• OS X Headphone jack issue [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Optical Audio out stuck on on a MacBook When I plug my headphones into my iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011; OSX 10.8.1) and try to adjust the volume, the volume popup shows a greyed out speaker and there's a circle with a line through it signalling that it isn't working. I've tried the headphones with my iPhone, other iMacs etc and they're fine. This is incredibly frustrating. Other headphones don't generally work either. In Sound preferences the headphones are being listed as "Optical digital-out port" which is incorrect and would explain the problem, but doesn't help me fix it. Any ideas?

• activesync not working with forms based authentication

  I have an Exchange 2003 SP2 single backend server with an SSL cert. I was having trouble getting OMA to work so I found a MS article about making a reg hack and creating a new Exchange-OMA virtual directory. I am able to connect and access content from my mailbox by using secure mail.domainname.com/oma and using my credentials. ActiveSync was not working on a Windows mobile phone or iPhone. I found another article about using Forms Based Authenication and SSL on a single Exchange server environment and the fix was to elliminate FBA and SSL for the Exchange virtual directory. That allows ActiveSync to now work. I have very few mobile users, but they are management, so I need to make ActiveSync work but I would like to get back to using SSL. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817379 Any ideas about this setup? • How to legitimately work around ISP rate limits

  A lot of ISP rate limit the amount of e-mails that is sent from a particular IP address. What is the proper way to get around that rate limit? Our company has an iPhone application that sends many e-mails because of our large user base and many e-mails go to different ISPs that rate limit the number of messages coming from a specific IP. We do not send spam and we are a legitimate business. However, is there a better way to resolve this limitation rather than just getting a ton of IP addresses? Ideally, I wouldn't want to rely on a third party service to send mail. However, if its the only possible solution, we would consider.

• Free desktop recording / screencasting on windows

  I'm a newbie in desktop recording and screencasting. I didn't find a suitable free application to do all the things I want it to do, but I did enjoy using jing. I would expect such an application to have these features: choose the whole desktop, a region, a window to record zoom in an area, and camera move save the recorded movie to a compressed format have basic editing tools have the mouse highlighting feature (either a sonar blip or something similar) highlight window/field on the screen, any trick will do display pressed keys/key combinations (like iphone does) So the question is: Which free desktop recording/screencasting software would you recommend on windows? It doesn't have to have all those features, just tell me your favorable experiences. Please suggest tools that would do mouse/keys/areas highlight tricks. I'm open to commercial software too, but I would prefer a free one. Thank you!

• Is it possible to use Logmein to connect to a sleeping (Mac) computer on a wireless network?

  I'm using logmein to access my Mac. So I have the local logmein app running on my MacBook Pro, which is on my home wireless network. I access it either from the website (www.logmein.com) or the Logmein Ignition Apps on the iphone or ipad. My problem is that I have to set my MacBook Pro to not sleep at all when plugged in to make this a practical solution, because logmein cant seem to wake it up. I did change the settings in System Preferences to allow "Wake from Lan", but it seems like this won't work with a a Wifi connection. Am I missing anything? Assuming I'm not, is it bad for my computer to basically leave it running and not asleep most of the time?

• Google Accounts

  Hi all, I need to setup a bunch of accounts (~50) with Google which will later be hooked up to Analytics and the Webmaster tools and I will access them via their APIs. The problem is that Google will stop me from making accounts at a certain point because it thinks I'm spamming it. I've tried bypassing the issue by proxying through Tor, but that didn't work (I suspect the Tor nodes are already abused and blacklisted). I also drove around town with my iPhone hopping towers trying to setup accounts. Also didn't work. Phone verification also doesn't work because my phone is already linked to too many accounts... So, I figure it's time to ask. How can I continue to setup Google accounts (NOT GMail...) without being considered a spammer? If there's a service from Google to whitelist my IP, even for a fee, I would be glad to sign up for it. Any suggestions will be appreciated!

• How to convert series of MP3 to a M4B in a batch

  Hello. I have a batch of MP3 based books. Some of them divide into files according to book's own structure: chapters and so on. Some of them was just divided into equally lengthened parts. So. I've bought an iPhone, and I want to convert them all to M4B format. How could I convert them in a batch? I mean how cold I set up a process once, for each book, and then, after couple of weeks, receive totally converted library. The only able program for such conversion I've found was Audiobook Builder for a Mac. But it is pretty slow and do not support batching in principle. Solutions for any platform, please.

