• UFW blocks SSL connections Varnish/Apache2 on Ubuntu 12.04

  I have installed Virtualmin on a Ubuntu 12.04 server and I'm using LAMP stack with Varnish (:80) in front of Apache (:8000). However, I cannot access https when UFW is enabled. When I disable UFW, all works fine.   I've recently read the following paragraph, and wondered: how you would organise the data (possibly Column A = country, Column B = salary, Column C = tax paid) but what formulas/calculations are used to work out these types of % figures: In country Y the top 0.5% of taxpayers pay 17% of total income tax. In country X the top 0.1% of taxpayers pay 8% of total income tax and in country Z, the top 1% pay about 40% of total federal income tax. I've gone through the help files and searched within Excel websites but I'm struggling to find an answer. %'s interest and trouble me... Any pointers or examples very welcome. Thanks Mike

• Samba setup to request password reset on first time login

  Is it possible to setup Samba to ask for password reset when the user first logs in without the need to setup a domain controller? Would this work properly with Windows clients or with clients using Linux with file managers like Krusader or Nautilus? Could somebody give me a few pointers how to implement this if is possible? I'm pretty new to Samba and I use it as a file server and I would like to have such a feature on it, but I'm not sure if it's possible. Thanks!

  I am evaluating the possibilities of moving my organisation to Mercurial, however I am stumbling on 2 basic requirements which I can't find proper pointers to. How do I set up Mercurial's central repository to authenticate users with the central active directory and only allow them to push or pull if they have the right credentials? How do I set up a Mercurial project repository to only allow users pertaining to a specific group to push / pull source code? We need this to have per-project authorisation. On which HTTP servers (IIS or Apache etc.) are the above 2 requirements supported? Apologies if I am asking something obvious or if I am missing something fundamental about how authentication and authorisation works. Thanks.

• Which OS/distributions have 64-bit kernel and 32-bit userspace? [closed]

  Which OS (or distributions) comes with 64-bit kernels (x86_64, SPARC64, PPC64, ..smth else?..) and 32-bit userland? I want all small userspace programs (like ls, cat, etc) to be 32-bit, because they really no needs to be 64-bit. But OS kernel must be 64bit for using =3 Gb of RAM. Also database programs (when using a lot of memory) can be 64bit. 64bit mode can hurt some programs, makes them bigger, eating (wasting) memory on pointers (especially in big abstract datatypes like list, tree, etc). 64 bit programss WASTES twice memory on EACH Pointer. I don't want it. And the Question is not "Are the 32-bit programs needed when 64-bit porcessor is available". Question is "What OS comes with 32 bit userspace and kernels in 32/64 bit mode". Examples of such OS includes: Solaris/SPARC64, MACOSX/X86_64 (10.5)/....

• Connecting Windows XP to Windows 7 directly using cable

  These are the problems I am encountering. XP can access Windows 7, not the other way around (which is fine, because I don't need it the other way currently) File transfer is too slow like 0.031 MB/s even though netperf and netCPS list around 8-9 MB/s. I disabled firewall on both computers. Both are same workgroup. I left homegroup on Windows 7. Windows 7 sees the connection as unidentified network. 10.1.1.2 (XP) and 10.1.1.1 (Windows 7) Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Default gateway and DNS are empty for both of them. Both computer are connected to internet using wireless (using home network), and both of them are connected to each other using wire! If anybody has any pointers, do let me know. I have no problem doing such setup with both computers being Windows 7. This time one of them is XP though, and that seems to be the problem.

• upgraded to OSX 10.6.6 - now cannot sudo

  I've been using sudo until now. After an upgrade to 10.6.6, now sudo gives me incorrect password. My user has admin rights, and i can execute admin functions from the GUI (such as System Prefs, updating software etc). However, within Terminal, sudo has stopped accepting the password. I have repaired permissions and restarted. Some pointers ask me to use Directory Utility, but in this version it does not have a "set root user" option. I downloaded ServerAdminTool 10.5.7 but this does not work on my system. Some say to add myself to "wheel" group, but i need sudo for that. Some say if i am in admin group, i should be able to sudo, but this is not happening. (Using OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.6, earlier 10.5.8) MODERATOR: please delete this question. The issue had to do with Textpander expanding the password resulting in sudo failing. Not an OS upgrade issue.

I've got a domain lets call it app.company.com (a sub-domain company.com of course) that is setup to redirect to my IIS 6 web server. I would like to set up one website in IIS for each client that will use this application. And have the URL schema be like this: app.company.com/clientA -- would point to ClientA website in IIS app.company.com/clientB -- would point to ClientB website in IIS Do you guys have any pointers or best practices for my scenario?

• sendmail: how can I restrict access to clients that only have a valid certificate?

