• SQL 2008 Reporting Services Report Manager blank on Win 7

  I have installed SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services on my development laptop running windows 7. When I browse to the report manager, only the header is shown. The content pane is blank, and there is no 'Site Settings' option, New Folder options, etc. I found plenty of similar stories about SQL 2005, and then the fix was to manage permissions in the virtual directory in IIS. However, in 2008, there is no virtual directory - RS manages this outside of IIS. Per other serverfault articles, I've tried the following: adding my account to the reporting services group changing the service to run as local system made sure localhost was trusted site in IE ran IE as admin installed SQL Server 2008 SP1 There are no errors in the event viewer. Perhaps related, if I browse to the webservice, I also get the error: The permissions granted to user 'Computer\User' are insufficient for performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied)

• Bridging The Gap Between Developers And Testers With VS 2010

  On January 29th Etienne Tremblay and I presented infront of roughly 120 people in Ottawa a 7 hours "sketch" on how VS 2010 and TFS 2010 can help both devs and testers in their respective work.  The presentation focused on how a testers' work can positively influence a developers' work and vice versa.  The format was quite unusual as I said it's a "sketch" where Etienne and I "ignore" the audience and we do as if we were at work and the audience is sort of "spying" on us.  In all I'm quite pleased with the content we presented and the format sure was alot of fun to render and I think the audience liked it too...  The good news for you people reading this post is that it got RECORDED and it's now available for download in quick 25 to 35 minutes format on the dev teach web site:  http://www.devteach.com/ALM-TFS2010-Bridgingthegap.aspx   There where 2 cameras, one filming us and one capturing the screen for our demos.  We switch from one to another in an intersting flow and Jean-René Roy made sure he kept all our goofs and didn't edit those funny "oups moments" where we screw-up in the scenario...  Mostly educative but hilarious at times !!! • DNS and VPN issues

  I recently purchased a year contract for a KVM 512MB VPS running Ubuntu 11.04. I'm having some issues setting up some things on it though - two in particular that I just can't for the life of me figure out. Okay, so I'm trying to setup pptpd as my VPN for my iPhone and my Mac when I'm out on wireless networks. I'm able to login and the chap authenticates but that's as far as I get, no domains will resolve and end up loading forever, I uncommented ms-dns lines as someone had recommended to me and changed the DNS servers to Googles public ones with no luck, is there something I'm missing? (It's probably staring me in the face.) My second issue is that I have managed to setup LAMP but am having a problem with my domain, I have pointed the DNS at 123-reg to my VPS's IP and the 'www .' resolves properly, but when I try to go to the domain without the 'www .' I get the apache landing page ("The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet.") I'm pretty sure there's something I've gotta configure in Apache for the virtual host but I'm missing it. Apart from these minor set-backs I'm enjoying the low-level configuration options of having a VPS and love managing my own server. Thanks!

• china and gmail attacks

Based on our investigation to date we believe their attack did not achieve that objective. Only two Gmail accounts appear to have been accessed, and that activity was limited to account information (such as the date the account was created) and subject line, rather than the content of emails themselves.” [source] I don't know much about how internet works, but as long the chines gov has access to the chines internet providers servers, why do they need to hack gmail accounts? I assume that i don't understand how submitting/writing a message(from user to gmail servers) works, in order to be sent later to the other email address. Who can tell me how submitting a message to a web form works?

• Huge google impression drop after cleaning html

  Good morning, I am the webmaster of a non-profit organization that donates grants to colorectal cancer research projects and funds various colorectal cancer information campaigns. We have three domains: www.fundacioolgatorres dot org (Catalan) www.fundacionolgatorres dot org (Spanish) www.olgatorresfoundation dot org (English) So what happened? I redesigned olgatorresfoundation on the 20th and the fundacionolgatorres on the 30th of May. In both cases, exactly two days later, the number of impressions on both dropped to a halt. Granted, we did not have the traffic of Microsoft, but a 90% decrease a disaster of incredible proportions for us. My only real changes were cleaning up the old ineffective HTML to a cleaner form (mostly moving away from redundant table construction to a table-less view). Possible secondary question: If it is so that Google sees it as a major overhaul and decides to drop the pagerank sharply, does it come back to pre-change levels if the content "checks out" or will the page start over from scratch earning those pagerank points (which would mean that we would have to wait 6 months for the pages to recover to the level they had two weeks ago)? • deleting old unused images

  As we move on with our content-based websites, lots of images get dumped in our images folder, but we rarely come across self-committed monkyes that delete their files once they do not need it, which means, we end up with a huge list of images in one folder, and it is very tricky to clean it up. My question is (and i dont know if this is the right website to ask it), is there a tool that allows me to find out if an image has been requested by web in the last (n) months? my other general question is, how do you do it? how do you take control of your images folders? what policy do you enforce on developers to clean up? what measures do you take in order to decide what goes and what stays if you end up with an out-of-control situation? my suggestion was to rename the images folder, create a new one, copy the basic ones and wait for someone to complain about a broken image! :) i find this to be the most efficient.

