  • How to terminate a particular Azure worker role instance

    - by Oliver Bock
    Background I am trying to work out the best structure for an Azure application. Each of my worker roles will spin up multiple long-running jobs. Over time I can transfer jobs from one instance to another by switching them to a readonly mode on the source instance, spinning them up on the target instance, and then spinning the original down on the source instance. If I have too many jobs then I can tell Azure to spin up extra role instance, and use them for new jobs. Conversely if my load drops (e.g. during the night) then I can consolidate outstanding jobs to a few machines and tell Azure to give me fewer instances. The trouble is that (as I understand it) Azure provides no mechanism to allow me to decide which instance to stop. Thus I cannot know which servers to consolidate onto, and some of my jobs will die when their instance stops, causing delays for users while I restart those jobs on surviving instances. Idea 1: I decide which instance to stop, and return from its Run(). I then tell Azure to reduce my instance count by one, and hope it concludes that the broken instance is a good candidate. Has anyone tried anything like this? Idea 2: I predefine a whole bunch of different worker roles, with identical contents. I can individually stop and start them by switching their instance count from zero to one, and back again. I think this idea would work, but I don't like it because it seems to go against the natural Azure way of doing things, and because it involves me in a lot of extra bookkeeping to manage the extra worker roles. Idea 3: Live with it. Any better ideas?

  • XSLT fails to load huge XML doc after matching certain elements

    - by krisvandenbergh
    I'm trying to match certain elements using XSLT. My input document is very large and the source XML fails to load after processing the following code (consider especially the first line). <xsl:template match="XMI/XMI.content/Model_Management.Model/Foundation.Core.Namespace.ownedElement/Model_Management.Package/Foundation.Core.Namespace.ownedElement"> <rdf:RDF> <rdf:Description rdf:about=""> <xsl:for-each select="Foundation.Core.Class"> <xsl:for-each select="Foundation.Core.ModelElement.name"> <owl:Class rdf:ID="@Foundation.Core.ModelElement.name" /> </xsl:for-each> </xsl:for-each> </rdf:Description> </rdf:RDF> </xsl:template> Apparently the XSLT fails to load after "Model_Management.Model". The PHP code is as follows: if ($xml->loadXML($source_xml) == false) { die('Failed to load source XML: ' . $http_file); } It then fails to perform loadXML and immediately dies. I think there are two options now. 1) I should set a maximum executing time. Frankly, I don't know how that I do this for the built-in PHP 5 XSLT processor. 2) Think about another way to match. What would be the best way to deal with this? The input document can be found at http://krisvandenbergh.be/uml_pricing.xml Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

  • PHPUnit reporting "Aborted" no matter what tests are run

    - by GrumpyCanuck
    Having a weird problem with PHPUnit. We're using PHPUnit as part of a continuous integration environment, that contains one app written using Zend Framework and one app written using CodeIgniter. Unit tests run just fine under Zend Framework, but whenever I run the tests for CodeIgniter using fooStack's CIUnit bridge, I always get the same problem at the end: PHPUnit 3.4.14 by Sebastian Bergmann. ............... . Time: 1 second, Memory: 7.00Mb OK (16 tests, 14 assertions) Aborted First off, I do not know what those empty spaces between the . means. Secondly, no matter what test I run (all of them or each one separately) I get the same Aborted message at the very end. The tests themselves do not contain any exit or die statements. When I run the same version of PHPUnit on my laptop (running OS-X Snow Leopard and same version of Zend Server Community Edition) I do not get that aborted message. Running PHP 5.3.2 on Ubuntu installed using Zend Server Community Edition. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

  • Opening a Unicode file with Perl

    - by Jaco Pretorius
    I'm using osql to run several sql scripts against a database and then I need to look at the results file to check if any errors occurred. The problem is that perl doesn't seem to like the fact that the results files are unicode. I wrote a little test script to test it and the output comes out all warbled. $file = shift; open OUTPUT, $file or die "Can't open $file: $!\n"; while (<OUTPUT>) { print $_; if (/Invalid|invalid|Cannot|cannot/) { push(@invalids, $file); print "invalid file - $inputfile - schedule for retry\n"; last; } } Any ideas? I've tried decoding using decode_utf8 but it makes no difference. I've also tried to set the encoding when opening the file. I think the problem might be that osql puts the result file in UTF-16 format, but I'm not sure. When I open the file in textpad it just tells me 'Unicode'. Edit: Using perl v5.8.8

  • How to get JSON code into MYSQL database?

