelled E: F: G: and H: and work out which one is Harddisk3 Power down, remove each disk one at a time, power-up until the drive letter disappears But this seems a rather crude method of identifying the drive. The SATA connectors will be numbered on the motherboard but I appreciate this might not cross-match to what Windows calls them. Thanks, Rob.

• Connecting my iPhone to iTunes causes my Acer laptop to crash

  Hello I have an Acer Travelmate 8200 laptop and whenever I connect my Iphone to it, it crashes with the BSOD(Blue Screen Of Death). I have figured out that if I delete all the pictures in my phone I can get it to connect but that is not a ideal long term solution. I also read that it may be a conflict with the built in web-cam I have but I've upgraded the driver and I still get the crashing problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated! • No HDMI audio - Windows 8 - ASUS H81M-PLUS

  I have an issue with HDMI audio on Windows 8 using an ASUS H81M-PLUS motherboard (without an external GFX card). There are many forum posts advising you to go into playback devices and setting HDMI to be default - I have done this. To eliminate what works and what doesn't work: I have not been able to get sound from my HDTV using HDMI. I have used this HDMI cable with my PS3, so this cable should be fine. I am able to use the HDMI cable in extended mode, so that I have two monitors (including the TV), just no audio. This HDMI cable goes straight from the motherboard to the TV. Below I have included 'Device manager', and 'Playback Devices' (Sound). Device Manager Playback Devices, showing disabled and disconnected devices I am at a loss. I have uninstalled all drivers, and then rebooted and made windows look for the correct ones, made sure the HDMI device was default. Thanks, Paul

• Checking whether product key will work with SBS 2003

  We've recently absorbed a small company who had a Dell PowerEdge server running SBS 2003. For some reason, the hard disks have been wiped. We have the product key though from the sticker on the side of the case but not the installation media: Win SBS Std 2003 1-2 CPU 5-CAL OEM software We do have a Dell labelled set of four CDs labelled SBS 2003 in our store and I've built a VM from this media but it doesn't prompt for the product key during install. Is there any way to ascertain whether this media will work with this product key without going through activation? I know one can activate several times but would prefer to check we've got the right media before doing this. Thanks, Rob.

• How long to erase flash memory (RAID controller)?

  I made a bit of a boo boo last night in upgrading the BIOS in a Silicon Image Sil3132 eSATA adapter. It's a RAID controller in a server. I accidently flashed it with the wrong BIOS ;-) Not the end of the world as this card only cost £15 but I'm trying to flash it with the correct BIOS as it won't obviously work anymore. Silicon Image supply a DOS program for flashing and I thought I'd use the Erase function to get rid of the old BIOS. Any idea how long this should take? • Ad Agency storage/file server +backup needed (NAS or something else?)

  Looking for a "this is all you need" recommendation. We're a small ad agency with both mac & pcs that access and share files from a 3 yr old Windows 2000 box (no server software). We currently have 1TB on the "server" and back it up to 2 different Seagate Free Agent Pro 1TB external drives. But we're low on space and are looking for something that's bigger, that we can still access from Mac & PC, EASY backup system, secure from viruses, firewall enabled. Not sure if a NAS will work or if we should have a real server. We don't really get on that box except to restore files, or run Norton on it. I hope I've provided enough for a general recommendation. • Sending large files - do any vendors sell their solution?

  We currently have an account with www.mailbigfile.com to allow us to send & receive files which exceed our client's email limits. In our industry, a 10MB limit is not unknown. Mailbigfile works fine for what it is but increasingly, our clients are starting to block it as a security risk. A solution would be for us to license the software and run it from our own web server which is far less likely to be blocked. Does anyone know of vendors in this market? We are looking at web collaboration systems but that's a much bigger project. The technology behind www.mailbigfile.com isn't that complex (http upload, email notification and then http download) so I'm hoping it won't be very expensive. Cheers, Rob.

• Windows authenticated users have lost access to master (default) database

  Something very strange has occurred on our production SQL database. Users connecting via Windows authentication appear to have lost all access to the master database. By default, all logins have the default database set to master. So when you connect using SQL Server management studio, they get the error: "Cannot open user default database. Login failed error 4064". What's also worrying is that we have a group called "COMPANY - SQL Administrator" which has sysadmin rights and users in this group also get the same error. Worse, they don't appear to be system administrators anymore... If they change their default database to something else, they can connect and then work on the database, it's just the master database that is problematic. I'm not even sure by what mechanism windows authenticated users get access to the master database. Is it something hard coded in or some property that's got changed? Any ideas? Cheers, Rob.

• i accidentally deleted the recovery folder on a partition (win vista home)

  i accidentally deleted the recovery folder on the recovery partition (win vista home) i think it was some sort of scheduled maintenance of some program that i did not configure properly? oops... lol i called toshiba and they said i needed to buy a recovery program, which i didnt bother doing. I bought a legal copy of vista and would like to install the correct files and in a way that when my computer starts looking for files it will eventually find them or i can point to the partition. i'm pretty sure it's not a matter of copy and paste (is it?) thanks Paul
