• Automatically inserting new fields in a web.config file

  I have an ASP.NET project which has already some custom fields in it's web.config file. I've added in it three more fields and used them in my changes, and it's working great. But where it needs to be used, there aren't these thre fields in the web.config (this was expected, I've just added by hand for tests and developing). How do I check the existance of fields in web.config, and in case of not finding it, how do I add it permanently to the web.config ? Thank you

The intent is to teach programming concepts in the students' native language before introducing English-based mainstream languages. What would be be the best approach? Run recursion down and up for every node? The data structure of every treenode is a list of children, list of parents. (the type of children and parents are treenodes) Clarification: Group defined if there is a kind of "closure" between nodes where root itself is not part of the closure. As you can see from the graph you can't travel from pink to other nodes (you CAN NOT use root). From brown node you can travel to it's child so this form another group.   I have a Grails web application (just a standard war file) deployed on a Ubuntu 10.10 server running on tomcat 6. My database is postgresql. The problem is that every so often (once or twice a day after inactivity) when I try to log into this web application it just freezes. I can navigate to the login page but when I try and login (first time the DB is hit, might be a clue..?) the application just freezes indefinitely, no 500 response code... the browser just waits and waits. I followed the instructions detailed here because the problem described sounded the same as mine. My GC logging showed no long running GC, all sub sec. • Microsoft Web Farm Framework 502 error

  My apologies if this is a really stupid question, but I have installed and set up the new Microsoft Web Farm Framework in a UAT environment with a controller machine, a primary, and a secondary server. I have installed one of our in-house applications on to the primary server and it has been successfully provisioned across to the secondary. I have tried accessing the server via the url http:\mis-uat-002\testfarm\reviewer where mis-uat-002 is the name of the farm controller, testfarm is the name of the farm, and reviewer is the name of the application. When using this url I get a "502 - Web server received an invalid response while acting as a gateway or proxy server." error. If I access the application directly via http:\mis-uat-003\reviewer (mis-uat-003 is the primary farm server, reviewer is the application) then it works no problem. Is there some additional set up that needs to be done in order for the farm controller to do its job? It should be noted that this is a UAT environment so is not on a domain of any sort. However, if this was successful and the WFF came out with V1.0 fairly soon, we would be looking to run this on a Windows 2008 domain.

• Development on Windows 7; Web server on Linux - How to share Apache web root?

  I've got a LAMP server that I want to use as a local web server. I've got a Windows 7 machine that I want to use as my development machine. The machines will be on the same LAN (or the Windows box will be VPNed into the LAN). My questions is, what is the best way of sharing the web root of the LAMP server so that I can edit the files on the remote Windows 7 machine and how do I go about configuring this on the Linux machine? (Fedora 16) I would like the solution to be as easy to use as possible with preferably no extra steps required to save/edit/upload files from my IDE on my Windows 7 machine. I'm thinking either a Samba or NFS share are the way to go but I'm concerned I'm going to run into issues with permissions and unix/windows file handling. Is one better than ther other for my use case or is there a better alternative solution? I'm currently using Windows 7 Professional which doesn't have NFS support but would upgrade to Ultimate which does have NFS support if it's the best solution.

• Tracking down the cause of a web service fault running in IIS

  I have built a web service in Visual Studio 2008, and deployed it on IIS 7 running on Windows Server 2008 R2. It has been extensively tested, handles all errors gracefully and logs any uncaught errors to a file using log4net. The system normally runs perfectly, but occasionally (2 or 3 times a day) a fault occurs and screws up the application which needs an iisreset to get it working again. When the fault occurs I get some random errors that are caught by my catch-all error log, such as: Value cannot be null. Could not convert from type 'System.Boolean' to type 'System.DateTime'. Sequence contains no elements These errors are raised on every request until I manually do an iisreset, but there is no sight of them when the system is running normally. The web service is a stateless request-response application. Nothing is stored in the session. It could be load related, but I doubt it as there are only around 30 or 40 requests per minute. This is proving very tricky to track down. I can't work out what is putting IIS into this bad state, and why it needs an iisreset to get it working again. Nothing is reported in the event log. Can anyone suggest how to enable more extensive logging that might catch this fault? Also, does anyone know what might be causing the problem?

• Copy a website and preserve the file & folder structure

  I have an old web site running on an ancient version of Oracle Portal that we need to convert to a flat-html structure. Due to damage to the server we are not able to access the administrative interface, and even if we could there is no export functionality that can work with modern software versions. It would be enough to crawl the website and have all the pages & images saved to a folder, but the file structure needs to be preserved; that is, if a page is located at http://www.oldserver.com/foo/bar/baz/mypage.html then it needs to be saved to /foo/bar/baz/mypage.html so that the various Javascript bits will continue to function. None of the web crawlers I've found have been able to do this; they all want to rename the pages (page01.html, page02.html etc) and break the folder structure. Is there any crawler out there that will recreate the site structure as it appears to a user accessing the site? It doesn't need to redo any of teh content of the pages; once rehosted the pages will all have the same names they did originally so links will continue to work.

