  • Entity Framework v4 examples and tutorials of conceptual model mapping

    In an application I'm writing I have a fairly complicated Database model. I'd like to use EF4 to map this to a whole lot nicer conceptual model. However all the tutorials I've read are with samples of 2 or 3 tables which all map 1 on 1 to the conceptual model. I'd like to learn how to correctly map the database model to a different conceptual model using VS 2010. However I can't find any good tutorials or (preferabally) instruction video's. Somebody got any tips, links or even books?

  • PIL saves image colour wrong

    I have an image. I want to resize it using PIL, but it come out like this. Even without a resize it still messes up the colour.   • Convert data retrieved from MySQL database into JSON object using Python/Django

    I have a MySQL database called People which contains the following schema <id,name,foodchoice1,foodchoice2>. The database contains a list of people and the two choices of food they wish to have at a party (for example). I want to create some kind of Python web-service that will output a JSON object. An example of output should be like: { "guestlist": [ {"id":1,"name":"Bob","choice1":"chicken","choice2":"pasta"},{"id":2,"name":"Alice","choice1":"pasta","choice2":"chicken"} ], "partyname": "My awesome party", "day": "1", "month": "June", "2010": "null" } Basically every guest is stored into a dictionary 'guestlist' along with their choices of food. At the end of the JSON object is just some additional information that only needs to be mentioned once. The question that I have is regarding the method that I need to utilize to grab the data from my database, and create the JSON object. Do I need to use a standard Model/View structure of Django or can I get away with something that is much simpler since what I need to do is really simple?

  • Custom Build Step Paths Between x86 and x64 in Visual Studio

    For reference, I'm using Visual Studio 2010. I have a custom build step defined as follows: if exist "$(TargetDir)"server.dll copy "$(TargetDir)"server.dll "c:\program files (x86)\myapp\server.dll" This works great on my desktop, which is running 64-bit Windows. However, when I build on my laptop, c:\Program Files (x86)\ doesn't exist because it's running 32-bit Windows. I'd like to put in something that will work between both editions of Windows, since the project files are under version control and it's a real pain to change the paths every time I work on my laptop. If this were a *nix environment I'd just create a symlink and be done with it. Any ideas?

    I've got a bit of fettish for language design and I'm currently playing around with my own hobby language. (http://rogeralsing.com/2010/04/14/playing-with-plastic/) One thing that really makes my mind bleed is "generators" and the "yield" keyword. I know C# uses AST transformation to transform enumerator methods into statemachines. But how does it work in other languages? Is there any way to get generator support in a language w/o AST transformation? e.g. Does languages like Python or Ruby resort to AST transformations to solve this to? (The question is how generators are implemented under the hood in different languages, not how to write a generator in one of them)

  • How to deploy and register a VSPackage supporting multiple versions of Visual Studio (2005, 2008, 20

    I have an open source VSPackage that I would like to release with support for Visual Studio 2005, Visual Studio 2008, and Visual Studio 2010. I'm trying to figure out how to create the installer and how to perform the package registration with each edition of Visual Studio. The deployment research I've done indicates my best bet for an installer is a VSIX inside an MSI. The registration research I've done is a lot less clear. VSPackage registration seems to differ for every edition (VS2005 uses regpkg, VS2008 uses pkgdef, VS2010 uses VSIX). Can anyone share their experiences and/or point me towards any information about the best approach for targeting multiple versions of Visual Studio? I'm looking for the easiest implementation and preferably keeping it in a single installer if reasonably feasible. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Is WPF a good choice for developing line of business user interfaces?

    We're debating whether our future Windows UI development should be WinForms or WPF. How have some of you made this decision? Most of our applications are LOB applications, and I'm not sure I see a clear and overwhelming benefit to WPF for these types of applications. However, my knowledge of WPF is limited. I'm also a little concerned that WPF will be in vogue for another couple years and then Microsoft will get tired of it and push something else on us. I guess one argument against this is the fact that Visual Studio 2010 is a WPF application. Thanks.

