  • How can I go about learning to write a shader

    - by Donutz
    So here's the background: I'm writing a game, just for my own amusement and education really. I've already come to the conclusion that XNA was the way to go for graphics, I've bought a couple of books, I've gotten basic game graphics going, and that's great. Now I'm starting to get a little in-depth and I'm starting to need to do stuff not covered in my (beginner) books. In particular, I need to display a sprite using a mask. Actually, what I need to do is display a generic sprite with a different color for each player. After banging around on the web, it seems the way to go is to have a color texture (one for each player) which I display using the mask, then display the generic part of the sprite. This has to be done dynamically, i.e. at runtime because there are too many sprites to keep in memory if I try to generate all the permutations at startup. So, I need to use a shader. Fine. I've downloaded a sample shader program, and managed to hit it with a hammer until it does something close enough to what I want so that I know I'm on the right track. And here, we come to my problem... I have no friggin' clue what I'm doing. While there are a lot of samples and such about shaders, no one ever actually explains what's going on. For instance, I can't find any real docs on Tex2D. I feel like the guys in Zoolander poking at the computer. So, my question (yes, I have a question) -- where is a good URL or what is a good book to take me from dumskie to reasonably competent to write a basic shader?

  • Keyboard is not detecting as3

    - by Kaoru
    i got this problem, when i press 1 in keyboard, the function does not run, even i already declared it. How do i solve this? Here is the code: public function Character() { Constant.loaderMario.load(new URLRequest("mario.swf")); addEventListener(KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN, selectingPlayer); } private function selectingPlayer(event:KeyboardEvent):void { isoTextMario = new Word(); isoTextChocobo = new Word(); if (event.keyCode == Keyboard.NUMBER_1|| event.keyCode == 49) { Constant.marioSelected = true; if (Constant.marioSelected == true) { isoTextMario.marioCharacter(); addChild(isoTextMario); } } else if (event.keyCode == Keyboard.NUMBER_2 || event.keyCode == 50) { Constant.chocoboSelected = true; if (Constant.chocoboSelected == true) { isoTextChocobo.chocoboCharacter(); addChild(isoTextChocobo); } } }

  • Artificial Intelligence ... how to make an object roam freely/avoid other objects, and model consciousness? [on hold]

    - by help bonafide pigeons
    Say a simple free roam battle scene in which a player runs around freely and engages in battle with other enemies/objects, as shown below: The dragon/dinosaur (or whatever that thing I drew appears to be) will, by some measure, try and avoid attacks so it is modeled to appear to have a conscious desire to avoid pain. My question is ... since this is very complex, many possible strategies for solving this, algorithms, etc., what is the basic idea behind how this would be accomplished in any sort? Like, we can assume the enemy in the picture is not just going to aimlessly hop around and avoid, but freely be modeled to behave as if it were really exploring/fighting. For the best example I can give, witness the behavior of the enemies in Final Fantasy 12 in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mO0TkmhiQ6w How do the pros, or how would anyone attempt solve/implement this? PS: I have tried several times to give an image the "illusion" that is has a conciousness, but aside from emulating a real animal's consciousness in complete, I fall short and get choppy moving images that follow predictable patterns, error-prone movements, and the worst imaginable scenario of a battle engagement.

  • How to populate a form list with buttons using javascript

    - by StealingMana
    I made a script that, when you press one button(accessories) the selection(mylist) populates with one array(accessoryData), and when you hit the other button(weapons) the other array(weaponData) populates the selection. However, in the current state of the code the second button press is not re-populating the selection. What is wrong here? Also if there is a more efficient way to do this, that might be helpful. Full code function runList(form, test) { var html = ""; var x; dataType(test); while (x < dataType.length) { html += "<option>" + dataType[x]; x++; } document.getElementById("mylist").innerHTML = html; }

  • How do I create an efficient long, pannable, sprite-animated scene in a Windows Store game?

