  Hello my problem is getting annoying. Its my hard drive whats being funny i guess but here's the problem , before updating ubuntu everything was fine , and now im stuck on loading screen with white and orange dots , when i press S the system crashes and gives black screen and ctrl+alt+f1 doesnt show anything , system works fine on liveCD but i want it working on harddrive , any suggestions what to do , if i can access harddrive but not system itself? how i could fix it? i hope someone can help me out real soon.

• Installing Ubuntu 12.04 shut down?

  i have installed ubuntu before on my old laptop, i remember it was a breeze. Now im trying to install it on my desktop and i am stuck. i tried the Windows installer, when restarted and selected linux, the pc went to black screen the shut down... tried with cd, i got the ubuntu purple screen, then shut down. its an intel i5 build with 8G ram and asus motherboard...(don't know if it makes any difference) any help?

• Laptop Asus P50IJ with Intel 4500M GMA output going to a Dell 1907FP external monitor will not allow

  Hello - I just purchased an Asus P50IJ-X2 laptop which has a Intel GMA 4500M video card running Windows7. At work I output this laptop to a Dell 1907FP LCD which has a maximum resolution of 1280x1024. Not matter what I do the Windows will not allow the laptop to set a resolution higher than 1024x768 to this LCD monitor. Ive even gone to the extent of downloading PowerStrip (I'd post a link but Im new and can only enter 1 url, if you google for powerstrip its the first option) to create a custom driver for my monitor thinking Windows was having a hard time seeing the available resolutions it would accept. However, powerstrip read the registery and properly sees the monitor and what its capable of so Im now at a complete loss as to why Windows7 will not allow me to set/use a 1280x1024 resolution for this external monitor (as my last laptop did running Vista). The Intel documentation (http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/quick-reference-guide-to-intel-integrated-graphics/) indicates that the GMA 4500M should be able to run up to a 2560x1600 max res. The Dell 1907FP specification states it can run up to a 1280x1024 res. But no matter what the computer will not allow me to set higher than a 1024x768. I'm completely baffled but I would really like to be able to output this laptop to a reasonable resolution, 1024x768 makes me feel like I'm using my mom's computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated! • Per client DNS server assignment using Pfsense

  I have a network where pfsense is the gateway. There are two sets of clients that I want. One where there will be some restrictions to the network (example, IM being blocked) and one network where there are no restrictions. One easy way I thought about doing this was assigning the different domains different DNS servers. One set could use OpenDNS, the other could use Google's Public DNS. The set with OpenDNS would have the filter options on (using OpenDNS' dashboard, I can check block IM .... so I do not manually need to block login.oscar.aol.com, meebo.com, gmail chat ....etc). So the problem is the DHCP server looks like it will only assign a single set of DNS servers to clients. Is there a way to set a per client assignment? Is there a better way to obtain what I want to obtain. This is just a small home network. I do not need anything fancy, but I do need this functionality in one way or another.

  I have problem with discovering my FC-connected CX-300 storage. Frankly speaking I'm complete novice in FibreChannel, so step by step explanation would be appreciated. My configuration consist of two IBM HS20 blades with RHEL5.4 on board and 2x Qlogic ISP2422-based 4Gb Fibre Channel HBAs on each blade. As a FC switch there are two Brocades built in BladeCenter Chassis, and finally there is EMC Clariion CX-300.   Sorry to ask whats probably very obvious question. I have just got a new server that is fantastically cheap but unfortunatly doesnt come with any technical support and Im very out of my depth ! My hosting company has provided the following information... Below you will find your additional IP addresses added to the server 5.9.36.51 Please note that you can use the subnet only for this server. IP: 5.9.225.64 /27 Mask: 255.255.255.224 Broadcast: 5.9.225.95 Useable IP addresses: 5.9.225.65 to 5.9.225.94 It has cPanel with WHM and im going through the setup... I have a number of questions... my domian is purchased from godaddy and I want to use it as the name server. Question 1: Which IP or IP's do I enter into the godaddy interface for ns1.mydomian.com ns2.mydomain.com Question 2: In the WHM nameserver setup what do I enter for... • Windows XP Language, explorer.exe

