  • Bash script getting automatically deleted from Ubuntu 12.04 Server?

    I'm running a bash script on an ubuntu 12.04 through cron. The script works fine for a few weeks (runs daily backups of websites, mysql databases, and copies to Amazon S3). However, twice now I've noticed that backups stopped happening. Both times the backup script (backupscript.sh) located in my home folder was no longer there. No one else has access to this server, so nothing was manually changed on the server and no one deleted the file by mistake. The cron job (nano /etc/crontab) still references this script, but the script itself disappears. What could cause this to happen? Does Ubuntu delete the script if it runs into some sort of error?

  • Under what circumstances might an IIS6 website be automatically deleted?

    Late last week my colleagues did some hardware maintenance on one of our vmWare esxi servers. One of the guests is a Windows Server 2003 Web Edition system that runs our low-traffic web sites. We discovered this morning that one of those websites was no longer working with what appeared to be an SSL error. After logging in, I found that the web site in question had been deleted from IIS! Is it possible for this to happen without a user actually going in and deleting that single web site? All of the other sites were fine. The files for the site in question had not been touched. I just re-created the web site, assigned the SSL cert, and everything was working again. When I logged in, I did see the 'Unexpected Shutdown' dialog.

  • SharePoint 2010 and Excel Calculation Services

    I'm curious what the requirements are for Excel Calculation Services in Sharepoint 2010. I found an architecture document but it doesn't list out the specific requirements. (architecture I understand that you can install all the services on one server but it isn't recommended. It then talks about how you can scale up the application servers, and web front ends. What should the hardware look like for both the application server and web front ends? Do I need to setup a standalone box for each application server?

  • is there a GOTCHA - DBCC CHECKDB ('DBNAME', NOINDEX)?

    I am turning on DBCC CHECKDB in our OLTP environment (SQL 2005,2008). System overhead is a very visible thing on our serversso I want them to be as efficient as it makes sense for them to be. HENCE - I want to turn on the NOINDEX option, an option I've never used before. My thoughts are these: if there is a problem with an index that is detected outside the integrity check, that I can just rebuild the index. Also the duration of the integrity checks will be drastically reduced, and the nastier corruption will be detected. What is the flaw in my plan? Thanks, Deb

  • Create a dependent drop down list in a single cell in Excel

    I am trying to create a dependent drop down list for a High School. The User will select cell A1, Click on Hallway 3(for example), then the user will click on cell A1 again and then select the Room #, 325 (for example). The final result should be that cell A1 shows 325. I can create the first drop down list, but the second part is where I am having great trouble. I am using Excel 2010. Any help would be appreciated.   • Exchange 2007 automatically adding IP to block list

    This puzzled me. We have all mail directed to an ISP's spam filter, then delivered to SBS 2008 Exchange. One of the ISP's IP numbers suddenly appeared in the ES2007 block list, set to expire in 24 hours I think, so emails started bouncing. Quick look through the typically ponderous docs, and I can't see anything that says Exchange will auto-block an IP number, but nobody is admitting to adding it manually and I think it must have done. Anyone know about this or where it is configured? Obviously one could disable block lists completely but I'd like to know exactly why this happened.

    It has been another fantastic year for TechEd North America.  I always love my time here.  First, I have to give a huge thank you to Ineta for giving me the opportunity to work the Ineta booth and BOF’s (birds of a feather).   I can not even begin to list how many fantastic leaders in the .Net space and Developers from all over I have met through Ineta at this event.  It has been truly amazing and great fun!! New Orlean’s has been awesome.  The night life is hoppin’.  In addition to enjoying a few (too many??) of the local hurricanes in New Orleans, I have hung out with some of the coolest people  Deepesh Mohnani, David Poll, Viresh, Alan Stephens, Shawn Wildermuth, Greg Leonardo, Doug Seven, Chris Willams, David Carley and some of our southcentral hero’s Jeffery Palermo, Todd Anglin, Shawn Weisfeld, Randy Walker, The midnight DBA’s, Zeeshan Hirani, Dennis Bottjer just to name a few. A big thanks to Microsoft and everyone that has helped to put TechEd together.  I have loved hanging out with people from the Silverlight and Expression Teams and have learned a ton.  I am ramped up and ready to take all that knowledge back to my co-workers and my community.   • BUILD 2013 Sessions&ndash;Building Great Windows Phone UI in XAML

Shawn started out giving us a set of bad design/good design examples.  They very effectively showed how good design gives a sense of professionalism to your app that could determine if your wonderful idea actually makes money is DOA.   • R matrix handling expressions aren't evaluated in a function or a "for" loop - Column extract doesn't seem to work

    I have an R matrix named ddd. When I enter this, everything works fine: i <- 1 shapiro.test(ddd[,y]) ad.test(ddd[,y]) stem(ddd[,y]) print(y) The calls to Shapiro Wilk, Anderson Darling, and stem all work, and extract the same column. If I put this code in a "for" loop, the calls to Shapiro Wilk, and Anderson Darling stop working, while the the stem & leaf call and the print call continue to work. for (y in 7:10) { shapiro.test(ddd[,y]) ad.test(ddd[,y]) stem(ddd[,y]) print(y) } The decimal point is 1 digit(s) to the right of the | 0 | 0 0 | 899999 1 | 0 [1] 7 The same thing happens if I try and write a function. SW & AD do not work. The other calls do. D <- function (y) { + shapiro.test(ddd[,y]) + ad.test(ddd[,y]) + stem(ddd[,y]) + print(y) } D(9) The decimal point is at the | 9 | 000 9 | 10 | 00000 [1] 9 Why don't all the calls behave the same way?

