• VMware Player 4.04 on Ubuntu 12.04 will not compile

  I installed VMware-Player-4.0.4-744019.i386.bundle onto Ubuntu 11.10. This worked fine. I then upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 The upgrade appeared to be successful. • GCC 4.2.1 Compiling on Cygwin(Win7 64bit) for iPhone [closed]

  Hey This is going to take a long while to explain, but the short version is that I am currently attempting to compile the LLVM GCC frontend for ARMv7 to compile apps for the Cortex-A8(iPhone 3GS). I'm running into an error from LD when compiling libgcc(part of the gcc compilation process) that has been driving me mad! The command is this: /usr/llvm-gcc-4.2-2.8.source/build/./gcc/xgcc \ -B/usr/llvm-gcc-4.2_2.8.source/build/./gcc \ -B/usr/local/arm-apple-darwin/bin \ -B/usr/local/arm-apple-darwin/lib \ -isystem /usr/local/arm-apple-darwin/include \ -isystem /usr/local/arm-apple-darwin/sys-include \ -O2 -g -W -Wall -Wwrite-strings -wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-prototypes -Wold-style-definition -fno-inline -dynamiclib -nodefaultlibs -W1,-dead_strip \ -marm \ -install_name /usr/local/arm-apple-darwin/lib/libgcc_s.1.dylib \ -single_module -o ./libgcc_s.1.dylib.tmp \ -W1,-exported_symbols_list,libgcc/./libgcc.map -compatibility_version 1 -current_version 1.0 -DIN_GCC -DCROSS_DIRECTORY_STRUCTURE -DHAVE_GTHR_DEFAULT -DIN_LIBGCC2 -D__GCC_FLOAT_NOT_NEEDED -Dinhibit_libc \ ... long list of .o files ... \ -lc And the result is typically a lot of undefined references to malloc, free, exit, etc. which typically indicate that libc is not getting compiled in. After going through the list of errors that ld is throwing, I see at the top that it is attempting to pull in /usr/lib/libc.a and complains that it is not the correct platform. Okay, that makes sense, so I spent 5 minutes on google and found an answer. Turns out that if I copy the libSystem.dylib and rename it to libc.dylib, that should solve the problem, but it doesn't. I couldn't find a copy of that file on my phone, so I pulled it directly from the SDK. I then get this strange error: ld64: in /usr/local/arm-apple-darwin/lib/libc.dylib, can't re-map file, errno=22 At this point, I did everything I could think of. I grabbed a fresh copy of my /usr/lib folder from my iphone and confirmed that libSystem.dylib(and libSystem.B.dylib) wasn't there. I unpacked the raw .ipsw package for iOS 4.2.1 and once again, I could not find a copy of libSystem.dylib there either. I unpacked the iPhoneSDK and MacOS SDK and I managed to find a copy of it in both, but that error just kept persisting. I copied libSystem.dylib, libSystem.B.dylib, tried all sorts of combinations of renaming to libc.dylib and still nothing but errors. I can't find a way to get it to recognize the file and link against it. I also tried linking against the libc.a located in the iphone SDK and that didn't work either. I checked what ./xgcc was firing off, and it was my freshly built copy of arm-apple-darwin-ld64 which should be fine. A little bit of background here. I built LLVM+Clang 2.8 with no errors, and I rebuilt the ODCCTools with some light modifications to get it to compile on Cygwin(I'll post my changes in a patch along with a tutorial if I can get this to work). I also grabbed the iphone-dev "includes" and "csu" project and those completed successfully, although there really is no point to them since I can't get it to link against crt0.a. I'm running out of ideas here. Can anyone help me out on this?

