  I want to keep assets that are only used by one view in a view-specific folder, so my Search.aspx properly finds images/*.jpg, and helps me maintain my convention: ~/Areas/Candidate/Views/Job/Search.aspx -> ~/Assets/Candidate/Job/Search/images/*.jpg Perhaps with the ability to easily reference controller- or area-common assets manually or automatically: ~/Assets/Candidate/Job/images/*.jpg ~/Assets/Candidate/images/*.jpg If you wonder why I'm doing this, then speak up; I'm probably missing something. But here's why: I don't want stale static assets sitting in my ASP.NET MVC projects, which I expect to be an automatic outcome of the ~/Assets/Images folder: i.e. As a shared asset loses its last reference-count, who knows to delete it, especially with it being so difficult to trace content link validity in MVC projects? How do you, personally, do this? I can imagine, for example: Implement HtmlHelper extension methods for URL-generation. Extending ViewPage and ViewMasterPage with URL-generation methods. Implementing an inbound request filter to search related folders for static assets. and, are there good libraries out there for this? For example, something that also automatically appends timestamps for .JS and .CSS files, writes the / tags for me, and maybe even that allows me to inject includes in the head section from outside head code?

• Nginx for static files, Apache isn't working now...

  So anything that is a "static file" that exists will just be done with nginx. Otherwise, it should pass it off to Apache. Right now, static files are working correctly. However, if something is passed to apache and it's example.com or subdomain.example.com, apache just spits out the "Apache 2 Test Page" that you get if there's nothing there.   Say I have two threads and an object. One thread assigns the object: public void assign(MyObject o) { myObject = o; } Another thread uses the object: public void use() { myObject.use(); } Does the variable myObject have to be declared as volatile? I am trying to understand when to use volatile and when not, and this is puzzling me. Is it possible that the second thread keeps a reference to an old object in its local memory cache? If not, why not? Thanks a lot.

  I want to have a static Universal binary lib of Boost. (Preferable the latest stable version, that is 1.43.0, or newer.) I found many Google hits with similar problems and possible solutions. However, most of them seems outdated. Also none of them really worked. • var keyword without 'using someNamespace'

  How does Visual Studio/intellisense know what to do with a variable declared as var even if you don't include the necessary using declaration at the top? For example, I have class MyDomainObject defined in a different namespace If I don't declare using TheOtherNameSpace; in the file the following code won't compile: private void Foo() { MyDomainObject myObj = new MyDomainObject(); // Doesn't know what this class is } But if I use var var myObj = new MyDomainObject(); This will compile, and intellisense knows exactly what I can with it. So how the heck does it know what the type is without the using? (And as an aside, if it knows without the using, why do we need usings at all?!)

  Hello I am wondering what algorithm would be clever to use for a tag driven e-commerce enviroment: Each item has several tags. IE: Item name: "Metallica - Black Album CD", Tags: "metallica", "black-album", "rock", "music" Each user has several tags and friends(other users) bound to them. IE: Username: "testguy", Interests: "python", "rock", "metal", "computer-science" Friends: "testguy2", "testguy3" I need to generate recommendations to such users by checking their interest tags and generating recommendations in a sophisticated way. Ideas: A Hybrid recommendation algorithm can be used as each user has friends.(mixture of collaborative + context based recommendations). Maybe using user tags, similar users (peers) can be found to generate recommendations. Maybe directly matching tags between users and items via tags. Any suggestion is welcome. Any python based library is also welcome as I will be doing this experimental engine on python language.