The home page of the application is fetched with the following url: http://local.dev/myapp/index.shtml When the app runs, javascript on the webpage maintains the url and the app state internally. Some of the other urls read as: http://local.dev/myapp/results?param1=val1&param2=val2 http://local.dev/myapp/someResource Note that there are no pages named results.html or someResource.html on my web server. They are just made up URLs to simulate RESTfulness in the single page app. All the app code - javascript, css etc - is present in the index.shtml file So, essentially, the question is how can I redirect all requests to the first URL above? • SharePoint Web Analytics not tracking usage for main application

  My SP 2010 setup is two separate applications - one for the main portal and one for MySite. Whilst WebAnalytics is tracking usage of MySite it's not showing any stats for the main Portal. The only thing it lists is the number of site collections but no page views etc. The WA service is clearly running to pick up data for MySite. In Configure web analytics and health data collection everything is ticked. I can't find any obvious settings that are different between the two applications. Where should I look to get usage tracking correctly? Edit: Having played with the date ranges I see that actually I've got no stats in the last 7 days for any site at all including MySite which has been working at some point previously. Edit: What does each service (WA Data Processing Service vs WA Web Services) do and where should they be active? At present they're both running on an App server but not on the WFEs (although they were running on WFEs previously). From what I can gather than only need to run on an App server but I find it strange that the only logged activity I see in the staging database relates to Central Admin URLs on the App server and nothing from the WFEs.

• Windows/IIS Hosting :: How much is too much?

  I have 4 Windows 2003 servers running IIS 6. These servers host a bunch of unique web sites (in that they are all different in build/architecture/etc). The code behind these sites range from straight HTML, classic ASP, and 1.1/2.0/3.x flavors of .NET. Some (most) of the sites use a SQL backend, which is hosted on one or two different servers – not the IIS servers themselves. No virtualization on these servers and no load balancing for these particular sites. The problem I’m running into is coming up with some baseline metrics to determine, or basically come up with a “baseline score” to know when a web server has reached its hosting limit. Today, some basic information about each server is used: how much bandwidth does the server pump out, hard drive space availability, and basic (very basic) RAM & CPU utilization (what it looks like at peak traffic times.) I would be grateful if those of you that are 1000x smarter than I am could indulge me with your methods of managing IIS environments. Whether performance monitoring specifics, “score” determination as I’m trying to determine, or the obvious combination of both. Thanks in advance.

• IIS7 can't read web.config on shared Mac filesystem

  I'm running a VirtualBox virtualized Windows 2008 Server on my Mac, just finished setting it up today. On it, I have SQL Server 2008, IIS and ColdFusion 9. I want to serve websites from my Mac filesystem (for development purposes). So I created a new website in IIS and pointed it at the appropriate path using a UNC path: \vboxsvr\rob\Sites\testsite, which contains the ColdFusion code and a web.config file. When I attempt to modify the file at all, or view the site in a web browser, I get an error: HTTP 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid. I did some Googling, and found several similar problems, but nothing exactly like I have. The closest one seemed to indicate permissions. So I recreated the site and set it up to allow the Administrator (in Windows) to access the stuff. That didn't help. I can read/modify the files just fine from within Windows, but IIS itself can't seem to do it. What do I need to do to fix this? Thanks!

  This is really two questions one leading into the other. Firstly what does 'Permission denied to access property 'href' from a non-chrome context' actually mean? • Cronjob as root?

  I'm having a bit of a problem with cronjobs for backups. I do it this way: groups root (here comes a list of groups in which root user is) usermod -a -G group1 paul usermod -a -G group2 paul usermod -a -G group3 paul ... All the 'group1', 'group2', 'group3' are seen in the group list of root user. However, after adding 'paul' to all groups above, he still can not write to directories shared by root user with mod 770. Did I do it wrongly?

  When I SSH into a linux box, I want to have the /etc/profile file save the results of the whoami command to a global environment variable. if I were to go root with the command sudo su -, I do not want that command to run again when gonig root, I want it to stick with the result of whoami as my regular username from before I went root, and I need to access that variable as the root user even though it will run the /etc/profile file again when I go root. What can I do to only run that command once in the /etc/profile command?

• Server refuses to boot when Raid5 disk is disconnected - /root/ missing

  I recently set up a NAS server running a Debian OS (6.0.4) It contains 4 disks, 3 of them are in a Raid5 array, while the last one is used for the OS. To simulate a disk-failure I unplugged one of the raid disks, which resulted in the OS being unable to boot. It started the boot, recognized that md0 (the raid array) was running on 2/3 disks, and then threw a few errors. It was unable to find the following directories: /dev/root on /root, /dev on /root/dev, /sys on /root/sys, /proc on /root/proc It appears this happens regardless of which raid disk is removed. • USB Hub and Ubuntu

  I have a powered 7 port hub connected to my Ubuntu box and it does nothing. The devices (zip drive and web cam) work direct, but aren't recognized through the hub. This worked fine in Windows 7.
