• Problems in Table of Contents formatting

  Two questions about captions in Word (they are related, hence the same post): Using Word 2010 (and its inbuilt equation editor) I've got figure captions which contain equations (well, actually, they represent chemical equations, such as nitrate, for which the correct representation is NO3- where the 3 is subscript and the - is superscript, but in the same column). However, when I generate a figure list, the equation displays as NO3- (with no subscript or superscript) - Word knows it's an equation though (the Equation Tools design ribbon/tab is displayed when I click on the NO3-). I've tried changing it from Professional to Linear and similar other obvious options, but still can't get it to display correctly. File to show this problem in action: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/101867759/EqtnTest.docx - note how the (chemical) equation for nitrate is rendered correctly in the 'caption' on Page 2, but not in the ToC on page 1. I have another caption where the whole figure is included in my list of figures. When I double click on the caption in my text, the caption is highlighted (as expected), but so is the figure (this doesn't happen with any of my other figures) so I assume that the figure has been 'linked' in some way to the text - how do I remove this link?

• Tunnell network requests with Windows 7

  I've Windows 7 64bit Pro client in a private LAN behind a Netgear wgr614v7 router. I've also a remote Debian server machine outside. I'd like to tunnel all (or specified ports/protocols) over this outside server, so when I'm on the Windows machine and I request serverfault.com it would not appear from the wgr614v7 public IP but from the server. But it's not only about HTTP traffic, it's basically about everything I'd like to: other TCP ports, even UDP, etc. It must be transparent to the application, e.g. they shouldn't be aware of this. All their requests just appear as being from the server and the tunnel between them takes care about the packets. I'm aware of e.g. Putty and forwarding individual ports or using it as a socks proxy, however not many applications to support this and the support in windows itself looks non-existent to me. I might add it should be something "reasonable" easy to set up. I've heard about PPTP but I'm unsure about it's security implications (by design). Should I go for VPN? There seem to be two common solutions for Linux (OpenSwan and StrongSwan), why would I pick the one over the other? I also fear that setting up a VPN might be quite complex, OTOH maybe it's the only sane way to do the things right? Or is OpenVPN sufficient? I'm seeking for open (source) solutions, what other options to I have or which direction should I head to?

• Output current with Teensy++ 2.0 (arduino-based hardware)

  I am working on a project with a Teensy++ 2.0 for testing, eventually the goal is to use a Teensy 2.0 (info on both available here) and mount it onto a robot R/C car along with a Raspberry Pi. I have been able to use and test one of the very cheap distance sensors that use ultrasound, which requires very little current. I was trying to power a motor, I don't know exactly what kind of motor but I assume a very low-power one which is what comes with the R/C car cheapo, but nothing is happening. When I plug the motor to GROUND and +5V it runs fine, but when I use GROUND and one of the GPIO pins then nothing happens with the motor. The same GPIO pins were tested to successfully power and run the ultrasound sensor, so the board is fine. My suspicion is that the GPIO pins don't output enough current to power the motor, but my knowledge of electronics is rather scarce (I am a computer scientist, not an electrical engineer). So please forgive me if I am asking something obvious or plain stupid, but does the board not have enough power to power the motor? If so, I could try to use a second power supply that would go straight into the motor and use the GPIO as a gate to turn that power on and off; would such thing work? Is there a better design that could be used?

• External HDD connecting via USB disconnects wireless LAN connection

  Strange problem. I have this MEDION Akoya PC that has a dedicated bay to slide an external HDD sold separately. It's very handy indeed cause the slot is providing a fast USB 3 connection and power to the HDD unit, without extra cables. All works fine except this show-stopper behavior to disconnect me from the router once I slide in the unit and it powers up. The moment I connect the unit the (normally) three-four WiFi connections I see in my neighborhood disappear and my own to the router loses its signal strength (no Internet traffic is possible). After a while it throws me off that one as well, never to connect me again as long as the unit is powered. Once I disconnect the HDD the various signals come back and it automatically reconnects to my own. What takes? Are we in front of a serious design fault by MEDION here? Does the spinning of the HDD on top of the PC cause electromagnetic interference strong enough to throw off my WiFi connectivity? Is it a simple USB problem? Some kind of strange hardware conflict? Where should I look?