  Yes, I'm an alliterating all-star; I missed my calling as a newspaper headline writer. I have recently received questions from several folks on support for QR codes. You know them they are everywhere you look, even here! How does Publisher handle QR codes then? In theory, exactly the same way we handle any other 2D barcode font. We need the font file, a mapping entry and an encoding class. With those three pieces we can embed QR codes into any output. To test the theory, I went off to IDAutomation, I have worked with them and many customers over the years and their fonts and encoders have worked great and have been very reliable. They kindly provide demo fonts which has made my life so much easier to be able to write posts like this. Their QR font and encoder is a little tough to find. I started here and then hit the Demo Now button. On the next page I hit the right hand Demo Now button. In the resulting zip file you'll need two files: AdditionalFonts.zip >> Automation2DFonts >> TrueType >> IDAutomation2D.ttf Java Class Encoder >> IDAutomation_JavaFontEncoder_QRCode.jar - the QRBarcodeExample.java is useful to see how to call the encoder. The font file needs to be installed into the windows/fonts directory, just copy and paste it in using file explorer and windows will install it for you. Remember, we are using the demo font here and you'll see if you get your phones decoder to looks a the font above there is a fixed string 'DEMO' at the beginning. You want that removed? Go buy the font from the IDAutomation folks. The Encoder Next you need to create your encoding wrapper class. Publisher does ship a class but its compiled and I do not recommend trying to modify it, you can just build your own. I have loaded up my class here. You do not need to be a java guru, its pretty straightforward. I'd recommend a java IDE like JDeveloper from a convenience point of view. I have annotated my class and added a main method to it so you can test your encoders from JDeveloper without having to deploy them first. You can load up the project form the zip file straight into JDeveloper.Next, take a look at IDAutomation's example java class and you'll see: QRCodeEncoder qre=new QRCodeEncoder();  String DataToEncode = "IDAutmation Inc.";  boolean ApplyTilde = false;  int EncodingMode = 0;  int Version = 0;  int ErrorCorrectionLevel = 0;  System.out.println( qre.FontEncode(DataToEncode, ApplyTilde, EncodingMode, Version, ErrorCorrectionLevel) ); You'll need to check what settings you need to set for the ApplyTilde, EncodingMode, Version and ErrorCorrectionLevel. They are covered in the user guide from IDAutomation here. If you do not want to hard code the values in the encoder then you can quite easily externalize them and read the values from a text file. I have not covered that scenario here, I'm going with IDAutomation's defaults and my phone app is reading the fonts no problem. Now you know how to call the encoder, you need to incorporate it into your encoder wrapper class. The DataToEncode string is passed in rather than hardcoded of course. With the class done you can now compile it, but you need to ensure that the IDAutomation_JavaFontEncoder_QRCode.jar is in the classpath. In JDeveloper, open the project properties >> Libraries and Classpaths and then add the jar to the list. You'll need the publisher jars too. You can find those in the jlib directory in your Template Builder for Word directory.Note! In my class, I have used package oracle.psbi.barcode; As my package spec, yours will be different but you need to note it for later. Once you have it compiling without errors you will need to generate a jar file to keep it in. In JDeveloper highlight your project node >> New >> Deployment Profile >> JAR file. Once you have created the descriptor, just take the defaults. It will tell you where the jar is located. Go get it and then its time to copy it and the IDAutomation jar into the Template Builder for Word directory structure. Deploying the jars On your windows machine locate the jlib directory under the Template Builder for Word install directory. On my machine its here, F:\Program Files\Oracle\BI Publisher\BI Publisher Desktop\Template Builder for Word\jlib. Copy both of the jar files into the directory. The next step is to get the jars into the classpath for the Word plugin so that Publisher can find your wrapper class and it can then find the IDAutomation encoder. The most consistent way I have found so far, is to open up the RTF2PDF.jar in the same directory and make some mods. First make a backup of the jar file then open it using winzip or 7zip or similar and get into the META-INF directory. In there is a file, MANIFEST.MF. This contains the classpath for the plugin, open it in an editor and add the jars to the end of the classpath list. In mine I have: Manifest-Version: 1.0 Class-Path: ./activation.jar ./mail.jar ./xdochartstyles.jar ./bicmn.jar ./jewt4.jar ./share.jar ./bipres.jar ./xdoparser.jar ./xdocore.jar ./xmlparserv2.jar ./xmlparserv2-904.jar  ./i18nAPI_v3.jar ./versioninfo.jar ./barcodejar.jar ./IDAutomation_JavaFontEncoder_QRCode.jar Main-Class: RTF2PDF I have put in carriage returns above to make the Class-Path: entry more readable, make sure yours is all on one line. Be sure to use the ./ as a prefix to the jar