    - by the_boy_za
    I've created this form with a jQuery autocomplete function. The selected brand from the autocomplete list needs to get sent to a PHP file using $.ajax function. My code doesn't seem to work but i can't find the error. I don't know why the data isn't getting inserted into MYSQL database. Here is my code: JQUERY: $(document).ready(function() { $("#autocomplete").autocomplete({ minLength: 2 }); $("#autocomplete").autocomplete({ source: ["Adidas", "Airforce", "Alpha Industries", "Asics", "Bikkemberg", "Birkenstock", "Bjorn Borg", "Brunotti", "Calvin Klein", "Cars Jeans", "Chanel", "Chasin", "Diesel", "Dior", "DKNY", "Dolce & Gabbana"] }); $("#add-brand").click(function() { var merk = $("#autocomplete").val(); $("#selected-brands").append(" <a class=\"deletemerk\" href=\"#\">" + merk + "</a>"); //Add your parameters here var param = JSON.stringify({ Brand: merk }); $.ajax({ type: "POST", async: true, url: "scripttohandlejson.php", contentType: "application/json", data: param, dataType: "json", success: function (good){ //handle success alert(good) }, failure: function (bad){ //handle any errors alert(bad) } }); return false; }); }); PHP FILE: scripttohandlejson.php <?PHP $getcontent = json_decode($json, true); $getcontent->{'Brand'}; $vraag ="INSERT INTO kijken (merk) VALUES ='$getcontent' "; $voerin = mysql_query($vraag) or die("couldnt put into db"); <?

  • Using game of life or other virtual environment for artificial (intelligence) life simulation? [clos

    - by Berlin Brown
    One of my interests in AI focuses not so much on data but more on biologic computing. This includes neural networks, mapping the brain, cellular-automata, virtual life and environments. Described below is an exciting project that includes develop a virtual environment for bots to evolve in. "Polyworld is a cross-platform (Linux, Mac OS X) program written by Larry Yaeger to evolve Artificial Intelligence through natural selection and evolutionary algorithms." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyworld " Polyworld is a promising project for studying virtual life but it still is far from creating an "intelligent autonomous" agent. Here is my question, in theory, what parameters would you use create an AI environment? Possibly a brain environment? Possibly multiple self contained life organisms that have their own "brain" or life structures. I would like a create a spin on the game of life simulation. What if you have a 64x64 game of life grid. But instead of one grid, you might have N number of grids. The N number of grids are your "life force" If all of the game of life entities die in a particular grid then that entire grid dies. A group of "grids" makes up a life form. I don't have an immediate goal. First, I want to simulate an environment and visualize what is going on in the environment with OpenGL and see if there are any interesting properties to the environment. I then want to add "scarce resources" and see if the AI environment can manage resources adequately.

  • PHP Notice: Undefined property: stdClass:

    - by 4D
    I've got an array coming back from a Flash app created in Flash Builder 4. I have a service setup that queries and brings data back from the DB successfully, however the Update script is generating the Undefined Property errors. I'm still learning both PHP and Flash Builder, and don't fully understand what the $this- commands do. If anyone can suggest where this script is going wrong, it is basically just generated by Flash Builder and is not something I've developed myself, I would appreciate it? Also if someone can explain $this- to me that would be awesome too? I've seen them before, but then I've seen scripts doing the same thing that do not use them, so is this an old way of doing things? Really appreciate any input anyone can give. public function updateItem($item) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub // Update an existing record in the database and return the item // Sample code \' $this->connect(); $sql = "UPDATE tbltrust SET inst_code = '$item->inst_code', trust_name = '$item->trust_name', trust_code = '$item->trust_code' WHERE trust_key = '$item->trust_key'"; mysqli_query($this->connection, $sql) or die('Query failed: ' . mysqli_error($this->connection)); mysqli_close($this->connection); }

  • Python: Catching / blocking SIGINT during system call

    - by danben
    I've written a web crawler that I'd like to be able to stop via the keyboard. I don't want the program to die when I interrupt it; it needs to flush its data to disk first. I also don't want to catch KeyboardInterruptedException, because the persistent data could be in an inconsistent state. My current solution is to define a signal handler that catches SIGINT and sets a flag; each iteration of the main loop checks this flag before processing the next url. However, I've found that if the system happens to be executing socket.recv() when I send the interrupt, I get this: ^C Interrupted; stopping... // indicates my interrupt handler ran Traceback (most recent call last): File "crawler_test.py", line 154, in <module> main() ... File "/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/socket.py", line 397, in readline data = recv(1) socket.error: [Errno 4] Interrupted system call and the process exits completely. Why does this happen? Is there a way I can prevent the interrupt from affecting the system call?