• Automating Access 2007 Queries (changing one criteria)

  So, I have 6 queries and I want to run them all once at the end of each month. (I know a bit about SQL but they're simply built using Access's design view). So, in the next few days, perhaps I'll run the 6 queries for May, as May just ended. I only want the data from the month that just ended, so the query has Criteria set as the name of the month (e.g., May). Now, it's not hugely time consuming to change all of these each month, but is there some way to automate this? Currently, they're all set to April and I want to change them all to May when I run them in a few days. And each month, I'd like to type the month (perhaps in a textbox in a form or somewhere else if you know a better way) just once and have it change all 6 queries, without having to manually open all 6, scroll over to the right field and change the Criteria. Note (about VBA): I have used Excel VBA so I know the basics of VBA but I don't really know anything specific to Access (other than seeing code a few times). And, others will use this who do not know anything about Access VBA. So, I think I have found a similar question/answer that could do this in VBA, but I'd rather do it some other way. If the query needs to be slightly redesigned later, probably by someone who doesn't know Access VBA at all, it'd be nice to have a solution not involving VBA if that is even possible.

  I'm using Visual Studio 2008 Team Suite and I'm unable to run tests and display the Test/Windows/Test Result Window. The result is a dialog box with the following content : "Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation". Team Explorer has been installed after Visual Studio 2008 SP1. So I have re-apllied the service pack. Searching the web I found that this error is pretty common but unfortunately, the proposed solutions does not work for me.   Recently i made two template classes,according to the book "Modern C++ design". I think these classes are useful but no one in my company agree with me,so could any one tell me if these things are useful? The first one is a parameter wrapper,it can package function paramters to a single dynamic object.It looks like TypeList in "Modern C++ design". You can use it like this: some place of your code: int i = 7; bool b = true; double d = 3.3; CParam *p1 = CreateParam(b,i); CParam *p2 = CreateParam(i,b,d); other place of your code: int i = 0; bool b = false; double d = 0.0; GetParam(p1,b,i); GetParam(p2,i,b,d); The second one is a generic callback wrapper,it has some special point compare to other wrappers: 1.This template class has a dynamic base class,which let you use a single type object represent all wrapper objects. 2.It can wrap the callback together with it's parameters,you can excute the callback sometimes later with the parameters. • Why won't my AJAX controls work? (and ajax for .net 4 not working?)

  I'm totally new to ajax. I'm using VS2005. I just downloaded .NET framework 4 and so then I downloaded ajaxcontroltoolkit.binary.net4 via [http://ajaxcontroltoolkit.codeplex.com/releases/view/43475] (as opposed to ajaxcontroltoolkit.binary.net35 for .NET 3.5), but when I try to load the ajaxcontroltoolkit.dll into my toolbox (as said in the tutorials), I get the following error msg: "'C:......\ajaxcontroltoolkit.dll' is not a microsoft .NET module." First question: Why is this happening? So I tried downloading the "Recommended" ajaxcontroltoolkit.binary.net35, and it accepted the .dll file and loaded all my controls. So, I started a new website and tried to check out a combobox, and it displays, but IE is giving the follow error msg: 'Sys.Extended.UI.PositioningMode.BottomLeft' is null or not an object.' 2nd question: Why is this happening?   I have successfully installed OpenManage on a CentOS 5.4 server and I'm able to use OpenManage through the web interface running on port 1311, but I would like to be able to expose this information through the SNMP server. I don't know SNMP particularly well so the configuration is a result of trial and error. I've tried to follow the description pointed out in the Open Manage Server Administrator User Guide. I've followed the documentation regarding SNMP configuration, but without success. • Why can I not get a WDS-originated PXE boot to progress past the first file download?

  I'm trying to work out an automated Windows install process, and thought I'd give WDS a look. After some promising initial progress, I seem to have hit a wall. I imported the boot and install WIMs, and created the capture WIM successfully. However, whenever I try to PXE boot the reference machine against the WDS server, it kinda craps out. It finds the server and downloads WDSNBP.COM successfully, and then gives the message "TFTP download failed." According to WireShark, the only communication between the WDS box and the client box is the successful TFTP request and download of boot\x86\WDSNBP.COM. No further requests are sent. The WDS log on the server shows the same thing, one successful download and no more activity. I've tried every combination of the following, with exactly zero change in behaviour: Win Server 2008R2 vs 2012 vs 2012R2 WDS virtualized on KVM, ESXi, VirtualBox, VMWare Workstation Client virtualized on KVM, ESXi, VirtualBox, VMWare Workstation Every network adaptor type offered by the virtualization platforms. "Actual" network vs isolated, virtual network. MS DHCP server vs Linux isc-dhcp-server Joined to a domain vs Stand-alone I tried changing the boot filename in DHCP to pxeboot.com instead, and it has no problem downloading that file instead, but it then crabs about Boot\BCD being corrupted. Also, with 2012, it doesnt appear that WDSNBP.com does the architecture detection, or at least does'nt report that it did. 2008 reports that it found x64, and then errors. I find myself out of things to check, and I dont see anything immediately wrong. Where do I go from here? WDS server is at 192.168.1.50, DHCP/DNS at 192.168.1.7. • Windows 7 x64 "upgrade" repair fails

