  • Why is my CPU being used while doing nothing?

    - by Jop
    I have installed Ubuntu GNOME in BIOS mode on my MacBook (BIOS mode so that the proprietary NVIDIA drivers work. I need them for gaming.). For some reason, a lot of CPU is being used while not really doing anything. It swings between 20-30% on both cores, usually. But when I look at the list of processes and sort by CPU usage, I do not see anything special. No processes intensively doing anything. How can I fix this? EDIT: Output of top command. jop@jop-MacBook:~$ top top - 17:08:02 up 41 min, 2 users, load average: 0,51, 0,69, 0,95 Tasks: 202 total, 2 running, 200 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie %Cpu(s): 11,9 us, 5,8 sy, 0,0 ni, 80,3 id, 0,5 wa, 0,0 hi, 1,5 si, 0,0 st KiB Mem: 7908316 total, 2919940 used, 4988376 free, 153248 buffers KiB Swap: 3906244 total, 0 used, 3906244 free, 1326544 cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 3785 root 20 0 195m 82m 26m S 22,9 1,1 2:43.77 Xorg 4429 jop 20 0 1543m 150m 60m S 7,3 1,9 1:26.26 compiz 4198 jop 20 0 633m 21m 11m S 1,7 0,3 0:04.96 unity-panel-ser 7425 jop 20 0 564m 18m 12m S 1,7 0,2 0:00.84 gnome-terminal 7019 jop 20 0 806m 89m 46m S 1,0 1,2 0:10.01 chrome 7323 jop 20 0 966m 93m 23m S 1,0 1,2 0:06.85 chrome 6742 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0,7 0,0 0:00.43 kworker/0:3 3 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0,3 0,0 0:06.01 ksoftirqd/0 7008 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0,3 0,0 0:00.27 kworker/1:3 7302 jop 20 0 972m 96m 28m S 0,3 1,2 0:06.32 chrome 7310 jop 20 0 382m 63m 39m S 0,3 0,8 0:00.34 chrome 7498 jop 20 0 24840 1600 1120 R 0,3 0,0 0:00.22 top 1 root 20 0 27176 2944 1412 S 0,0 0,0 0:01.58 init 2 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0,0 0,0 0:00.00 kthreadd 5 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0,0 0,0 0:00.00 kworker/0:0H 6 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0,0 0,0 0:00.00 kworker/u4:0 7 root rt 0 0 0 0 S 0,0 0,0 0:02.04 migration/0 Even when xorg isn't so busy like when I copied, CPU usage is higher then what the processes use.

  • Outlook 2010 Reminders - Can't dismiss or snooze.

    - by TomatoSandwich
I seem to have encountered a zombie reminder that doesn't want to die. A few weeks ago I had an issue where I had a reminder from weeks gone by pop up in my Reminder window in Outlook 2010. Due in: 2 weeks overdue. Weird, I thought. So I did the usual 'Dismiss'. 2 seconds later: "1 Reminder, Due in 2 weeks overdue". Weird, I thought. So I tried snoozing it. Not 2 seconds later: "1 Reminder, Due in 2 weeks overdue". Ok, this is getting weird. Let's try 'Dismiss All'. "1 Reminder, Due in 2 weeks overdue". Fine, fine, you win Outlook. Let's open the item and delete it. "1 Reminder, Due in **3** weeks overdue". Ah, now the previous reminder in the series is popping up. Let's delete that one too. "1 Reminder, Due in **4** weeks overdue". FUUUUU-- I ended up having to delete all past occurances of a weekly reminder before the reminder removed itself. It's now a few weeks later, and what do I see? "1 Reminder, Due in 2 weeks overdue". Does anyone know if this is a known bug in Outlook 2010 Beta, where recurring events with reminders start zombifying themselves, and won't stop reminding me they exist til I decapitate (delete) them entirely?

