  I am getting the following warnings on the Event Log for a Asp.Net WebSite running on IIS 7. Exception information: Exception type: HttpException Exception message: Server cannot append header after HTTP headers have been sent. at System.Web.Hosting.ISAPIWorkerRequest.SendUnknownResponseHeader(String name, String value) at System.Web.HttpResponse.WriteHeaders() at System.Web.HttpResponse.Flush(Boolean finalFlush) at System.Web.HttpRuntime.FinishRequest(HttpWorkerRequest wr, HttpContext context, Exception e) I tried to debug the WebSite but it just does not show in debugger. The web page which has got this issue contains the following. Its a content page with a Master page. It has a grid inside an UpdatePanel which is Triggered by a Timer. On the specified time grid data is refreshed. Everytime this happens we see a new warning in the EventLog. What is the best way to go about this issue?

• Authenticate into asp.net app from a winforms app

  Hi there! We have 2 applications - 1 windows and 1 web (asp.net). Winforms runs on the customer's machine where as the website is hosted within our company. The winforms has a link which opens the web app in a browser window. The web app is secured so the login page is shown. The username and password is the same as the windows app login. How do I auto-login to the web app so the user will not see the login screen? The web app uses FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie to create an encrypted cookie on the user's machine. How do I create the same from the winforms app so the user will not see the login screen? Thanks.

• SQL Azure Reporting Limited CTP Arrived

  It’s about 3 months later when I registered the SQL Azure Reporting CTP on the Microsoft Connect after TechED 2010 China. Today when I checked my mailbox I found that the SQL Azure team had just accepted my request and sent the activation code over to me. So let’s have a look on the new SQL Azure Reporting.   Concept The SQL Azure Reporting provides cloud-based reporting as a service, built on SQL Server Reporting Services and SQL Azure technologies. Cloud-based reporting solutions such as SQL Azure Reporting provide many benefits, including rapid provisioning, cost-effective scalability, high availability, and reduced management overhead for report servers; and secure access, viewing, and management of reports. By using the SQL Azure Reporting service, we can do: Embed the Visual Studio Report Viewer ADO.NET Ajax control or Windows Form control to view the reports deployed on SQL Azure Reporting Service in our web or desktop application. Leverage the SQL Azure Reporting SOAP API to manage and retrieve the report content from any kinds of application. Use the SQL Azure Reporting Service Portal to navigate and view the reports deployed on the cloud. Since the SQL Azure Reporting was built based on the SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Service, we can use any tools we are familiar with, such as the SQL Server Integration Studio, Visual Studio Report Viewer. The SQL Azure Reporting Service runs as a remote SQL Server Reporting Service just on the cloud rather than on a server besides us.   Establish a New SQL Azure Reporting Let’s move to the windows azure deveploer portal and click the Reporting item from the left side navigation bar. If you don’t have the activation code you can click the Sign Up button to send a requirement to the Microsoft Connect. Since I already recieved the received code mail I clicked the Provision button. Then after agree the terms of the service I will select the subscription for where my SQL Azure Reporting CTP should be provisioned. In this case I selected my free Windows Azure Pass subscription. Then the final step, paste the activation code and enter the password of our SQL Azure Reporting Service. The user name of the SQL Azure Reporting will be generated by SQL Azure automatically. After a while the new SQL Azure Reporting Server will be shown on our developer portal. The Reporting Service URL and the user name will be shown as well. We can reset the password from the toolbar button.   Deploy Report to SQL Azure Reporting If you are familiar with SQL Server Reporting Service you will find this part will be very similar with what you know and what you did before. Firstly we open the SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio and create a new Report Server Project. Then we will create a shared data source where the report data will be retrieved from. This data source can be SQL Azure but we can use local SQL Server or other database if it opens the port up. In this case we use a SQL Azure database located in the same data center of our reporting service. In the Credentials tab page we entered the user name and password to this SQL Azure database. The SQL Azure Reporting CTP only available at the North US Data Center now so that the related SQL Server and hosted service might be better to select the same data center to avoid the external data transfer fee. Then we create a very simple report, just retrieve all records from a table named Members and have a table in the report to list them. In the data source selection step we choose the shared data source we created before, then enter the T-SQL to select all records from the Member table, then put all fields into the table columns. The report will be like this as following In order to deploy the report onto the SQL Azure Reporting Service we need to update the project property. Right click the project node from the solution explorer and select the property item. In the Target Server URL item we will specify the reporting server URL of our SQL Azure Reporting. We can go back to the developer portal and select the reporting node from the left side, then copy the Web Service URL and paste here. But notice that we need to append “/reportserver” after pasted. Then just click the Deploy menu item in the context menu of the project, the Visual Studio will compile the report and then upload to the reporting service accordingly. In this step we will be prompted to input the user name and password of our SQL Azure Reporting Service. We can get the user name from the developer portal, just next to the Web Service URL in the SQL Azure Reporting page. And the password is the one we specified when created the reporting service. After about one minute the report will be deployed succeed.   View the Report in Browser SQL Azure Reporting allows us to view the reports which deployed on the cloud from a standard browser. We copied the Web Service URL from the reporting service main page and appended “/reportserver” in HTTPS protocol then we will have the SQL Azure Reporting Service login page. After entered the user name and password of the SQL Azure Reporting Service we can see the directories and reports listed. Click the report will launch the Report Viewer to render the report.   View Report in a Web Role with the Report Viewer The ASP.NET and Windows Form Report Viewer works well with the SQL Azure Reporting Service as well. We can create a ASP.NET Web Role and added the Report Viewer control in the default page. What we need to change to the report viewer are Change the Processing Mode to Remote. Specify the Report Server URL under the Server Remote category to the URL of the SQL Azure Reporting Web Service URL with “/reportserver” appended. Specify the Report Path to the report which we want to display. The report name should NOT include the extension name. For example my report was in the SqlAzureReportingTest project and named MemberList.rdl then the report path should be /SqlAzureReportingTest/MemberList. And the next one is to specify the SQL Azure Reporting Credentials. Likes other features in Windows Azure, the SQL Azure Reporting is very similar with the SQL Server Reporting. As you can see in this post we can use the existing and familiar tools to build and deploy the reports and display them on a website. But the SQL Azure Reporting is just in the CTP stage which means It is free. There’s no support for it. Only available at the North US Data Center. • c# Network Programming - HTTPWebRequest Scraping

