• resize image without image quality reduction

  In web design , it's usually needed to design an image for example in Photoshop and then use multiple sizes of it. but I don't understand something here : When I resize the image (PNG or JPG) and reduce the dimensions of that in Photoshop , the image quality extremely gets reduced and the edges become messy while resizing the image in a simple software like Microsoft Paint gives a really better output! So what's the reason ? Is there a trick in Photoshop for image resizing which I've missed? Thanks for your help. UPDATE: I resize in this way : image image size , then enter new dimensions , all of checkboxes are checked , and have tried all of resample modes including Bicubic sharper

• Meaning of offset in pygame Mask.overlap methods

  I have a situation in which two rectangles collide, and I have to detect how much did they collide so so I can redraw the objects in a way that they are only touching each others edges. It's a situation in which a moving ball should hit a completely unmovable wall and instantly stop moving. Since the ball sometimes moves multiple pixels per screen refresh, it it possible that it enters the wall with more that half its surface when the collision is detected, in which case i want to shift it position back to the point where it only touches the edges of the wall. Here is the conceptual image it: I decided to implement this with masks, and thought that i could supply the masks of both objects (wall and ball) and get the surface (as a square) of their intersection. However, there is also the offset parameter which i don't understand. I've configured another machine which will be in bridging and mail server would be behind that it. How can i filter spam emails in bridging server without running any smtp services. Scenario Internet +------+ Spamfilter Server (in bridging mode) +---------+ MailServer SmartHost will work for outgoing email. In this scenario i can filter all incoming emails. There is also another option of DNS which i don't want to use.

• How to fetch only the sprites in the player's range of motion for collision testing? (2D, axis aligned sprites)

  I am working on a 2D sprite game for educational purposes. (In case you want to know, it uses WebGl and Javascript) I've implemented movement using the Euler method (and delta time) to keep things simple. Now I'm trying to tackle collisions. The way I wrote things, my game only has rectangular sprites (axis aligned, never rotated) of various/variable sizes. So I need to figure out what I hit and which side of the target sprite I hit (and I'm probably going to use these intersection tests). The old fashioned method seems to be to use tile based grids, to target only a few tiles at a time, but that sounds silly and impractical for my game. (Splitting the whole level into blocks, having each sprite's bounding box fit multiple blocks I might abide. But if the sprites change size and move around, you have to keep changing which tiles they belong to, every frame, it doesn't sound right.) In Flash you can test collision under one point, but it's not efficient to iterate through all the elements on stage each frame. (hence why people use the tile method). Bottom line is, I'm trying to figure out how to test only the elements within the player's range of motion. (I know how to get the range of motion, I have a good idea of how to write a collisionCheck(playerSprite, targetSprite) function. But how do I know which sprites are currently in the player's vicinity to fetch only them?) Please discuss. Cheers!

• How should I safely send bulk mail? [closed]

  First of all, we have a large software system we've developed and have a number of clients using it in their own environment. Each of them is responsible for using their own equipment and resources, we don't provide any services to share with them. We have introduced an automated email system which sends emails automatically via SMTP. Usually, it only sends around 10-20 emails a day, but it's very possible to send bulk email up to thousands of people in a single day. This of course requires a big haul of work, which isn't necessarily the problem. The issue arises when it comes to the SMTP server we're using. An email server is issued a number of relays a day, which is paid for. This isn't really necessarily the issue either. The risk is getting the email server blacklisted. It's inevitable, and we need to carefully take all this into consideration. As far as I can see, the ideal setup would be to have at least 50 IP addresses on multiple servers, each of which hosts its own SMTP server. When sending bulk email, it will divide them up across these servers, and each one will process its own queue. If one of those IP's gets blacklisted, it will be decommissioned and a new IP will replace it. Is there a better way that doesn't require us to invest in a large handful of servers? Perhaps a third party service which is meant exactly for this?

  I've never understood how formatting works in MSWord for lists... it mostly just works but sometimes becomes incredibly stubborn about enforcing styles you don't want, especially when copy-pasting into a list and working with multiple, multi-layer lists. What are some good ways to understand how it works, so one can work with Word, instead of fighting against it? Here's an example... I want a list like: 1)first test CHECK: a)something b)another thing 2)another test CHECK: a)it works b)it doesn't crash I find Word really doesn't like this... I try creating one mini-list and copy pasting but typically the numbering on the sub-lists doesn't re-start automatically, etc. I'm using Word 2007 but I remember it being this way in earlier versions too.