  Hi, I was given by my company a laptop with Windows XP Professional in Spanish. I would like to translate it to English, since I really DISLIKE to use localized versions of programs. I have read about Windows MUI packs, however you MUST have Windows XP Pro in English in order to translate it to other language, you can't translate it TO English from other language. Since reinstalling the OS using a Win XP CD in english is not an option (don't have the license nor the CD, and don't have domain privileges to rejoin my computer to the domain), I was wondering what are the essential files that contain localized strings of text. I was doing some research, and apparently explorer.exe has many of the Windows Error Messages and other strings. Will replacing my original explorer.exe with one from Windows XP in English be enough (and work) for having a "basic" english version of windows? Im mainly interested in having error messages, start menu, and the control panel in english. Also, does it HAVE to be the same version as the Service Pack im running? Besides explorer.exe are there any other essential files that i should try to get and replace? Do you see any "dangers" in replacing this files with english version ones?   I followed a tutorial on how to install and get VNCserver to run on CentOS 6 (since freenx isnt supported yet) and I keep getting Starting VNC server: 1:user [FAILED] How do I figure out whats going on here? Im new to Linux/CentOS and im trying to get RDP going so I can step away from SSH as much as possible (you know us Windows users love our pretty GUI's). • Need Info on the Hidden Switch in SET - "/S" How to implement

  I am having some problems doing a proper search of "SET/S" or "SET /S" on google and other search providers. The difficulty arises with the SLASH "/", it is commonly used in search engines to add a "nearness" to the search parameter. I have found no way to escape the SLASH when searching for a SLASH. For those on this community, try searching this domain with the two search terms listed above. It just doesn't work, it ends up looking for SET S instead. But I digress. So Im asking the uber-guru's on this board to help me find out about the documentation of /S and how to implement SET /S in a batch file. SET is an internal DOS/cmd commandand allows many things incuding prompting the user, integer math and writing environment strings. in looking at this link: http://www.robvanderwoude.com/os2set.php it appears that the /S is only for OS2 but im thinking that this might not be the case, due to this: http://www.dostips.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2704, apparently used with substings and macros. any help is much appreciated

• Photoshop CS6 Corrupted File recovery

  Last night I was working on a client application mock-up in photoshop, but was goin to take a break from my work so I saved the .PSD file on my internal HDD and put my computer into stand-by mode once the file had finished saving. Unfortunately my computer crashed while it was entering stand-by and shut itself down (photoshop was still open). I did not boot it again to make sure all my files were ok because they had already been saved, but today once I opened up the file again it was extremely corrupted and also completely un-editable (screenshot bellow). so what im asking is there any way to recover my work, or at least some of it? i have put in a good few days work on this project and would hate to have to restart it. the size of the file is 3070 KB, even though it reads as 712 KB in photoshop. i dont know if these file sizes are larger or either smaller than the original non-corrupted file's size, but considering all the layers in the file i suspect it was larger before it corrupted. im using windows XP professional 32bit SP3. both my OS and said .PSD file are located on the same internal HDD (74.4 GB). i do have an external HDD (1.5 TB) but i primarily only use it for movies music and tv shows. i dont know if it was plugged in t the time of me editing the document last, though, if it means anything. i have tried many image and PSd recovery softwares but none have returned any results that may help recover my work. edit: i tried using a photo reccovery software (odboso Photorecovery) that actually seems to recover the corrupted file in question judging by the size of the file, but i cannot recover it because of the licence fee. knowing that the file is still likely on my HDD, what location might it be located?

• Delete ARP cache on Mac OS when moving from one Wifi network to the other

  I am facing wireless connectivity problems when I move from one Wifi network to the other. Here is how it happens: I am at my friends place. I connect to his Wifi. His Wifi router ip address is 192.168.0.1. Everything is fine I close my laptop, come back to my house, open my laptop and I connect to the Wifi Network at my place. Different ESSID, but the Wifi router address is the same 192.168.0.1. At this point I cant get to anything on the internet. To debug I try to see if I can ping the router (192.168.0.1), I cant. I get a no route to host. Meanwhile airport tells me Im connected to Wifi. I see the arp cache and I see a permanent entry for 192.168.0.1 ? (192.168.0.1) at 5c:d9:98:65:73:6c on en1 permanent [ethernet] This permanent bit looks problematic. I go ahead and delete the arp cache entry and all is fine with the world until I go back to my friends place where the same situation plays out. Now my question is, why the hell is this happening? If there is no way around it, can I run a script on Wifi connect/disconnect to clear out the arp cache? • Virtual Windows 2008 Server Activation with ESX

