    My textarea is behaving very strange, when I click inside it .. the cursor appears there when I click, if I click on the middle of the textarea it appears there, and I'd like it to appear on the beginning wherever I click inside, like here on SO when asking question, wherever you click inside textarea it takes your cursor to the topmost left. What can I do to fix this?

    I have a textarea that I want to enable vertical scrolling. When I exceed the height of the textarea, it increases in size. The scroll bar does not appear. I want that a vertical scroll bar appears and the users are not able to resize the text area as well. I searched online and tried solutions posted, but none seem to work.     I would like to change the value of a textarea when hovering over a link. I am not very proficient at javascript and do not quite understand the intricacies of 'this.' and 'document.' etc.. Currently I have a textarea 'info' that on page load is unpopulated and two links that should change its value. I saw few jquery plugins that resize the textarea but is there any solution with which I can resize parent div too? There is no need for live resizing, resizing just once when page is loaded is preferred as the data is already populated in it. Thank You.

The function is called by onKeyUp in the textarea. If the .find is swapped out for a .hiddenDiv the height change is reflected properly.

    Hey everyone, I have a very simple Swing GUI with just a JTetxtArea. I am trying to programmatically select a part of text using: textArea.select(startSelection,endSelection); This work. However as soon as I add some other components to the GUI I do not see selection anymore frame.getContentPane().add(button); frame.getContentPane().add(textArea); textArea.select(startSelection,endSelection); I suspect that during layouting the gui, some event causes the text to be deselected. Am I right? And could anybody suggest a solution? My goal is to have a program which displays a text, and allows the user to input start and end selection position, and a selection appears between these two position. Thank you.

  • GWT: creating a text widget for highly customized data entry

    I'm trying to implement a kind of "guided typing" widget for data entry, in which the user's text entry is highly controlled and filtered. When the user types a particular character I need to intercept and filter it before displaying it in the widget. Imagine if you will, a Unix shell embedded as a webapp; that's the kind of thing I'm trying to implement. I've tried two approaches. In the first, I extend a TextArea, and add a KeyPressHandler to filter the characters. This works, but the browser-provided spelling correction is totally inappropriate, and I don't see how to turn it off. I've tried: DOM.setElementProperty(textArea.getElement(), "spellcheck", "false"); But that seems to have no effect- I still get the red underlines over "typos". In the second approach I use a FocusWidget to get KeyPress events, and a separate Label or HTML widget to present the filtered characters back to the user. This avoids the spelling correction issue, but since the FocusWidget is not a TextArea, the browser tends to intercept certain typed characters for internal use; e.g. FireFox will use the "/" character to begin a "Quick Find" on the page, and hitting Backspace will load the previous web page. Is there a better way to accomplish what I'm trying to do?

  • JQuery val() does not work for textarea in Opera

    I am displaying a modal dialog using jQuery. This dialog has a textarea control on it. But on submitting this dialog, the value of this textarea is not recognized by jQyery for some reason. It always comes blank. This works perfectly in other browsers. I put alert to display the value but it looks blank. Can anybody help me in this regards?     I am getting a file "abc.txt" from server and dispaying it in a text area for editing. <div id="filecontents"> <textarea> CONTENTS OF FILE LARGER THAN 10KB </textarea> </div> The contents of the file are potentially large. The user will edit the textarea and add/delete text from any part(not just the end). I want to send ONLY the changes to the server for patching. How do I accomplish this?. Is there a javascript version of the popular linux command(diff). John Resig's diff code may not work as, for me, it will involve additional parsing on server side. Thanks!

I've used a DocumentFilter so as to allow only 160 characters to be typed in the textarea but now, I want the size of the textarea to be constant. it goes on increasing if I keep writing on the same line without pressing 'enter' key or even when I keep on pressing only 'enter' key. I tried once using 'scrollbar' too but the problem remains same. Suggest me something over this.
