• wuinstall doesn't work with winrs

  I've been having issues with psexec so I've been migrating to use winrs (part of the winrm system). It's a very nice remoting tool which is proving to be more reliable then psexec. Wuinstall is used to install available windows updates. The two however don't play well together. I'm working on a verity of windows servers 2003, 2008 and 2008r2. Wuinstall behaves the same across all hosts and behaves as expected if executed locally by the same user. • Screen scraping software that will traverse pages

  We're creating a mashup site that pulls information from many sources all over the web. Many of these sites don't provide RSS feeds or APIs to access the information they provide. This leaves us with screen scraping as our method for collecting the data. There are many scripting tools out there written in different scripting languages for screen scraping that require you to write scraping scripts in the language the scraper was written in. Scrapy, scrAPI, and scrubyt are a few written in Ruby and Python. There are other web-based tools I've seen like Dapper that create XML or RSS feeds based on a webpage. It has a beautiful web-based interface that requires no scripting skills to use. This would be a great tool, if it were able to traverse multiple pages to gather data from hundreds pages of results. We need something that will scrape information from paginated web sites, much like scrubyt, but with a user interface that a non-programmer could use. We'll script up our own solution if we need to, probably using scrubyt, but if there's a better solution out there, we want to use it. Does anything like this exist?

• Custom forms in Sharepoint with MS SQL Server as Backend. Is it possible?

  We're evaluating using SharePoint 2010 as our project management tool. Specifically, the system needs to satisfy the following: Discussion groups Project management (simple issue tracking, no complex workflows or vcs integrations) News feed for the project(s) File sharing based on authorization/user-roles Custom homepage Custom forms using MS SQL Server as a backend and contents of old forms searchable from the user interface. Now, I think [1-5] is possible using SharePoint (Comments are always welcome :)). I'm not sure about [6]. Is it possible? For instance, can an admin or a user of the SharePoint portal, create a custom form (without any programming) that uses MS SQL Server as a backend and publish it to the portal so that other users can also perform data entry? If it can be done (be it with or without some programming), can users perform text search on form data using the SharePoint interface?

• VSS Post Backup failures for Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 virtual machines

  We've been seeing strange errors with Volume Shadow Copy services on our Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 host. It appears to be failing on a strange mountpoint in the C:\WINDOWS\Temp\ folders, which I believe is used by VSS to mount a writeable image file. To summarize: The Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Writer continually goes into a failed retryable state The Virtual Server log reports errors during the Post Backup phase VSS reports errors backing up a mount point of unknown origins The mount point causes NTFS and ftdisk errors The host is x86 Windows Server 2003 Standard, SP2. The virtual machine is the same. Both use basic disks. My current theory is that VSS creates a mount point for an image file of the VHD, then the software panics for some reason, leaving everything in an inconsistent state. Removing the mount point doesn't resolve the problem. All of the other disks check out fine with CHKDSK. There's no exclusion option for VHDs or to turn off online backups. Has anyone seen this kind of thing before or point me in the right direction for getting more information about the mount point and it's origins? I haven't been able to trace what application is creating that mount point.

• Enabling syntax highlighting for LESS in Programmer's Notepad?

  When I don't feel like firing up the Visual Studio behemoth, or when I don't have it installed, I always turn to Programmer's Notepad. It's an amazingly light and fast little text editor, with the special advantage that it is completely platform-native and conforms to standard UI conventions. Therefore, please do not suggest that I consider using other text editors. I've already considered and rejected them because they do not use native UI controls. I like Programmer's Notepad, thank you very much. Unfortunately, I've recently begun to learn, use, and love LESS for all of my CSS coding needs, and it appears that Programmer's Notepad is not bundled with a syntax highlighting scheme for LESS. Does anyone know if there is—by chance and good fortune—one already available somewhere on the web that some kind soul has tediously prepared? If not, how can I go about writing one of my own? Is there a way to build on the existing CSS scheme? It's also possible that any code coloring scheme designed for Scintilla-based editors will work, as Programmer's Notepad is based on the Scintilla control. If you know of a LESS highlighting scheme for Scintilla-based editors, and how to use that with Programmer's Notepad, please suggest that as well.

