  • Why are my Opteron cores running at only 75% capacity each? (25% CPU idle)

    - by Tim Cooper
    We've just taken delivery of a powerful 32-core AMD Opteron server with 128Gb. We have 2 x 6272 CPU's with 16 cores each. We are running a big long-running java task on 30 threads. We have the NUMA optimisations for Linux and java turned on. Our Java threads are mainly using objects that are private to that thread, sometimes reading memory that other threads will be reading, and very very occasionally writing or locking shared objects. We can't explain why the CPU cores are 25% idle. Below is a dump of "top": top - 23:06:38 up 1 day, 23 min, 3 users, load average: 10.84, 10.27, 9.62 Tasks: 676 total, 1 running, 675 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 64.5%us, 1.3%sy, 0.0%ni, 32.9%id, 1.3%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 132138168k total, 131652664k used, 485504k free, 92340k buffers Swap: 5701624k total, 230252k used, 5471372k free, 13444344k cached ... top - 22:37:39 up 23:54, 3 users, load average: 7.83, 8.70, 9.27 Tasks: 678 total, 1 running, 677 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu0 : 75.8%us, 2.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 22.2%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu1 : 77.2%us, 1.3%sy, 0.0%ni, 21.5%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu2 : 77.3%us, 1.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 21.7%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu3 : 77.8%us, 1.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 21.2%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu4 : 76.9%us, 2.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 21.1%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu5 : 76.3%us, 2.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 21.7%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu6 : 12.6%us, 3.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 84.4%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu7 : 8.6%us, 2.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 89.4%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu8 : 77.0%us, 2.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 21.1%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu9 : 77.0%us, 2.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 21.1%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu10 : 77.6%us, 1.7%sy, 0.0%ni, 20.8%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu11 : 75.7%us, 2.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 21.4%id, 1.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu12 : 76.6%us, 2.3%sy, 0.0%ni, 21.1%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu13 : 76.6%us, 2.3%sy, 0.0%ni, 21.1%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu14 : 76.2%us, 2.6%sy, 0.0%ni, 15.9%id, 5.3%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu15 : 76.6%us, 2.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 21.5%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu16 : 73.6%us, 2.6%sy, 0.0%ni, 23.8%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu17 : 74.5%us, 2.3%sy, 0.0%ni, 23.2%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu18 : 73.9%us, 2.3%sy, 0.0%ni, 23.8%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu19 : 72.9%us, 2.6%sy, 0.0%ni, 24.4%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu20 : 72.8%us, 2.6%sy, 0.0%ni, 24.5%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu21 : 72.7%us, 2.3%sy, 0.0%ni, 25.0%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu22 : 72.5%us, 2.6%sy, 0.0%ni, 24.8%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu23 : 73.0%us, 2.3%sy, 0.0%ni, 24.7%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu24 : 74.7%us, 2.7%sy, 0.0%ni, 22.7%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu25 : 74.5%us, 2.6%sy, 0.0%ni, 22.8%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu26 : 73.7%us, 2.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 24.3%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu27 : 74.1%us, 2.3%sy, 0.0%ni, 23.6%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu28 : 74.1%us, 2.3%sy, 0.0%ni, 23.6%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu29 : 74.0%us, 2.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 24.0%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu30 : 73.2%us, 2.3%sy, 0.0%ni, 24.5%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Cpu31 : 73.1%us, 2.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 24.9%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 132138168k total, 131711704k used, 426464k free, 88336k buffers Swap: 5701624k total, 229572k used, 5472052k free, 13745596k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 13865 root 20 0 122g 112g 3.1g S 2334.3 89.6 20726:49 java 27139 jayen 20 0 15428 1728 952 S 2.6 0.0 0:04.21 top 27161 sysadmin 20 0 15428 1712 940 R 1.0 0.0 0:00.28 top 33 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0.3 0.0 0:06.24 ksoftirqd/7 131 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0.3 0.0 0:09.52 events/0 1858 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0.3 0.0 1:35.14 kondemand/0 A dump of the java stack confirms that none of the threads are anywhere near the few places where locks are used, nor are they anywhere near any disk or network i/o. I had trouble finding a clear explanation of what 'top' means by "idle" versus "wait", but I get the impression that "idle" means "no more threads that need to be run" but this doesn't make sense in our case. We're using a "Executors.newFixedThreadPool(30)". There are a large number of tasks pending and each task lasts for 10 seconds or so. I suspect that the explanation requires a good understanding of NUMA. Is the "idle" state what you see when a CPU is waiting for a non-local access? If not, then what is the explanation?