• Web-based (intranet / non-hosted) timesheet / project tracking tools

  I realize some similar questions have been asked along these lines before, but from reading-through them today, it appears they don't match my use case. I am looking for a web-based, non-hosted time and project tracking tool. I've downloaded Collabtive so far, but am looking for other suggestions, too. My list of requirements: runs on standard LAMP stack non-hosted (ie, there is an option to download and run it on a local server) not a desktop/single-user application easy-to-use - my audience is a mix of technical and non-technical folks easy to maintain - when time for upgrading comes, I'd really like to not have to rebuild the app (a la ./configure ; make ; make install) needs to support multiple users free-form project additions: we don't have a central project management authority (users should be able to add whatever they're working on, not merely from a drop-down) Does anyone here have experience with such tools? It doesn't have to be free.. but free is always nice :)

• How do I install and use Windows Virtual PC in Windows 8?

  I really like the integrated Virtual Machine that Windows had built-in with Windows 7 with Windows Virtual PC. I'm looking to install that again. I'd like to be able to install multiple machines as I did before (XP, Ubuntu, Etc,.) but I can't seem to find Windows Virtual PC for Windows 8 any more. Is it still available?, and if not was there something setup in place to replace it? How do I use it? • Weird problem with connection from putty to ubuntu server via SSH

  Hello. I have an Ubuntu Server 9.10 box with sshd configured. I have two computers with Windows 7 professional and putty installed. Day ago, both computers was able to connect ubuntu server both via putty and plink. I have installed sun-java6-jre on ubuntu server, and now have a weird problem. First Windows 7 computer can still connect with both putty GUI and command-line plink. Second computer can connect via putty gui, but if i issue plink command that works perfectly on first computer: plink www.hostname.tk -i c:\users\username\documents\key\private.ppk I get login prompt, enter same username as on first computer, and receive following weird error message: bash: www.hostname.tk: command not found I can't see any difference between my Windows 7 computers :(. The ppk key used is same (i copied it multiple times both ways). hostname and username are same. Anyone have any ideas why such thing happens and what can i do in order to troubleshoot and fix it?

  We're looking for a good office jukebox solution where staff can select songs via a web interface to be played over the central set of speakers. Must haves: Web Interface RSS / easy to scrap display of currently playing songs Ability to play mp3s and manage an ordered playlist. Good cataloguing of media. Multiple OSs supported as clients - Windows, Mac, Fedora Linux (will probably be accomplished by virtue of a web interface). We have tried XBMC which worked well as a proof of concept however the web interface is just too immature and has too many bugs for a reliable multi-user solution. I believe the same will be true of boxee. Nice to have: Ability to play music videos onto a monitor Ability to listen to radio streams specifically Shoutcast and the BBC. Ability to run on Linux is a nice to have but windows solutions which worked well would certainly be considered. I am aware of question 61404 and don't believe this to be a duplicate due to the specific requirements.

• Design pattern for client/server sessions?

  Are there any common patterns or general guidance I can learn from for how to design a client/server system where the both the client and server must maintain some kind per-client session state? I've found any number of libraries that can help with some of the plumbing, but it's the overall design I'm wondering about. Open issues in my mind: How to structure the client/server communication so that bidirectional synchronous and asynchronous requests are possible? The server side needs to spawn a couple of per-connected-client session-long helper process. How to manage that? How to manage the mapping from a given client (and any of it's requests) to server state and helper process instances in the face of multiple clients and intermittent network connectivity. Most communication can be simple blocking request/reply, but some will be long running processing tasks that the client will want to keep tabs on. To the extent that it matters, the platform is Linux/C/C++. Not web based. Just an existing thick-client software app being modified to talk to backend servers for some tasks.

• How to create single integer index value based on two integers where first is unlimited?