• New Computer Build Questions

  I'm in the process of gathering parts and specs for a new machine. I wear many hats, so the machine needs to do a lot. I need at least 2 monitor support, if not three. I also play many online MMOs (wow, aion, war hammer, etc), along with some freelance programming projects. I already have a case which is very large, so it will fit anything. I have 2 other SATA HDs. They are more for storage and basic programs. I feel that the best improvement could be done with a solid state HD, true or not? I'm more of a software/programming guy, so ANY input at all on improving this system build would be appreciated. I have a few questions with this list. AMD or Intel? I don't know enough about either to choose what would best fit me. Thanks! **EDIT: Thanks for the input everyone! Here are some answers: I do a lot of programming and gaming, so I do need things for both. The newer video card covers the gaming aspect, as well as allowing me to have many monitors. (hopefully upgrade to dual 30' or more) I don't need any additional HDs at this time. I have a SATA 160g and 120g from my previous computer, and a NAS system with over 2TB of storage on the homenetwork. I just wanted a fast HD for OS/programs/games. With the memory.   I just tried to install windows 8.1 on my laptop, but it fails to install with the message: Sorry we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We restored your previous version of Windows to this PC 0xC1900101 - 0x20017 It looks like on the first boot that the laptop is going to the PC restore screen (it asks what kind of keyboard I have, and then what repair optins I would like to take). Thus far I have just been selecting "Continue to windows 8." I'm running a Lenovo x220i tablet. I've got 43GB of free disk space. It installed just fine on my desktop. The primary difference between the two machines is that the desktop has media center install, and isn't using TrueCrypt. • Windows 2003 R2 x86 Mini dump fails to write to disk

  I have 3 blade servers that are Blue Screening with a 0xC2 error as far as we can tell randomly. When it started happening I found that the servers weren't set to do provide a dump because they each have 16GB RAM and a 16GB swap file divided over 4 partitions in 4GB files. I set them to provided a small dump file (64K mini dump), but the dump files aren't being written. On start up the server event log is reporting both Event ID 45 "The system could not sucessfully load the crash dump driver." and Event ID 49 "Configuring the Page file for crash dump failed. Make sure there is a page file on the boot partition and that is large enough to contain all physical memory." I understanding is the the small dump shouldn't need a swap file large enough for all physical memory, but the error seems to point to this not being the case. The issue of course is that the max swap file size is 4GB, so this seems to be impossible. Can anyone point me where to go from here?

• MultiPath configuration on RHEL5 and Clariion CX-300

  I have problem with discovering my FC-connected CX-300 storage. Frankly speaking I'm complete novice in FibreChannel, so step by step explanation would be appreciated. My configuration consist of two IBM HS20 blades with RHEL5.4 on board and 2x Qlogic ISP2422-based 4Gb Fibre Channel HBAs on each blade. As a FC switch there are two Brocades built in BladeCenter Chassis, and finally there is EMC Clariion CX-300. CX300, and Brocade switches should be configured properly, because they were working fine with previous configuration, which main defference was RHEL3 instead RHEL5.4 Below there is my output from several usefull commands: #lspci | grep Fibre 06:01.0 FibreChannle: Qlogic Corp. • RPCSS kerberos issues on imaged Windows workstations