  I want to reject all connections that don't present a valid SSL/TLS certificate. First of all is the access db file the correct one to be changing? I have already tried using the basic rule given in the documentation CertIssuer:/C=US/ST=California/O=endmail.org/OU=private/CN= Darth+20Mail+20+28Cert+29/[email protected] RELAY This will obviously need a rule afterward to filter and reject all that don't present the cert? • Re-using port 443 for another service - is it possible?

  The ultimate goal is to allow a remote data connection service to operate on port 443 on a the SQL server. The application accessing the connection is behind a firewall and it is because of the client's reluctance to open another port that I have been asked to try and get this working. The current environment is Windows 2003 R2 (SP2) and SQL Server 2005. IIS is not installed, but when I try and install the third party connection software (SequeLink) it won't as it reports something is still configured on/using port 443. Netstat does not show anything listening on the port and I've tried editing the system32\drivers\etc\services file removing any reference to port 443 and also using sc delete to delete the HTTP and HTTPFilter (HTTP SSL in services console) services to see if this would help. Rebooting after each change. What could still be using the port? Is what I'm trying even possible (I have my doubts but have to investigate every avenue)? Any help/pointers would be greatly appreciated.

  Hi a friend of mine is asking about the request which can for example be found here: http://www.geoidee.ch/geodata/geoserver-2.0.0/logs/2010_11_23.request.log His original message: On a couple of hundred web sites worldwide, one of the 50 most popular "File not found" error 404 is caused by the following request: "GET http://66.196.81.202/error/vote HTTP/1.0" It originates from a user agent that purports to be an iPhone. The two requests that hit my servers appeared to originate near Frankfort, Germany. The IP address in the request is part of Yahoo although I doubt that Yahoo had any intentional part. fe1.buzz.vip.re1.yahoo.com The HTTP request has a host header 66.196.81.202 and a X-Forwarded-For of 96.6.99.16 and my IP address I expected to be able to do a Google search and find some kind of security bulletin on it, but I found nothing. • Adding a single 300Gb SCSI drive to poweredge 2850

  I have a 2850 setup with 3 146Gb drives, two partitions 1 12GB system with server 2003 sp2 and 1 261Gb Data. I am strapped on disk space on the data partition having to push data around. I wanted to add a 300Gb single drive for lesser critical data, is this possible? Or is it best to add 2 300Gb drives for another RAID 1 configuration? This is my church network and while it is mission critical it is not enterprise so I can take it down for a few hours. Any pointers to documentation or direct help would be greatly appreciated. John

• Different output by df and du

  I have an old RHEL 5.5 Box, When I fire df -kh I see that /var is of 49 GB with 100 % usage. But then I go inside the /var cd /var and I fire du -kh I see that only total 300 MBs are used. I am not able to get it. Is is possible that this partition is shared with different partition? I see that /opt is also of 49 GB. I think that they are same partition. I need to free /var to start mysql but there is hardly anything to be deleted. Any pointers?

  Hi guys. I'm appologizing in advance to the guys who will tell me this isn't a tech/server/IT issue! But I've been beating my head around this for a couple of days now. I'm trying figure out who to talk to, or which company I can approach to try to see if there are Grid/Cloud Computing companies who have programs setup to deal with colleges. I'm dealing with a compsci course, and we're looking at a few projects that would require a great deal of computing/computational resources. But in calling different companies (HP/Rackspace/etc..) I'm either not getting through to the right depts, or to the right people, or the companies just aren't setup for this. There are plenty of companies who have discounts for desktop software/hardware, but who in the biz deals with discounts/offerings for Cloud/Grid Computing solutions?? • Serial port access errors in WINE

  Hello, I have a setup in which I use a USB serial adapter + some application which sends and receives data using that serial usb. But this setup which works on a Windows, or even in a VMWare Virtual windows, does not work under WINE. IT transmits data but i cannot receive data. The cable and the applications are same as in the working and non-working scenarios. I guess The fact that the application works over the USB serial cable just as fine under Virtual Windows(VMware running on linux) by mapping /dev/ttyUSB to the com port, no external software/DLL needed, means it does not need any specific driver. (Am I correct in this assumption that application doesnt need any driver?) (I also tried with a different setup(different USB serial adapter + different application under WINE, but even that does not work under WINE, but it works fine under WIndows/Virtual Windows) How can I get it working under WINE? Any pointers appreciated.

