  • How to optimize this SQL query for a rectangular region?

    - by Andrew B.
I'm trying to optimize the following query, but it's not clear to me what index or indexes would be best. I'm storing tiles in a two-dimensional plane and querying for rectangular regions of that plane. The table has, for the purposes of this question, the following columns: id: a primary key integer world_id: an integer foreign key which acts as a namespace for a subset of tiles tileY: the Y-coordinate integer tileX: the X-coordinate integer value: the contents of this tile, a varchar if it matters. I have the following indexes: "ywot_tile_pkey" PRIMARY KEY, btree (id) "ywot_tile_world_id_key" UNIQUE, btree (world_id, "tileY", "tileX") "ywot_tile_world_id" btree (world_id) And this is the query I'm trying to optimize: ywot=> EXPLAIN ANALYZE SELECT * FROM "ywot_tile" WHERE ("world_id" = 27685 AND "tileY" <= 6 AND "tileX" <= 9 AND "tileX" >= -2 AND "tileY" >= -1 ); QUERY PLAN ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bitmap Heap Scan on ywot_tile (cost=11384.13..149421.27 rows=65989 width=168) (actual time=79.646..80.075 rows=96 loops=1) Recheck Cond: ((world_id = 27685) AND ("tileY" <= 6) AND ("tileY" >= (-1)) AND ("tileX" <= 9) AND ("tileX" >= (-2))) -> Bitmap Index Scan on ywot_tile_world_id_key (cost=0.00..11367.63 rows=65989 width=0) (actual time=79.615..79.615 rows=125 loops=1) Index Cond: ((world_id = 27685) AND ("tileY" <= 6) AND ("tileY" >= (-1)) AND ("tileX" <= 9) AND ("tileX" >= (-2))) Total runtime: 80.194 ms So the world is fixed, and we are querying for a rectangular region of tiles. Some more information that might be relevant: All the tiles for a queried region may or may not be present The height and width of a queried rectangle are typically about 10x10-20x20 For any given (world, X) or (world, Y) pair, there may be an unbounded number of matching tiles, but the worst case is currently around 10,000, and typically there are far fewer. New tiles are created far less frequently than existing ones are updated (changing the 'value'), and that itself is far less frequent that just reading as in the query above. The only thing I can think of would be to index on (world, X) and (world, Y). My guess is that the database would be able to take those two sets and intersect them. The problem is that there is a potentially unbounded number of matches for either for either of those. Is there some other kind of index that would be more appropriate?

  • Optimising movement on hex grid

    - by Mloren
I am making a turn based hex-grid game. The player selects units and moves them across the hex grid. Each tile in the grid is of a particular terrain type (eg desert, hills, mountains, etc) and each unit type has different abilities when it comes to moving over the terrain (e.g. some can move over mountains easily, some with difficulty and some not at all). Each unit has a movement value and each tile takes a certain amount of movement based on its terrain type and the unit type. E.g it costs a tank 1 to move over desert, 4 over swamp and cant move at all over mountains. Where as a flying unit moves over everything at a cost of 1. The issue I have is that when a unit is selected, I want to highlight an area around it showing where it can move, this means working out all the possible paths through the surrounding hexes, how much movement each path will take and lighting up the tiles based on that information. I got this working with a recursive function and found it took too long to calculate, I moved the function into a thread so that it didn't block the game but still it takes around 2 seconds for the thread to calculate the moveable area for a unit with a move of 8. Its over a million recursions which obviously is problematic. I'm wondering if anyone has an clever ideas on how I can optimize this problem. Here's the recursive function I'm currently using (its C# btw): private void CalcMoveGridRecursive(int nCenterIndex, int nMoveRemaining) { //List of the 6 tiles adjacent to the center tile int[] anAdjacentTiles = m_ThreadData.m_aHexData[nCenterIndex].m_anAdjacentTiles; foreach(int tileIndex in anAdjacentTiles) { //make sure this adjacent tile exists if(tileIndex == -1) continue; //How much would it cost the unit to move onto this adjacent tile int nMoveCost = m_ThreadData.m_anTerrainMoveCost[(int)m_ThreadData.m_aHexData[tileIndex].m_eTileType]; if(nMoveCost != -1 && nMoveCost <= nMoveRemaining) { //Make sure the adjacent tile isnt already in our list. if(!m_ThreadData.m_lPassableTiles.Contains(tileIndex)) m_ThreadData.m_lPassableTiles.Add(tileIndex); //Now check the 6 tiles surrounding the adjacent tile we just checked (it becomes the new center). CalcMoveGridRecursive(tileIndex, nMoveRemaining - nMoveCost); } } } At the end of the recursion, m_lPassableTiles contains a list of the indexes of all the tiles that the unit can possibly reach and they are made to glow. This all works, it just takes too long. Does anyone know a better approach to this?

  • Why is "copy and paste" of code dangerous?

    - by Yigang Wu
Sometimes, my boss will complain us why we need so long time to implement a feature. Actually, the feature has been implemented in other AP before, you just need to copy and paste codes from there. The cost should be low. It's really a hard question, because copy and paste codes is not a easy thing from my point. Do you have any good reason to explain your boss who doesn't know technology?