name. Ensure the file is saved inside the jar file 7zip and winzip both have popups asking if you want to update the file in the jar file.Now you have the jars on the classpath, the Publisher plugin will be able to find our classes at run time. Referencing the Font The next step is to reference the font location so that the rendering engine can find it and embed a subset into the PDF output. Remember the other output formats rely on the font being present on the machine that is opening the document. The PDF is the only truly portable format. Inside the config directory under the Template Builder for Word install directory, mine is here, F:\Program Files\Oracle\BI Publisher\BI Publisher Desktop\Template Builder for Word\config. You'll find the file, 'xdo example.cfg'. Rename it to xdo.cfg and open it in a text editor. In the fonts section, create a new entry:       <font family="IDAutomation2D" style="normal" weight="normal">              <truetype path="C:\windows\fonts\IDAutomation2D.ttf" />       </font> Note, 'IDAutomation2D' (in red) is the same name as you can see when you open MSWord and look for the QRCode font. This must match exactly. When Publisher looks at the fonts in the RTF template at runtime it will see 'IDAutomation2D' it will then look at its font mapping entries to find where that font file resides on the disk. If the names do not match or the font is not present then the font will not get used and it will fall back on Helvetica. Building the Template Now you have the data encoder and the font in place and mapped; you can use it in the template. The two commands you will need to have present are: <?register-barcode-vendor:'ENCODER WRAPPER CLASS'; 'ENCODER NAME'?> for my encoder I have: <?register-barcode-vendor:'oracle.psbi.barcode.BarcodeUtil'; 'MyBarcodeEncoder'?> Notice the two parameters for the command. The first provides the package 'path' and class name (remember I said you need to remember that above.)The second is the name of the encoder, in my case 'MyBarcodeEncoder'. Check my full encoder class in the zip linked below to see where I named it. You can change it to something else, no problem.This command needs to be near the top of the template. The second command is the encoding command: <?format-barcode:DATAT_TO_ENCODE;'ENCODER_METHOD_NAME';'ENCODER_NAME'?> for my command I have <?format-barcode:DATATEXT;'qrcode';'MyBarcodeEncoder'?>DATATEXT is the XML element that contains the text to be encoded. If you want to hard code a piece of text just surround it with single quotes. qrcode is the name of my encoder method that calls the IDAutomation encoder. Remember this.MyBarcodeEncoder is the name of my encoder. Repetition? Yes but its needed again. Both of these commands are put inside their own form fields. Do not apply the QRCode font to the second field just yet. Lets make sure the encoder is working. If you do not get the encoded text then go back and check that your jars are in the right spot and that you have the MANIFEST.MF file updated correctly. Once you do get the encoded text, highlight the field and apply the IDAutomation2D font to it. Then re-run the report and you will hopefully see the QR code in your output. If not, go back and check the xdo.cfg entry and make sure its in the right place and the font location is correct. That's it, you now have QR codes in Publisher outputs. Everything I have written above, has been tested with the 5.6.3, 10.1.3.4.2 codelines. I'll be testing the 11g code in the next day or two and will update you with any changes. One thing I have not covered yet and will do in the next few days is how to deploy all of this to your server. Look out for a follow up post. One note on the apparent white lines in the font (see the image above). Once printed they disappear and even viewing the code on a screen with the white lines, my phone app is still able to read and interpret the contents no problem. I have zipped up my encoder wrapper class as a JDeveloper 11.1.1.6 project here. Just dig into the src directories to find the BarcodeUtil.java file if you just want the code. UPDATE : Hrmm, I thought likewise didn't use native winbind but its own modules. Installing winbind from apt-get uninstalls pbis-open (likewise) and generates failures when installing if pbis-open is installed first. Uninstalled winbind, reinstalled pbis-open, same issue as above. The file pam_winbind.so does not exist in that location. Setting up pbis-open-legacy (7.0.1.918) ... Installing Packages was successful This computer is joined to DOMAIN.LOCAL New libraries and configurations have been installed for PAM and NSS. Clearly it thinks it has installed it, but it hasn't. It may be a legacy issue with the previous attempt to configure domain integration manually with winbind. Does anyone have a working likewise-open installation and does the /etc/nsswitch.conf include references to winbind? Or do the /etc/pam.d/common-account or /etc/pam.d/common-password reference pam_winbind.so? I'm unsure if those entries are just legacy or setup by likewise. UPDATE 2 : Complete reinstall of OS fixed it and it worked seamlessly, like it was meant to and those 2 PAM files did NOT include entries for pam_winbind.so, so that was the underlying problem. • Tip on Reusing Classes in Different .NET Project Types