• Tomcat and IIS6 on one server, multiple websites

  Windows Server 2003 with IIS6 and Tomcat 6.0.26. Three sites running on this server. One is PHP, one is ASP and the third uses Tomcat. The first two work flawlessly. The third is being a pain. Tomcat is installed and if called on the server itself by IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8080 shows the welcome page. Calling the same address from an external machine gives a 'could not connect' error. Calling the ip address from within the server on standard port 80 gives me an error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE). Have tried using httpcfg to force listening only on ports within the ip range I'm using in a manner similar to question 35650 located here on serverfault but with no success. There are actually ten ip addresses on this machine but I'm only using three of them at this point. Any pointers on troubleshooting this would be appreciated!

• How do I set up a shared internet on a network using computer hooked up to a router

  I got a wireless broadband modem (Huawei E1750) hooked up to my computer (call it A., running Windows-7) whose internet I wish to share to my other computer (call it B., also running Windows-7). A. is hooked up to my d-link DIR-600 router using a wired connection to port 1 on the router. B. is connected to the router using a wireless connection. Now I have tried setting up the sharing according to the help files for ICS but I have not been able to get it working. I suspect that there is something in my hardware configuration that is making it difficult. I would appreciate some tips and pointers as to what could be the reason to my problems.

  Hi, I'm working with Drupal for the first time and trying to figure out how to change the Menu item names through the Administer Site Building configuration menus. I have logged into the Drupal admin site and navigated to Administer/ Site Building/ Menus, select the menu item and click Edit, change the Title from , 'About' to 'About Us' however when loading the site page it still says 'About' Please pardon my lack of understanding on drupal, i am somewhat familiar with joomla another CMS however I just need some pointers in the right direction as to how to edit the links and rename them within drupal. the links are not images as far as i can tell while viewing the source and properties on the links.   hi. sorry to have to ask such a basic question!! i've got fedora 13, trying to figure out how to change the "I Beam" pointer. earlier, i had a "thin" "I Beam" pointer in my gedit/term windows. now, I have a "thicker/shadow" kind of "I Beam" pointer when i move the mouse over the gedit/term windows. obviously, i've made some change, but i can't figure out what I changed, or where this attribute is set. i've checked google/irc, as well as looked through the "system-preferences-appearance" with no luck.. i saw the customize part of the gui, and could resize the "arrow" but nothing for the "I-Beam". this isn't critical, but it is anoying!! any thoughts/pointers would be helpful. thanks

• EloTouch touchscreen suspends correctly but does not come out of standby on Ubuntu 10.04

  I am using an EloTouch touchscreen on a minimal Ubuntu 10.04 installation. I have a bare Xserver running without any desktop environment, just an xterm. The touchscreen is working great, but there is still one small problem. As soon as the touchscreen goes to standby, it is not coming out of standby when touching the screen. Using a keyboard or mouse does get it out of standby though. I am looking for any hints or directions to a cause of this problem. Is this an x.org configuration problem? A driver problem? Is this a known problem with touchscreens in general? Any pointers are welcome. The driver I am using is an unreleased EloTouch driver (3.5.0). I received it through a reseller who can not give me any technical information unfortunately.

• Block access to certain websites from other computers on shared internet connection

  I have very little knowledge about networking. I have an internet connection on my PC (running Windows XP). I've enabled internet connection sharing to other computers on my network connected using a WIFI router. I want to block use of GMail (in general, specific domains) from other computers, but should be able to access them from my own machine. I can't edit my hosts file because my machine too would lose access. I guess I need to configure my wireless router for that. But I have no idea how to do so. My wireless router is a Zyxel P-660HW-T1 v2. I'd appreciate any pointers.

• How to clear stuck locked maildrop pop3 process

  I am using cyrus for imap and pop One of my users is getting the following error: Unable to lock maildrop : Mailbox is locked by POP server. I can see where it starts in the log. I've read that there is no physical lock file anymore (i've tried looking for it anyways) and that the solution is to just wait for the timeout, or kill the offending pop3 process. I know that this is happening because of a lossy connection on the part of the affected user, and that pop3 can only have 1 session active at a time. I need to manually clear the lock and I am having trouble finding the offending pop process. I have tried lsof, but it doesn't say how long the individual files (sockets) have been opened for. I've reduced the tcp keepalive time down to 5 mins, but I still need to reset this guy's lock. I could use some pointers. Thanks!

• AWS SSL Load Balancer

  OK, I am looking for some pointers. Basically I have a white-label app/site that will allow users to setup their own domain to use for their customer front-end. We have 2 dedicated servers and a load balancer. The problem is SSL, we were thinking about using AWS ELB to handle the SSL loadbalancing, but cant seem to figure out if it will properly handle it, it seems to be setup to work with EC2 instances, but we are using externally hosted servers via a loadbalancer. A blog post by AWS looks similar to what we need but it only seems to work with EC2 instances. http://aws.typepad.com/aws/2011/08/elastic-load-balancer-ssl-support-options.html Anyone had experience setting ELS SSL load balancers up to work with external servers?