  • How to append a row to a TableViewSection in Titanium?

    - by Mike Trpcic
    I'm developing an iPhone application in Titanium, and need to append a row to a particular TableViewSection. I can't do this on page load, as it's done dynamically by the user throughout the lifecycle of the application. The documentation says that the TableViewSection has an add method which takes two arguments, but I can't make it work. Here's my existing code: for(var i = 0; i <= product_count; i++){ productsTableViewSection.add( Ti.UI.createTableViewRow({ title:'Testing...' }) ); } That is just passing one argument in, and that causes Titanium to die with an uncaught exception: 2010-04-26 16:57:18.056 MyApplication[72765:207] *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'Invalid update: invalid number of rows in section 2. Since the documentation says that TableViewSection takes in "view" and "row", I tried the following: for(var i = 0; i <= product_count; i++){ productsTableViewSection.add( Ti.UI.createView({}), Ti.UI.createTableViewRow({ title:'Testing...' }) ); } The above code doesn't throw the exception, but it gives a [WARN]: [WARN] Invalid type passed to function. expected: TiUIViewProxy, was: TiUITableViewRowProxy in -[TiUITableViewSectionProxy add:] (TiUITableViewSectionProxy.m:62) TableViewSections don't seem to support any methods like appendRow, or insertRow, so I don't know where else to go with this. I've looked through the KitchenSink app, but there are no examples that I could find of adding a row to a TableViewSection. Any help is appreciated.

  • How can we best represent the SDLC process as a board game?

    - by Innogetics
    I recently got interested in financial board games and saw how they can be very useful in educating children about certain concepts. It got me thinking whether it was also possible to represent certain aspects of executing a software project via a boardgame and make it fun. Here are a few things that I have come up so far: human resources and tools / techniques are represented as cards. requirements are also represented as cards, which are dealt equally to each player, and the objective is to move all requirement cards through an "SDLC" board (one per player) that represent a series of squares grouped according to phases (design all the way to deployment) the passage of time is represented in a main square board like monopoly, and completing a trip around the board (passing "Go") allows the player to move each of the requirement cards a number of steps through the SDLC board depending on the capability of the resource cards (senior programmer allows one requirement to move two squares in the dev phase, junior programmer only one, etc.) players will start with play money representing the project budget, and at every pass at "Go" is payday. the player is out of the game if he runs out of funds. the main board also has "chance" / "risk" cards, which represent things that can mess up a project. damage is applied at the roll of a die, and chance modifiers depend on whether the user has "bought" tools / techniques. I haven't implemented this idea yet as I'm still looking at more play elements that can make the game more engaging, as well as soliciting for more ideas. I am planning to release this under Creative Commons license but haven't decided on the exact license yet. Any more game play suggestions are welcome. UPDATE: This was posted in BoardGameGeek and there's now an active discussion thread there. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/4436694

  • How to store an inventory using hashtables?

    - by Harm De Weirdt
    Hello everyone. For an assignment in collego we have to make a script in Perl that allows us to manage an inventory for an e-store. (The example given was Amazon) Users can make orders in a fully text-based environment and the inventory must be updated when an order is completed. Every item in the inventory has 3 to 4 attributes: a product code, a title, a price and for some an amount (MP3's for example do not have this attribute) Since this is my first encounter with Perl, i don't really know how to start. My main problem is how i should "implement" the inventory in the program. One of the functions of the program is searching trough the titles. Another is to make an order, where the user should give a product code. My first idea was a hashtable with the productcode as key. But if i wanted to search in the titles that could be a problem because of this: the hashkey would be something like DVD-123, the information belonging to that key could be "The Green Mask 12" (without the ") where the 12 indicates how many of this DVD are currently in stock. So i'd have to find a way to ignore the 12 in the end. Another solution was to use the title as Hashkey, but that would prove cumbersome too I think. Is there a way to make a hashtable with 2 key's, and when I give only one it returns an array with the other values? (Including the other key and the other information) That way I could use another key depending on what info I need from my inventory. We have to read the default inventory from a txt file looking like this: MP3-72|Lady Gaga - Kiss and Run (Fear of Commitment Monster)|0.99 CD-400|Kings of Leon - Only By The Night|14.50|2 MP3-401|Kings of Leon - Closer|0.85 DVD-144|Live Free or Die Hard|14.99|2 SOFT-864|Windows Vista|49.95 Any help would be appreciated very much :) PS: I am sorry for my bad grammar, English isn't my native language.