  I have a query that works: DECLARE @ProductID int SET @ProductID = '1234' SELECT DISTINCT TOP 12 a.ProductID FROM A a WHERE a.CategoryID IN (SELECT b.CategoryID FROM B b WHERE b.ProductID = @ProductID) AND a.ProductID != @ProductID It returns a list of 12 product numbers, all unique. I need to store these results in a variable, comma separated, because that's what 3rd party stored procedure needs. So I have this: DECLARE @ProductID int DECLARE @relatedprods varchar(8000) SET @ProductID = '1234' SET @relatedprods = '' SELECT TOP 12 @relatedprods = @relatedprods + CONVERT(VARCHAR(20), a.ProductID) + ', ' FROM A a WHERE a.CategoryID IN (SELECT b.CategoryID FROM B b WHERE B.ProductID = @ProductID) AND a.ProductID != @ProductID SELECT @relatedprods Now, none of these are distinct, but it is returning 12 rows. Now I add the 'distinct' back in, like in the first query: DECLARE @ProductID int DECLARE @relatedprods varchar(8000) SET @ProductID = '1234' SET @relatedprods = '' SELECT DISTINCT TOP 12 @relatedprods = @relatedprods + CONVERT(VARCHAR(20), a.ProductID) + ', ' FROM A a WHERE a.CategoryID IN (SELECT b.CategoryID FROM B b WHERE B.ProductID = @ProductID) AND a.ProductID != @ProductID SELECT @relatedprods Only one product is returned in the comma separated list! • Play framework does not return page and static content

  I'm using play framework in production for one of my web projects. From time to time Play does not render main page or does not return some of the static content files. I have attached few screenshots below. First screenshot displays firebug console, loading of the site is stucked at the beginning, when serving home page. Second screenshot display fiddler console, when 2 static resources are not loading. This issue is hard to reproduce, it happens 1 of 15 time, I have to delete cache data and reload page. (pressing CRTL-F5 in FF). Issue can be reproduced in most of the browsers. Initially, I was thinging that there is something wrong with hosting provider. But I have changed hosting provided and issue has not gone. Version of the play is 1.2.2. Play is running as standalone server. Not sure, but probably deploying Play to Jetty/Tomcat/Resin would help. Also I'm thinging about rewriting application to another stack (well-known for me - j2ee, spring, whatever) I have no idea how to debug and resolve this issue. Any clue ? Has anyone faced same issue with Play before ?

• Reason why a Brand new website is ranking for a top keyword? [on hold]

  Its been noticed, one of our (new)competitor website is ranking 5 for a top keyword with high competition. The website is barely 2 months old. When I checked not much SEO is done on the website other than basic title/desc tags. No backlinks. The website pushed down our website and took its place for the keyword. The only reason that came to my mind is the latest penguin update. Or is the ranking just temporary???, will it eventually be pushed back?? its been holding on for atleast one month and its irritating. Thanks in advance.

  An action method in my ASP.NET MVC2 application returns a JsonResult object and in my unit test I would like to check that the returned JSON object indeed contains the expected values. I tried this: 1. dynamic json = ((JsonResult)myActionResult).Data; 2. Assert.AreEqual(JsonMessagesHelper.ErrorLevel.ERROR.ToString(), json.ErrorLevel); But I get a RuntimeBinderException "'object' does not contain a definition for 'ErrorLevel'". However, when I place a breakpoint on line 2 and inspect the json dynamic variable (see picture below), it obviously does contain the ErrorLevel string and it has the expected value, so if the runtime binder wasn't playing funny the test would pass. What am I not getting? What am I doing wrong and how can I fix this? How can I make the assertion pass?

• What is the advantage to hosting static resources on a separate domain?

  I notice a lot of sites host their resources on a separate domain from the main site, e.g. StackExchange using sstatic.net, Barnes & Noble using imagesbn.com, etc. I understand that there are benefits to putting your static resources on a separate host, possibly with an efficient static-file web server like nginx, freeing up the main server to focus on serving dynamic content. Similarly, outsourcing to a shared CDN like cloudfront Akamai is logical. What is the benefit to using a separate domain otherwise, though? Why sstatic.net instead of static.stackexchange.com? Update: Several answers miss the core question. I understand that there is benefit to splitting between multiple hosts — parallel downloads, slimmer web server, etc. But what is more elusive is why multiple domains. Why sstatic.net rather than static.stackexchange.com as the host for shared resources? So far, only one answer has addressed that.