  All of us have class libraries that we developed for use in our projects. When you create a .NET Class Library project with many classes, you can use that DLL in ASP.NET, Windows Forms and WPF applications. However, for Silverlight and Windows Phone, these .NET Class Libraries cannot be used. The reason is Silverlight and Windows Phone both use a scaled down version of .NET and thus do not have access to the full .NET framework class library. However, there are many classes and functionality that will work in the full .NET and in the scaled down versions that Silverlight and Windows Phone use.Let’s take an example of a class that you might want to use in all of the above mentioned projects. The code listing shown below might be something that you have in a Windows Form or an ASP.NET application. public class StringCommon{  public static bool IsAllLowerCase(string value)  {    return new Regex(@"^([^A-Z])+$").IsMatch(value);  }   public static bool IsAllUpperCase(string value)  {    return new Regex(@"^([^a-z])+$").IsMatch(value);  }} The StringCommon class is very simple with just two methods, but you know that the System.Text.RegularExpressions namespace is available in Silverlight and Windows Phone. Thus, you know that you may reuse this class in your Silverlight and Windows Phone projects. Here is the problem: if you create a Silverlight Class Library project and you right-click on that project in Solution Explorer and choose Add | Add Existing Item… from the menu, the class file StringCommon.cs will be copied from the original location and placed into the Silverlight Class Library project. You now have two files with the same code. If you want to change the code you will now need to change it in two places! This is a maintenance nightmare that you have just created. If you then add this to a Windows Phone Class Library project, you now have three places you need to modify the code! Add As LinkInstead of creating three separate copies of the same class file, you want to leave the original class file in its original location and just create a link to that file from the Silverlight and Windows Phone class libraries. Visual Studio will allow you to do this, but you need to do one additional step in the Add Existing Item dialog (see Figure 1). You will still right mouse click on the project and choose Add | Add Existing Item… from the menu. You will still highlight the file you want to add to your project, but DO NOT click on the Add button. Instead click on the drop down portion of the Add button and choose the “Add As Link” menu item. This will now create a link to the file on disk and will not copy the file into your new project. Figure 1: Add as Link will create a link, not copy the file over. When this linked file is added to your project, there will be a different icon next to that file in the Solution Explorer window. This icon signifies that this is a link to a file in another folder on your hard drive.   Figure 2: The Linked file will have a different icon to show it is a link. Of course, if you have code that will not work in Silverlight or Windows Phone -- because the code has dependencies on features of .NET that are not supported on those platforms – you  can always wrap conditional compilation code around the offending code so it will be removed when compiled in those class libraries. • Ubuntu + Wacom Intuos 4 + MyPaint HELP!

