• Dell Upgrade to 12.04 LTS No wifi, graphic card driver and bluetooth Problem?

  (Dell inspiron m5040 Upgrade to 12.04 LTS from 11.10 wifi wont work and has two bluetooth icons?) Old title of post! No Wifi/Bluetooth Problem. "Both Fixed", see below comments for bluetooth fix and see bottom answer for wifi fix. My online upgrade of 12.04 LTS, was installed to my laptop the Dell inspiron m5040, when it was done i found that my wifi did not even get picked up anymore and i now have two bluetooth icons at the top?? So what i have been doing for now is at the boot screen. I hit the use previous linux version, this works fine but also has the two bluetooth at the top. Is very thankful for any answers for this fix, Thank You. Ok bluetooth problem solved by – fossfreedom answer by deleting the other bluetooth program running in software center. Now the other problem is Wifi: just have to restart system as it works in previous linux version boot opt, but on the first boot screen opt run ubuntu it will not pick up wifi drivers. Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driverfor use with Broadcom's BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4313-, BCM4321-,BCM4322-, BCM43224-, and BCM43225-, BCM43227- and BCM43228-basedhardware. And 3D-accelerated proprietary graphics driver for ATI cards. This driver is required to fully utilise the 3D potential of some ATI graphics cards, as well as provide 2D acceleration of newer cards. will not instill is there anyway for me to make a copy of the drivers via usb HDD and then put them on new upgraded version.

• Ubuntu 12.04 using b43-fwcutter

  I have used 10.04 with the b43-fwcutter driver to drive my BCM4318 Broadcom card (a Linksys WPC54G v3) on my old Dell Inspiron 8100 for two years+ with no troubles. I just upgraded to 12.04 and although everything worked fine after install, before I added the b43-fwcutter driver, once I installed the driver, the system refuses to boot. Even before I install the Linksys card!! It just hangs on boot with graphical garbage on the screen. I tried several attempts to recover the system using the live CD, and finally reinstalled completely. I have been thru the cycle, install fresh system, verify everything works, then install b43-fwcutter and it is hung, several times. Consistent hard fail. The system runs fine on hardwire Ethernet, and wireless was fine on 10.04. But I cannot get there with 12.04. So after several attempts, I am now ready to admit defeat and ask for help. I have read every thread that search turned up, and either the advice is to do what I did, i.e. install fwcutter, or does not apply (Different Broadcom, STA, legacy, whatever) So what do I need to do to fix it? Or is the B43-fwcutter driver broken for 12.04? Thoughts? Tips? Log files needed??

• How to host an AP or a hotspot?

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 as a virtual machine on my Mac. Since I am unable to get the virtual machine to have full access to my WiFi card, I bought another USB WiFi card to use. This is my WiFi card. If you are unfamiliar with Virtual machine, as far as I know, since the Ubuntu has its own card now, it shouldn't matter. However the connection times out on all of these machines. Questions: Could this be a driver issue if that same WiFi card can connect to other WiFi points and use its internet Could this be DHCP related? I would think not. It should at least get a 169.X.X.X address? No? Any solutions for me?

• WIFI looses connection with AR9285 - have to disconnect / connect to regain internet?

  I have a G73JW laptop using Ubuntu 12.04. It has an Atheros AR9285 card. While wifi seems to work fine most of the time, about every hour or two it will loose the connection to the internet. The connection will appear to be connected still to the wireless router, but internet access is gone. Disconnecting and reconnecting to the access point solves the problem, as does disabling and reenabling the adapter via the hardware keyboard shortcut. How might this be solved so the connection is stable and doesn't drop? • How do I install Intel ethernet drivers?