  • High load average, low CPU and IO (Centos 5.7)

    - by Ben
    A Drupal 7 site with CiviCRM, after running smoothly for a year on a 1&1 VPS suddenly became unresponsive. Now pages eventually load, but can take more than a minute. Looking at resource use in Virtuozzo, the load average carries a warning, and has remained above 1. While I understand this isn't particularly high, this is a change from when the site was working. Here is a typical snapshot of top: top - 03:10:32 up 3:21, 1 user, load average: 1.16, 1.22, 1.30 Tasks: 43 total, 1 running, 42 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 0.1%us, 0.1%sy, 0.1%ni, 99.7%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 2097152k total, 1015112k used, 1082040k free, 0k buffers Swap: 0k total, 0k used, 0k free, 0k cached CPU idle level never seems to go much below 70%. wa is virtually always at 0. There appears to be lots of free memory. And here is some vmstat output, again showign wa at 0, plenty of free memory, and an idle CPU: procs -----------memory---------- ---swap-- -----io---- --system-- -----cpu------ r b swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id wa st 2 0 0 1100872 0 0 0 0 2783 23672 0 538 1 0 99 0 0 1 0 0 1100872 0 0 0 0 0 16 0 101754 0 0 100 0 0 0 0 0 1100872 0 0 0 0 0 17 0 103133 0 0 100 0 0 0 0 0 1100872 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 102080 0 0 100 0 0 1 0 0 1100872 0 0 0 0 0 6 0 99881 0 0 100 0 0 0 0 0 1100872 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 105187 0 0 100 0 0 I've spoken to 1&1 but they don't have any ideas as to what could be causing the high load average. Instead they suggested an upgrade :) I've looked for processes that might be causing this, examined MySQL showprocesslist, and restarted the container with no result. Does anyone have more troubleshooting suggestions or insights?

  • SSH dynamic port forwarding, "Connection refused"

    - by crodjer
I am trying to do dynamic portforwarding using openssh through a remote computer following this command: ssh -D 6789 rohan@<remote_ip> -p <remote_port> This should set up a socks server on my comp as I assume. The machine has been sending a lot of email through postfix, so this could be related. Anyone know why so many may have spun up? Are they safe to kill? Thanks!

  • bash script with permanent ssh connection

    - by samuelf
I use a bash script which runs /usr/bin/ssh -f -N -T -L8888:127.0.0.1:3306 [email protected] However, when I run the bash script, it waits.. I see the connection coming up but the script doesn't exit.. it's like it's waiting for the SSH process to finish, because when I manually kill it the bash script finishes as well. Any ideas how to resolve this? • Opening an existing process

I am using Eclipse in Linux through a remote connection (xrdp). My internet got disconnected, so I got disconnected from the server while eclipse was running. Now I logged in again, and I do the "top" command I can see that eclipse is running and still under my user name. Is there some way I can bring that process back into my view (I do not want to kill it because I am in the middle of checking in a large swath of code)? A reboot fixed this on an earlier machine, but I haven't yet tried it on this one. I have tried top several times, and so am sure that I haven't accidentally pressed '<' or '' to sort by a different column. Sorting the process list by all of the available columns, stills shows 0% CPU for all displayed processes. What is going on? If this a kernel bug? Update: If I use top -p <PID> for a know, busy process, top still displays 0% CPU for that process.

  • load average in top and procs in vmstat

    - by Mingfei.hua
As far as I know, the load average in top is the numbers of precess(threads) in running or uninterrupted sleep status, So it should be equal to (procs-r +1 )+ procs-b in vmstat, but in practice, this two number always have big gap. We have several machines on Amazon (ec2) of the type c1.xlarge with 16 cpus, running the Amazon AMI. • Apache process consumes too much CPU

    - by Niro
I have an ubuntu apache/php server running php doing appx 100 hits/sec and a PHP cron running in the background. I get occasionally high CPU load on one of the Apache processes which stays high regardless of traffic or cron activity. It seems to me that its stuck in some kind of loop or something. • Debian x86_64 + Nginx + PHP5-FPM optimization