  • Source Control at home

    - by Sash
I am trying to setup a dev environment at home. My primary development environment is VS.NET 2008 (now it is VS 2010 Premium) with SQL Server 2008. Objectives / Requirements : - Should be simple and lightweight - Should have a Visual Studio plugin (cost should be less than $50, if its not free) - should work just fine with continuous integration systems like TFS and CruiseControl.NET - VSS is not an option. Thanks in advance, SK

  • .net: does anyone know a free library to download nntp messages

    - by stighy
hi folks, i'm using ip*works for download newsgroup message and insert them into a database... ipworks is "comfortable" to use because it automatically split nntp data return into different object (or variable). So i've "author" "date" "topic" "messagge" already splitted to my use. However ipworks isn't free and it cost a lot for my use.. so i'm asking you some component or code snippet to use to download and "manage" nntp messagges. Thanks in advance and regards!

  • How can I programmatically add triggers to an ASP.NET UpdatePanel?

    - by scottm
    I am trying to write a quote generator. For each product, there are a set of options. I want to dynamically add a drop down list for each option, and then have their SelectedIndexChanged events all wired up to update the quote cost. I am not having any trouble adding the DropDownList controls to my UpdatePanel, but I can't seem to wire up the events. After the page loads, the drop downs are there, with their data, but changing them does not call the SelectedIndexChanged event handler, nor does the QuoteUpdatePanel update. I have something like this: QuotePanel.ASCX <asp:ScriptManager ID="ScriptManager" runat="server" /> <asp:UpdatePanel ID="QuoteUpdatePanel" runat="server" ChildrenAsTriggers="true"> <ContentTemplate> Cost: <asp:Label ID="QuoteCostLabel" runat="server" /> <fieldset id="standard-options"> <legend>Standard Options</legend> <asp:UpdatePanel ID="StandardOptionsUpdatePanel" runat="server" ChildrenAsTriggers="true" UpdateMode="Conditional"> <ContentTemplate> </ContentTemplate> </asp:UpdatePanel> </fieldset> </ContentTemplate> </asp:UpdatePanel> The code to add the dropdowns and the event they are to be wire up for: protected void PopluateUpdatePanel(IQuoteProperty standardOptions) foreach (IQuoteProperty standardOp in standardOptions) { QuotePropertyDropDownList<IQuoteProperty> dropDownList = new QuotePropertyDropDownList<IQuoteProperty>(standardOp); dropDownList.SelectedIndexChanged += new EventHandler(QuotePropertyDropDown_SelectedIndexChanged); dropDownList.ID = standardOp.GetType().Name + "DropDownList"; ScriptManager.RegisterAsyncPostBackControl(dropDownList); Label propertyLabel = new Label() {Text = standardOp.Title, CssClass = "quote-property-label"}; this.StandardOptionsUpdatePanel.ContentTemplateContainer.Controls.Add(propertyLabel); this.StandardOptionsUpdatePanel.ContentTemplateContainer.Controls.Add(dropDownList); _standardOptionsListBoxes.Add(dropDownList); AsyncPostBackTrigger trigger = new AsyncPostBackTrigger() { ControlID = dropDownList.UniqueID, EventName = "SelectedIndexChanged" }; this.StandardOptionsUpdatePanel.Triggers.Add(trigger); } } void QuotePropertyDropDown_SelectedIndexChanged(object sender, EventArgs e) { QuoteCostLabel.Text = QuoteCost.ToString(); }

  • Best openid implementation

    - by AyKarsi
I think OpenId has many things for it. But the biggest beef I have with it, is usability. Especially the technically non-savvy have dificulty understanding that the need to select a "provider" to login. Stackoverflows login implementation is quite good, but I think it would cost me quite some explaining to get my mother to use here gmail account to register/login to another site... So the question is: Does anynone know OpenId register/login implemtantions which are more usable than Stackoverflows?

  • How to Compute a Database Column in .NET

    - by Michael
I have a Database named CarsType.accdb there are four fields in the data base Item_Name, Item_Num, Item_Qty, Item_Cost. I am able to get the database to display my data in VisualBasic but I am not sure how to get the total cost to appear in my label (lblTotalCost). I prefer doing it in VB versus writing in my access program. All I am wanting to do it multiply item_qty * Item_Cost How would I go about doing that?

  • memory usage by objects in common lisp

    - by Farzad Bekran
Is there a way to find out how much memory is used by an instance of a class or basic data types in general? I have a toy webframework in cl that creates and manages web pages with instances of classes that represent the html tags and their properties, and as they are supposed to make an html page, they have children in a slot called children. so I was thinking how much a user's session will cost the server if I take this approach. Thanks.

  • How does porting between Linux and Windows work?

    - by Matt
If a particular piece of software is made to be run on one platform and the programmer/company/whatever wants to port it to the other, what exactly is done? I mean, do they just rewrite linux or windows-specific references to the equivalent in the other? Or is an entire rewrite necessary? Just trying to understand what makes it so cost-prohibitive that so many major vendors don't port their software to Linux (specifically thinking about Adobe) Thanks

  • How to keep PayPal variables secure

    - by dclowd9901
I'm trying to link my 3rd party shopping cart to PayPal, and in the process I'm finding that my variables are extremely exposed, such that, if someone uses, say, Firebug, to manipulate the values of my variables, they can change the cost of the items in the transaction. I'm very new to online carts and shopping, so my question is how do I keep this layer of exposure away from users and secure for the website?

  • Oracle : Identifying duplicates in a table without index

    - by user288031
When I try to create a unique index on a large table, I get a unique contraint error. The unique index in this case is a composite key of 4 columns. Is there an efficient way to identify the duplicates other than : select col1, col2, col3, col4, count() from Table1 group by col1, col2, col3, col4 having count() 1 The explain plan above shows full table scan with extremely high cost, and just want to find if there is another way. Thanks !