  I just bought a Lenovo T420, I booted the live CD and couldn't connect to my wireless router so I figured I needed the drivers for it. I have the last version of Ubuntu(12.04). It's a Intel® 82579 Gigabit Ethernet Controller So I went on intel's website and downloaded the Drivers for Linux and compiled them with make install. Here's the tutorial I followed: Linux Driver Install I have a few question though, What are these doing : modprobe e1000e ifconfig eth0 up dhclient eth0 ping intel.com As far as what I've read, modprobe seems to add the driver to the list of drivers for the kernel, but is that operation only good for one session? The two other lines, I don't understand either what they are doing. What does he mean at the end when he mentions : Note: Whenever the kernel version is upgraded you will need rebuild this driver. And are these steps permanent? Or do I have to add them to some boot.conf file for everytime I boot. Anyways, the steps worked for me and I have established a connection with my router, I just need to know if I need to do additional steps to keep the driver permanently etc.

• Having trouble installing Bradcom STA driver

  I just installed Ubuntu and love it so much, its so fast now. But I have a problem connecting to the internet. I checked and saw I have to install the driver Broadcom STA wireless driver but every time I do try to install it it says: Sorry, installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log files for details: /var/log/jockey.log I went to the terminal and copy and pasted the log file name. and when I did it, it said I have no permission to access this file. I checked on the forums that I have to be on a wired connection. So I plugged my laptop into my router and I got internet then tried to install the driver again. And it was loading then when it got to the end the same message popped up. Also I have one of those little USB router things you plug into the computer and it gives you internet I have been using that but its to slow. So I want to use the one in my computer but cant. Also I tried the command: sudo modprobe wl and when i type that command in it says: FATAL: Module wl not found Also I'm using Ubuntu 12.04

• b43 Firmware Error when trying to install Ubuuntu 14.04 on XP Laptop

  I know I'm an Ubuntu and Linux n00b, but I've been browsing the web for a few days searching for a solution, and none of the other b43 posts etc solve my problem. I am trying to install Ubuntu 14.04 on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro laptop(It's quite old yes, has about 30GB Hard Drive and I think 192mb of RAM) which currently has Windows XP installed(which I'd like to keep for the time being). I have downloaded the 32-bit Desktop ISO and used unetbootin to create a Live USB for this laptop. When I boot from USB, I arrive at the unetbootin Grey and Blue menu and pick either "Try Ubuntu without installing", or "Install Ubuntu". The menu goes away and an Ubuntu loadscreen showing UBUNTU and four dots which progressively change between white and orange. At about the second color changing cycle a white underscore symbol appears next to the fourth dot and flickers, and then I get the usual: [ 95.514833] b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode5.fw" not found [ 95.514847] b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43-open/ucode5.fw" not found [ 95.514855] b43-phy0 ERROR: You must go to http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#devicefirmware and download the correct firmware for this driver version. Please carefully read all the instruction on this website. After this I have to hard reboot or shut-down. I don't have a previous Linux install so cannot do the apt-get from my previous install. I cannot access the boot options menu by using F6 or similar. Any ideas? Thanks beforehand!

• Weird internet connection issue on Ubuntu 14.04

  I have an old Gateway PC with Windows 7 installed alongside the original (XP, I think?). A while ago my friend walked me through and helped me install Ubuntu 14.04 alongside the others because my Win7 was having issues with the display driver (it would unexpectedly crash while trying to watch videos on YouTube or other places). And I can't update it because the original computer settings are for XP or something, not Win7. :( We recently switched from AT&T U-Verse to Comcast. I would have stayed with Ethernet, but somehow the adapter I have wouldn't connect to Comcast's thing during their installation. So I was given a wireless USB adapter. It worked fine, up until the last few days. It's not a problem on Win7 (using it right now). Connection's strong, things load. On Ubuntu though, it SAYS it connects even before I login to my account, but when I login and bring up Firefox, it will load the homepage, and maybe one or two other pages I venture to before suddenly just... endlessly trying to load the page. I would normally go in and manually select 'disconnect' from the connections options menu to refresh/restart it like I've done a few times already. But lately, it won't respond, and then a little while later an error message comes up saying the request timed out/failed. Restarting my computer doesn't help it. The other weird thing is that I've noticed the signal (when it's actually working properly before the last few days) is comparitively weaker than when I'm on Win7. But my location doesn't change. It's the same computer, same connection.