  I have table data containing an integer value X ranging from 1.... unknown, and an integer value Y ranging from 1..9 The data need to be presented in order 'X then Y'. For one visual component I can set multiple index names: X;Y But for another component I need a one-dimensional integer value as index (sort order). If X were limited to an upper bound of say 100, the one-dimensional value could simply be X*100 + Y. If the one-dimensional value could have been a real, it could be X + Y/10. But if I want to keep X unlimited, is there a way to calculate a single integer 'indexing' value from X and Y? [Added] Background information: I have a Gantt/TreeList component where the tasks are ordered on a TaskIndex integer. This does not need to be a real database field, I can make it a calculated field in the underlying client dataset. My table data is e.g. as follows: ID Baseline ParentID 1 0 0 (task) 5 2 1 (baseline) 8 1 1 (baseline) 9 0 0 (task) 12 0 0 (task) 16 1 12 (baseline) Task 1 has two baselines numbered 1 and 2 (IDs 8 and 5) Task 9 has no baselines Task 12 has one baseline numbered 1 (ID 16) Baselines number 1-9 (the Y variable from my question); 0 or null identify the tasks ID's are unlimited (the X variable) The user plays with visibility of baselines, e.g. he wants to see all tasks with all baselines labeled 1. This is done by updating a filter on the table. Right now I constantly have to recalculate TaskIndex after changing the filter (looping through records). It would be nice if TaskIndex could be calculated on the fly for each record knowing only the data in the current record (I work in Delphi where a client dataset has an OnCalcFields event handler, that is triggered for each record when necessary). I have no control over the inner workings of the visual component.

• Creating an office network and monitoring all activity without a proxy

  We are setting up our office network and would like to track all the websites visited by our employees. However, we would not like to use any proxy based solutions. Our work is highly dependent on applications in which you cannot configure a proxy. Hence, the approach we would like to follow is setting up a router inside a computer (something like this : http://www.techrepublic.com/article/configure-windows-server-2003-to-act-as-a-router/5844624) This will also allow us to attach multiple ethernet cards and have redundancy in internet connectivity with complete abstraction from the user about which connection is being used. But most importantly, since all the traffic will be going through the computer (configured as a router) I assume there will be a way to run packet analysis on all the request / responses being made. For example, list all the FTP servers connected to (port 21), give a graph of all the URLs visited per day by frequency. Is there already a software which does this ? Or is it possible to build something like this ?

• Koans, now available in Python flavor

  Recently a Python developer friend with whom I was pair programming with suggested that I show him how to write a little Ruby. I responded by telling him to check out Ruby Koans as a starting point. However I wanted to try that in reverse at the same time with me learning some Python. I did a bit of googling, and sure enough someone had started writing some Python Koans. It just needed finishing... So, a few weeks later Python Koans is now complete and ready for action! It is available through Mercurial on Bitbucket: http://bitbucket.org/gregmalcolm/python_koans/wiki/Home It is also mirrored on Github: http://wiki.github.com/gregmalcolm/python_koans/ Converting it was fairly easy. Aside from the differing philosophical approaches behind the two languages, Ruby and Python are fairly similar. We had to come up with completely new material for a few subjects like multiple inheritance and decorators, but for most features in Ruby there is something roughly comparable in Python. I highly recommend writing tests (or koans) as a means to lean a new language or framework. I've learned a lot from doing this.

• zabbix monitoring mysql database

  I have a server running multiple instances of mysql and also has the zabbix-agent running. In zabbix_agentd.conf i have specified: UserParameter=multi.mysql[*],mysqladmin --socket=$1 -uzabbixagent extended-status 2>/dev/null | awk '/ $3 /{print $$4}' where $1 is the socket instance. From the zabbix server i can run the test successfully. zabbix_get -s ip_of_server -k multi.mysql[/var/lib/mysql/mysql2.sock] and it returns all the values However the zabbix item/trigger does not generate the graphs, I have created a MACRO for $1 which is the socket location {$MYSQL_SOCKET1} = '/var/lib/mysql/mysql2.sock' and i use this key in items to poll the value multi.mysql[{$MYSQL_SOCKET1},Bytes_sent] LOGS: this is what i get on the logs: 3360:20120214:144716.278 item [multi.mysql['/var/lib/mysql/mysql2.sock',Bytes_received]] error: Special characters '\'"`*?[]{}~$!&;()<>|#@' are not allowed in the parameters 3360:20120214:144716.372 item [multi.mysql['/var/lib/mysql/mysql2.sock',Bytes_sent]] error: Special characters '\'"`*?[]{}~$!&;()<>|#@' are not allowed in the parameters Any ideas where the problem could be? • How to create chroot jail with ability to change some system settings

  How to properly create chroot jail (on Ubuntu, or some some other Linux if not applicable) to make user able to edit system settings (eg. with ifconfig) and be able to communicate with external scripts? The use case would be to enable user to authenticate using SSH and then be able to perform very limited set of actions from command line. Unfortunately the tricky part is the access to system settings. I have considered multiple options and the alternative is to setup fake SSH server (eg. with Twisted), try to use restricted shell (however, I seem to need chroot still), or write a script on top of the shell (?).

