• Ethics of soliciting App store app reviews?

  I see more than a few developers soliciting 5-star ratings and good reviews for their App store apps, in their blogs, websites, app store descriptions, even dialogs that pop-up in the app after you've used them for awhile. What do people consider to be the ethical guidelines regarding such review and ratings solicitations? What's over the line? (Besides obviously evil stuff, such as paying to have someone forge multiple negative reviews about your competitor's apps, etc.)

• GRUB problem after uninstalling mint

  I've uninstalled Linux Mint 13 today from my netbook. The netbook was running Windows XP and Linux Mint on dual boot. I've deleted the Linux's partition and now whenever I turn on the computer I get "Partitation not found" grub error... I have no CD drive so I can't insert any repair CDs or XP CD. I'm currently hopeless. And now I can't even load Linux Mint from my USB drive... Can someone help me?

• Building package from binary files - what's wrong with my control file

  I'm busy trying to build a .deb package from the binaries of my application (non open source) and I'm having trouble getting the correct info to display in the Ubuntu Software Centre (when you click on the .deb file). Please see screenshot below of control file and Software Centre View. It seems like the package name and the package description is swapped. I'm expecting the part in bold to read "attix5pro" and not "Cloud backup agent". Can someone show my my mistake or guide me?

  I am using IIS7 and trying to optimize as much as possible. I had one suggestion about compression but I am not sure how to turn this on. I am familiar with making changes to Web.Config but not sure about making IIS7 changes. What makes it more difficult is that I am using Windows Azure where new images are created every time I publish. Can someone explain if there's more than one way to turn on compression and how I can do it.

• Complete Beginner to Game Programming and Unreal Engine 4, Looking For Advice [on hold]

  I am currently a 2nd year programming student(Just finished my first year so I will be starting my second year in September) and have mainly learned C and C++ in my classes. In terms of what I know of C++, I know about general inheritance, polymorphism, overloading operators, iterators, a little bit about templates(only class and function templates) etc. but not of the more advanced topics like linked lists and other sequential containers(containers in general I guess), enumerations, most of the standard library(other than like strings and vectors), and probably a bunch of other stuff I dont even know about yet. I subscribed to Unreal Engine 4 as I was very intrigued by their Unreal Tournament announcement earlier this month, especially after hearing that UE4 is going completely C++. Of course my end goal in doing this programming program is to eventually go into game/graphics programming. Since it's my summer off, I thought what better way then to actually apply some of my skills to a personal project so I actually have a firmer understanding of C++ past what my professors tell me. My questions are this: What would be the best way to start off making a small personal game in UE4 as a project for the summer? What should I be aiming for, especially for someone that is still learning C++? Should I focus on making a simple 2D game rather than a 3D one to get started? Seeing the Flappy Chicken showcase intrigued me because before I thought the UE engine was pretty much pigeonholed into being for FPS games What should my expectations be going into UE4 and a game engine for the first time?(UE4 will be my first foray into making a game) What can I expect to gain from making things in UE4, in terms of making games and in terms of further fleshing out my knowledge of C++? Would you recommend I start off 100% using C++ for scripting or using the visual blueprints? Since I'm not a designer, how would I be able to add objects and designs to my game? For someone at my level is retaining the UE4 subscription worth it or is it better to cancel and resub when I learn enough about UE4 and C++? Lastly is there anything to be gained in terms of knowledge/insight through me looking at the source code for UE4? I opened it in VS2013, but noticed that most of the files were C# files and not cpp's. Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer.

I would appreciate it if someone could provide a scissorstack example from an entity class. ie. using scissorstack on PlayerClass such that the map renders around the Player sprite, say 5 tiles. which would then allow me to create a Pawn class and apply same methodology to give a pawn sprite a lower number, like only rendering 1 tile around the location of the pawn.

• Where can I download the Gnome 3 Icons?

  After poking around on the Internet for awhile, I haven't been able to find the default icons used in Gnome 3 anywhere. My requirements are fairly simple: SVGs would be nice, but not necessary This doesn't need to be installable as an icon theme in Ubuntu A compressed folder with all of the icons would be good, but I don't mind browsing a repository and downloading individual icons. As a last resort, I could always download a full Gnome 3 iso and find the icons that way, but hopefully someone knows of a better solution.