• Windows 7 - Wireless Signal Good - Internet Often Says Limited or No Activity

  Hi - I have a New Dell Studio XPS latop that I hooked up in early January of 2010. The Dell Studio XPS laptop is connected to my wireless router (Belkin Wireless N). The router was purchased in Februaru of 2010 because I thought my router was bad (A D-Link router). Comcast is my ISP. Everyday, at random times, the internet will have a good signal (according to the little Win 7 icon on the taskbar) but I will receive a message saying limited or no internet access and I cannot access the internet. I have the internet setup to automatically get an IP and I did the IPCONFIG release / renew but with no success. I even had a WiFi enabled Blackberry right next to my computer and whenever the computer loses an WiFi connection, so does the Blackberry. The router isnt't bad, because the old router did the same thing - giving me limited or no internet access while working sometimes. I also tried using two other laptops in same physical position as my Dell Studio XPS laptop and they have the same problem. I am going crazy trying to figure this out as I have called the Router Company (Belkin), my ISP (Comcast), and my computer maker (Dell). Can anyone offer some suggestions and I can try them as we work through this and maybe one of the suggestion will be right one. Thanks in advance for even reading my problem. I searched for a problem similar to mine on the internet, but I have not been able to keep a steady internet connection. (Side note - I used to have an IBM thinkpad laptop and D - Link router and for years that wireless connection worked FLAWLESSLY, with the same physical set up - the laptop in my bedroom, and the router in the basement.)

As a result of that I get "Authentication required by wireless network". How can I solve this problem? I think it is important to notice that our system administrator tried to find some files (which are probably needed to be used as "CA Certificate"). He said that he does not know where this file is located on Ubuntu (he support only Windows). So, probably this is direction I need to go. I need to find this file. But may be I am wrong. May be something else needs to be done. Could you pleas help me with that?

• Internet Problem: Wireless connected but no connection to internet

  Hey i have a interesting network setup on a laptop here and for some reason the internet isnt working. I am connected to a secure network via wireless router and taskbar says i am connected and with good signal strength but in my internet browser i cant connect to any websites, the error is: This webpage is not available. (Chrome) I am using Chrome, but websites dont work on IE either. Heres a little background on the setup i have. I have a Ethernet connected to the laptop with a static ip, and then i have the wireless setup with DHCP enabled. I am using the ethernet to connect to the network (for remote desktop) but the wireless for internet (to avoid the network firewalls). this set up has worked fine for a few months, but i cant figure out what is going on now. Might be worth it to note it is a Lenovo Thinkpad and i just uninstalled ThinkVantage Access Connections (as it was giving me ample problems prior to this one, which i consider a step up) Tried repairing connection as well, let me know if you guys have any ideas please!   We have offices full of Windows & Mac users who obtain IP addresses from a Windows DHCP server, which in turn updates Dynamic DNS entries. We are noticing major inconsistencies with the entries, and have found that the problem is occurring more on Macs than on windows, and even more when users are frequently switching from wired to wireless adapter, which makes sense, as this sequence occurs: User enables wired adapter and registers Proper DNS User enables wireless adapter and registers 2nd proper DNS entry user switches off wireless manually and 2nd entry remains improperly until scavenge. Our help desk folks rely heavily (maybe more than they should) on the dynamic entries as part of their business process. For example, the user submits a help desk ticket, and the staff member expects to be able to remote desktop to their machine by hostname, which is hyperlinked in the helpdesk ticketing app. We have implemented multiple solutions & band-aids to different symptoms of the problems such as: Using DNS Reservations for Macintosh PCs Using DNS Scavenging to remove old records Switching from a Cisco DHCP server to the Windows DHCP Server But no matter what we do, it seems impossible to maintain perfect records. Has anyone encountered this problem before? What is industry best practice? Comments & Suggestions are much appreciated, /P