  Hello, I'm working on a C++ project that produces a lib that other teams use. It's being produced in a few different flavours: Win32 Debug Win32 Debug Static Win32 Release Win32 Release Static x64 Debug x64 Debug Static x64 Release x64 Release Static I'm wondering what the best wisdom is on how to name the dlls and what arguments are for different naming conventions. Do I output the libs into different directories, or do I append some letters on the end of the lib to differentiate them, or something else? One concern is that if I use directories, but don't give all the libs different names, users of the library will have problems where they accidentally use the wrong lib. Are these concerns valid? • Why is JavaMail Transport.send() a static method?

  I'm revising code I did not write that uses JavaMail, and having a little trouble understanding why the JavaMail API is designed the way it is. I have the feeling that if I understood, I could be doing a better job. We call: transport = session.getTransport("smtp"); transport.connect(hostName, port, user, password); So why is Eclipse warning me that this: transport.send(message, message.getAllRecipients()); is a call to a static method? Why am I getting a Transport object and providing settings that are specific to it if I can't use that object to send the message? How does the Transport class even know what server and other settings to use to send the message? It's working fine, which is hard to believe. What if I had instantiated Transport objects for two different servers; how would it know which one to use? In the course of writing this question, I've discovered that I should really be calling: transport.sendMessage(message, message.getAllRecipients()); So what is the purpose of the static Transport.send() method? Is this just poor design, or is there a reason it is this way?

The two overloads of EncryptPasswordAndDoStuff take all the same parameters except for the first parameter, which can either be a string or a SecureString. So method1 and method2 are pretty much identical, they just call different overloads of EncryptPasswordAndDoStuff. Any suggestions? Edit: if I apply Jeff's suggestions, I do the following call in method1: return tryEncryptPassword( (encrypter, publicKey, privateKey) => { var result = new EncryptionResult(); string salt; result.EncryptedValue = encrypter.EncryptPasswordAndDoStuff( rawPassword, publicKey, privateKey, out salt ); result.Salt = salt; return result; }, out errorMessage ); Much the same call is made in method2, just with a different first value to EncryptPasswordAndDoStuff. This is an improvement, but it still seems like a lot of duplicated code.

  Hi guys, I want to check our google postions for several keywords every day and make a note in a spreadseet. At the moment, we have a student doing it but it's a rubbish job and it doesn't seem fair on them! Are there any tools available to automate this process? I have tried rankchecker by seobook.com, but although that should be exactly what im looking for when i set scheduled tasks in that, it doesnt work. Any tips would be appreciated, thanks! peter EDIT: Liam has suggested a Python script to do this, which unfortunately isnt something I'm very familiar with! If anyone knows of a good tutorial or something to help us with this, that would be brilliant. Update: Found a php script at seoscript.net which looks like a step in the right direction. CVector& CVector::operator= (CVector& param) //no const { x=param.x; y=param.y; return *this; } Isn't when something becomes a const, it is unchangeable for the remainder of the applications life ?? How does this differ in operation overloading ???

• delphi "Invalid use of keyword" in TQuery

  I'm trying to populate a TDBGrid with the results of the following TQuery against the file Journal.db: select * from Journal where Journal.where = "RainPump" I've tried both Journal."Where" and Journal.[Where] to no avail. I've also tried: select Journal.[Where] as "Location" - with the same result. Journal.db is a file created by a third party and I am unable to change the field names. The problem is that the field I'm interested in is called 'where' and understandably causes the above error. How do I reference this field without causing the BDE (presumably) to explode?

• Producing a static HTML site from XML content

  I have a long document in XML from which I need to produce static HTML pages (for distribution via CD). I know (to varying degrees) JavaScript, PHP and Python. The current options I've considered are listed here: I'm not ruling out JavaScript, so one option would be to use ajax to dynamically load the XML content into HTML pages. Learn some basic XSLT and produce HTML to the correct spec this way. Produce the site with PHP (for example) and then generate a static site. Write a script (in Python for example) to convert the XML into HTML. This is similar to the XSLT option but without having to learn XSLT. Useful information: The XML will likely change at some point, so I'd like to be able to easily regenerate the site. I'll have to produce some kind of menu for jumping around the document (so I'll need to produce some kind of index of the content). I'd like to know if anyone has any better ideas that I haven't thought of. If not, I'd like you to tell me which of my options seems the most sensible. I think I know what I'm going to do, but I'd like a second opinion. Thanks.