  Hi, I am building a web scraping application. It should scrape a complex web site with concurrent HttpWebRequests from a single host to a single target web server. The application should run on Windows server 2008. One single HttpWebRequest for data could take from 1 minute to 4 minutes to complete (because of long running db operations) I should have at least 100 parallel requests to the target web server, but i have noticed that when i use more then 2-3 long-running requests i have big performance issues (request timeouts/hanging). How many concurrent requests can i have in this scenario from a single host to a single target web server? can i use Thread Pools in the application to run parallel HttpWebRequests to the server? will i have any issues with the default outbound HTTP connection/requests limits? what about Request timeouts when i reach outbound connection limits? what would be the best setup for my scenario? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

  I have a web application that I need to manually obtain a Freemarker template - the template is obtained via a class in a library project, but the actual tpl file is contained in the web application classpath. So, there are 2 projects, one 'taac-backend-api' and another 'taac-web'; taac-backend-api has the code to grab the template, and process it, but taac-web is where the template is stores (specifically in: WEB-INF/classes/email/vendor.tpl) - I have tried everything from using springs classpath resource to using Freemarkers setClassForTemplateLoading method. I assume this would work: freemarkerConfiguration = new Configuration(); freemarkerConfiguration.setClassForTemplateLoading(this.getClass(), ""); Template freemarkerTemplate = freemarkerConfiguration.getTemplate("/email/vendor.tpl"); yet, I always get a FileNotFoundException. Can someone explain the best way to obtain a template from the classpath? Thanks.

  Q: What’s your current role and what career path brought you here? J.O.: I'm currently a partner and one of the founding team members at Altimeter Group.  I'm currently the Research Director, as well as wear the hat of Industry Analyst. Prior to joining Altimeter, I was an Industry Analyst at Forrester covering Social Computing, and before that, deployed and managed the social media program at Hitachi Data Systems in Santa Clara.  Around that time, I started a career blog called Web Strategy which focused on how companies were using the web to connect with customers --and never looked back. Q: As an industry analyst, what are you focused on these days? J.O.: There are three trends that I'm focused my research on at this time:  1) The Dynamic Customer Journey:  Individuals (both b2c and b2b) are given so many options in their sources of data, channels to choose from and screens to consume them on that we've found that at each given touchpoint there are 75 potential permutations.  Companies that can map this, then deliver information to individuals when they need it will have a competitive advantage and we want to find out who's doing this.  2) One of the sub themes that supports this trend is Social Performance.  Yesterday's social web was disparate engagement of humans, but the next phase will be data driven, and soon new technologies will emerge to help all those that are consuming, publishing, and engaging on the social web to be more efficient with their time through forms of automation.  As you might expect, this comes with upsides and downsides.  3) The Sentient World is our research theme that looks out the furthest as the world around us (even inanimate objects) become 'self aware' and are able to talk back to us via digital devices and beyond.  Big data, internet of things, mobile devices will all be this next set. Q: People cite that the line between work and life is getting more and more blurred. Do you see your personal life influencing your professional work? J.O.: The lines between our work and personal lives are dissolving, and this leads to a greater upside of being always connected and have deeper relationships with those that are not.  It also means a downside of society expectations that we're always around and available for colleagues, customers, and beyond.  In the future, a balance will be sought as we seek to achieve the goals of family, friends, work, and our own personal desires.  All of this is being ironically written at 430 am on a Sunday am.  Q: How can people keep up with what you’re working on? • Best practices in ASP.Net code behind pages.