    - by Groo
    I am creating my first Windows Store application in XAML, and I cannot seem to find a proper example for the requirements I have. The basic idea of the app is to have a large scrollable canvas which would lazily start animating visible parts of the view as soon as user stops panning over a certain content (with some audio played also): My original idea was to use a StackPanel to add a bunch of custom controls, each of which would then animate itself once visible (with a short delay), but I have a couple of concerns: If the entire canvas is ~50 screen widths wide, is it feasible to load all content at the beginning, or do I need to plan doing some lazy loading during scrolling? For example, when I select a certain region in the Bing Travel app, it seems to lazily load tiles as I scroll it towards the end. Since content is stretched 100% vertically, and these animations are vectorized to be resolution independent, I am not sure if XAML (CompositionTarget) will be able to handle this, or I have to go for DirectX (MonoGame or C++) to get rid of flicker. Even better, is there an example for Windows 8 which uses a 100% vertically sized GridView with custom animated controls inside?

  • Drawing "Stenciled" Sprites and making them glow

    - by Code Assassin
    Currently, in my game - I'm not using XNA's SpriteBatch to render anything(I am using Farseer Physic's Debug View), and I was wondering how I would render something like this: only using XNA. My second question is once I have drawn these stenciled sprites , how would I give the "stenciled" lines a glow effect like so: I haven't done anything like this before so It is a very confusing experience for me. Any pointers?

  • Which game library/engine to choose?

    - by AllTheThingsSheSaid
    I'm not a programming beginner at all. I've tried 2 libraries/engines so far, allegro and Unity. For allegro. i think its not good if i wanna make a career in gaming industry since its not powerful enough. I don't feel comfortable with unity. Its more like a software like photoshop or flash. You can do almost everything with pre-defined functions, tools and with less coding. I need something which offers less tools and pre defined functions and more coding work. It would be awesome if its free and c/c++ based. I need both 2D/3D. and please, don't tell me to make my own library, i am not "that" advance. Any other information about gaming industry would be greatly appreciated.

  • Cocos2d iOS A* Star Path finding help

    - by user32581
    Hello I need help implementing this class https://github.com/sqlboy/tiled-games/tree/master/src into my iOS game. Im using the suggested code of: AStarPathFinder pathFinder = [[AStarPathFinder alloc] initWithTileMap:tileMap collideLayer:@"collide"]; // Optionally, you can set the name of the collide property key and the value it expects. [pathFinder setCollideKey:@"collidable"] // defaults to COLLIDE [pathFinder setCollideValue:@"True"] // defaults to 1 // highlight a path (src and dst are tile coorindates) [pathFinder highlightPathFrom:srcTile to:dstTile]; // move a sprite [pathFinder moveSprite:player from:srcTile to:dstTile atSpeed:0.1f]; I get the following error: Instance method '-initWithTileMap:collideLayer:' not found (return defaults to 'id') This is the official post for the class: http://www.cocos2d-iphone.org/forums/topic/just-pushed-a-cctmxtiledmap-a-pathfinding-class-to-github/ The only other code I added was: #import "AStarPathFinder.h" I think I am perhaps missing something! I am grateful for any help!

  • Enemy collision detection with movie clips

    - by user18080
    I have created multiple movieclips with animations within them. It is an obstacle avoidance game and I cannot seem to be able to get my enemies to contact my playableCharacter. The enemies I have created are each embedded on certain levels of my game. I have created an array, enemiesArray to have each of my enemies placed within it. Here is the code for that: //step 1: make sure array exists if(enemiesArray!=null && enemiesArray.length!=0) { //step 2: check all enemies against villain for(var i:int = 0;i < enemiesArray.length; i++) { //step 3: check for collision if(villain.hitTestObject(enemiesArray[i])) { //step 4: do stuff trace("HIT!"); removeChild(enemiesArray[i]); enemiesArray.splice(i,1); removeChild(villain); villain = null; } } } What I am unsure of is whether or not my enemiesArray is actually holding the movieclips I have suggested. If it was, this code would be tracing back a "HIT" for every time I ran into an enemy and would kill my character. It is not doing that however. I am thinking I have to push my movieclips into my array but I don't know how to do that or where for that matter. Any and all help would be much appreciated.

