    I'm currently reading "Effective C++" and there is a chapter that contains code similiar to this: template <typename T> class Num { public: Num(int n) { ... } }; template <typename T> Num<T> operator*(const Num<T>& lhs, const Num<T>& rhs) { ... } Num<int> n = 5 * Num<int>(10); The book says that this won't work (and indeed it doesn't) because you can't expect the compiler to use implicit typecasting to specialize a template. As a soluting it is suggested to use the "friend" syntax to define the function inside the class. //It works template <typename T> class Num { public: Num(int n) { ... } friend Num operator*(const Num& lhs, const Num& rhs) { ... } }; Num<int> n = 5 * Num<int>(10); And the book suggests to use this friend-declaration thing whenever I need implicit conversion to a template class type. And it all seems to make sense. But why can't I get the same example working with a common function, not an operator? template <typename T> class Num { public: Num(int n) { ... } friend void doFoo(const Num& lhs) { ... } }; doFoo(5); This time the compiler complaints that he can't find any 'doFoo' at all. And if i declare the doFoo outside the class, i get the reasonable mismatched types error. Seems like the "friend ..." part is just being ignored. So is there a problem with my understanding? What is the difference between a function and an operator in this case?

I am running Mac OS X version 10.6.3 Gitnub version 0.9.1 I have copied the GitNub.app to my applications folder and created a new folder under /usr/local/ called "bin" to put the 'nub' executable inside of it.

  • jQuery bind efficiency

    I'm having issue with load speed using multiple jQuery binds on a couple thousands elements and inputs, is there a more efficient way of doing this? The site has the ability to switch between product lists via ajax calls, the page cannot refresh. Some lists have 10 items, some 100, some over 2000. The issue of speed arises when I start flipping between the lists; each time the 2000+ item list is loaded the system drags for about 10 seconds. Before I rebuild the list I am setting the target element's html to '', and unbinding the two bindings below. I'm sure it has something to do with all the parent, next, and child calls I am doing in the callbacks. But since they will be paying the application development, I don't want to distribute that application to the world inside the App Store in iTunes. How can I distribute this app to my customer? Should I get the Enterprise level subscription from the Apple Developer Program? Since I work as a freelancer, I think I can't subscribe to that program.

    I have a program which does a system call: latex somefile.latex This runs ok, when I type it directly in the command line, or when i invoke the program via CGI. But when it is using FastCGI, the system call returns: This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-1.40.10 (TeX Live 2009) ---! Must increase the hyph_size (Fatal format file error; I'm stymied) I already tried to increase the hyph_size but still no effect.

  • CellTable + AsyncListViewAdapter<T>, stuck at 'loading' when paging

    Hi I'm trying to make CellTable, AsyncListViewAdapter<T> and SimplePager<T> working together. I managed to display my data, but whenever I click either "go to start" or "go to end" button I get that 'loading' indicator which stays there till the end of days. ( AsyncListViewAdapter<T>.onRangeChanged doesn't even get called this time.) As I have only single row in my data those two buttons should be (and appear to be) disabled. I went through the code-snippets in this thread, but I can't see nothing suspicions in what I've been doing. Is there some obvious answer to a rookie mistake?   • Naming member functions/methods with a single underscore, good style or bad?

    In some languages where you cannot override the () operator, I have seen methods with a single underscore, usually for 'helper' classes. Something likes this: class D10 { public function _() { return rand(1,10); } } Is it better to have the function called Roll()? Is a underscore fine? After all, there is only one function, and it removes the need to look up the name of the class. Any thoughts?

    I use embedded servers that run inside Junit test cases. Sometimes these servers require a working directory (for example the Apache Directory server). The new @Rule in Junit 4.7 can handle these cases. The TemporaryFolder-Rule can create a temporary directory. A custom ExternalResource-Rule can be created for server. Thus the root-folder in TempraryFolder will be null, resulting that any files are created relative to the current working directory. If I reverse the order of the attributes in my class I get a compile error because I cannot reference a variable before it is defined. I'm using Junit 4.8.1 (because the ordering of rules was fixed a bit from the 4.7 release)

    I've been fighting with jQuery all night and getting quite frustrated here, so forgive me if the answer was staring me in the face. I have a grid of 15 images contained within a <div>, and when I click on one of them, I want it to expand to three times its original size of 150x105 and overlap the rest.
