  • Sound from Ubuntu Server 10.04

    I feel like this should be a no brainer, but I just can't seem to figure it out. I am running Ubuntu Server 10.04 as a virtual machine in VMWare Fusion. I am simply trying to get there to be some sound that comes out of my laptop speakers. I have installed Alsa and MOC (followed these instructions, and it worked fine http://howto.blbosti.com/2010/03/ubuntu-server-install-alsa-sound-and-moc-music-on-console/). Especially using MOC, I can see that the song (an MP3) is playing, but I am not getting any sound out. lspci | grep audio gives me: 02:02.0 Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq ES1371 [AudioPCI-97] (rev 02) This doesn't seem like it should be that big of a deal, but I just can't seem to make it work. Any ideas?

    Any help on getting the sound to come through my lenovo t60 build in speakers, headphones, or mic would greatly be appreciated. The three buttons to increase, decrease sound seem to work. Bios has sound card enabled and the buttons beep when pressed. When going to Utube or playing music, no sound is heard.   • How does a one-man developer do its games' sounds?

    Before anything, that's not a "oh, where can I find resources?" question. Well, I've been curious about one thing in the indie games industry. For the development of the game, such tasks like game design, art, sketches, code programming and etc can be easily done by just one person. You can just take up a paper and pencil and you're a game designer. You can just take software like Photoshop or Paint and you're an artist, a scanner and you're a sketcher, a compiler and you're a programmer. For sound it's different. You may tell me: Well, follow the line, take a lot of instruments and record it. But all we know that things don't work this way. I can list up some changes for us: External noises are a big problem, sound effects can't be made with instruments, it can't sound like a recorded and clipped sound. Well I can imagine how they do this in large companies, with such big studios and etc. But to summarise, my question is: What's the best way for a one-man indie to do all its sound? Does he have to synthesize everything? Record and buy some crazy program for editing sounds?

  • Scheme - Memory System

    I am trying to make a memory system where you input something in a slot of memory. So what I am doing is making an Alist and the car of the pairs is the memory location and the cdr is the val. I need the program to understand two messages, Read and Write. Read just displaying the memory location selected and the val that is assigned to that location and write changes the val of the location or address. How do I make my code so it reads the location you want it to and write to the location you want it to? Feel free to test this yourself. Any help would be much appreciated.   • Scheme: what are the benefits of letrec?

    While reading "The Seasoned Schemer" I've begun to learn about letrec. I understand what it does (can be duplicated with a Y-Combinator) but the book is using it in lieu of recurring on the already defined function operating on arguments that remain static. An example of an old function using the defined function recurring on itself (nothing special): (define (substitute new old lat) (cond ((null? l) '()) ((eq? (car l) old) (cons new (substitute new old (cdr l)))) (else (cons (car l) (substitute new old (cdr l)))))) Now for an example of that same function but using letrec: (define (substitute new old lat) (letrec ((replace (lambda (l) (cond ((null? l) '()) ((eq? (car l) old) (cons new (replace (cdr l)))) (else (cons (car l) (replace (cdr l)))))))) (replace lat))) Aside from being slightly longer and more difficult to read I don't know why they are rewriting functions in the book to use letrec. Is there a speed enhancement when recurring over a static variable this way because you don't keep passing it?? Is this standard practice for functions with arguments that remain static but one argument that is reduced (such as recurring down the elements of a list)? Some input from more experienced Schemers/LISPers would help!

  • Can't access server sound card when vnc'd into ubuntu server

    I've set up my ubunutu 10 server with xfce, nxserver, and now tightvncserver so that I can control it remotely from my Windows 7 laptop. NX is working fine for remote access, but when I run (for example) exaile, no sound will be sent through the server's sound card. I installed tightvncserver and connected, but ran into the same problem. Exaile opens, sound isn't muted, I can see that sound cards are installed (via cat /proc/asound/cards), but I can't seem to get the remote sessions to access the server's sound card. Also, just to confirm that the sound card was working I hooked up a montior/keyboard to the server and opened a local xfce session. That worked fine. While I had the local session running, I was also able to open a remote session with NXClient and start exaile - which then successfully piped sound to the local card. After disconnecting the monitor/keyboard and moving the box back to its normal spot, though, I was not able to play sound via either an NX or VNC session. Does anyone have any suggestions? Surely it's possible to configure my remote sessions to pipe sound to the server's sound card, right? Or at least get xfce up and running without a monitor or keyboard but with access to the sound card so I can VNC into it? Thanks!

Channel map is set as follow: Front Left = Front left Center = Rear Left Front Right = Font Right Rear Right = LFE Rear Left = Center LFE = Rear Right I am testing the sound channel using speaker-test -c 2 -t wav Can some one tell me how I can remap easily? I have tried several possible changes to /etc/pulse/defaut.pa unsuccessfully.

    I am running a media center setup with the display through HDMI, powered by a NVIDIA card. I am using the proprietary NVIDIA drivers availabler through the additional drivers utility, on Xubuntu 11.10. In the mixer, I have all the volumes unmuted and turned up to 100%, but no sound through the HDMI. If I plug in speakers the nd comes through just fine. What can I do to make the sound go through the HDMI and to the TV?

    I just reinstalled ubuntu 12.04 from a DVD that came in the Ubuntu User magazine. I previously had 13.04 but had decided to revert back to the LTS. Now with 12.04 I have no sound when I try to play my music, I tried using Musique and also Rhythm Box they both show playing with the slider but no sound is heard except if the volume is all the way up you can hear a faint hiss or static.     I installed Skype 4.2 via PPA on my fresh 14.04 system. Skype itself makes notification sounds (though distorted), but when I am in a conversation, I receive neither sound, nor video. I tested it with my mom, she could hear and see me, but I couldn't see or hear her, and the sound test is quiet too. I didn't install any additional drivers yet, as I'm much of a newbie I'm not sure which ones to choose. Please let me know if you need any command outputs.