  I had a decommissioned server (Dell PE2950) that we could still use, it had OEM Windows 2003 Std on it but wanted to use it as a new host with VMware ESX5 to put a couple legacy severs on it. I wiped it clean and maxed out the memory. But when I added the memory I noticed the product key sticker was a "WindowsServer08 Std 1-4cpu" product key, and it also had a Virtual Key. Not sure why it had Win2003 and not Win2008 from the start, but I would like to use that license if I can. The virtual host would stay on the same physical server, so there shouldn't be a problem with licensing... but I do not want to use Hyper-V unless I can not help it. I have installed ESX5 on the server, but I cannot get the Windows 2008 server to activate. The product key is hard to read, and I have checked the key quite a few times. But my question is... Is it because Hyper-V was not installed on the host? But I thought you could use the product key alone on a virtual host? Maybe because I am not using a Dell Windows 2008 disk but iso from MS directly via the Volumne Licensing site? EDIT: well, Im pretty sure I got the product key correct. If its not the product key, could the activation problem be because Im not using hyper-v or maybe the correct install dvd? EDIT2: maybe because I added 28GB of memory? Originally 4GB...

• Multiheaded X.org with a single workspace-pool

  I've got an idea for x.org/$randomwindowmanager in combination with a multiheaded setup, but I haven't figured out how it should work. Also I don't really know where to place the feature request. Now for the idea. I've been working with screen (wikipedia:GNU_Screen) for some years now. One thing I like about it, is the fact that I can get a multi-display mode (screen -x), so you can have multiple terminals all connected to the same screen. The fun thing about it, is that you can get 2 terminals with the same content and switch my onscreen layout, without moving the terminals. I admit, in screen it's not extremely useful, but I think for a wm it can be. Imagine this. You've got two monitors and 4 workdesks. On one workdesk I've got my IDE with code, on the second one I've got the output, on the third one I've got the documentation and on the forth one I've got my e-mail and IM clients. At one moment, I want my IDE and output on my monitors, another moment my code and documentation and Yet another moment my IM to consult a colleague and documentation or code. Finally my colleague comes to help me at my desk. I'd like it if we could both watch the same workdesk without him sitting on my lap, so I turn one monitor so he can see it better. It would be great if we could see the same thing that's on my monitor (exclude mousepointer). The thing with most WMs is that your workspaces on the two monitors are either separated or glued together. If they're separated, you can change workspaces on each monitor autonomous, but you can't exchange applications between monitors because they're different x-clients (iirc). If they're glued together (xinerama), you can exchange the applications, but when changing your workspace, the other monitors change too. So, what I'd like to know is this. Is this already possible or should I submit a feature request somewhere (and if so, where?)

• Issue with exim4u

  I am using exim4u for a mail server on debian. Everything has been working fine until recently. I have not done anything to the server from the time it was working until now. I have a domain set up and is receiving and sending mail correctly. When i put a forwarding address in to a gmail address, I can still receive and send email from my webmail client but it never makes it to gmail. • torrent downloads not showing on Squid log

  hello, i have just a few months working as sysadmin, hence i still have lots to learn, first thing id like to do is as follows: We have an OpenBSD 4.5 box acting like firewall,dns,cache etc, the box has 2 network cards, one conected directly to the internet and the other to our switch, i used to work with sarg for the log analysis but then changed to the much faster free-sa. I use a daily free-sa report to check the bandwidth usage and report our top 5 bandwidth consumers (3 days a week being #1 and you will be buying the pizzas :D, we are a small company ~20 so we are very familiar). this was working really good until recently, one of us required to download some stuff via torrent (~3GB) and since the pizza rule is active for non-work related downloads, he told me (verified) that his download was indeed work related so i would dismiss that 3GB off his quota, but to my surprise the log didnt showed that 3GB, since his ip consumption was only around 290MB. More recently, since the FIFA world cup started, we know that some of the employees are watching the match's streaming, we know it and we dont care about it since, like already stated, we are a small company so we dont have restrictive policies, we all can chat, watch youtube, download anything we want BUT we are only allowed 300MB a day otherwise you'll get in the top5-pizza-board, anyway, that streaming consumption is also not showing in the free-sa reports. So my question is, why is these data being excluded from the reports? im thinking that the free-sa reports list only certain types of things but im also thinking if are the squid logs the ones that are not erm... logging these conections. Any help, guide, advice or clarification is appreciated.