• Motorola Surfboard SB6121 modem conected to 2WIREi38HG wireless router but there's no internet access

  I have just switched to Comcast cable internet from AT&T Uverse and I was hoping to use the 2WIRE wireless router with the new Surfboard modem so I can have wireless access. I messed around with some settings and got it working for my laptop (I'm not terribly well versed in computer stuff; I think it was mostly luck) for about a week. The other day I tried to get online and there was no internet connection. I restarted the equipment with no success and then plugged the modem directly into the laptop. This worked, so I knew there was no outage. I connected the ethernet cord to the router and a second cord to my laptop and that worked, too. But when I tried again just with the wireless the laptop connects to the router, but doesn't recognize it or find an internet connection. I tried to go to http://gateway.2Wire.net to fiddle with the settings, but all I get is a Server Not Found page. I tried to check the ip address but this is really kind of over my head and I get different things checking it while plugged into only the modem vs when I plug into the router. Can anyone help? The frustrating thing is that I had it working for awhile, so I know it can do it!

• Ubuntu Server Wireless connection issue - replaced router but kept ESSID

  I have a ubuntu server 12.04 which was connected to my wireless network with no problem I replaced the wireless router but kept the ESSID and password the same. All other devices on network have connected correctly. However the Ubuntu Server will not route correctly. It will connect to the wifi router, and get a dhcp served IP address, however it will not route anything. I cannot ping the router from the server. the contents of /etc/resolve.conf are updated with the information from the router, (the host name has been served) I know there is nothing wrong with the router or the server, or the wireless card etc. I'm assuming there's some cached setting that associates the old router with the ESSID and causing the issue. I've got a lot of other devices connected to the router, so don't want to change the name of the ESSID. How do I fix this? • Many clients on a wireless AP for UDP broadcast packets

  I asked this question on StackOverflow and was directed over here, so I'd appreciate any advice. I'm deploying a smartphone application as part of a live music performance that depends on receiving UDP broadcast packets from a wireless access point. I'm guessing that between 20 and 50 clients will be connected at any one time. I'm aware that a maximum of 20 clients per access point is advised, but as the UDP broadcast packets are ground through the LAN, how would I be able to link multiple APs together? I'm looking for recommendations on a suitable AP for this. The actual data transmission rates are very low - only a few kB/s - as I'm just sending small messages to the smartphone apps, and there will be no WAN internet connection. I tried it with a few connected peers on an adhoc wireless connection without any problems, but ran into dropped packet issues on an old WRT54G running ddwrt, though it's in pretty rough shape. What's the best way to do this? I suppose I could limit concurrent wireless connections to 20 clients... but more would be nice. EDIT: I should also say that it's purely one-way communication; the smartphone application is only receiving broadcast packets, not sending anything.

• Windows-7 Ultimate 64 bit wont connect to my wired/wireless networks

  Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Everything was working fine & then just stopped working. The nic card Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller is enabled but does not connect to my router (cables & router ports are good). Wireless Atheros AR5007EG is enabled but the connection is limited (encryption type / key have been verified). A laptop running XP can connect both wired / wireless. SSID is not being broadcast, connect to network if it is not broadcasting is checked. Have checked services.msc for Bonjour & did not see it listed. Network & sharing center does not list any active networks. Device manager lists both devices as functioning properly. Router configuration has not been changed. Virus scan has not found anything. I would like to fix this rather than using Acronis to do a system restore. Thanks in advance for any advice offered in solving this. 26 Jan, the nic card & wireless are working using PCLinux OS Live CD. It appears that the problem is Windows 7 related.