  Hi a friend of mine is asking about the request which can for example be found here: http://www.geoidee.ch/geodata/geoserver-2.0.0/logs/2010_11_23.request.log His original message: On a couple of hundred web sites worldwide, one of the 50 most popular "File not found" error 404 is caused by the following request: "GET http://66.196.81.202/error/vote HTTP/1.0" It originates from a user agent that purports to be an iPhone. The two requests that hit my servers appeared to originate near Frankfort, Germany. The IP address in the request is part of Yahoo although I doubt that Yahoo had any intentional part. fe1.buzz.vip.re1.yahoo.com The HTTP request has a host header 66.196.81.202 and a X-Forwarded-For of 96.6.99.16 and my IP address I expected to be able to do a Google search and find some kind of security bulletin on it, but I found nothing. • Tips on Managing Podcast Subscriptions

  I listen to a silly number of technical podcasts. I listen to enough of them that it is literally impossible to keep up. I nearly gave up and started dropping feeds from my subscription list when I heard Craig Shoemaker talk about his Polymorphic Podcast fast feed. The idea is he provides the same content at a higher speed so you can listen to his complete show in 3/4th the time. I tried it out with his recent jQuery Secrets with Dave Ward interview and I was shocked with the feed quality. It was a super clear, understandable conversation which only took a fraction of the time commitment. I experimented a bit and played the normal recording at 2x speed on my iPhone and the quality was once again just fine. But now I'm saving half of the time. I'm curious as to how you might manage your podcast subscriptions. Can you offer any tips or advice on how to get the best bang for your buck when it comes to technical podcast listening?

• Mac Mini monitor on the move – can I use VNC or a portable monitor?

  I have been investigating the possibility of using my PC to control my soon to arrive Mac Mini when on the move. I can't afford and hope you don't give me answers suggesting buying a MacBook. My Mac Mini is the high end type. Now I have seen that the only viable option seems to be VNC. But how does this work if I am not on a network? Does VNC work with an ad-hoc network? Can a PC be connected to a Mac on such a network? Can this network be configured once at home and then be available on startup on the move? If I have an iPhone, can I use it as my wifi? But then, how would I start the Mac Mini to make the connection, since it wouldn't have a screen on the move? Finally, are there any small portable screens one can carry in a bag?

• Webkit based browsers on Mac refuse to load certain websites or resources, other browsers work fine from the same machine

  OK, this one has really been puzzling me. Certain websites (such as instapaper.com ) or certain resources (such as the CSS and images for icanhazcheezeburger.com sites) refuse to load at all in Safari or Chrome on any of my Mac machines. Rebooting the machine doesn't fix it. If I use another browser, such as Firefox or a browser on my iPhone or in my Windows virtual machine, the pages load just fine. When the whole page errors out, Safari displays an error: "WebKit encountered an internal error" WebKitErrorDomain:300 This is all from within my home network. Any ideas what could possibly be causing such bizarre behavior?

• Which smartphone OS would you choose for your users ?

  While we currently only use windows mobile smartphone, my boss seems less and less reluctant to try and choose a new kind of OS for our users corporate phones. For some reasons, we can't use a Blackberry Enterprise Server, so i guess our only choice is between Iphone OS and Android (or Blackberry without BES ? I don't really know if this works fine) We need activesync capable smartphones of course, and activesync security policies must be available (pin when using your phone for example). Centralized Phone management would be nice too :D Any ideas on what should be the best smartphone to choose for our users ?

• vim default save is no file type? default setting advisable?

  I just came across a problem that I seemed to have found a solution, but was a little surprised by the issue. In gVim, when I save a new document (new from "within" gVim), ala :w afile I realized it saves with I guess no file format, and thus is not visible in iPhone's PlainText app. Solution seems to be, save using :w afile.txt then the problem seems solved. Is this a good way to solve it? Should I change a default somewhere, either in Windows or _gvimrc file? I may consider doing some TeX'ing in vim at some point, so perhaps a default that allows for overriding in saving, and doesn't force txt when opening "any of all" documents.

• Local Live Quicktime Video Broadcast, latency?