  Hi, I am an experienced developer but I am new to web application development. Now I am in charge of developing a new web application and I could really use some input from experienced web developers out there. I'd like to understand exactly what experienced web developers do in the code-behind pages. At first I thought it was best to have a rule that all the database access and business logic should be performed in classes external to the code-behind pages. My thought was that only logic necessary for the web form would be performed in the code-behind. I still think that all the business logic should be performed in other classes but I'm beginning to think it would be alright if the code-behind had access to the database to query it directly rather than having to call other classes to receive a dataset or collection back. Any input would be appreciated.

• Spring Security - is Role and ACL security overkill?

  I have a 3 tier application that requires security authorizations be placed on various domain objects. Whether I use Spring's ACL implementation or roll my own, it seems to me that ACL based security can only be used to authorize (service) methods and cannot be used to authorize URL or web service invocations. I think this because how could a web service call check the ACL before it has hydrated the XML payload? Also, all the examples for web access security in the Spring documentation are securing URL's based on Role. Is it typical to use Spring's roles to secure web presentation and web service calls, while at the same time using ACL's to secure the business methods? Is this overkill?

• 3 Ways to Make Steam Even Faster

  Have you ever noticed how slow Steam’s built-in web browser can be? Do you struggle with slow download speeds? Or is Steam just slow in general? These tips will help you speed it up. Steam isn’t a game itself, so there are no 3D settings to change to achieve maximum performance. But there are some things you can do to speed it up dramatically. Speed Up the Steam Web Browser Steam’s built-in web browser — used in both the Steam store and in Steam’s in-game overlay to provide a web browser you can quickly use within games – can be frustratingly slow on many systems. Rather than the typical speed we’ve come to expect from Chrome, Firefox, or even Internet Explorer, Steam seems to struggle. When you click a link or go to a new page, there’s a noticeable delay before the new page appears — something that doesn’t happen in desktop browsers. Many people seem to have made peace with this slowness, accepting that Steam’s built-in browser is just bad. However, there’s a trick that will eliminate this delay on many systems and make the Steam web browser fast. This problem seems to arise from an incompatibility with the Automatically Detect Proxy Settings option, which is enabled by default on Windows. This is a compatibility option that very few people should actually need, so it’s safe to disable it. To disable this option, open the Internet Options dialog — press the Windows key to access the Start menu or Start screen, type Internet Options, and click the Internet Options shortcut. Select the Connections tab in the Internet Options window and click the LAN settings button. Uncheck the Automatically detect settings option here, then click OK to save your settings. If you experienced a significant delay every time a web page loaded in Steam’s web browser, it should now be gone. In the unlikely event that you encounter some sort of problem with your network connection, you could always re-enable this option. Increase Steam’s Game Download Speed Steam attempts to automatically select the nearest download server to your location. However, it may not always select the ideal download server. Or, in the case of high-traffic events like big seasonal sales and huge game launches, you may benefit from selecting a less-congested server. To do this, open Steam’s settings by clicking the Steam menu in Steam and selecting Settings. Click over to the Downloads tab and select the closest download server from the Download Region box. You should also ensure that Steam’s download bandwidth isn’t limited from here. You may want to restart Steam and see if your download speeds improve after changing this setting. In some cases, the closest server might not be the fastest. One a bit farther away could be faster if your local server is more congested, for example. Steam once provided information about content server load, which allowed you to select a regional server that wasn’t under high-load, but this information no longer seems to be available. Steam still provides a page that shows you the amount of download activity happening in different regions, including statistics about the difference in download speeds in different US states, but this information isn’t as useful. Accelerate Steam and Your Games One way to speed up all your games — and Steam itself —  is by getting a solid-state drive and installing Steam to it. Steam allows you to easily move your Steam folder — at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam by default — to another hard drive. Just move it like you would any other folder. You can then launch the Steam.exe program as if you had never moved Steam’s files. Steam also allows you to configure multiple game library folders. This means that you can set up a Steam library folder on a solid-state drive and one on your larger magnetic hard drive. Install your most frequently played games to the solid-state drive for maximum speed and your less frequently played ones to the slower magnetic hard drive to save SSD space. To set up additional library folders, open Steam’s Settings window and click the Downloads tab. You’ll find the Steam Library Folders option here. Click the Add Library Folder button and create a new game library on another hard drive. When you install a game in Steam, you’ll be asked which library folder you want to install it to. With the proxy compatibility option disabled, the correct download server chosen, and Steam installed to a fast SSD, it should be a speed demon. • Referencing assemblies created with ILMerge in Visual Studio projects