  • Open file with java application [migrated]

    - by Giaphage47
    I am using Ubuntu. I would like to have a user be able to double-click (or whatever they have set to open a file) on the save file for a java game i'm making, and have the game start and automatically load the save. How could I make the game launch instead of opening the file, and then pass the save's file name or location as an argument? Would i have to have the game create a new mime type the first time it ran, or something similar, so that Ubuntu knows what to do with the save when the user tries to open it?

  • How do I make camera move at same speed when rotating and moving forward

    - by dez
    I made a camera in DX9. To move forward I press the Up arrow. To rotate on the Y axis I use the mouse. When I perform these movements on their own the camera moves at the speed I want. However, if I hold down Up and move the mouse at the same time then the camera moves a lot faster than it should. I want it to move at the same speed as it does when only the Up arrow is pressed. I think I need to normalize something somewhere but not sure what and not sure where. Have tried various combinations without success so if anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great. Thanks. I've post code below. #define KEY_DOWN(vk_code) ((GetAsyncKeyState(vk_code) & 0x8000) ? 1 : 0) LRESULT WINAPI MsgProc( HWND hWnd, UINT msg, WPARAM wParam, LPARAM lParam ) { if( KEY_DOWN(VK_UP)) MovePlayer(D3DXVECTOR3(0, 0, -1.0f)); if( KEY_DOWN(VK_DOWN)) MovePlayer(D3DXVECTOR3(0, 0, 1.0f)); switch( msg ) { case WM_MOUSEMOVE: ProcessMouseInput(); } } void MovePlayer( D3DXVECTOR3 in_vec ) { D3DXMATRIX CameraRot; D3DXMatrixRotationY(&CameraRot,D3DXToRadian(AngleY)); D3DXVECTOR3 CameraRotTarget; D3DXVec3TransformNormal(&CameraRotTarget,&in_vec,&CameraRot); CameraPos += (m_timeElapsed * CameraRotTarget); } void ProcessMouseInput() { GetCursorPos( &CurrentMouseState ); if ((CurrentMouseState.x != GameMouseState.x) || (CurrentMouseState.y != GameMouseState.y)) { int dx = CurrentMouseState.x - GameMouseState.x; int dy = CurrentMouseState.y - GameMouseState.y; AngleY+=m_timeElapsed*dx*7.0f; } GameMouseState = CurrentMouseState; // Set back to window center in Render function } VOID UpdateCamera() { D3DXVECTOR3 CameraOrigTarget(0, 0, -1); D3DXVECTOR3 CameraOrigUp(0, 1, 0); D3DXMATRIX CameraRot; D3DXMATRIX CameraRotX; D3DXMatrixRotationX(&CameraRotX,D3DXToRadian(AngleX)); D3DXMATRIX CameraRotY; D3DXMatrixRotationY(&CameraRotY,D3DXToRadian(AngleY)); CameraRot = CameraRotX * CameraRotY; D3DXVECTOR3 CameraRotTarget; D3DXVec3TransformNormal(&CameraRotTarget,&CameraOrigTarget,&CameraRot); D3DXVECTOR3 CameraTarget; CameraTarget = CameraPos + CameraRotTarget; D3DXVECTOR3 vUpVec( 0.0f, 1.0f, 0.0f ); D3DXMatrixLookAtLH( &matView, &CameraPos, &CameraTarget, &vUpVec ); g_pd3dDevice->SetTransform( D3DTS_VIEW, &matView ); D3DXMatrixPerspectiveFovLH( &matProj, D3DX_PI / 4, 1.0f, 1.0f, 100.0f ); g_pd3dDevice->SetTransform( D3DTS_PROJECTION, &matProj ); }

  • Scalability of multi-threading in game server

    - by Taylor Hill
    What is a reasonable number of threads for a simple 2D mmo in Java? Is it reasonable to have two threads per connection, one for the input stream and one for the output stream? The reason I ask is because I use a blocking method on the input stream, and a workaround seems unnecessarily complex if I were to try to get around it without adding threads. This is mostly for my own edification; I don't expect to have 5 million people playing it ever, or even 5, but I'm wondering what a good scalable solution is, and if this is reasonable for a small server (<30 connections).

