  • CSS hover behavior inconsistent on desktop/mobile devices [migrated]

    I have a strange problem: This page looks good on desktop browsers, but the hovering effect does not seem to work correctly on at least my CM7 Android 2.3.7 device. I know hovering is not supposed to work on touch displays as it does with a mouse, but I'd like to have touch feedback, i.e. the highlight color should show once the user has tapped a menu item. This does work when the link is just a href="#" but it does not when it is a real link. I tried all sorts of stuff as you can see, to no avail. If you go back in the browser history after having tapped a real link, the item is highlighted, so the browser understands the CSS I am throwing at it. However, the javascript alert makes it clear that it only seems to interpret the link opening action and does not care about the color changing stuff. Weird that is.     Yep, looks like iOS5 introduces a centralized messaging system: the Notification Center. Wonder where they got that idea from? Seriously, way to go though; this matches and probably betters what I really like about Android’s notifications system. I’ll have to check it out myself, though. Application UX's own research confirmed the centralized approach as something users wanted in research last year. This feature will really help the iOS in the enterprise user market too. Up to now, iOS is pretty dismal in the notifications space IMO.

  • Mobile (Client) to Amazon S3 (Server) - Architecture

    let's start off with the problem statement: My iOS application has a login form. When the user logs in, a call is made to my API and access granted or denied. If access was granted, I want the user to be able to upload pictures to his account and/or manage them. As storage I've picked Amazon S3, and I figured it'd be a good idea to have one bucket called "myappphotos" for instance, which contains lots of folders. The folder names are hashes of a user's email and a secret key. So, every user has his own, unique folder in my Amazon S3 bucket. Since I've just recently started working with AWS, here's my question: What are the best practices for setting up a system like this? I want the user to be able to upload pictures directly to Amazon S3, but of course I cannot hard-code the access key. So I need my API to somehow talk to Amazon and request an access token of sorts - only for the particular folder that belongs to the user I'm making the request for. Can anyone help me out and/or guide me to some sources where a similar problem was addressed? Don't think I'm the first one and the amazon documentation is so extensive that I don't really know where to start looking. Thanks a lot!

    I have an online presentation to do next week and I have it all ready to go. The website is html and css only (no db), and currently resides on my shared hosting account. Now although my shared hosting is (relatively) reliable, I have noticed that recently they have been making some changes and my website has been unavailable at times. I don't want this to happen to me on the morning of my presentation, so I am asking what is the best way to prepare for such a thing? My domain is www.presentation.mydomain.com and I would like to keep this if possible (even if issues arise). I have been thinking of a few alternatives; host my site on two different domains or servers (but what about domain name)? have a portable XAMPP version on a USB (again, domain name)? possible fail-over site/location? Any advice or suggestions are welcome. Update Presentation will be carried out on their laptop, not mine. So I am unable to install any software.

    I'm writing a little game in as3 using Starling, and I need to check collision between 2 boats that can rotate. I don't need the pixel perfect collision, but bounds collision is not enough too. The boat look more or less like this: I was thinking about create one square on the back of the boat and a triangle on the front, than for each boat, check if the square collide with the other boat square or triangle, and the same for the triangle. I just don't know how to do that, I don't know if it's possible with the Shape.hitTest, or if it's the best way to do that. What can I do?