  I have a solution in Visual Studio with 5 projects. They are: Foo.Core: Core functionality Foo.Api: Generated code built on top of core Foo.Web: Web-specific extensions Foo.Web.Mvc: MVC-specific extensions Newtonsoft.Json: 3rd party library I want to use ILMerge to merge Foo.Core, Foo.Api and Newtonsoft.Json into a single assembly, called Foo. That's the easy part. The problem I'm running into is that Foo.Web and Foo.Web.Mvc both need to reference all three of the merged assemblies. If I reference the original assemblies, they will have invalid references after I do the ILMerge. If I reference the ILMerged assembly, I have to reference a debug assembly and then change it before I package everything up, which doesn't seem ideal. I've tried creating a project called Foo, which references the 3 merged assemblies and replaces its own output with the ILmerged assembly, but that doesn't seem to work at all. Is there a reliable way to do this?

• Recommended Visual Studio config for referencing an assembly created with ILMerge

  I have a solution in Visual Studio with 5 projects. They are: Foo.Core: Core functionality Foo.Api: Generated code built on top of core Foo.Web: Web-specific extensions Foo.Web.Mvc: MVC-specific extensions Newtonsoft.Json: 3rd party library I want to use ILMerge to merge Foo.Core, Foo.Api and Newtonsoft.Json into a single assembly, called Foo. That's the easy part. The problem I'm running into is that Foo.Web and Foo.Web.Mvc both need to reference all three of the merged assemblies. If I reference the original assemblies, they will have invalid references after I do the ILMerge. If I reference the ILMerged assembly, I have to reference a debug assembly and then change it before I package everything up, which doesn't seem ideal. I've tried creating a project called Foo, which references the 3 merged assemblies and replaces its own output with the ILmerged assembly, but that doesn't seem to work at all. Is there a reliable way to do this?

  Hi I'm starting to learn symfony for php framework and I got problem with httpd.conf configuration. First, I have xampplite installed on my windows c:\xampplite\ and then I created a symfony project (as described on getting started guide) c:\xampplite\htdocs\symfonytest\ Everything works fine when I tried to access http://localhost/symfonytest/web/ (all icons and text are displayed pretty well) Now I got to configure the httpd.conf and I type like this: <VirtualHost 127.0.0.1/symfonytest> DocumentRoot "c:\xampplite\htdocs\symfonytest\web" DirectoryIndex index.php <Directory "c:\xampplite\htdocs\symfonytest\web"> AllowOverride All Allow from All </Directory> Alias /sf c:\xampplite\htdocs\symfonytest\web\sf <Directory "c:\xampplite\htdocs\symfonytest\web\sf"> AllowOverride All Allow from All </Directory> But it has no effect at all ... when I type http://127.0.0.1/symfonytest/ it still displayed directory list of my c:\xampplite\htdocs\symfonytest\ How to solve this httpd.conf problem?   I have written a java code which does following:- Main goal is to fetch emails from (inbox, spam) folders and store them in database. It fetches emails from gmail,gmx,web.de,yahoo and Hotmail. Following attributes are stored in mysql database. Slno, messagedigest, messageid, foldername, dateandtime, receiver, sender, subject, cc, size and emlfile. For gmail,gmy and web.de, I have used javamail API, because email form it can be fetched with IMAP. For yahoo and hotmail, I have used html parser and httpclient to fetch emails form spam folder and for inbox folder, I have used pop3 javamail API. I want to have proper class hierarchy which makes my code efficient and easily reusable. As of now I have designed class hierarchy as below: I am sure it can still be improved. So I would like to have different opinions on it. I have following classes and methods as of now. MainController:- Here I pass emailid, password and foldername from which emails have to be fetched. Abstract Class :-EmailProtocol Abstract Methods of it (All methods except executeParser contains method definition):- connectImap() // used by gmx,gmail and web.de email ids connectPop3() // used by hotmail and yahoo to fetch emails of inbox folder createMessageDigest // used by every email provider(gmx, gmail,web.de,yahoo,hotmail) establishDBConnection // used by every email emailAlreadyExists // used by every email which checks whether email already exists in db or not, if not then store it. storeemailproperties // used by every email to store emails properties to mysql database executeParser // nothing written in it. Overwridden and used by just hotmail and yahoo to fetch emails form spam folder. Imap extends EmailProtocol (nothing in it. But I have to have it to access methods of EmailProtocol. This is used to fetch emails from gmail,gmx and web.de) I know this is really a bad way but don't know how to do it other way. Hotmsil extends EmailProtocol Methods:- executeParser() :- This is used by just hotmail email id. fetchjunkemails() :- This is also very specific for only hotmail email id.