• How to disable Apache http compression (mod_deflate) when SSL stream is compressed

  I found that Goggle Chrome supports ssl compression and Firefox should support it soon. I'm trying to configure Apache to to disable http compression if the ssl compression is used to prevent CPU overhead with the configuration option: SetEnvIf SSL_COMPRESS_METHOD DEFLATE no-gzip While the custom log (using %{SSL_COMPRESS_METHOD}x) shows that the ssl layer compression method is DEFLATE, the above option did not work and the http response content is still being compressed by Apache. I had to use the option: BrowserMatchNoCase ".Chrome." no-gzip' I prefer if there are more general method in case other browsers supports ssl compression or some has a version of chrome that does not have ssl compression.

• Apply SharePoint template to existing site?

  I have several similar SharePoint sites (running on WSS 3) and I have saved one of the sites as a template. I now want to make a different site (which already exists) have the same structure as this site--the same lists, document libraries, views, etc. I know I can delete the existing site and then recreate it based on this template, but is there a way to apply this template to my existing site, so that it gets rid of its existing lists, etc., and replaces them with the ones from the template? I don't have any content in the site, and I don't want to keep any of the existing structures, so I don't care if anything gets swept away. I may need to do this with a bunch of sites in the future, so being able to apply the template rather than recreating from scratch might be very helpful.

• Are there any home/soho NAS devices that will backup/sync to the cloud?

  Looking for a home office (SOHO) market (priced) network hard drive (NAS) that will sync some or all of its content to a cloud-based backup service. The only option I've been able to find so far is NetGear's [ReadyNAS Vault][1] however from what I've read it's not as secure as it could be, and the service is quite expensive ($200/yr for 50GB of cloud storage) - it's 'powered' by ElephantDrive Ideally would love to see something like Wuala integrated into a Lacie Network HDD - conveniently, I suspect this is in the works as Lacie recently acquired Wuala, however nothing has come of it yet. I know there are options to use rsync with a customizable NAS (such as the very versatile and hackable D-Link DNS-323, but the easier this is to setup and maintain, the better. Thanks! ps. • Timing issue with autohotscript, fails to dump or open destination file

  I've created a autohotscript to quickly dump selected text into my jot file on the Desktop and I think I'm facing a timing error. The script works like thus: Select text when reading a text file, browsing internet, reading PDF, etc. Hit Ctrl + J Contents of selected text is dumped into my jot file. When I press Ctrl + J very quickly, it sometimes doesn't come up in my jot file and sometimes when I keep pressing Ctrl + J for a long time, many instances of the text appear. • Why does StackExchange store images in imgur rather than its own servers? [migrated]

  I am trying to understand the technical (and business) logic behind taking such an approach. Certainly SE isn't short of server or bandwidth resources. I don't think imgur is a CDN, so that can't be the reason. On the one hand one is giving up local control (meaning your files, your hardware) of the content. On the other, you don't have to use your own bandwidth, storage and resources. Then again, you depend on someone else for the reliability and up-time of your service.

• How to zero out a drive?

  I'm currently running Ubuntu 12.04 and want to completely format my laptop so I can install Windows 7 (replace Ubuntu). When I put in my bootable USB with the OS it just shows a black screen with a white blinking cursor on the top left corner. I wait for hours (to be specific 5 whole hours) waiting for something to happen but I get nothing, so I pull out the USB and my Ubuntu 12.04 loads up. Repeated this several times with putting different boot priority options on top-est that relate to USB but the results are same. I go and visit some sites on the net like this http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/cant-replace-ubuntu-with-windows.175716/ that say I have to zero out my hard drive. My question is how? Note: Erasing out all my data is no problem cause I have nothing important to backup. If I have to lose my primary OS (Ubuntu 12.04) in the process I am ready to as my aim is just to install Windows 7 successfully. Please don't answer that there is something wrong with my USB or my USB reader/port/hardware or the content inside the USB cause they all works fine on my brothers PC as it boots up flawlessly.