  I've been running into issues with Windows Update, which I can't seem to fix. The hotfixes don't work, nor does the Windows update readyness tool, or the manual SP1 upgrade. I get various esoteric errors which nobody seems to have a fix for. Looks like some of the update cache is corrupt and digital signatures seem to be broken on some packages / Windows Update components. Long story short, I have discovered the only option is to do a repair operation on the OS, to repair everything. It's so corrupt that only a complete replacement will fix it. According to various sources (including MSKB) one can perform a repair by running an in-place upgrade. I've got the Windows 7 Ultimate retail disc, which I've inserted into my machine. I ran setup.exe and went through in the following order: Install now Go online to get latest updates (I've also tried not getting updates) Wait for updates to be downloaded Select Windows 7 Ultimate (x64 architecture) and click next Accept the T&Cs, click next Click Upgrade At this point it spends a minute on the "checking compatibility" screen, after which I get the following error: The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue. You can’t upgrade 64-bit Windows to a 32-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 64-bit version of the installation disc, or go online to see how to install Windows 7 and keep your files and settings. 32-bit Windows cannot be upgraded to a 64-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 32-bit version of the Windows installation disc. It also mentions a warning about potential conflicts with a storage driver and VS2010, but that doesn't seem to be the blocking issue. My currently installed version of Windows is Ultimate 64-bit (absolutely sure of this) and the disc is definitely a x86 / x64 combined Ultimate retail disc. There seem to be a few people who have run into this (e.g. this question), but I've not seen any answers. I've checked the event viewer, but can't spot anything in there that's related.   Question: What is the way to determine, ahead of time and without doing a full install of 64-bit Debian Testing NETINST, when Debian Testing has 32-bit libraries available and fully working and installable so that the following command works without broken package errors?: apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk The errors that occur when 32-bit libraries are not available, still in some broken state, or whatever is broken are detailed below. I already have concluded that "Just install Stable" is my stop-gap measure for now, but I would like to know the answer to the above question so as to avoid a lengthy installation process only to run into these problems at the very end. Details: I downloaded the 64-bit Debian Testing netinst a couple of days ago. This was "Jessie" built 20131014-06:07 via http://tinyurl.com/lejpa. This is weekly testing build. Yes, I know I should expect problems, and I did. I managed to get it completely installed and was able to invoke into GNOME, but not get past the 32-bit library problem. The problems starts when I attempt to install the 32-bit libraries via: apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk that returns: root@breath:~# apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk Reading package lists... • Is dual-booting an OS more or less secure than running a virtual machine?

  I run two operating systems on two separate disk partitions on the same physical machine (a modern MacBook Pro). In order to isolate them from each other, I've taken the following steps: Configured /etc/fstab with ro,noauto (read-only, no auto-mount) Fully encrypted each partition with a separate encryption key (committed to memory) Let's assume that a virus infects my first partition unbeknownst to me. I log out of the first partition (which encrypts the volume), and then turn off the machine to clear the RAM. I then un-encrypt and boot into the second partition. Can I be reasonably confident that the virus has not / cannot infect both partitions, or am I playing with fire here? I realize that MBPs don't ship with a TPM, so a boot-loader infection going unnoticed is still a theoretical possibility. However, this risk seems about equal to the risk of the VMWare/VirtualBox Hypervisor being exploited when running a guest OS, especially since the MBP line uses UEFI instead of BIOS. This leads to my question: is the dual-partitioning approach outlined above more or less secure than using a Virtual Machine for isolation of services? Would that change if my computer had a TPM installed? Background: Note that I am of course taking all the usual additional precautions, such as checking for OS software updates daily, not logging in as an Admin user unless absolutely necessary, running real-time antivirus programs on both partitions, running a host-based firewall, monitoring outgoing network connections, etc. My question is really a public check to see if I'm overlooking anything here and try to figure out if my dual-boot scheme actually is more secure than the Virtual Machine route. Most importantly, I'm just looking to learn more about security issues. EDIT #1: As pointed out in the comments, the scenario is a bit on the paranoid side for my particular use-case. But think about people who may be in corporate or government settings and are considering using a Virtual Machine to run services or applications that are considered "high risk". Are they better off using a VM or a dual-boot scenario as I outlined? An answer that effectively weighs any pros/cons to that trade-off is what I'm really looking for in an answer to this post. EDIT #2: This question was partially fueled by debate about whether a Virtual Machine actually protects a host OS at all. Personally, I think it does, but consider this quote from Theo de Raadt on the OpenBSD mailing list: x86 virtualization is about basically placing another nearly full kernel, full of new bugs, on top of a nasty x86 architecture which barely has correct page protection.   I have a RHEL 5 workstation with 2 nvidia Quadro FX4500 cards, with one display attached to each card. After doing a clean install of RHEL 5.5, the second display doesnt work (it worked ok in RHEL 5.2). Neither separate X screens nor Xinerama are working. The kernel version is 2.6.18-194.el5 I've tried nvidia drivers 185.18.36 (the ones that i was using on 5.2) and the latest 260.19.36 and neither works. • Apache/Jboss Issue - is this connection timeout?