  While doing some unrelated troubleshooting I came across a set of Event Log entries that have me concerned. Machine Name: labcomputer82 Source: Security-Kerberos Event ID: 4 Event Description: The Kerberos client received a KRB_AP_ERR_MODIFIED error from the server labcomputer143$. The target name used was RPCSS/imagemaster4.ad.domain.edu. This indicates that the target server failed to decrypt the ticket provided by the client. This can occur when the target server principal name (SPN) is registered on an account other than the account the target service is using. Please ensure that the target SPN is registered on, and only registered on, the account used by the server. This error can also happen when the target service is using a different password for the target service account than what the Kerberos Key Distribution Center (KDC) has for the target service account. Please ensure that the service on the server and the KDC are both updated to use the current password. If the server name is not fully qualified, and the target domain (AD.DOMAIN.EDU) is different from the client domain (AD.DOMAIN.EDU), check if there are identically named server accounts in these two domains, or use the fully-qualified name to identify the server. There are three machine names used in this message. It's generated on labcomputer82, it's attempting to talk to another lab workstation called labcomputer143, and the service in question (RPCSS) refers to the name of the machine that this machine was imaged from (and possibly also that of labcomputer143, I'm not sure). The thing that has me raising both eyebrows is that the machine named labcomputer82 is attempting to use an SPN of RPCSS/imagemaster4.ad.domain.edu. The SPN attribute on the computer object in AD looks just fine. It has all the names it should have. Of the over 3,000 computer objects in our AD domain, somewhere around 1,700 of the are computer-lab seats that are frequently imaged. If we're doing something wrong, I'd like to know in time to get our procedures modified (and people retrained) for fall quarter. But if this is normal for imaged machines, I'll just continue ignoring these.

• Hyper-V virtual machine can't be migrated to a specific host in the cluster

  I have a three-node Hyper-V cluster running on Windows Server 2008 R2 which is working quite flawlessly: there are no errors, live migration works, all hosts can and will happily run all virtual machines, and so on. But one specific virtual machinee is trying to make me go mad: it works on two nodes of the cluster, but not on the third one. Whenever I try to move the VM to that node, be it in a live migration or with the VM powered off, it always fails. In the event log of the host these events are logged: Source: Hyper-V-VMMS Event ID: 16300 Cannot load a virtual machine configuration: General access denied error (0x80070005) (Virtual machine ID <GUID>) Source: Hyper-V-VMMS Evend ID: 20100 The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to register the configuration for the virtual machine '<GUID>' at 'C:\ClusterStorage\<PATH>\<VM>': General access denied error (0x80070005) Source: Hyper-V-High-Availability Event ID: 21102 'Virtual Machine Configuration <VM>' failed to register the virtual machine with the virtual machine management service. All other VMs can be moved to/from the offending host, and the offending VM can be moved between the other two hosts. Also, this is not a storage problem, because there are other VMs in the same cluster volume, and the host has no troubles running them. What's going on here?

• How can I access a webDAV folder as a UNC share?

  first of all I am just getting to know about webDAV and appreciate your patience. I have a virtual directory on IIS 6 (windows 2003) that is based on a network share on a file server different from web server. something like www.mysite.com/myreports where myreport is based on \myfileserver\reports. I have been asked by network folks to not use the UNC path like that for security reason and try to explore using webDAV. What I have been told is webDAV can give me a UNC path without requiring to open the ports required for a file server UNC path. Then I can use the new UNC path to map my virtual directory and my asp.net code will not require any change. Help: Being new to webDAV, I did some research over the web. I now can create a web folder in fileserver. I put IIS on file server as well. I can browse the content as http:://fileserver/mywebDAVreports which is based on reports folder. But I don't know how to get a UNC for this web folder to be able to map my virtual directory on web server. I appreciate any help on this. Regards, Amar

• Remote search system for samba shares

  I have several shares residing on a samba server in a small business environment that I would like to provide search facilities for. Ideally this would be something like google desktop with some extra features (see below), but lacking this the idea is to take what I can get, or at least get an idea for what is out there. Using google desktop search as a reference model, the principle additional requirement is that it is usable from clients over the network. In addition there are some other notes (note that none of these are hard requirements) The content is always files, residing on a single server, accessible from samba shares. Standard ms office document fare Also a lot of rars and zips which it is necessary to search inside. Permissions support, allowing for user-based control to reflect current permission access in samba shares. The userbase will remain fairly static, so manual management of users is fine. majority of users will be Windows based I know there are plenty of search indexers out there: beagle and tracker seem to be the most popular. Most do not seem to offer access control and web-based/remote search does not seem to be high priority. I've also seen a recent post on the samba mailing list asking for pretty much the exact same thing. (They mention a product called IBM OmniFind Yahoo! Edition and while their initial reception seems positive, I am pretty skeptical. RHEL 4? Firefox 2? Updated much?) What else is out there? Are you in a similar situation? What do you use?