  • Windows Service suddenly doing nothing

    - by TB
Hi, My windows service is using a Thread (not a timer) which is always looping and sleeps for 1 second every loop using : evet.WaitOne(interval); When I start the service it works fine and I can see in the task manager that it is running, consuming and releasing memory, consuming processor ... etc that is all normal, but after a while (random amount of time) the service simply stops!! it is still there in the task manager but it is not consuming any processor work now and its consumption to the memory is not changing. it simply (died but still there in the task manager like a Zombie). I know that many exceptions might have happened during running the service (it is really doing many things) but all those exceptions are handled in Try catch blocks, so why is my "always looping" thread stops ??? This thread also logs every time he loops, when he is freezig in this way he is not logging anything (of course)

  • double fork using vfork

    - by Oren S
HI I am writing a part of a server which should dispatch some other child processes. Because I want to wait on some of the processes, and dispatch others without waiting for completion, I use double fork for the second kind of processes (thus avoiding the zombie processes). Problem is, my server holds a lot of memory, so forking takes a long time (even the copy-on-write fork used in Linux which copies only the paging tables) I want to replace the fork() with vfork(), and it's easy for the second fork (as it only calls execve() in the child), but I couldn't find any way I can replace the first one. Does anyone know how I can do that? Thanks! The server is a linux (RH5U4), written in C++.

I used scaffold form url:string and included the gem share_counts. rails c: f = form.first ShareCounts.twitter f.url works! but... I have trouble to write the controller and the view! For you experienced railies this is probably a silly question, and probably only 5 lines of code, but for me thats a big step learning RoR! I am very thankful if someone could help how I can show the count next to the "url" field. Thank you so much!!! joh

  • Why is my CPU being used while doing nothing?

    - by Jop
I have installed Ubuntu GNOME in BIOS mode on my MacBook (BIOS mode so that the proprietary NVIDIA drivers work. I need them for gaming.). For some reason, a lot of CPU is being used while not really doing anything. It swings between 20-30% on both cores, usually. But when I look at the list of processes and sort by CPU usage, I do not see anything special. No processes intensively doing anything. How can I fix this? • Outlook 2010 Reminders - Can't dismiss or snooze.

    - by TomatoSandwich
I seem to have encountered a zombie reminder that doesn't want to die. A few weeks ago I had an issue where I had a reminder from weeks gone by pop up in my Reminder window in Outlook 2010. Due in: 2 weeks overdue. Weird, I thought. So I did the usual 'Dismiss'. 2 seconds later: "1 Reminder, Due in 2 weeks overdue". Weird, I thought. So I tried snoozing it. Not 2 seconds later: "1 Reminder, Due in 2 weeks overdue". Ok, this is getting weird. Let's try 'Dismiss All'. "1 Reminder, Due in 2 weeks overdue". Fine, fine, you win Outlook. Let's open the item and delete it. "1 Reminder, Due in **3** weeks overdue". Ah, now the previous reminder in the series is popping up. Let's delete that one too. "1 Reminder, Due in **4** weeks overdue". FUUUUU-- I ended up having to delete all past occurances of a weekly reminder before the reminder removed itself. It's now a few weeks later, and what do I see? "1 Reminder, Due in 2 weeks overdue". Does anyone know if this is a known bug in Outlook 2010 Beta, where recurring events with reminders start zombifying themselves, and won't stop reminding me they exist til I decapitate (delete) them entirely?