• Explorer.exe hangup during move large file into external drive

  During move large files (700mb+) to external drive formated NTFS via USB 3.0 I've noticed strange things about explorer.exe (I am using Windows 7 up to date) Sometimes after move file the explorer get stuck (ie. it can happen after few files during move of several large files) - moving window freeze and I am unable to kill explorer (via taskmgr, or cmdline TASKKILL). In command line I've got something like this (taskmgr shows that explorer.exe is still running - I've got the same PID every time I try to kill it and no diagnostic message): C:\Windows\system32TASKKILL /F /IM explorer.exe SUKCES: proces "explorer.exe" o identyfikatorze PID 6296 zostal zakonczony. C:\Windows\system32TASKKILL /F /IM explorer.exe SUKCES: proces "explorer.exe" o identyfikatorze PID 6296 zostal zakonczony. If I try to run another explorer.exe process at this point, I got desktop icon and start bar back but I cannot open any explorer window After few minutes explorer.exe finally dies and I am able to rerun it without rebooting File that I moved have two copies - one local and one on the external drive (the original file wasn't delete after move); Both copies seems to contain the same data (same length and CRC info) If this happen during move of multiply files, only some files are moved and one of them have two copies (both locally and on the external drive) What can I do to fix those explorer hangs? Added: The same problem exist when copying files, it hangsup between large files Similar problem exist when I tried to use TotalCommander (x64): copying paused at 80% of one of files, TC didn't hung up (but clicking cancel in copying dialog box doesn't have any effect). During this pause I can't kill TotalCmd.exe just like Explorer.exe Added (2): This problem seems to disappear when I use 32 bit applications (like TotalCommander (x86) ), but I need to do more testing to be sure of this Added (3): There are several errors in event log, source: disk, id: 11, qualifiers: 49156, task: 0, level: 2, keywords: 0x80000000000000 (This may be important, and I forgot to mention this): Main disk is encrypted via Truecrypt (boot-in password)

• A very peculiar problem with an old pc and a newer laptop...

  I got my old pc ( 248mb ram , 80 GB ) repaired and the tech people put XP in it .My newer laptop has UBUNTU 10.04 .now I only have one cable and one usb cord .So I connected my modem (with only one CAT5 port and 4 usb ports ) to laptop with CAT5 cable .Th internet is working fine . I also wanted to use net on older pc so I installed the usb drivers for win and it worked. But I got fed up of win xp and made a separate partition for FreeBSD which I planned to install .During the install I screwd up sumthing and now freebsd starts with a boot option with a ? mark in place of win xp .If I click on that it gives me a "NTLDR missing " msg. I tried connecting CAT5 cable between old and new pc and tried connecting my laptop with USB cable but nothing happend and then I realozed the modem doesnt have a WORKING usb driver for LINUX :( .FCUK ! .Freebsd doesnt` even detect the LAN cable if I use it for old pc . So basically I have a old pc that has FREEBSD which I can olny start and stare at the blank terminal console but works perfectly otherwise .FREEBSD was supposed to detect the LAN cable ??.And I have a laptop that has LINUX which only works if I connect it with a CAT5 cable .wtf . So what can I do with my old pc ??? any local server (if possible :( ) or some such thing ? or can u suggest any use .Im 18 and im into learning programming , coding .So I can practice it .Thankx !

• Backing up a Windos 7 partition from Macbook with no OS X

  I have a 3 year macbook with Windows 7 installed as 40gb and OS X as 40gb (80gb HD). I want to remove OS X as Im at the limit of 40gb on Windows and I have not logged on to Mac OS X since installed Win7 (dont flame me). So I want to delete OS X partition and expand my win partition to 80gb BUT I still would like to be able to regularly (once a week/month) backup my Windows 7 partition - its took a while to setup everything up right - not just docs and programs - so when the hard drive dies I want to be able to restore the partition and boot away, (the daily volatile bits I can pull down from dropbox and project from soure control). With Mac OS X I could use Winclone - and this worked flawless last time the HD failed with XP but with the absence of OS X I will need something else. Im thinking can I use a Linux Live boot CD along with an external USB hard drive. Boot from CD and then dd? the partition to the USB? What linux distro live CD should I use? I say dd as if I know what am taking about (I dont) is this the best way to backup a partition (when it will be restored to same hardware as bootable) ? What command?