• VMWare-Mount not recognizing virtual disks

  I have two disks as .vmdk files, and four as .vdi files. I can boot virtual machines on them with Sun xMV VirtualBox, and they work just fine. However, I want to mount them on my local computer so I can read some files off of them without starting a virtual machine. I downloaded the vmware-mount utility, but I get this error, even when mounting .vmdk files, which should be VMWare images... Unable to mount the virtual disk. The disk may be in use by a virtual machine, may not have enough volumes or mounted under another drive letter. If not, verify that the file is a valid virtual disk file. Thinking it's a problem with the utility, I downloaded the SDK and made my own simple program in C to try to mount a disk. It just initializes the API, connects to it, then attempts to open the disk. I get this error, once again claiming it is not a virtual disk: **LOG: DISKLIB-DSCPTR: descriptor above max size: I64u **LOG: DISKLIB-LINK : "f:\programming\VMs\windowstrash.vdi" : failed to open (The file specified is not a virtual disk). **LOG: DISKLIB-CHAIN : "f:\programming\VMs\windowstrash.vdi" : failed to open (The file specified is not a virtual disk). **LOG: DISKLIB-LIB : Failed to open 'f:\programming\VMs\windowstrash.vdi' with flags 0x1e (The file specified is not a virtual disk). ** FAILURE ** : The file specified is not a virtual disk The files are clearly virtual disks, though, since I can actually mount and use them with a virtual machine. I tried detaching them from any VMs and trying again, but I got the same results. Any ideas? Maybe the "descriptor above max size" is a hint? Some more info: the .vmdk disks were created on other computers. I just copied them to mine and created new VMs around them, but they work fine. All the .vdi files were created on my machine. Not sure if that affects anything. Update: WinMount can mount the file.. so the problem seems to be with vmware-mount.

• Why does `rpm` show 3 httpd packages, and which one provides the real httpd?

  I ran yum update on my CentOS5 webserver a few days ago. Today I just noticed that I have 3 httpd-* rpms! How can I end up with three RPMs for httpd (My other servers only have one httpd rpm). I want to make sure that my server has a patched, updated version of /usr/sbin/httpd. How can I tell which one of these packages provides the httpd binary at /usr/sbin/httpd? During a RAM upgrade of the standby server, our websites started to show errors about not being able to access the database server. I verified that the instance was indeed up and the server accessable via remote desktop. I also tried a SQL connection to it and it worked, but that might have been after it became available again. This happened on and off until we were able to roll back the hardware changes that were in progress on the standby server and we were able to bring it back up. There was nothing of interest in the SQL Server log, but there is a continous log for the whole duration of the problem, so there was no restart of the SQL Server service. The event viewer is of more interest, since it shows events relating to the heartbeat network card, but I don't know how that would affect the availability of the server, since the standby node is offline. I'd appreciate any help you can provide, it's not very redundant if the setup depends on the standby server being up. :) Here are the event logs from the time of the problem, I include all of them since I can't seem to see what could possibly be the cause of the problem. • SharePoint Records Center Submitted E-mail Records not picked up

  We have set up a new SharePoint 2007 site with a Records Repository. We're using Exchange 2007 Managed Folders to route e-mails to this repository based on the 'label' attached to the e-mail as set in the Exchange 2007 journaling options. E-mails added to a Managed Folder get sent to SharePoint, they end up in the "Submitted E-mail Records" list of the Records Repository. That's according to plan, but the e-mails are not routed to the respective document library as defined by the label. Instead an error appears in the event viewer for every e-mail listed in the Submitted E-mail Records list, on every interval of the records repository schedule (set to every two minutes for testing purposes): Value cannot be null, parameter name: g. Sending a document from the SharePoint site iself to the Records Repository via the Send To... link works fine, but e-mails get stuck in the list... We have set Document Libraries in the Respository with and without content types (with matching names with the Label and the Record Routing rule set). Any ideas what could be wrong? • Software distribution from web server to client using PHP/FTP