    Hi, In my company we want to use Scrum lifecycle, we are using Team System 2010. Team System is great to manage projects developpment and Scrum lifecycle. However we are looking for a solution in order to take care of customers requirements. A tool which give the ability to customer to send us their requests so we can plan it for next sprint.     Hi There! I have an issue with expiration date in emails. For example, I have a subscription which expires on 1st FEB 2010 and I am purchasing new subscription (renewing my role). When order is complete Ubercart CA (Condition actions) sends an email about role renewal and new expiration date ([role-expiration-short]). But the message contains wrong expiration date I've noticed that on each order email contains N-1 expiration, where N - current purchase. This is email message: [order-first-name] [order-last-name], Thanks to your order, [order-link], at [store-name] you have renewed the role, [role-name]. It is now set to expire on [role-expiration-short] <- ISSUE IS HERE. Thanks again, [store-name] [site-slogan] Any ideas? Thanks!

I can understand how this other sample: "Date literals" works.   • Multiple TinyMCE editors, but only one toolbar?

    Hello there. I've looked around the forum, but cannot seem to find a definite answer to this problem... I'm using jQuery and TinyMCE on our website. I've gone through the docs of TinyMCE, but am still getting lost I'm afraid. We're doing an interface that requires edit-in-place in multiple places in the page. The only thing is, each of these will have all the editing choices from TinyMCE in one toolbar at the top. So, to recap it, it's multiple editors (that each have no toolbars of their own, just a place to edit or select the text) and only one toolbar at the top of the page to control whichever textbox is active at the time. How could this be achieved? Is it even possible? Any help, any push in the right direction, any hints/tips/knowledge at all on this problem would be a great, great help. Thanks, James

  • File Access problems with SLES 10 SP2 OES2 SP1

    We have identified a couple of repeatable, demonstrable scenarios with unexplained rejected folder access on our servers for Mac users. Hopefully, this can be presented to Novell for a solution. What we did to demonstrate scenario 1; 1. setup a PC and Mac side-by-side 2. login to our server and open up to a central location on both Mac and PC 3. on the PC in that central location create a folder 4. on the Mac in that central location drag the created folder to the Mac desktop, this should work fine, no problem 5. on the PC rename that folder 6. on the Mac drag a file to that renamed folder, this should error with the following message; a. You cannot copy some of these items to the destination because their names are too long for the destination. Do you want to skip copying these items and continue copying the other items? b. Select skip, response is the filename is copied to the location with zero or small byte size. Try opening it and you get file is corrupted error message. What we did to demonstrate scenario 2; 1. setup a PC and Mac side-by-side 2. login to our server and open up to a central location on both Mac and PC 3. on the PC in that central location create a folder then create a subfolder 4. copy some content into the subfolder 5. on the Mac in that central location drag the created top level folder to the Mac desktop, this should work fine, no problem 6. on the PC rename that subfolder 7. on the Mac drag that top level folder to the Mac desktop, this should error on the Mac with the following; a. The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for b. The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for 8. on the Mac, if you open that subfolder you can see the file copied in step 4 above but, you can not open that file, you get the following message if you try; a. There was an error opening this document. You do not have permission to open this file. 9. on the PC drag some content into the top level folder 10. on the Mac you can open that file directly from the server or copy it locally, no problem, however-the subfolder is still corrupted or locked, whichever 11. on the PC rename the top level folder 12. on the Mac that same file just opened in step 10 above is now not accessible, get the following message; a. The document could not be opened. I have observed some variances in the above. For instance, a change on the PC side may take a moment before you can observer or act on the Mac side - kind of like the server is slow to respond. Also, the error message may vary. However, the key is once a folder, or subfolder, gets renamed by a PC, Mac problems commence. The solution is to create a new folder from a PC and copy the contents of the corrupted folder to the new folder and not rename the folder name. This has to be done on a PC because the corrupted folder is not accessible by a Mac user. Another problem that dovetails with the above is that we know certain characters are not allowed for PC folder or filenames. If a Mac user creates a folder with a slash in the file name, from the PC the user does not see that slash in the name. As soon as the PC user copies a file to that folder, the Mac user is locked from that folder. Will get the following error message; - Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. - (Error code - 50) In addition to the above mentioned character issue with folders, the problem is more evil with filenames. If, for example, you create a file with a slash in the filename on a Mac and copy it to the server you will get the following error message; - You cannot copy some of these items to the destination because their names are too long for the destination. Do you want to skip copying these items and continue copying the other items? Select either Stop or Skip buttons. It does not matter which button is selected. The file name gets copied to the destination location at a reduced size. Depending on the file type, the icon associated with the file may or may not be present. Furthermore, if you open that file on the server you will get the following message; - Couldnt open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that doesnt recognize. From the users perspective, if they are not observant of the icon or file size, they may disregard the error message and think their file has copied as intended. Only later do they discover the file is corrupt if they open that file. I want to make a note on this problem. It is the PC causing the issue. You can change folder and file names all day on a MAC and you don't have a problem as long as a character is not the issue. Once you change the file name or folder name from a PC the entire folder structure from that level down is corrupted. But it has to be resolved from a PC by creating a new folder and copying the contents to the new folder like stated above. Is something not configured correctly?   • C# Drawing Oracle Spatial Geometries

