• what causes the .NET SerialPort class DataReceived event to fire?

  I understand from the MSDN docs that the event DataReceived will not necessarily fire once per byte. But does anyone know what exactly is the mechanism that causes the event to fire? Does the receipt of each byte restart a timer that has to reach, say 10 ms between bytes, before the event fires? I ask because I'm trying to write an app that reads XML data coming in from a serial port. Because my laptop has no serial ports, I use a virtual serial port emulator. (I know, I know--I can't do anything about it ATM). When I pass data through the emulated port to my app, the event fires once for each XML record (about 1500 bytes). Perfect. But when a colleague at another office tries it with two computers connected by an actual cable, the DataReceived event fires repeatedly, after every 10 or so bytes of XML, which totally throws off the app.

• Syncronize an SVN repo (svnsync) with encoding errors

  Is it possible to fix/bypass non-UTF8 encoded svn:log records when syncronizing repositories with svnsync? Background I'm in the process of taking over the maintenance of an open source module that is stored within a large (well over 10,000 revisions) subversion (1.5.5) repository. I do not have admin access to the remote repository to dump/filter/load the module. The old repository is being discontinued and I am trying to sync the original sub module to my local (1.6+) repository with svnsync. For example: svnsync file://home/svn/temp-repo/ http://path.to.repo/modulename/ The problem is that the old repository didn't enforce UTF8 encoding and I'm hitting errors like: svnsync: Cannot accept 'svn:log' property because it is not encoded in UTF-8 I can't modify the log property in the source repository so I need to somehow modify or ignore the property value when the encoding is unknown/invalid. Any ideas? For example, is it possible to write a pre-revprop-change script to modify the log property in transit?

I would like to have them progressive loaded form my website using HTML5 video tag. video_big.mp4 encoded for iOS on Wifi H.264 Baseline, 25fps, 640x480, 500kbps video_small.mp4 encoded for iOS on Edge/3G H.264 Baseline, 25fps, 320x240, 56kbps My question is: How can I write the HTML5 video tag to serve video_big.mp4 to iOS devices that connected through Wifi, and serve video_small.mp4 to iOS devices that connected through Edge/3G?   hi all friends, I am making a game application in that I want to pass my score on wall of face book. I've completed all the things (the log in and message passing part) but when I passes the score via global variable, I am getting only null as a value and not the score that I want. Is there any way to pass data or string to Face book and write on a wall? • Find valid assignments of integers in arrays (permutations with given order)

  Hi everybody! I am having a general problem finding a good algorithm for generating each possible assignment for some integers in different arrays. Lets say I have n arrays and m numbers (I can have more arrays than numbers, more numbers than arrays or as much arrays as numbers). As an example I have the numbers 1,2,3 and three arrays: { }, { }, { } Now I would like to find each of these solutions: {1,2,3}, { }, { } { }, {1,2,3}, { } { }, { }, {1,2,3} {1,2}, {3}, { } {1,2}, { }, {3} { }, {1,2}, {3} {1}, {2,3}, { } {1}, { }, {2,3} { }, {1}, {2,3} {1}, {2}, {3} So basically I would like to find each possible combination to assign the numbers to the different arrays with keeping the order. So as in the example the 1 always needs to come before the others and so on... I want to write an algorithm in C++/Qt to find all these valid combinations. Does anybody have an approach for me on how to handle this problem? How would I generate these permutations?

  I have a requirement to write a web service that allows me to post an image to a server along with some additional information about that image. I'm completely new to developing web services (normally client side dev) so I'm a little stumped as to what I need to look into and try. How do you post binary data and plain text into a servic? What RequestFormat should I use? It looks like my options are xml or json. Can I use either of these? Bit of a waffly question but I just need some direction rather than a solution as I can't seem to find much online.

• SQLite doesn't have booleans or date-times...but C# does

  I've been thinking about using SQLite for my next project, but I'm concerned that it seems to lack proper datetime and bit data types. If I use DbLinq (or some other ORM) to generate C# classes, will the data types of the properties be "dumbed down"? Will date-time data be placed in properties of type string or double? Will boolean data be placed in properties of type int? If yes, what are the implications? I'm envisioning a scenario where I need to write a whole second layer of classes with more specific data types and do a bunch of transformations and casts, but maybe it's not so bad. If you have any experience with this or a similar scenario, what are your "lessons learned"?