  Please keep in mind I'm not that computer savvy, but I will try any suggestion so please help me out! My tablet will stop working if the USB connection is ever broken, or the Ubuntu software is being updated. Sometimes it will stop working for no reason that I can see. The lights will still be on, but it won't be responsive. It doesn't work again until I restart the laptop with the tablet plugged in, which is grating if you have to do it every 25 min. or so... I'm not sure if the issue is with the port, the tablet/cable or the driver but any suggestions would be very welcome! Also, MyPaint is frequently having hiccups. It seems to save fine but at times it will randomly close down and when I open files they're often empty. They turn into 0Kb files and only contain a single empty layer. Also very grating, considering I lose days of work for no clear reason and without any heads up. Again, I'm not sure if the issue is with the port, the tablet/cable or the driver but any suggestions would be very welcome! • Development Quirk From ASP.NET Dynamic Compilation

  The Problem I got a compilation error in my ASP.NET MVC3 project that tested my sanity today. (As always, names are changed to protect the innocent) The type or namespace name 'FishViewModel' does not exist in the namespace 'Company.Product.Application.Models' (are you missing an assembly reference?) Sure looks easy! There must be something in the project referring to a FishViewModel. The Confusing Part The first thing I noticed was the that error was occuring in a folder clearly not in my project and in files that I definitely had not created: %SystemRoot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\(versionNumber)\Temporary ASP.NET Files\ App_Web_mezpfjae.1.cs I also ascertained these facts, each of which made me more confused than the last: Rebuild and Clean had no effect. No controllers in the project ever returned a ViewResult using FishViewModel. No views in the project defined that they use FishViewModel. Searching across all files included in the project for “FishViewModel” provided no results. The build server did not report a problem. The Solution The problem stemmed from a file that was not included in the project but still present on the file system: (By the way, if you don’t know this trick already, there is a toolbar button in the Solution Explorer window to “Show All Files” which allows you to see files all files in the file system) In my situation, I was working on the mission-critical Fish view before abandoning the feature. Instead of deleting the file, I excluded it from the project. However, this was a bad move. It caused the build failure, and in order to fix the error, this file must be deleted. By the way, this file was not in source control, so the build server did not have it. This explains why my build server did not report a problem for me. The Explanation So, what’s going on? This file isn’t even a part of the project, so why is it failing the build? This is a behavior of the ASP.NET Dynamic Compilation. This is the same process that occurs when deploying a webpage; ASP.NET compiles the web application’s code. When this occurs on a production server, it has to do so without the .csproj file (which isn’t usually deployed, if you’ve taken your time to do a deployment cleanly). This process has merely the file system available to identify what to compile. So, back in the world of developing the webpage in visual studio on my developer box, I run into the situation because the same process is occuring there. This is true even though I have more files on my machine than will actually get deployed. I can’t help but think that this error could be attributed back to the real culprit file (Fish.cshtml, rather than the temporary files) with some work, but at least the error had enough information in it to narrow it down. The Conclusion I had previously been accustomed to the idea that for c# projects, the .csproj file always “defines” the build behavior. • Converting .docx to pdf (or .doc to pdf, or .doc to odt, etc.) with libreoffice on a webserver on the fly using php

  Ok, so I needed to convert .docx files to .pdf files on the fly, but none of the free php libraries that were available let me do it on my server (a webservice was not good enough). Basically either I needed to pay for a library (and have it maybe suck) or just deal with the free ones that didn't convert the formatting well enough. Not good enough! I found that LibreOffice (OpenOffice's successor) allows command line conversion using the LibreOffice conversion engine (which DID preserve the formatting like I wanted and generally worked great). I loaded the latest version of Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download) onto my Virtual Box (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads) on my computer and found that I was able to easily convert files using the commandline like this: libreoffice --headless -convert-to pdf fileToConvert.docx -outdir output/path/for/pdf I thought: sweet...but I don't have admin rights on my host's web server. I tried to use a "portable" version of LibreOffice that I obtained from http://portablelinuxapps.org/ but I was unable to get it to work on my host's webserver, because my host's webserver didn't have all the dependencies (Dependency Hell! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dependency_hell) I was at a loss of how to make it work, until I ran across a cool project made by a Ph.D. student (Philip J. Guo) at Stanford called CDE: http://www.stanford.edu/~pgbovine/cde.html I will let you look at his explanations of how it works (I followed what he did in http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=6XdwHo1BWwY, starting at about 32:00 as well as the directions on his site), but in short, it allows one to avoid dependency hell by copying all the files used when you run certain commands, recreating the linux environment where the command worked. I was able to use this to run LibreOffice without having to resort to someone's portable version of it, and it worked just like it did when I did it on Ubuntu with the command above, with a tweak: I needed to run the wrapper of LibreOffice the CDE generated. So, below is my PHP code that calls it. In this code snippet, the filename to be copied is passed in as $_POST["filename"]. I copy the file to the same spot where I originally converted the file, convert it, copy it back and then delete all the files (so that it doesn't start growing exponentially). I did it this way because I wasn't able to make it work otherwise on the webserver. If there is a linux + webserver ninja out there that can figure out how to make it work without doing this, I would be interested to know what you did. Unpack the tar.gz and run the php script above from the "documents" folder. Success! I made a truly portable version of LibreOffice that can convert files on the fly on a webserver using 100% free, open source software!