• Changing jobs and leaving a project without a leader (aka, me)

  I'm the lead on a project that has been underway for about a year and a half. Two of us have been working on it. One is the database guy. I'm the javascript/ui guy. Which is to say, essentially no overlap in code knowledge. Here's the thing. Someone is about to offer me a sweet job with a nearly 30% bump in pay. Though I am perfectly happy with my current job and love the project, the new one would be better and I can't imagine saying no. The big problem is that my project is supposed to go into production starting in a few weeks. I will consider the new guys to have disqualified the new job by being bad people who would ruin my life if they won't cooperate and let me start after deployment. Since they seem like decent, ethical people, I don't expect that to be a problem. The current project will be brutalized by my absence. I take some comfort in the fact that I have emphatically requested an understudy for at least six months. That puts a little of the responsibility on the boss's head, but still, it's going to be a really bad thing. What do others of you do when you are a critical to a project when it's time to move on? Do I owe any obligation to stick around even though something better shows up? I know my spouse would object if I found someone else. Does that apply to work? I do have an understudy now, though he's fresh out of college. He's not going to replace me anytime soon. It's a small shop and the boss is going to be crushed. I am traumatized in anticipation of telling him and feel guilty about the practical consequences. I'm looking for some solace and some strategy about how to deal with this transition. I will insist on a compromise where I finish the current sprint (about a month from now) but there is at least a half year, probably a year of solid, full-time, work still to be done. But is there a faster way than coding myself? I've never used a CMS but if I do then won't I have to search a plugin for every twitter feature, like support for multiple users, options for following-unfollowing users, retweeting (reposting someone else's post), tagging? And I'm afraid that there might be some licensing issues with CMS.

• Separate Action from Assertion in Unit Tests

  Setup Many years ago I took to a style of unit testing that I have come to like a lot. In short, it uses a base class to separate out the Arrangement, Action and Assertion of the test into separate method calls. You do this by defining method calls in [Setup]/[TestInitialize] that will be called before each test run. [Setup] public void Setup() { before_each(); //arrangement because(); //action } This base class usually includes the [TearDown] call as well for when you are using this setup for Integration tests. [TearDown] public void Cleanup() { after_each(); } This often breaks out into a structure where the test classes inherit from a series of Given classes that put together the setup (i.e. GivenFoo : GivenBar : WhenDoingBazz) with the Assertions being one line tests with a descriptive name of what they are covering [Test] public void ThenBuzzSouldBeTrue() { Assert.IsTrue(result.Buzz); } The Problem There are very few tests that wrap around a single action so you end up with lots of classes so recently I have taken to defining the action in a series of methods within the test class itself: [Test] public void ThenBuzzSouldBeTrue() { because_an_action_was_taken(); Assert.IsTrue(result.Buzz); } private void because_an_action_was_taken() { //perform action here } This results in several "action" methods within the test class but allows grouping of similar tests (i.e. class == WhenTestingDifferentWaysToSetBuzz) The Question Does someone else have a better way of separating out the three 'A's of testing? Readability of tests is important to me so I would prefer that, when a test fails, that the very naming structure of the tests communicate what has failed. If someone can read the Inheritance structure of the tests and have a good idea why the test might be failing then I feel it adds a lot of value to the tests (i.e. GivenClient : GivenUser : WhenModifyingUserPermissions : ThenReadAccessShouldBeTrue). I am aware of Acceptance Testing but this is more on a Unit (or series of units) level with boundary layers mocked. EDIT : My question is asking if there is an event or other method for executing a block of code before individual tests (something that could be applied to specific sets of tests without it being applied to all tests within a class like [Setup] currently does. Barring the existence of this event, which I am fairly certain doesn't exist, is there another method for accomplishing the same thing? Using [Setup] for every case presents a problem either way you go. Something like [Action("Category")] (a setup method that applied to specific tests within the class) would be nice but I can't find any way of doing this.

  When posting a website link in a Facebook wall post, Facebook fetches some content (title, text and image) from the website to show it to readers. Is there a way I can adjust / propose which content is used / preferred by Facebook? I found someone saying to use <meta property="og:image" content="image.jpg">, but this doesn't seem to have any effect. But maybe Facebook caches these results for a while?