  We have an application. The architecture is as below 1 load balancer (apache), which redirects to 2 app servers (jboss). The site is working fine and I am able to access it fine. But sometimes, randomly the homepage takes a while (like 30-40 secs) to load. I tried checking the logs but could not figure out why. I used the httptraffic analyzer, fiddler to see the traffic, but it just says the request/response took 30 secs or so. I checked the apache access logs, mod_jk.log. • Slow Memcached: Average 10ms memcached `get`

  We're using Newrelic to measure our Python/Django application performance. Newrelic is reporting that across our system "Memcached" is taking an average of 12ms to respond to commands. Drilling down into the top dozen or so web views (by # of requests) I can see that some Memcache get take up to 30ms; I can't find a single use of Memcache get that returns in less than 10ms. More details on the system architecture: Currently we have four application servers each of which has a memcached member. All four memcached members participate in a memcache cluster. We're running on a cloud hosting provider and all traffic is running across the "internal" network (via "internal" IPs) When I ping from one application server to another the responses are in ~0.5ms Isn't 10ms a slow response time for Memcached? As far as I understand if you think "Memcache is too slow" then "you're doing it wrong". So am I doing it wrong? • Setting up Apache and PHP on Mac OS X Snow Leopard

  I've recently purchased an Apple iMac. Unfortunately, enabling Apache and PHP has thrown up some problems. I enabled Mac's built-in Web Sharing through System Preferences, at which point I got an output and could add HTML files to my user directory. However, PHP files were being displayed rather than interpreted. I then discovered this is because PHP isn't enabled by default on Mac's Apache set-up. So any points on reversing the aforementioned, and then successfully enabling PHP would be great. EDIT: I've discovered, via Console, the following error message is being recorded when trying to browse to 127.0.0.1... (org.apache.httpd) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds no listening sockets available, shutting down Unable to open logs (org.apache.httpd[13453]) Exited with exit code: 1 Does this point any more to the issue? URL1 ( http://www.uppereast.com ) is not being redirected to URL2 ( http://www.nyclocalliving.com ). This definitely worked in my test environment where a localhost address was rewritten to URL2 ( RewriteRule ^http://upe.localhost$ http://www.nyclocalliving.com ). I'm trying to get the all of the redirect rules working ( 2200 + ), but the 'http://www.nyclocalliving.com' site encounters a server error if I use more that 1000 or more rules.   I'm pretty new to the whole Netflix OSS stack and deployments in general. As a background for my current level of knowledge ops-wise, my main role is as a front-end application engineer. However, I enjoy the operations side of things, so I'm attempting to setup a new deployment strategy and the tooling for a new project. Our Goals Super easy deploys (we want to push a button to update production) Automated deploys to test environments (using Jenkins) Ease of maintenance (we have an app to write, don't want to spend our time fiddling with production issues) Ability to handle a service oriented architecture (many small apps, various languages and data stores) Enough flexibility to ensure we won't have to change strategies any time soon (we're already trying to get away from RightScale) We're OK with a little more initial setup time if doing so will save us some headaches in the future. So, along these lines, I've been listening to podcasts, watching Ops talks, and reading tons of blog posts and based on our goals and what I've taken to be some forming best practices, we've started forming a plan using Asgard, rolling our package into a jar and rolling that into an AMI. We had this all planned out and like the advantages the process versus using a Chef server and converging instances on the fly (we felt this was error prone given our limited timeline and lack of understanding around a Chef server workflow). However, a coworker did a little looking around on his own and felt like Elastic Beanstalk met our needs. I've looked into it and spun up a test environment with a WAR file and an attached RDS database. Things seem to work and I believe that we can automate deploys to a testing environment using Jenkins via the AWS API. Seems simple enough... perhaps too simple. What I'm wondering is, what's the catch? If Elastic Beanstalk is so simple and effective, why isn't it talked about more? I'm having a hard time finding enough objective opinions and facts about the two different deployment strategies, so I thought I'd ask around. Do you use Elastic Beanstalk? If so, why and what factors lead to that decision? What do you like and dislike? If you don't use Elastic Beanstalk but considered it, what do you use and why didn't you use Elastic Beanstalk? What are the advantages and disadvantages to a Elastic Beanstalk based deployment strategy for an SOA? That is, will Elastic Beanstalk work well with many small applications that rely on each other to work?