  I have created a jar file in this way jar cf jar-file input-files. Now I try to run it. This does not work: jre -cp app.jar MainClass (jre command is not found).   I'm unable to debug a WinForms C# application using the released version of Visual Studio 2010 Prof. I get the following error message after the second debugging run. Error 9 Unable to copy file "obj\x86\Debug\Arrowgrass Reports.exe" to "bin\Debug\Arrowgrass Reports.exe". The process cannot access the file 'bin\Debug\Arrowgrass Reports.exe' because it is being used by another process. I've tried a pre-build script to attempt to delete this file, but it's locked by Visual Studio. There are a few references to this on the net so it is a know problem. Does anyone have a hotfix or effective work-around?

  I need to take an array of three lines in a text file and sort them base on the first line in Java. I also need to manipulate this as well and then print to screen. I have a test file that is formatted like this: 10 Michael Jackson 12 Richard Woolsey I need to input this from a text file and then rearrange it based on the number associated with the name. At that point, I need to use a random number generator and assign a variable based on the random number to each name. Then I need to print to screen the variable I added and the name in a different format. Here is an example of the output: 12: Woolsey, Richard Variable assigned 10: Jackson, Michael Other variable assigned I highly appreciate any help. I ask because I do not really know how to input the three lines as one variable and then manipulate later on in the program. Thanks, Cory

• Why won't Windows Installer use the UI in the .msi file during removal?

  Has anyone been able to get Windows Installer to use the InstallUISequence table during removal? I started with an MSI file produced by the Visual Studio msi builder, decompiled it into WiX source code and handcrafted it, but I cannot get the installer to use my UI during removal. It insists on using a default UI provided by Windows Installer. I have also analyzed several MSI files, and I have been unable to find one where Windows Installer will use the provided UI during removal. I captured the msiexec logs during removal, and sure enough, Windows Installer appears to be ignoring the InstallUISequence table. It seems that msiexec runs with minimal UI during removal. If I specify the /qf switch (use full UI) during removal, then Windows Installer does take the UI from the .msi file. However, this doesn't help the regular user, because she won't do the removal from msiexec. Does anyone know of a way to convince Windows Installer to use the UI in the MSI file by default?

  Hi friends, I have got little tricky issue i.e I am using API of a product which has few methods for uploading image. The UI part of the product has one file upload control which takes files and convert that into binary and save it to database. In the coding part they are using one method where they send this fileupload.postedfile as one of the input parameter to the method. Now my requirement is, I have a directory where there are hundred of files which i have to send each file one by after another to this method as a input. Now i wish to know how to pass a file name as "HttpPostedFile" to that method as a parameter. I have no other option other than using that API (our clients requirement). Thanks

  Hello, I have this code that saves a pdf file. FileStream fs = new FileStream(SaveLocation, FileMode.Create); fs.Write(result.DocumentBytes, 0, result.DocumentBytes.Length); fs.Flush(); fs.Close(); It works fine. However sometimes it does not release the lock right away and that causes file locking exceptions with functions run after this one run. Is there a ideal way to release the file lock right after the fs.Close() thanks!

• Can't find my.cnf file so I can enable InnoDB - is there another way?

  Hey all, I am trying to Magento running on a share server, and am having difficulty. When I look at the engines in PHPmyAdmin, I get InnoDB DISABLED. So I look in /etc/, and there is no my.cnf file. There is a ftpquota and a .boxtrapper file, but nothing else. I know I can probably create a new one, but this is a server that hosts a lot of sites. I'm afraid I will mess someone up. So is there a way to maybe create a my.cnf file that only enable InnoDB and doesn't effect anything else? Or is there another way to enable it?

  I have a file called config.yml in my /config folder of my rails application. I also have an initializer: config/initializers/load_config.rb with the following code: APP_CONFIG = YAML.load_file("#{RAILS_ROOT}/config/config.yml") I am using the Whenever gem to set up a cron job, and would like to use my APP_CONFIG to call a function like so: #inside schedule.rb every 2.hours do runner "MyModel.someMethod('#{APP_CONFIG['some_value']}')" end but the Whenever gem doesn't seem to recognize the config file when I call whenever --update-crontab mysite How can I incorporate values from my configuration in my schedule.rb file (instead of hard-coding the value)?   Hi, I'd like for log events of type WARN or higher to show the class name. All others would not show the class name. this is both to simplify the log and to not have the performance hit on lower events such as TRACE. This must all go to the same log file.