    my code is as follows <?php include("config.php"); $ip=$_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']; if($_POST['id']) { $id=$_POST['id']; $id = mysql_escape_String($id); $ip_sql=mysql_query("select ip_add from Voting_IP where mes_id_fk='$id' and ip_add='$ip'"); $count=mysql_num_rows($ip_sql); if($count==0) { $sql = "update Messages set up=up+1 where mes_id='$id'"; mysql_query($sql); $sql_in = "insert into Voting_IP (mes_id_fk,ip_add) values ('$id','$ip')"; mysql_query($sql_in) or die(mysql_error()); echo "<script>alert('Thanks for the vote');</script>"; } else { echo "<script>alert('You have already voted');</script>"; } $result=mysql_query("select up from Messages where mes_id='$id'"); $row=mysql_fetch_array($result); $up_value=$row['up']; echo "<img src='button.png' width='110' height='90'>"; echo $up_value; } ?> My problem is that the insert process doesnot take place at all. the script tags echos an alert box. even the img tag is echoed to the web page. but the insert process doesnot take place. the config file is fine.. note: this code works on my local machine which has php 5.3 but it doesnot work on the server which has php 5.2.. any advice..???

  • Shutting down a windows service that has threads

    - by Dave
    I have a windows service written in .NET 3.5 (c#) with a System.Threading.Timer that spawns several Threads in each callback. These are just normal threads (no Thread Pool) and I've set the IsBackground = true on each thread since I'm only going to be running managed code. When a user stops the service, what happens to all the threads? Do they die gracefully? I don't have any code that manages the threads via calling join or abort. Is it correct to assume the IsBackground = true is enough to assume the threads will be disposed and stopped when a user stops the service? What exactly happens when someone stops a windows service via the Service Manager GUI? Does it kill the process after it fires the OnStop event? This would actually be acceptable for me because I've built a separate mechanism that allows a user know for sure there are no threads before they stop the service. This is done via 2 WCF methods exposed from a ServiceHost that runs inside the Windows Service. There's one method to stop spawning new threads and another method to query how many running threads there are left. I'm just curious what happens if they skip those steps and just stop the service... It seems the IsBackground helps achieve this:

  • Why does Perl's DBI complain about "failed: ERROR OCIEnvNlsCreate" when I try to connect to Oracle 1

    - by John
    I am getting the following error connecting to an Oracle 11g database using a simple Perl script: failed: ERROR OCIEnvNlsCreate. Check ORACLE_HOME (Linux) env var or PATH (Windows) and or NLS settings, permissions, etc. at The script is as follows: #!/usr/local/bin/perl use strict; use DBI; if ($#ARGV < 3) { print "Usage: perl testDbAccess.pl dataBaseUser dataBasePassword SID dataBasePort\n"; exit 0; } my ($user, $pwd, $sid, $port) = @ARGV; my $host = `hostname`; my $dbh; my $sth; my $dbname = "dbi:Oracle:HOST=$host;SID=$sid;PORT=$port"; openDbConnection(); closeDbConnection(); sub openDbConnection() { $dbh = DBI->connect ($dbname, $user ,$pwd , { RaiseError => 1}) || die "Database connection not made: $DBI::errstr"; } sub closeDbConnection() { #$sth->finish(); $dbh->disconnect(); } Anyone seen this problem before?

  • Counting total sum of each value in one column w.r.t another in Perl

    - by sfactor
    I have tab delimited data with multiple columns. I have OS names in column 31 and data bytes in columns 6 and 7. What I want to do is count the total volume of each unique OS. So, I did something in Perl like this: #!/usr/bin/perl use warnings; my @hhfilelist = glob "*.txt"; my %count = (); for my $f (@hhfilelist) { open F, $f || die "Cannot open $f: $!"; while (<F>) { chomp; my @line = split /\t/; # counting volumes in col 6 and 7 for 31 $count{$line[30]} = $line[5] + $line[6]; } close (F); } my $w = 0; foreach $w (sort keys %count) { print "$w\t$count{$w}\n"; } So, the result would be something like Windows 100000 Linux 5000 Mac OSX 15000 Android 2000 But there seems to be some error in this code because the resulting values I get aren't as expected. What am I doing wrong?