  • High load average, low CPU and IO (Centos 5.7)

    - by Ben
    A Drupal 7 site with CiviCRM, after running smoothly for a year on a 1&1 VPS suddenly became unresponsive. Now pages eventually load, but can take more than a minute. Looking at resource use in Virtuozzo, the load average carries a warning, and has remained above 1. While I understand this isn't particularly high, this is a change from when the site was working. Here is a typical snapshot of top: top - 03:10:32 up 3:21, 1 user, load average: 1.16, 1.22, 1.30 Tasks: 43 total, 1 running, 42 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 0.1%us, 0.1%sy, 0.1%ni, 99.7%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 2097152k total, 1015112k used, 1082040k free, 0k buffers Swap: 0k total, 0k used, 0k free, 0k cached CPU idle level never seems to go much below 70%. wa is virtually always at 0. There appears to be lots of free memory. And here is some vmstat output, again showign wa at 0, plenty of free memory, and an idle CPU: procs -----------memory---------- ---swap-- -----io---- --system-- -----cpu------ r b swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id wa st 2 0 0 1100872 0 0 0 0 2783 23672 0 538 1 0 99 0 0 1 0 0 1100872 0 0 0 0 0 16 0 101754 0 0 100 0 0 0 0 0 1100872 0 0 0 0 0 17 0 103133 0 0 100 0 0 0 0 0 1100872 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 102080 0 0 100 0 0 1 0 0 1100872 0 0 0 0 0 6 0 99881 0 0 100 0 0 0 0 0 1100872 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 105187 0 0 100 0 0 I've spoken to 1&1 but they don't have any ideas as to what could be causing the high load average. Instead they suggested an upgrade :) I've looked for processes that might be causing this, examined MySQL showprocesslist, and restarted the container with no result. Does anyone have more troubleshooting suggestions or insights?

How do I interpret this conflicting output from top? top - 13:55:26 up 3:35, 4 users, load average: 3.03, 2.59, 2.48 Tasks: 178 total, 1 running, 177 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 16.0%us, 79.7%sy, 0.0%ni, 0.0%id, 0.0%wa, 1.3%hi, 3.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 509364k total, 479108k used, 30256k free, 3092k buffers Swap: 2096440k total, 58380k used, 2038060k free, 225116k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 7708 jnet 20 0 480m 109m 17m S 18.4 22.1 21:59.14 thunderbird-bin 4615 jnet 20 0 5488 1268 1040 S 2.3 0.2 5:00.03 nx-rootless-ses 7124 jnet 20 0 56688 27m 4812 S 2.0 5.5 6:35.09 nxagent 6724 nx 20 0 9628 1400 636 S 1.6 0.3 3:26.59 sshd 30106 root 20 0 2544 1236 908 R 0.7 0.2 0:00.33 top 19 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0.3 0.0 0:22.45 ata/0 38 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0.3 0.0 0:05.53 scsi_eh_1 345 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0.3 0.0 0:04.72 kjournald 1719 root 20 0 3260 1192 944 S 0.3 0.2 0:17.36 vmware-guestd 1 root 20 0 2804 1356 940 S 0.0 0.3 0:01.99 init 2 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.01 kthreadd 3 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 migration/0 4 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.15 ksoftirqd/0 5 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/0 ... • bash script with permanent ssh connection

    - by samuelf
I use a bash script which runs /usr/bin/ssh -f -N -T -L8888:127.0.0.1:3306 [email protected] However, when I run the bash script, it waits.. I see the connection coming up but the script doesn't exit.. it's like it's waiting for the SSH process to finish, because when I manually kill it the bash script finishes as well. Any ideas how to resolve this? UPDATE: I have croned this script.. and the cron process is the one that becomes a zombie.. the actual scripts runs just fine, sorry about that, with ps -auxf I get: root 597 0.0 0.7 2372 912 ? • Opening an existing process

    - by Grasper
I am using Eclipse in Linux through a remote connection (xrdp). My internet got disconnected, so I got disconnected from the server while eclipse was running. Now I logged in again, and I do the "top" command I can see that eclipse is running and still under my user name. Is there some way I can bring that process back into my view (I do not want to kill it because I am in the middle of checking in a large swath of code)? It doesnt show up on the bottom panel after I logged in again. A reboot fixed this on an earlier machine, but I haven't yet tried it on this one. I have tried top several times, and so am sure that I haven't accidentally pressed '<' or '' to sort by a different column. Sorting the process list by all of the available columns, stills shows 0% CPU for all displayed processes. What is going on? If this a kernel bug? Update: If I use top -p <PID> for a know, busy process, top still displays 0% CPU for that process.
