• Windows 7 Home Premium or better on a Netbook?

  I have a Netbook with Windows XP Home. Processor is an Atom N280 (1.66 GHz) with 2 GB of RAM. I noticed that newer Netbooks come with Windows 7, but as Starter Edition (which kinda sucks). I wonder if there is a technical reason for using Windows 7 Starter? Or would a better edition (x86) perform equally well? I'm currently considering Home Premium, but BitLocker and Offline Files might have me get Ultimate.

• wcf rest starter kit 2 ICollectionService<ITem>

  I have created a Rest collection WCF Service using the starter kit. Everything is fine except i need to modify the OnGetItem(string id) to accept an additional parameter such that the URI becomes http://localhost/service.svc/1/5 where 1 = department id and 5 = employee id I can see the ICollectionService within the abstract class collection service base protected abstract TItem OnGetItem(string id); but I am not allowed to modify it. Does anyone have any ideas has to how I can make such a simple addition? Thanks in advance

• how to broadcast a PXE server like Trinity Rescue Kit

  I would like to set up a portable PXE server for diagnostic purposes. The issue is that I won't always have access to the DHCP server, or the router itself (sometimes a home router) doesn't have an easily accessible place to set the servername/file for broadcast. I know that Trinity Rescue Kit is able to broadcast its PXE server without its own DHCP server. Can anyone point me in the direction to set this up on my own (without Trinity)? Thanks.

  Ok I've just ran into this and I was only supposed to be checking my emails however I've ended up watching this (and not far off subscribing to TekPub). http://tekpub.com/production/starter Now these app is a great starting point, but it raises one issue for me and the development process I've been shown to follow (rightly or wrongly). There is no conversion from the LinqToSql object when passing data to the view. Are there any negitives to this? The main one I can see is with validation, does this cause issues when using MVC's built in validation as this is somthing we use extensivly. Because we are using the built in objects generated by LinqToSql how would one go about adding validation, like [Required(ErrorMessage="Name is Required")] public string Name {get;set;} Interested to understand the benifits of this methodology and any negitives that, should we take it on, experiance through the development process.

• GWT application not displaying data on Windows 7 Starter Edition

  I have a GWT application that works great on all platforms/browsers etc. Then we tried Windows 7 Starter Edition. For all browsers (Chrome, IE, Firefox) none of the dynamically displayed data appears in the application. We know that the machine is ok because Google Wave works fine and its also a GWT application. I'm at a loss. What could cause this to happen? I'd be grateful if you have a suggestion as to how to debug this. If so find the solution I'll post it.

  I have a WCF REST Starter Kit service. The type handled by the service is a subclass of a base class. For POST requests, the base class members are not correctly populated. The class hierarchy looks like this: [DataContract] public class BaseTreeItem { [DataMember] public String Id { get; set; } [DataMember] public String Description { get; set; } } [DataContract] public class Discipline : BaseTreeItem { ... } The service definition looks like: [WebHelp(Comment = "Retrieve a Discipline")] [WebGet(UriTemplate = "discipline?id={id}")] [OperationContract] public Discipline getDiscipline(String id) { ... } [WebHelp(Comment = "Create/Update/Delete a Discipline")] [OperationContract] [WebInvoke(Method = "POST", UriTemplate = "discipline")] public WCF_Result DisciplineMaintenance(Discipline discipline) { ... } Problem: While the GET works fine (returns the base class Id and Description), the POST does not populate Id and Description even though the XML contains the fields. • OSX pdf-kit vs Linux poppler or pdf/x

  I keep reading and hearing that the reason that there is no good pdf editing software for Linux is that the libraries are not as well developed. That is why there is no equivalent for Skim or Preview in Linux. I had a look a the pdf-kit documentation and the poppler documentation and they looked very similar to my admittedly non-technical view. Could someone explain to me why the OSX libraries (eg) are so much easier to write projects like Skim in than the linux ones. I'm not sure if the same applies to OSX projects to NVAlt, but it seems to be a common theme - I'd just like to understand what is behind the thesis that OSX is easier to code these projects in, and what would be involved in changing it. (I'm not disputing the value of Okular or Evince and the like, just noting that they don't have the richness of functionality of Skim, Preview or even things like Goodreader on the Ipad).

  Here's a crude representation of what I've got at home: floor 2 INTERNETS ---- MODEM/ROUTER ---- MY COMPUTER | floor 1 WIFI REPEATER ---- stuff | floor 0 more stuff TELEVISION Now, as part of our sat tv subscription we can get an additional service if we connect our decoder (located by TELEVISION obviously) to the internet. What they suggest is buying a Netgear 3DHD WIRELESS HOME THEATER NETWORKING KIT holy shit isn't my bullshit-o-meter flying high right now from the general buzzwordyness of this thing. What does this thing actually do that our existing wireless-enabled routers don't do? What's the point of having a third wifi router in the same house, this time only for one television? If I do decide to plunge €99 for this, should I connect it to the wifi repeater (which does not provide AAA quality internet, at least for all gaming purposes) or to my modem/router (risking issues with low signal?).

I know that Ember.debug() calls and alike are being filtered out for production builds, but I couldn't find out where/how that is implemented and if that same mechanism could be used to make my code only fire in production code.

• How Google Web Starter Kit serves adaptive image for mobile?

  My website weirdly (in a good way) serves smaller images when viewed on mobile. I wanted to know what cause this? As far as I know this is not the default behaviour, so I think it must be Google Web Starter Kit's doing.Here is the debug information when debugging on device. All images became 231 B size no matter how large it actually is. (On desktop debugging the size varies.) I tried using Google Web Starter Kit (https://github.com/google/web-starter-kit) recently. The tools in it are made of Ruby, Node.js, SASS and Gulp to help you 'build' website. Pre-build you can enjoy automatic reload because the Gulp script will watch all files for you. When build it will run various tools to minify HTML,CSS and compress images. According to this page https://developers.google.com/web/fundamentals/tools/build/build_site the gulp-imagemin was used. So I guess the imagemin is doing the mobile optimization for me? What kind of compression can serve automatically resized image on mobile? And why is the size 231 B? Is this related to my screen size?

  I am trying to start working with excel documents through the OpenXML SDK Spreadsheet API. But I havent found any good guides or even examples on how to create a xlsx file from scratch. Only how to open an existing document and modify it. I have been thinking on having a empty template document and make a copy of it an then begin my proccessing on it. But it doesent feel right. It might be easier but I not comfortable using a technique I dont feel that I understand "pretty" good atleast.   Is there a way to find out on session being started. Like for instance the session start event in the global.ascx file of .net. The requirement is to find the no. of visits the user has done on the site. Instead of checking each time during posts or gets to the server. Is there something in php to find out if the session is a new one. Zen framework is also used for the app.