• Understanding packet flows over RVI

  I'm trying to get a full grasp of firewall filters and how to apply them on a Juniper EX4200 switch - to be able to block ports, police traffic and shape traffic. The network architecture is as follows internet >-< vlan4000 >-< vlan43 vlan4000 is a public "routed" block (where all the IPs are routed to and the internet gw is) vlan43 is a vlan with public IPs with devices (servers) attached There are static routes and RVI's on the EX4200 to send all traffic via vlan4000's gateway to reach the internet. I've set up filters on both input and output of the respective RVI's and VLAN's - with simple counters, to measure traffic flow from a server inside of vlan43 and a server on the internet. Then globally limit/police all outbound traffic to the internet Block inbound ports to vlan43 (eg. 22) Limit outbound traffic from vlan43 (to the internet) Limit outbound traffic from vlan43 (to other vlans) Limit outbound traffic from vlan4000 (to the internet from all vlans) Route traffic from vlans via specific routing instances (FBF) The question What I want to understand is why there isn't ever any activity on unit4000 or vlan4000 inbound or outbound counter - is this because there isn't a device on this VLAN - and that the traffic is only traversing it? And with regards to the TCP test - why is there twice as many packets on unit43-counter-in, vlan4000-counter-out and vlan43-counter-in - is this counting both the inbound and outbound traffic?

• Custom built machine has much higher power consumption than expected

  I built a machine according to the specs of a computer magazine (c't, Germany). According to the magazine, the power consumption should be at around 10W. I don't want to go into the specifics of the hardware but rather ask for general advice on where to look: I updated the BIOS/UEFI version to the latest version, installed all the recommended drivers and unplugged all hardware that's not necessary to boot into Windows. All that was left is the power supply, mainboard, cpu, cpu cooler and one SSD drive. But still I measured a power consumption of 50W, which is 40W more than it should be. I tried booting Linux Mint from a USB stick, so I don't think it's some Windows-related problem.. Where else could I look? Update 1 I dind't want the question to get closed for being too localized but if more details are necessary, here they are: The system is a desktop PC. The power consumption is measured using a Brennenstuhl PM 231 device, which was tested also by c't and they found it quite accurate. The PSU is an Enermax ETL300AWT, the mainboard Intel DH87RL (Socket 1150) and the CPU Intel G3220 (Haswell). Update 2 There is no online version of the article*. The most details I found can be read on its project page (in German, though...) (*)You can pay for downloadable PDFs, however. English translation of that project page Update 3 Regarding the sceptics: It may sound ridiculous but apparently 10W idle consumption is possible with Intel's Haswell architecture. As a kind of proof, there's an additional Blog article explicitly listing the steps needed to reduce the idle consumption to 10W. Additional hardware: I measured the consumption without the HDD, and as expected the usage dropped by around 10W. I have no chassis fans and the CPU fan is a "Scythe Mugen 4" model. It runs at around 600rpm so I think it won't draw much. When stripping off all my extra components I should be at 10W. But I'm not getting anywhere near that. I would be happy to see "just" 15W in the stripped down version but currently I'm not getting below 50W no matter which component I remove. As I see it this cannot be explained by the PSU being less efficient at lower consumption. I also waited half an hour or so (also checked that no Windows updates were running in the background) and the consumption dind't drop by more than a few watts.