  I develop and maintain a number of add-ons and utilities for various widget (mainly aMember) which generally means I need to install php based codes onto other people's systems. Whilst I have a VPS and have access to rsync and all sorts of yummy tools most of the people I deal with have a basic ftp access and that's all folks. To upload from my local system is also a problem as I am satellite based (two-way) so it is fairly slow and expensive and in any case the files are already on my server. So there is no rsync, fxp, ssh and I can't really install anything as it is obviously not my system, they would be justifiably miffed if I started installing file managers or other things onto their sites. What I have been trying to find is a utility that I can run on my server from the web, preferably php based, that will be like a file manager but a bit different. Two panels. LH-Side the local server .. pretty much like a standard FM application RH-Side ability to login via FTP to the clients system Then I can fiddle as required. The closest thing I have found is net2ftp but it doesn't have the gui interface, at the moment I simply ssh into my server power up ncftp and run that way, but something easier to use would be mucho niceness. • Software to manage "application profiles", which services are running, etc., on Windows?

  I am looking for a particular type of program. I use my computers in various "modes", like gaming, programming, just plain surfing, etc. What I'd like to find is a program that can help me manage these modes. For instance, while programming I might use SQL Server, but while gaming I don't want those services running, but perhaps I'd like Steam to run instead. Basically, the program type I'm looking for is a visual program that allow me to quickly switch modes, and when I do, the program would start and stop the necessary services and applications in order to leave one mode and enter another. I've looked at the programs related to startup management, and I haven't found one that lets me do what I want. At the moment I have batch files, but they're not very good at conveying problems or other things, I'd like a more visual program.

• Has there been a Firefox update recently?

  Trying again to ask a PROGRAMMING question because of the over-zealous closing off of what is equally a programming question before allowing the poster to clarify. The latest version of Firefox (v3.6.3) is breaking websites, mine included. I make heavy use of the Infragistic NetAdvantage controls. These, because of their heavy JavaScript reliance and occasional lack of quality control, tend to suffer through browser updates sometimes requiring a hotfix. So the question is... has there been a Firefox release recently that has either introduced a bug, tightening up of some standard, bug fix which might have broken a previous workaround (often the case) etc? I'm guessing around JavaScript but that's a guess hence the reason for asking a group of programmers...

  I have a foswiki installation for keeping ISO and other documents. I would like to create a PDF from each page. How can I create a topic template with different headers and footers for each topic template? More info: When a user creates a new topic, they can choose a template. I've made several templates for Functional and Programming specs. The functional spec and programming spec require different document numbers. I would like for the software engineers to be able to create a new topic, choose the template, then be able to generate a PDF from the wiki page, pulling the appropriate document number, and some other text into the headers and footers. I am not very familiar, and haven't been able to find any examples on doing this. Any help would be appreciated!

• How do I connect a 2008 server to a 2003 server active directory?

  Our DC is running Windows Server 2003. I've just set up Windows Server 2008 and have terminal server running on it. When setting the terminal server permissions, it was able to allow a group name that was read from the domain. In the DC the new terminal server shows up as a computer in the domain. I can also log in as a user within the domain even though that user doesn't exist locally on the new server. However, when I go to set sharing permissions on the new machine it doesn't show my domain as a location. Instead it is only looking at location "machinename" and not allowing domain to be seen or added. Is there something I'm missing? Ok, lots of errors in the event log. We have this: The winlogon notification subscriber is taking long time to handle the notification event (Logon). Followed by this: The winlogon notification subscriber took 121 second(s) to handle the notification event (Logon). Followed by: The processing of Group Policy failed because of lack of network connectivity to a domain controller. This may be a transient condition. A success message would be generated once the machine gets connected to the domain controller and Group Policy has succesfully processed. If you do not see a success message for several hours, then contact your administrator. I think this might be the same problem I'm having http://serverfault.com/questions/24420/primary-domain-controller-slow Solved. The issue was that I had changed from DHCP to static and put the wrong DNS server IP in. i.e. firewall instead of DC/DNS server.