    I need to create a simple app which can display geometries from Oracle Spatial in C#. These geometries are exported from AutoCAD Map 3D 2010 to Oracle Spatial. I need to pan, zoom, manage layers of these objects, events (like right click to popup a contextual menu, potentially different for every object), creating/deleting points (maybe also other polygons): a sort of simple AutoCAD interface. Should I look for an AutoCAD OEM license? Is there a drawing framework which can handle this or do I need to create my own?

    I am not an expert web-dev so please bear with me here. I would like to display a banner style header for a page with the top part taken up by an image that is 275x116 and then a horizontal menu bar (styled using ul items) appearing at 70% from the top of the banner. How would I set this up so that the banner appears underneath my navigation? However, if I add any gems to my environment.rb: config.gem "authlogic" And run the same generator, I get the following: /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rails-2.3.5/lib/rails/gem_dependency.rb:119:Warning: Gem::Dependency#version_requirements is deprecated and will be removed on or after August 2010. The warning just recently appeared (I think), but I would like to fix it if possible. Any hints or similar experiences? Thanks.

    Lets say I have this class (simplified): class Tag (...): children = models.ManyToManyField(null=True, symmetrical=False) Now I already implemented the functions get_parents, get_all_ancestors. Is there a nice pythonic way to just the top level tags? If I had designed my Tags differently (to point to the parents instead) I would just make get_all_parents().filter(children=null). My first thought is to create a new function that will go recursively through all parents and save those that has none. But is there a possibility with filters or Query-objects to do the same (with fewer lines of code)? Thanks for your help. [edit] When it is finished, it should be a hierarchical tagging system. Each tag can have children, parents, but only the children are saved. I want to get all the top level tags, that point through many children / childrens children to my tag.

    I used to do all my linux profiling with gprof. However, with my multi threaded app, it's output appears to be inconsistent. Now, I dug this up http://sam.zoy.org/writings/programming/gprof.html howver, it's from a long time ago -- and in my gprof output, it appears my gprof is listing functions used by non-main threads. So, my questions are: 1) in 2010, can I easily use gprof to profile multi threaded linux c++ apps? (ubuntu 9.10) 2) what other tools should I look into for profiling? thanks!

I tried a sample, dummy query (running it from DevServerA): SELECT TOP 1 * FROM DevServerB\2K5.master.sys.tables And I get the error: Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 2 Incorrect syntax near '\.'. However, I know my syntax is almost correct, since the other way around works (running this query from DevServerB\2K5): SELECT TOP 1 * FROM DevServerA.master.sys.tables Please help me figure out how to reference DevServerB\2K5 from DevServerA.   • Extremely slow insert from Delphi to Remote MySQL Database

    Having a major hair-pulling issue with extremely slow inserts from Delphi 2010 to a remote MySQL 5.09 server. So far, I have tried: ADO using MySQL ODBC Driver Zeoslib v7 Alpha I have used batching and direct insert with ADO (using table access), and with Zeos I have used SQL insertion with a Query, then used Table direct mode and also cached updates Table mode using applyupdates and commit. Both technologies I have tried with compression on and off. So far I have seen a pretty much the same across the board 7.5 records per second!!! Now, I would from this point assume that the remote server is just slow, but the MySQL Workbench is amazingly fast, and the Migration toolkit managed the initial migration very quickly (to be honest, I don't recall how quickly - which kind of means that it was quick) I'm just about to try the MyDAC components as we already use SDAC (wish there was a multi-buy discount or that we'd chosen UniDAC instead now!) Any ideas?

    Hi All, I am trying out the VS 2010 testing tools for the first time. And I tried recording a web performance test and my actions had a file download implemented as in the KB article here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812406 by streaming chunks of 10000 bytes. However my test is failing at the download saying "The response stream has been closed". Please help me understand why it is happening this way also any suggestions how you would test such a file download. My main aim was to see how the download was performing for a load test with Intercontinental 350kbps connection on files of about 30-50 MB. Thanks.