  I'm looking into the feasibility of using a local server to distribute live video of a conference to delegates in the same room. They would still hear the live audio coming from the speaker, so only the video would be streamed. I was considering a Darwin Steaming Server (a lot of iPhone users to support) and encoding with H.264. My main concern is latency across the network. Even with everything running locally, would there be lip sync issues between the live audio and the 'live' video stream? It feels like there will be problems given the encoding, broadcasting, decoding to be completed, but I've never done any like this before so thought I would check. Thanks

• Autocorrect for "fat fingers" - MS Word

  I'm wondering if anyone knows of a plug-in for MS Word which can handle key-presses of surrounding keys when typing at speed (rather like iPhone or Android autocorrect)? My use case is in transcribing interviews where I need to type quickly (even with the playback at half speed) - but I don't do this often enough to become a proficient touch typist. I will also be paying close attention to the text produced in subsequent analysis so I have a reasonable expectation that I'll catch any "hilarious" autocorrect errors. Any pointers to plug-ins which work at either a system level or within MS Word would be great. Even in an open source word processor at a pinch, though I'd miss the MS Word environment and my macros. • VPN and Bonjour conflicting

  Does anyone know why a VPN connection might interfere with Apple's Bonjour? I've noticed that my Mac and various iDevices have trouble finding each other on my local network, when I have VPN connections open. Things like Home Sharing and Wi-Fi Sync work some of the time, but sometimes fail to find the other device. The VPN connections are made using IPSecuritas, which is a GUI around raccoon. I have the local "endpoint mode" set to Host. Apple mentions that Home Sharing may conflict with VPNs, but they don't specify why, or how to fix it. I'm using a Mac with OS 10.7.3 and IPSecuritas to connect to the VPN, an iPhone, and an iPad.

• Hardware needs for video conversion server

  I would need to build a Linux server that will have as its main task to perform the video conversion. For video conversion, the most likely I will use FFMpeg tool. Question: Can anyone tell me if for improving this automated video conversion a video card will improve the process or not? The idea is that I will get movies at a very high quality that I will need to be converted in formats available for different devices (iPhone, iPad, etc.). That conversion will be performed through a CLI (command line interface). • How to rotate log files when running pyapns and twistd

  I use pyapns (Iphone push server) which in turn uses twisted (twistd daemon). twistd daemon produces twistd.log files. It rotates them to twistd.log.1, twistd.log.2 and so on when twistd.log reaches 1MB but it doesn't use logrotate so I guess it's built in. The problem is that this continues forever and that old log files are never deleted. This eventually fills my disk. I've tried to use logrotate or similar to rotate the logs, but then I would need to run logrotate very very often since I need to rotate BEFORE twistd.log reaches 1MB. This could happen within a second for all I know depending on how much log is produced. So how could I logrotate without hacking pyapns/twistd scripts?

  For my home network (with internet provided from a cable modem) I would like to setup a secure wireless access point that I use for all of my personal connections (home PC, iPhone, Xbox, etc) and also another public access point that friends and folks in the neighborhood may connect to (for good karma). I want to ensure that my private traffic cannot be accessed from users of the public access point. I currently have one router that is running the Tomato firmware that I use with WPA security. • Mobile Phone Browser Emulators/Simulators

  I work in QA in a .NET shop and recently part of my testing process has started to involve testing our company website on mobile devices. At least one of our techs uses an HTC Desire. After tons of googling I still can't find a good online emulator for testing websites on different types of mobile devices. Is anyone aware of a website that I can test across multiple mobile platforms? Or even an online HTC or Blackberry browser emulator? I've found an iphone/opera mini simulator, but that's about it. Also, I realize there are a lot of SDK's that include emulators, but I'd rather not have to set up an entire SDK just to use an emulator.

  When forwarding an email in Outlook (I have 2007), the header of the previous email shows. Sometimes it may show as follows: From: Joe Shmoe Sent: Saturday, June 12, 2010 10:01 PM To: Roee Adler Subject: Following our previous conversation Other times it will include the actual email address of the sender of the previous mail: From: Sponge Bob [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, June 12, 2010 2:26 PM To: Roee Adler Subject: Sponges and other stuff How do I force every forwarded email to include the mail address? When forwarding from my iPhone it constantly keeps the address just the way I want it, but from Outlook it seems to depend on whether the sender is a contact of mine or not. The reason I need this is for 37signals' Highrise CRM system.