When I go to "Add Wi-Fi network" in Wireless Settings I fill in the Network SSID and select 802.1x Enterprise for the security and fill everything out. The problem is that our university's wireless uses Thawte Premium Server CA certificate for certification. When I click the drop down list for CA certificate I get nothing in the list (just N/A) Now I have the certificate (Thawte Premium Server CA.pem) and have moved it to my SD card, but it doesn't look like Android automatically detects it. Where should I put the certificate so that the Android wireless manager recognizes it. In other words, how can I import a CA certificate so that Android recognizes that it is on the phone and displays it in the CA Certificate drop down list. Thanks for any help, Tomek P.S. My phone is not rooted EDIT: After doing some research it looks like you are able to install certificates by going to your phone's settings Location & Security Install from SD card Unfortunately it looks like the only accepted file extension is .p12. It does not look like there is a way to import .cer or .pem files (which are the only two files that come with the Thawte certificates) at this moment. It does look like you can use a converter to convert your .cer or .pem files to .p12, however a key file is needed. https://www.sslshopper.com/ssl-converter.html I do not know where to get this key file for the Thawte certificates.

• Can't view other computers on Network

  Systems: My Machine: Windows 7 Ultimate connected through ethernet into router Her Machine--Other Machine: Windows 7 Ultimate connected through wireless Router:F5D8236-4 N Wireless Router Version 1 Firmware: 2.01.03 (Apr 28 2009) ISP: Comcast Problem: I can not view the "Other Machine" on the network at all. I opened command prompt and ran net view and saw the pc name. I tried pinging the pc and it times out. Went inside the router and tried viewing the computer on the DHCP list and it can not be seen. I restored the router back to default settings and firmware and completely reset the modem and router, and created home group. I went to the other machine to configure home group settings and made sure that both PC's had identical settings. She was able to see my machine but I could not see hers. I restarted both machines and now we cant see each other at all. Also her PC ("Other Machine") had exclamation mark in the wireless icon but was connected just fine. There is no firewalls on currently or anti-virus enabled, and still can not see each other. Right now I am checking for updated drivers for the wireless card, but my question is could it be the router or something hardware related? I have went through all the settings in the Home group and visited most FAQ's and still no luck. Also as it stands I can not view her machine inside the router DHCP Client List :(

• Networking "chokes" on Windows 7 64 bit

  I've been having this problem for some months now, and I have been unable to figure out a solution, or even the cause. At random points throughout the day, my internet connectivity "freezes". I don't get disconnected from my local wireless network. My router doesn't get disconnected from the world. However, for some reason, my computer stops receiving packets. If I'm playing an MMO ( World of Warcraft, in this case, but it has happened with Eve Online as well ) all activity just freezes. If I try to browse, Opera, Firefox and IE all stall at "Waiting for google.com..." or whatever the hostname may be. Inspection with a packet sniffer seems to reveal that there are no incoming packets. Here's the interesting part. Disconnecting from my wireless network and reconnecting fixes the issue. Obviously this led me to conclude that it was a problem with my router or wireless card. However, I have tweaked all the settings on my router that I could think of, including things like QoS, AP Isolation, etc. with no change. My wireless card doesn't really have that many options, and I have uninstalled and reinstalled drivers a few times without any change. Windows Firewall on/off doesn't make a difference. Anyone have any suggestions for debugging this? It's becoming an annoyance.

• Why would Windows use slower network interface despite route metrics?

  On my previous notebook, the Dell/Broadcom wireless adapter had an option to automatically disable wireless when a wired network is connected, so I never dealt with multiple active interfaces. My current system has an Intel wireless adapter, and they apparently haven't figured out how to turn it off when there is a wired connection. Unless I explicitly remember to disable wireless when docked, the connection is active. That shouldn't be a problem (in theory), since the route metric will cause traffic to go over the fastest network (as indicated by the lowest metric in the routing table). Apparently not - I'm running a backup and seeing the throughput at 25Mbps or so (which is consistent with 802.11g) when a perfectly good Gigabit Ethernet interface is also connected.
