  I've never seen this done, but i get a feeling that there's gotta be a clever way of doing it. css font-size-adjust looks like it was never meant to be, but when i look around I'm seeing some really ingenious css techniques going on. • Question about varrying top margin when using custom Fonts on the iPhone.

  I am using FontLabel to display varying lengths of texts in a custom font. I size the FontLabel using the following : CGSize size = [myString sizeWithFont:[UIFont systemFontOfSize:[[[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate] getFontSize]] constrainedToSize:CGSizeMake(290, 4000) lineBreakMode:UILineBreakModeWordWrap]; For some reason, this always presents a Fontlabel where the text starts at a different space from the top. Sometimes the text begins at the correct location. Other times, it appears either too high or too low. Would appreciate some help in how to solve this issue.

• Why my Ldirectord check multiple times on read server every interval?

  I have a Ldirectord server and two real servers. My ldirectord used to check the request page on real server once in every interval, but now I found that it check four times. I have monitored the log on both real servers, they have the same problem. • How to design a data model that deals with (real) contracts?

  I was looking for some advice on designing a data model for contract administration. The general life cycle of a contract is thus: Contract is created and in a "draft" state. It is viewable internally and changes may be made. Contract goes out to vendor, status is set to "pending" Contract is rejected by vendor. At this state, nothing can be done to the contract. No statuses may be added to the collection. Contract is accepted by vendor. At this state, nothing can be done to the contract. No statuses may be added to the collection. I obviously want to avoid a situation where the contract is accepted and, say, the amount is changed. The VendorContractStatus is mapped as a many-to-one in Nhibernate. I then use a custom validator as described here. If anything but draft is returned in the VendorContractStatus collection, no changes are allowed. Furthermore the VendorContractStatus must follow the correct workflow (you can add a rejected after a pending, but you can't add anything else to the collection if a reject or accepted exists, etc.). All sounds alright? Well a colleague has argued that we should simply add an "IsDraft" bool property to VendorContract and not accept updates if IsDraft is false. Then we should setup a method inside of VendorContractStatus for updating the status, if something gets added after a draft, it sets the IsDraft property of VendorContract to false. I do not like this as it feels like I'm dirtying up the POCOs and adding logic that should persist in the validation area, that no rules should really exist in these classes and they shouldn't be aware of their states. Any thoughts on this and what is the better practice from a DDD perspective? From my view, if in the future we want more complex rules, my way will be more maintainable over the long run. Say we have contracts over a certain amount to be approved by a manager. I would think it would be better to have a one-to-one mapping with a VendorContractApproval class, rather than adding IsApproved properties, but that's just speculation. This might be splitting hairs, but this is the first real gritty enterprise software project we've done. Any advice would be appreciated!

Why am I getting Bars is invalid versus the error messages displayed above, ["Real can't be blank", "Real you must supply a valid email"] etc. My controller simply has a respond_to method with the following in it: format.xml { render :xml => @foo.errors, :status => :unprocessable_entity } How do I have this output the real error messages so the user has some insight into what they did wrong?

• Why does Font.registerFont throw an error the second time a swf is loaded?

  I've found an issue (in flash cs5) when using TLFTextfields and fonts shared at runtime, and I wondered if anyone has a solution. Here's the scenario. Fonts.swf: library for fonts (runtime shared DF4) Popup.swf: popup with a TLFTextfield (with text in it) using a font from Fonts.swf Main.swf : the main swf with a button that loads and unloads Popup.swf (using Loader or SafeLoader give the same results) Nice and simple, Run main.swf, click button and the popup appears with the text. Click the button again to remove the popup. All well and good now click the button again and I get the following error. ArgumentError: Error #1508: The value specified for argument font is invalid. at flash.text::Font$/registerFont() at Popup_fla::MainTimeline()[Popup_fla.MainTimeline::MainTimeline:12] I'm presuming it's happening because the font is already registered (checked when clicking before the load). Does anyone know how to get past this?   I am curious as to why installing PlayOnLinux entails removing seemingly unrelated packages like google-earth-stable. Is this the expected behaviour?   I upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 from 12.04 and every time I use apt-get install for any package it ends with a bunch of errors about processing some of my latex packages. Including a snippet below: Sometimes, not accepting conffile updates in /etc/texmf/updmap.d causes updmap-sys to fail. Please check for files with extension .dpkg-dist or .ucf-dist in this directory dpkg: error processing package tex-common (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of lmodern: lmodern depends on tex-common (>= 3); however: Package tex-common is not configured yet. • Why does Google's closure library not use real private members?

  I've been a JavaScript developer for a while now, and I've always thought that the correct way to implement private members in JavaScript is to use the technique outlined by Doug Crockford here: http://javascript.crockford.com/private.html. I didn't think this was a particularly controversial piece of JavaScript wisdom, until I started using the Google Closure library. Imagine my surprise... the library makes no effort to use Crockford-style information hiding. All they do is use a special naming convention and note "private" members in the documentation. I'm in the habit of assuming that the guys at Google are usually on the leading edge of software quality, so what gives? Is there some downside to following Mr. Crockford's advice that's not obvious?