  • Creating a interactive grid for puzzle game

    - by Noupoi
    I am trying to make a slitherlink game, and am not too sure how to approach creating the game, more specifically the grid structure on which the puzzle will be played on. This is what a empty and completed slitherlink grid would look like. The numbers in the squares are sort of clues and the areas between the dots need to be clickable. http://i.stack.imgur.com/U1kXn.gif http://i.stack.imgur.com/RMwiv.gif I would like to create the game in VB .NET. What data structures should I try to use, and would it be beneficial using any frameworks such as XNA?

  • Which game engine for HTML5 + Node.js

    - by Chrene
    I want to create a realtime multiplayer game using and HTML5. I want to use node.js as the server, and I only need to be able to render images in a canvas, play some sounds, and do some basic animations. The gameloop should be done in the server, and the client should do callback via sockets to render the canvas. I am not going to spend any money on the engine, and I don't want to use cocos2d-javascript.

  • How much isometric sprites can one optimize by mirroring and alike?

    - by Tom
    I am working on a basic isometric game, and am struggling to find the correct mirrors. I have managed to get SE out of SW, by scaling the sprite on X axis by -1. Same applies for NE angle. Something is bugging me, that I should be able to also mirror N to S, but I cannot manage to pull this one off. Am I just too sleepy and trying to do the impossible, or a basic -1 scale on Y axis is not enough? What are the common used mirror table for optimizing 8 angle (N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW) isometric sprites?

  • Getting an object from a 2d array inside of a class

    - by user36324
    I am have a class file that contains two classes, platform and platforms. platform holds the single platform information, and platforms has an 2d array of platforms. Im trying to render all of them in a for loop but it is not working. If you could kindly help me i would greatly appreciate. void Platforms::setUp() { for(int x = 0; x < tilesW; x++){ for(int y = 0; y < tilesH; y++){ Platform tempPlat(x,y,true,renderer,filename,tileSize/scaleW,tileSize/scaleH); platArray[x][y] = tempPlat; } } } void Platforms::show() { for(int x = 0; x < tilesW; x++){ for(int y = 0; y < tilesH; y++){ platArray[x][y].show(renderer,scaleW,scaleH); } } }

  • How to only render part of an image in lwjgl/openGL

    - by Ephyxia
    I'm making a mining/building game in java using slick2D and I want to make it so you can only see a few blocks in any direction while you are underground. The best example I could find of what I want to do is the game miner dig deep. One way I thought of doing it would be to have a large image and just draw transparent areas on it where you need to be able too see but even if that would be an efficient method I wouldn't be sure how to do that.

  • Techniques for lighting a texture (no shadows)

    - by Paul Manta
    I'm trying to learn about dynamic shadows for 2D graphics. While I understand the basic ideas behind determining what areas should be lit and which should be in shadow, I don't know how I would "lighten" a texture in the first place. Could you go over various popular techniques for lighting a texture and what (dis)advantages each one has? Also, how is lighting a texture with colored light different from using white light?