  • Why is my PHP string being converted to 1?

    - by animuson
    Ok, so here's the quick rundown. I have a function to generate the page numbers. This: <?php die($ani->e->tmpl->pages("/archive", 1, 15, 1, true)); ?> will output Single Page like expected. But this: <?php $page_numbers = $ani->e->tmpl->pages("/archive", 1, 15, 1, true); ?> <?= $page_numbers ?> will output a simple 1 to the page. Why is it getting converted to a 1? I would expect it to store the 'Single Page' string to the page_numbers variable and then output it (like an echo) exactly the same. EDIT: Running a var_dump($page_numbers) returns int(1)... Here is the entire function in context: <?php // other functions... function show_list() { global $ani; $page_numbers = $ani->e->tmpl->pages("/archive", 1, 15, 1, true); ob_start(); ?> <!-- content:start --> <?php $archive_result = $ani->e->db->build(array("select" => "*", "from" => "animuson_archive", "orderby" => "0-time", "limit" => 15)); while ($archive = $ani->e->db->fetch($archive_result)) { ?> <h2><a href="/archive/article/<?= $archive['aid'] ?>/<?= $archive['title_nice'] ?>"><?= $archive['title'] ?></a></h2> <!-- breaker --> <?php } ?> <?= var_dump($page_numbers) ?> <!-- content:stop --> <?php $ani->e->tmpl->process("box", ob_get_clean()); } // other functions... ?>

  • PHP image watermark only displaying image on page

    - by Satch3000
    I am testing a script where I watermark an image in my webpage. The script works fine and the image is watermark but my problem is that only the image is displayed on the page. As soon as I add the script to my page it's like the web page is converted to the image that I'm watermarking. I think it's because of header("content-type: image/jpeg"); from the code. I need to watermark the image on my webpage but I also need the rest of my webpage to be displayed too. How is this done? I'm quite confused on how this works. The script I'm using is from here Here's the code I'm using: <?php $main_img = "Porsche_911_996_Carrera_4S.jpg"; // main big photo / picture $watermark_img = "watermark.gif"; // use GIF or PNG, JPEG has no tranparency support $padding = 3; // distance to border in pixels for watermark image $opacity = 100; // image opacity for transparent watermark $watermark = imagecreatefromgif($watermark_img); // create watermark $image = imagecreatefromjpeg($main_img); // create main graphic if(!$image || !$watermark) die("Error: main image or watermark could not be loaded!"); $watermark_size = getimagesize($watermark_img); $watermark_width = $watermark_size[0]; $watermark_height = $watermark_size[1]; $image_size = getimagesize($main_img); $dest_x = $image_size[0] - $watermark_width - $padding; $dest_y = $image_size[1] - $watermark_height - $padding; // copy watermark on main image imagecopymerge($image, $watermark, $dest_x, $dest_y, 0, 0, $watermark_width, $watermark_height, $opacity); // print image to screen header("content-type: image/jpeg"); imagejpeg($image); imagedestroy($image); imagedestroy($watermark); ?> NOTE: I'm getting the image path from the database so I cannot hardcode the image filename as it's dynamic.

  • Get number of posts in a topic PHP

    - by Wayne
    How do I get to display the number of posts on a topic like a forum. I used this... (how very noobish): function numberofposts($n) { $sql = "SELECT * FROM posts WHERE topic_id = '" . $n . "'"; $result = mysql_query($sql) or die(mysql_error()); $count = mysql_num_rows($result); echo number_format($count); } The while loop of listing topics: <div class="topics"> <div class="topic-name"> <p><?php echo $row['topic_title']; ?></p> </div> <div class="topic-posts"> <p><?php echo numberofposts($row['topic_id']); ?></p> </div> </div> Although it is a bad method of doing this... All I need is to know what would be the best method, don't just point me out to a website, do it here, because I'm trying to learn much. Okay? :D Thanks.

  • Catching / blocking SIGINT during system call