  I'm attempting to sum daily purchase amounts for a given user. @dates is an array of 31 dates. I need the find condition to compare a date from the array to the created_at date of the purchases. What I'm doing below compares the exact DateTime for the create_at column. I need it to look at the day itself, not the DateTime. This function takes several objects in the form of oldFunction( object1, object2, object3, ...) where ... are other arguments. I want to write a wrapper to take a list of objects.   Hi, I'm trying to create a database connection in a python script to my DB2 database. When the connection is done I've to run some different SQL statements. I googled the problem and has read the ibm_db API (http://code.google.com/p/ibm-db/wiki/APIs) but just can't seem to get it right. I really tried everything (or, not everything but pretty damn close) and I can't get it to work. I just need to make a automatic test python script that can test different queries with different indexes and so on and for that I need to create and remove indexes a long the way. • Windows API calls from assembly while minimizing program size

  I'm trying to write a program in assembly and make the resulting executable as small as possible. Some of what I'm doing requires windows API calls to functions such as WriteProcessMemory. I've had some success with calling these functions, but after compiling and linking, my program comes out in the range of 14-15 KB. (From a source of less than 1 KB) I was hoping for much, much less than that. I'm very new to doing low level things like this so I don't really know what would need to be done to make the program smaller. I understand that the exe format itself takes up quite a bit of space. Can anything be done to minimize that? I should mention that I'm using NASM and GCC but I can easily change if that would help.

  I have two decimal numbers. I want those number to be same upto 4 decimal points without rounding. If numbers are different I want 2nd number to be replaced by 1st. What if condition should I write? Eg, 1. num1 = 0.94618976 num2 = 0.94620239 If we round these numbers upto 4 decimal then we get 0.9462 same number, but I don't want to round these numbers. 2. num1 = 0.94620239 num2 = 0.94639125 The one way I found is take absolute difference of both numbers say diff and then check the value. My problem is of checking the range of diff. Thank You.

• Twisted - how to create multi protocol process and send the data between the protocols

  Hey, Im trying to write a program that would be listening for data (simple text messages) on some port (say tcp 6666) and then pass them to one or more different protocols - irc, xmpp and so on. I've tried many approaches and digged the Internet, but I cant find easy and working solution for such task. The code I am currently fighting with is here: http://pastebin.com/ri7caXih I would like to know how to from object like: ircf = ircFactory('asdfasdf', '#asdf666') get access to self protocol methods, because this: self.protocol.dupa1(msg) returns error about self not being passed to active protocol object. Or maybe there is other, better, easier and more kosher way to create single reactor with multiple protocols and have actions triggeres when a message arrives on any of them, and then pass that message to other protocols for handling/processing/sending? Any help will be highly appreciated!

  Ive made an address book. I can currently write to the arraylist and save it back to the .buab file, but I cant delete from the arraylist and export it back to the .buab file? Im pretty much stuck on this. Im able to retrive contacts from the .buab and scroll through them using the JTextFields and buttons ive created. Any help will be dearly appreciated.   Let's say I have to generate a bunch of result files, and I want to make it as fast as possible. Each result file is generated independently of any other result file; in fact, one could say that each result file is agnostic to every other result file. The resources used to generate each result file is also unique to each. How can I dynamically decide the optimal number of threads to run simultaneously in order to minimize the overall run time? Is my only option to write my own thread manager that watches performance counters and adjust accordingly or does there exists some solid classes that already accomplish this?

• Is JavaFx suitable for creating online multiplayer board/card games?

  In JavaFx i can easy create animations, moving pieces etc., but as far as i see there is better to write program logic and communication in java. Worst i see at the moment is calling javafx part as a result of data incoming from server. Is there any convenient way to do it or its better to change to other technology (flex, qt?) assuming it is not important if program will run in browser or outside as a standalone application? I just started to learn javafx but can drop it and move to other technology and consider c++ + wxWidgets or Qt which im more comforatable with.

• Generalized plugable caching pattern?

  Given that it's one of the hard things in computer science, does anyone know of a way to set up a plugable caching strategy? What I'm thinking of would allow me to write a program with minimal thought as to what needs to be cached (e.i. use some sort of boiler-plate, low/no cost pattern that compiles away to nothing anywhere I might want caching) and then when things are further along and I know where I need caching I can add it in without making invasive code changes. As an idea to the kind of solution I'm looking for; I'm working with the D programing language (but halfway sane C++ would be fine) and I like template.

  I never use the comma operator. But sometimes, when I write some recursions, I make a stupid mistake: I forget the function name. That's why the last operand is returned, not the result of a recursion call. This is basically an CRUD operation, so it doesn't really make sense to create repository/entity/command/event for this since this doesn't tie to any business rules at all. The only benefit to create a CQRS command is that this database write can happen asynchronously under that model. Which is a better route to take? Use CQRS, and then call a stored proc. when handling that command? Just call database directly in the controller (I am using asp.net mvc)

I mean I know that technically almost anything can be done, but im wondering if this can be done in a reasonable amount of time? E.g. < 2 weeks This page mentions how to write a CPD parser http://pmd.sourceforge.net/cpd-parser-howto.html But is this just for copy / paste detection? Does writing a CPD parser give me full support of PMD in terms of rile sets?