• Amanda Todd&ndash;What Parents Can Learn From Her Story

  Amanda Todd was a bullied teenager who committed suicide this week. Her story has become headline news due in part to her You Tube video she posted telling her story:   The story is heartbreaking for so many reasons, but I wanted to talk about what we as parents can learn from this. Being the dad to two girls, one that’s 10, I’m very aware of the dangers that the internet holds. When I saw her story, one thing jumped out at me – unmonitored internet access at an early age. My daughter (then 9) came home from a friends place once and asked if she could be in a YouTube video with her friend. Apparently this friend was allowed to do whatever she wanted on the internet, including posting goofy videos. This set off warning bells and we ensured our daughter realized the dangers and that she was not to ever post videos of herself. In looking at Amanda’s story, the access to unmonitored internet time along with just being a young girl and being flattered by an online predator were the key events that ultimately led to her suicide. Yes, the reaction of her classmates and “friends” was horrible as well, I’m not diluting that. But our youth don’t fully understand yet that what they do on the internet today will follow them potentially forever. And the people they meet online aren’t necessarily who they claim to be. So what can we as parents learn from Amanda’s story? Parents Shouldn’t Feel Bad About Being Internet Police Our job as parents is in part to protect our kids and keep them safe, even if they don’t like our measures. This includes monitoring, supervising, and restricting their internet activities. In our house we have a family computer in the living room that the kids can watch videos and surf the web. It’s in plain view of everyone, so you can’t hide what you’re looking at. If our daughter goes to a friend’s place, we ask about what they did and what they played. If the computer comes up, we ask about what they did on it. Luckily our daughter is very up front and honest in telling us things, so we have very open discussions. Parents Need to Be Honest About the Dangers of the Internet I’m sure every generation says that “kids grow up so fast these days”, but in our case the internet really does push our kids to be exposed to things they otherwise wouldn’t experience. One wrong word in a Google search, a click of a link in a spam email, or just general curiosity can expose a child to things they aren’t ready for or should never be exposed to (and I’m not just talking about adult material – have you seen some of the graphic pictures from war zones posted on news sites recently?). Our stance as parents has been to be open about discussing the dangers with our kids before they encounter any content – be proactive instead of reactionary. Part of this is alerting them to the monsters that lurk on the internet as well. As kids explore the world wide web, they’re eventually going to encounter some chat room or some Facebook friend invite or other personal connection with someone. More than ever kids need to be educated on the dangers of engaging with people online and sharing personal information. You can think of it as an evolved discussion that our parents had with us about using the phone: “Don’t say ‘I’m home alone’, don’t say when mom or dad get home, don’t tell them any information, etc.” Parents Need to Talk Self Worth at Home Katie makes the point better than I ever could (one bad word towards the end): Our children need to understand their value beyond what the latest issue of TigerBeat says, or the media who continues flaunting physical attributes over intelligence and character, or a society that puts focus on status and wealth. They also have to realize that just because someone pays you a compliment, that doesn’t mean you should ignore personal boundaries and limits. What does this have to do with the internet? Well, in days past if you wanted to be social you had to go out somewhere. Now you can video chat with any number of people from the comfort of wherever your laptop happens to be – and not just text but full HD video with sound! While innocent children head online in the hopes of meeting cool people, predators with bad intentions are heading online too. As much as we try to monitor their online activity and be honest about the dangers of the internet, the human side of our kids isn’t something we can control. But we can try to influence them to see themselves as not needing to search out the acceptance of complete strangers online. Way easier said than done, but ensuring self-worth is something discussed, encouraged, and celebrated is a step in the right direction. Parental Wake Up Call This post is not a critique of Amanda’s parents. The reality is that cyber bullying/abuse is happening every day, and there are millions of parents that have no clue its happening to their children. Amanda’s story is a wake up call that our children’s online activities may be putting them in danger. My heart goes out to the parents of this girl. As a father of daughters, I can’t imagine what I would do if I found my daughter having to hide in a ditch to avoid a mob or call 911 to report my daughter had attempted suicide by drinking bleach or deal with a child turning to drugs/alcohol/cutting to cope. It would be horrendous if we as parents didn’t re-evaluate our family internet policies in light of this event. And in the end, Amanda’s video was meant to bring attention to her plight and encourage others going through the same thing. We may not be kids, but we can still honour her memory by helping safeguard our children.

  Already 10 days has passed since SQL Bits X in London. I really enjoyed it! Those kind of events are great not only for the content but also to meet friends that – due to distance – is not possible to meet every day. Friends from PASS, SQL CAT, Microsoft, MVP and so on all in one place, drinking beers, whisky and having fun. A perfect mixture for a great learning and sharing experience! I’ve also enjoyed a lot delivering my session on Temporal Snapshot Fact Tables. Given that the subject is very specific I was not expecting a lot of attendees….but I was totally wrong! It seems that the problem of handling daily snapshot of data is more common than what I expected. I’ve also already had feedback from several attendees that applied the explained technique to their existing solution with success. • How can we achive a 403 Permissions Denied for a subdomain?

  We have a multisite installed in the root directory (multisite.com) and also a wordpress single installation on a subdomain (help.multisite.com) In the root .htaccess we placed: #START Security: Disallow access to folders Options All -Indexes # END Security On the main site (as expected we get) "403 Permission Denied. You do not have permission for this request /wp-content/blogs.dir/83/" Nice. :) BUT. We just noticed that when trying to access the subdomains folders we get: Internal Server Error. The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.... Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error... This is something we do NOT want. So the question is: How can we avoid the above result and make the message for the subdomains be "403 Permission Denied" (the same as for the main site and NOT "500 Internal Server Error" (as it is now)? We put what, where?

Few of  my friends knowingly or unknowingly are using Social Reader apps and their online activity is automatically posted to the wall. To read these articles or watch videos shared by Social Reader application I need to add the application and allow it to automatically post. I don’t like Social Reader Apps and if you are one like me, here is a Google Chrome browser plugin that allows us to bypass Social Reader Apps. The extension Facebook Unsocial Reader smartly rewrites Facebook links in such a way that you will be able to access content of links without adding Social Reader Apps to your account. To rewrite the links, the extension cleverly uses Google I’m Feeling Lucky service and searches for the article’s title. The first search result of Google is almost perfect in identifying the original article link.