• Is regex too slow? Real life examples where simple non-regex alternative is better

  I've seen people here made comments like "regex is too slow!", or "why would you do something so simple using regex!" (and then present a 10+ lines alternative instead), etc. I haven't really used regex in industrial setting, so I'm curious if there are applications where regex is demonstratably just too slow, AND where a simple non-regex alternative exists that performs significantly (maybe even asymptotically!) better. Obviously many highly-specialized string manipulations with sophisticated string algorithms will outperform regex easily, but I'm talking about cases where a simple solution exists and significantly outperforms regex. What counts as simple is subjective, of course, but I think a reasonable standard is that if it uses only String, StringBuilder, etc, then it's probably simple.

• Changing the background color of a view in real-time.

  Hey Everyone, I am trying to implement a ListView that is composed of rows that contain a View on the left followed by a TextView to the right of that. I want to be able to change the background color of the first View based on it's position in the ListView. • Unable to boot Ubuntu 13.10 (nVidia GTX 770m and Intel HD 4600)

  Ever since I bought this laptop I've been trying to install Ubuntu on it. It came with W8 preinstalled. Up to this point, I've been able to boot in UEFI mode with a black screen. I can tell it's trying to use the nVidia card (there's a led on the computer, depending on the color you can tell which GPU is using) and if I press crtl+alt+F1 I can go to console mode. Taking this advantage I tried to install bumblebee and after a successful install the led that indicates which GPU is being used change, indicating that it switched to the Intel HD 4600 graphics. After the installation I tried to initiate the graphic interface (startx) with no success. I also saved the dsmeg output to see if it can be of any help. In order to be able to get to this stage I had to boot with nomodeset option and removed quiet and splash. Anyone got this same error? Any guidance? I've tried other linux distros and so far the only one that is able to boot is Opensuse 12.3 without any issues (but only when I switch to legacy mode instead of UEFI).

  I connected TV to my computer, and trying to set dual display. Whatever resolution I choose for my second display (TV) I get message like this: The selected configuration for displays could not be applied required virtual size does not fit available size: requested=(2704, 1050), minimum=(320, 200), maximum=(1680, 1680) How can I fix this? Also, while I was experimenting system went to deadlock, I restarted and after boot monitor just turns off once system is up. • How do I get developers to treat test code as "real" code?

  In the last two companies I've been at, there is an overriding mentality among developers that it's okay to write unit tests in a throw-away style. Code that they would never write in the actual product suddenly becomes OK in the unit tests. I'm talking Rampant copying and pasting between tests Code styling rules not followed Hard-coded magic strings across tests No object-oriented thought or design for integration tests, mocks or helper objects (250 line single-function tests!) .. and so on. I'm highly dissatisfied with the quality of the test code. Generally we do not do code reviews on our test assemblies, and we also do not enforce style or code analysis of them on our build server. Is that the only way to overcome this inertia about test quality? I'm looking for ideas to take to our developers, without having to go to higher management saying that we need to use resources for enforcement of test quality (although I will if I have to). Any thoughts or similar experiences?

• How to program a real-time accurate audio sequencer on the iphone?

  Hi... I want to program a simple audio sequencer on the iphone but I can't get accurate timing. The last days I tried all possible audio techniques on the iphone, starting from AudioServicesPlaySystemSound and AVAudioPlayer and OpenAL to AudioQueues. In my last attempt I tried the CocosDenshion sound engine which uses openAL and allows to load sounds into multiple buffers and then play them whenever needed. Here is the basic code: init: int channelGroups[1]; channelGroups[0] = 8; soundEngine = [[CDSoundEngine alloc] init:channelGroups channelGroupTotal:1]; int i=0; for(NSString *soundName in [NSArray arrayWithObjects:@"base1", @"snare1", @"hihat1", @"dit", @"snare", nil]) { [soundEngine loadBuffer:i fileName:soundName fileType:@"wav"]; i++; } [NSTimer scheduledTimerWithTimeInterval:0.14 target:self selector:@selector(drumLoop:) userInfo:nil repeats:YES]; In the initialisation I create the sound engine, load some sounds to different buffers and then establish the sequencer loop with NSTimer. audio loop: - (void)drumLoop:(NSTimer *)timer { for(int track=0; track<4; track++) { unsigned char note=pattern[track][step]; if(note) [soundEngine playSound:note-1 channelGroupId:0 pitch:1.0f pan:.5 gain:1.0 loop:NO]; } if(++step>=16) step=0; } Thats it and it works as it should BUT the timing is shaky and instable. As soon as something else happens (i.g. drawing in a view) it goes out of sync. As I understand the sound engine and openAL the buffers are loaded (in the init code) and then are ready to start immediately with alSourcePlay(source); - so the problem may be with NSTimer? Now there are dozens of sound sequencer apps in the appstore and they have accurate timing. I.g. "idrum" has a perfect stable beat even in 180 bpm when zooming and drawing is done.