    - by Olal'a
    I used to have a VPS (512MB) from Linode and I was running nginx + php5-fpm (which comes with php5.3.3) on Debian Lenny (i686). The total memory usage was about 90-100MB. Now I have another VPS (different hosting company) and I also run nginx + php5-fpm on Debian Lenny (x86_64). The system is 64-bit, so the memory usage is higher now, about 210-230MB, which I think is too much. Here is my php5-fpm.conf: pm = dynamic pm.max_children = 5 pm.start_servers = 2 pm.min_spare_servers = 2 pm.max_spare_servers = 5 pm.max_requests = 300 That's what top command tells me: top - 15:36:58 up 3 days, 16:05, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 Tasks: 209 total, 1 running, 208 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 0.0%us, 0.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 99.9%id, 0.1%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 532288k total, 469628k used, 62660k free, 28760k buffers Swap: 1048568k total, 408k used, 1048160k free, 210060k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 22806 www-data 20 0 178m 67m 31m S 1 13.1 0:05.02 php5-fpm 8980 mysql 20 0 241m 55m 7384 S 0 10.6 2:42.42 mysqld 22807 www-data 20 0 162m 43m 22m S 0 8.3 0:04.84 php5-fpm 22808 www-data 20 0 160m 41m 23m S 0 8.0 0:04.68 php5-fpm 25102 www-data 20 0 151m 30m 21m S 0 5.9 0:00.80 php5-fpm 10849 root 20 0 44100 8352 1808 S 0 1.6 0:03.16 munin-node 22805 root 20 0 145m 4712 1472 S 0 0.9 0:00.16 php5-fpm 21859 root 20 0 66168 3248 2540 S 1 0.6 0:00.02 sshd 21863 root 20 0 66028 3188 2548 S 0 0.6 0:00.06 sshd 3956 www-data 20 0 31756 3052 928 S 0 0.6 0:06.42 nginx 3954 www-data 20 0 31712 3036 928 S 0 0.6 0:06.74 nginx 3951 www-data 20 0 31712 3008 928 S 0 0.6 0:06.42 nginx 3957 www-data 20 0 31688 2992 928 S 0 0.6 0:06.56 nginx 3950 www-data 20 0 31676 2980 928 S 0 0.6 0:06.72 nginx 3955 www-data 20 0 31552 2896 928 S 0 0.5 0:06.56 nginx 3953 www-data 20 0 31552 2888 928 S 0 0.5 0:06.42 nginx 3952 www-data 20 0 31544 2880 928 S 0 0.5 0:06.60 nginx So, the question is there any way to use less memory? • How to avoid sshfs freezing?

    - by Andreas Hagen
So the issue is this: I've installed sshfs on Ubuntu 12.04 and I'm trying to connect to a couple of remote servers. So initially the mount seams successful. Sometimes Gnome even picks it up and displays the "new device found" box at the bottom of the screen. but from here on there is not much that works. Or at least not any more. The first couple of times i connected it seamed to work fine, and I was able to transfer some files, then i disconnected using fusermount -u <folder> and after reconnecting a little later the trouble started. Now after executing sshfs -o ServerAliveInterval=15 -o reconnect -C -o workaround=all -o idmap=user root@<host>:/ <folder>, when I change directory into the mount-point, the shell just freezes. Strangely ls -al <folder> works when listing just the root of the remote system, but nothing more. Also every file-explorer I've tried freezes just like cd <folder>. To me it seamed like there was some kind of zombie thread or something hanging around my system, due to the fact that it did work the first time, so I have tried rebooting but no luck. sshfs -V gives this: SSHFS version 2.3 FUSE library version: 2.8.6 fusermount version: 2.8.6 using FUSE kernel interface version 7.12 So yea, any ideas?