• Insurers Pushed to Transform Their Business

  Everyone in the P&C industry has heard it “We can’t do it.” “Nobody wants to do it.” “We can’t afford to do it.”  Unfortunately, what they’re referencing are the reasons many insurers are still trying to maintain their business processing on legacy policy administration systems, attempting to bide time until there is no other recourse but to give in, bite the bullet, and take on the monumental task of replacing an entire policy administration system (PAS). Just the thought of that project sends IT, Business Users and Management reeling. However, is that fear real?  It is a bit daunting when one realizes that a complete policy administration system replacement will touch most every function an insurer manages, from quoting and rating, to underwriting, distribution, and even customer service. With that, everyone has heard at least one horror story around a transformation initiative that has far exceeded budget and the promised implementation / go-live timeline.    But, does it have to be that hard?  Surely, in the age where a person can voice-activate their DVR to record a TV program from a cell phone, there has to be someone somewhere who’s figured out how to simplify this process. To be able to help insurers, of all sizes, transform and grow their business while also delivering on their overall objectives of providing speed to market, straight-through-processing for applications, quoting, underwriting, and simplified product development. Maybe we’re looking too hard and the answer is simple and straight-forward. Why replace the entire machine when all it really needs is a new part…a single enterprise rating system? This core, modular piece of the policy administration system is the foundation of product development and rate management that enables insurers to provide the right product at the right price to the right customer through the best channels at any given moment in time. The real benefit of a single enterprise rating system is the ability to deliver enhanced business capabilities, such as improved product management, streamlined underwriting, and speed to market. With these benefits, carriers have accomplished a portion of their overall transformation goal. Furthermore, lessons learned from the rating project can be applied to the bigger, down-the-road PAS project to support the successful completion of the overall transformation endeavor. At the recent Oracle OpenWorld Conference in San Francisco, information was shared with attendees about a recent “go-live” project from an Oracle Insurance Tier 1 insurer who did what is proposed above…replaced just the rating portion of their legacy policy administration system with Oracle Insurance Insbridge Rating and Underwriting.  This change provided the insurer greater flexibility to set rates that better reflect risk while enabling the company to support its market segment strategy. Using the Oracle Insurance Insbridge enterprise rating solution, the insurer was able to reduce processing time for agents and underwriters, gained the ability to support proprietary rating models and improved pricing accuracy.      There is mounting pressure on P&C insurers to produce growth and show net profitability in the midst of modest overall industry growth, large weather-related losses and intensifying competition for market share.  Insurers are also being asked to improve customer service, offer a differentiated value proposition and simplify insurance processes.  While the demands are many there is an easy answer…invest in and update the most mission critical application in your arsenal, the single enterprise rating system.   I am a newcomer to data warehouses and have what I hope is an easy question about building a star schema: If I have a fact table where a fact record naturally has a one-to-many relationship with a single dimension, how can a star schema be modeled to support this? For example: Fact Table: Point of Sale entry (the measurement is DollarAmount) Dimension Table: Promotions (these are sales promotions in effect when a sale was made) The situation is that I want a single Point Of Sale entry to be associated with multiple different Promotions. These Promotions cannot be their own dimensions as there are many many many promotions. How do I do this?

• new project; entire node.js app

  I have been looking into Node.js, express and Nowjs and love how easy it is to have real time interactions between clients. My background is mostly from CodeIgniter MVC using PHP and MYSql. I want to re make a current web project of mine from scratch to make everything better and more real time with this newer technology. After researching and doing test examples I want to use node.js , express and Nowjs for the real time interactions once someone connects to the socket.io to pull data back to clients. But use Code Igniter for the control of the site and user management , possible shopping cart/store , pretty much everything else. This is purely due to time constraints and that I am already familiar with doing it that way. I have been looking at MongoDB as an alternative to MySql, Basically the app is going to be multiple chat rooms all on one page. with the ability of notifications and private messaging. Lots of data transfer and images. before I started piecing it together I wanted to get people who have already done something similar. My model would use Code Igniter and MySQL to render the page and then connect them onto a node.js server and broadcast using express and nowjs would using a mongoDB be better than mySQL for tons of messages and data being stored or MYSQL? Also does it make since to not make the whole site on Node.js , kinda piece it together like that?