  • Movie Library on Windows Media Center Extender

    I have a share setup on a NAS server with ripped versions of my DVDs. I pointed the Windows 7 version of the Windows Media Center Movie Library feature to the network share and it's able to find and play all my movies when running Windows Media Center from the local computer. When I try this on my Xbox 360 extender it never discovers any of my movies. Anyone able to get this to work?

  • Is it possible to load balance requests from a single source?

    In our application, Server A establishes a TCP connection with Server B, then it sends a large amount of requests to Server B over the TCP connection. The request message is XML-based. Server B needs to respond within a very short period, and it takes time to process the requests. So we hope a load balancer can be introduced and we can expedite the processing by using multiple Server B's. This is not a web application. I did some research but failed to find a similar application of load balancer. Can anyone tell me if there's a load balancer can help in our application?

  • Acer aspire 5520 power light blinks no boot

    My laptop was working fine last night, I hibernated it and went to sleep. Got up, pressed the power button. The power light comes on for 4 seconds and the hdd light blinked a few times, then it turned off for a second then repeats the process. The only way to stop this process/power down is to remove the AC and take out the battery. It does not even reach a boot screen, nothing shows up on the screen, fan does not start. People on this forum has the same problem but they suggest to put the laptop in a oven and heat it (reflow). What could be the problem? Is there another solution other than a reflow? I dont feel like putting my motherboard in the oven.

  • VirtualHost not using correct SSL certificate file

    I got a doozy of a setup with my virtual hosts and SSL. I found the problem, I need a solution. The problem is, the way I have my virtual hosts and server names setup, the LAST VirtualHost directive is associating the SSL certificate file with the ServerName regardless of IP address or ServerAlias. In this case, SSL on www.site1.com is using the cert file that is established on the last VirtualHost; www.site2.com. Is this how it is supposed to work? This seems to be happening because both of them are using the same ServerName; but I wouldn't think this would be a problem. I am specifically using the same ServerName for a purpose and I really can't change that. So I need a good fix for this. Yes, I could buy another UCC SSL and have them both on it but I have already done that; these are actually UCC SSLs already.   • NETKEY IPsec and ARP

    I'm wondering if I have the correct routing setup for an IPsec tunnel. I have control over the IPsec endpoints and the hosts connected to one side. These hosts are connecting to the tunnel so that they have access to the network on the other side of what I will call the IPsec server. I don't have control of the network upstream of this server. Normally, the IPsec server will not respond to ARP requests for the hosts on the other side of the tunnel. So when a packet arrives for one of my hosts the server gets ARP requests, but the upstream router gets no response, and cannot construct the ethernet frame to send me the packets. If I was using one of the swan stacks, I would have a separate interface, and I'd probably just need to turn on proxyarp, but I'm using NETKEY, which doesn't use a separate interface for the tunnel. To solve the problem for now, I have added an eth0.5 vlan to the IPsec server, turned on proxyarp for that interface, and added all routes my hosts addresses to that interface so that it will respond to those ARP requests (and will therefore get relevant packets routed to it). This works, but it feels wrong. What is the correct way to get the upstream router to send me the traffic for these hosts?

  • Cloud computing?

    I'm an analyst and intermediate programmer working for a consulting company. Sometimes we are doing some intensive computing in Excel which can be frustrating because we have slow computers. My company does not have enough money to buy everyone new computers right now. Is there a cloud computing service that allows me to login to a high performance virtual computer from remote desktop? We are not that technical so preferrably the computer is running Windows and I can run Excel and other applications from this computer. Thanks

  • SBS2003 to SBS2011 Migration - Installation Error

    Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 to 2011 Migration. I followed the Migration Guide from Microsoft and the source server had no errors when running the various tests prior to the migration. I have completed the destination server setup using the Answer File and the server is up and running. It all looks good, I can access Exchange and AD and the only problem is the error message when you log in stating that the setup did not complete and to check the logs. Because all looks good I am continuing the migration to the destination server. I also have to state that this client does not use Sharepoint at all. Do I have to redo everything?   • Windows Shares / NTFS permissions on folder redirection in Active Directory

    A client has folder redirection in AD setup on each user's Home Folder set to the Z:\ drive as \server\share\username. A Group Policy redirects the user's Documents to the user's Home Folder with the option 'Grant the user to exclusive rights to Documents' selected. The share on the server has permissions for the relevant user security group with 'Full Control', but each user's folder only have NTFS permissions only for 'CREATOR OWNER' and 'Domain Admins'. Why can the different users access other user's folders? I thought the most restrictive permissions applied effectively between the share and the NTFS permissions. Also, this setup has been like this for years, and this client recently updated all client computers to Windows 7. What is the best way to setup this redirection now? I assume only in Group Policy, also Basic Redirection - to create a folder for each user under the root path?

  • Cannot get Backup Exec to backup Exchange.

    I have a media server, Windows Server 2008 SP2 running Backup Exec 2010 R2. The SQL and other Windows agents work but I cannot backup the Exchange 2010 server running Windows Server2008 R2. I have the correct license for the Exchange agent - installed on the media server, and I installed Exchange Management tools on the media server. The 'Microsoft Exchange Database Availability Group' option is greyed out and if I select the server under a new backup job I can expand the 'Microsoft Information Store' option and see the mail database name but showing 0Kb. When I try to back it up it gives an error displaying: The job failed with the following error: Backup Exec attempted to back up an Exchange database according to the job settings. The database was not found, however. Update the selection list and run the job again.