  • Spritegroups and colorkeys

    - by Fristi
    I have a problem using spritegroups in pygame. In my situation I have 2 spritegroups, one for humans, one for "infected". A human is represented by a blue circle: image = pygame.Surface((32,32)) image.fill((255,255,255)) pygame.draw.circle(image,(0,0,255),(16,16),16) image = image.convert() image.set_colorkey((255,255,255)) An infected by a red one (same code, different color). I update my spritegroups as follows: self.humans.clear(self.screen, self.bg) self.humans.update(time_passed) self.humans.draw(self.screen) self.infected.clear(self.screen, self.bg) self.infected.update(time_passed) self.infected.draw(self.screen) Self.bg is defined: self.bg = pygame.Surface((SCREEN_WIDTH, SCREEN_HEIGHT)) self.bg.fill((255,255,255)) self.bg.convert() This all works, except that when a red circle overlaps with a blue one, you can see the white corners of the bounding box around the actual circle. Within a spritegroup it works, using the set_colorkey function. This does not happen with overlapping blue circles or overlapping red circles. I tried adding a colorkey to self.bg but that did not work. Same for adding a colorkey to self.screen.

  • OpenGLES 2.0 gluunProject

    - by secheung
    I've spent more time than i should trying to get my ray picking program working. I'm pretty convinced my math is solid with respect to line plane intersection, but I believe the problem lies with the changing of the mouse screen touch into 3D world space. Heres my code public void passTouchEvents(MotionEvent e){ int[] viewport = {0,0,viewportWidth,viewportHeight}; float x = e.getX(), y = viewportHeight - e.getY(); float[] pos1 = new float[4]; float[] pos2 = new float[4]; GLU.gluUnProject( x, y, 0.0f, mViewMatrix, 0, mProjectionMatrix, 0, viewport, 0, pos1, 0); GLU.gluUnProject( x, y, 1.0f, mViewMatrix, 0, mProjectionMatrix, 0, viewport, 0, pos2, 0); } Just as a reference I've tried transforming the coordinates 0,0,0 and got an offset. It would be appreciated if you would answer using opengl es 2.0 code. Thanks

  • Sprite animation problem

    - by hustlerinc
    I have this sprite I have to animate. The sprite is 7 images total but animation is 10 frames (2 positions are repeated). The order I want to go through the frames is like this: 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 0 - 2. My problem is how can I skip 1 frame once I reach the end of each direction? The reason I want to skip is to save me from creating duplicate positions in the spritesheet. I'm doing this in Javascript.

  • How can I perform a masked erase in SDL2?

    - by Kvisle
    I'm trying to implement some shadow/lighting effects in my 2D-project, and I've concluded that if there is an easy way to perform a masked erase on an SDL_Texture, it would make the drawing operations quite cheap. Let's say I have a texture of the part of the level where light is not meant to be rendered. I also have a texture with my "light map"; I want to use this to just draw omni lights from my light sources. Then I want to use the first image to 'subtract' the portions of the light map that are not to be rendered on the final scene. Then I draw my "light map" texture on top of my scene, with additive blending enabled. This sounds like a good theory in my head, but I can't see any functions in the SDL2 API that let me do masked erase from a texture. Am I overlooking something? Does anything like this exist?

  • Should I drawing directly on CCLayer or CCSprite?

    - by einverne
    Now I am a little confused in my cocos2d-x cpp project. I want to draw lines with user's finger touch. Following the screenshot of a CCScene: In the screen, there are two squares. I want show an animation in the first square and let the second one draw lines with user touch. Now these two squares are CCSprite. And I can draw dots in the second one on the CCLayer. But I am little confused that I should draw lines on the Sprite or on the Layer. Or are there other ways to organize the code?

  • How do I swap two objects in a GC language without triggering GC?

    - by TenFour04
    I have two array lists. that I want to swap each frame. My question is, does the variable 'temp' need to be a member variable to avoid triggering GC, assuming this method is called on dozens of objects each frame? I'm not creating a new object, just a new reference to an object. public void LateUpdate(){ ArrayList<int> temp = previousFrameCollisions; previousFrameCollisions = currentFrameCollisions; currentFrameCollisions = temp; currentFrameCollisions.clear(); } I've been told there's no reason to make a primitive into a member variable just to avoid GC, so my best guess is that this also applies to object references.
