• Video player with good subtitle rendering

  Is there any way to improve the subtitle rendering capabilities of Totem? The subtitles positioning seems to be hard-coded in it and even though the style is user-customizable, it does not confirm to the formatting in subtitle data. In some scenes where writings appear, the subtitles are supposed to appear next to those along with what is being said at that moment. However, on those scenes the translations of text onscreen appears on the default subtitle area with nothing about the things being said. The correct rendering are according to the open-source Windows video player, Media Player Classic - Home Cinema. There are no Linux port as far as I'm aware. If VLC's subtitle support is the same as in Windows, it won't work for me, period. Please suggest anyway to improve subtitle rendering in Totem, other video players, or a way to port MPC-HC.

• Does anyone prefer proportional fonts?

  I was reading the wikipedia article on programming style and noticed something in an argument against vertically aligned code: Reliance on mono-spaced font; tabular formatting assumes that the editor uses a fixed-width font. Most modern code editors support proportional fonts, and the programmer may prefer to use a proportional font for readability. To be honest, I don't think I've ever met a programmer who preferred a proportional font. Nor can I think of any really good reasons for using them. Why would someone prefer a proportional font?

  I want to use sendmail to send me stuff and want to do it in a oneliner. echo "mail content" | sendmail emailataddres.com Sends it without subject. The subject line must come before the Mail content, so I am looking for something along the lines of: echo "mail content" | prepend "Subject: All that matters" | sendmail emailataddres.com sed and awk tend to be really awkward to use and remember. EDIT:Just to clarify: echo "Mail content" is just an illustrating example. I need to be able to prepend stuff to stdout streams from any source. e.g.: ifconfig, zcat, etc..

• About uninstallation of Ubuntu to allow dual-boot

  I had windows XP and windows 7 previously. I wanted to keep windows XP and replace windows 7 by Ubuntu in a specific drive of hard disk. During installation of Ubuntu I found option replace windows 7 by Ubuntu and I did it. now I found that windows XP has also gone and Ubuntu is occupying the area of whole hard disk. Now I want to uninstall or format the hard disk because Ubuntu is new to me and I am not comfortable with Ubuntu only right now. I want to keep both windows XP and Ubuntu. so how can I uninstall Ubuntu or format hard disk?? please help....Is the formatting is possible by inserting windows XP CD?? Or is there any other way so that without uninstalling Ubuntu I can also install windows XP?

• Stuck on busybox after a fresh install

  I installed 11.10 and was getting stuck on Busybox unless I type exit. After grabbing the latest updates it then didn't get stuck on busybox but instead on a black screen of nothingness. I've now reformatted and started again using the exit technique for the time being. I had a search here before posting and none of the answers gave much insight, other than it 'could be a gfx card driver issue'. I'm using new hardware that has no issues with Mint, Win7 or WinXp. BUT note, I'm not dual booting, its a complete fresh install formatting the entire drive. Any help is appreciated as I'd really like to get stuck into Ubuntu. Thanks in advance. -Luke

How can I get the Avail on a single command line even if there are no values on the previous columns?

• Red Gate join the SSIS custom component club

  I recently noticed that Red Gate have launched themselves into the SSIS component market by releasing a new Data Cleanser component, albeit in beta for now. It seems to be quite a simple component, bringing together several features that you can find elsewhere, but with a suitable level  polish that you’d expect from them. String operations include find and replace with regular expressions, case formatting and trim, all of which are available today in one form or another, but will the RedGate factor appeal to people? Benefits include ease of use, all operations in one place, versus installing a custom component which many organisations do not like. I’m also interested to see where they take this and SSIS products in general, as it almost seems too simple for RedGate, a company I normally associate with more advanced problem solving. Perhaps they are just dipping a toe in the water with a simple component for now?

• I can't even login, black screen! [SOLVED]

  I wanted to fix something, and I followed the advice given by someone on the #ubuntu IRC chat. I don't think I did it properly, because now, I cannot even login and I have a black screen. Ii must be a Gdm / Lightdm issue... I am writing this from another computer. Is there a way I can solve this without formatting and losing all my files? All I have is the GRUB menu. I don't even have the recovery mode on the GRUB menu...

• Linux (non-transparent) per-process hugepage accounting

  I've recently converted some java apps to run with linux manually-configured hugepages. I've got about 10 tomcats running on a system and I am interested in knowing how much memory each one is using. I can get summary information out of /proc/meminfo as described in Linux Huge Pages Usage Accounting. But I can't find any tools that tell me about the actual per-process hugepage usage. I poked around in /proc/pid/numa_stat and found some interesting information that led me to this grossity: function pshugepage () { HUGEPAGECOUNT=0 for num in `grep 'anon_hugepage.*dirty=' /proc/$@/numa_maps | awk '{print $6}' | sed 's/dirty=//'` ; do HUGEPAGECOUNT=$((HUGEPAGECOUNT+num)) done echo process $@ using $HUGEPAGECOUNT huge pages } The numbers it gives me are plausible, but i'm far from confident this method is correct. Environment is a quad-CPU dell, 64GB ram, RHEL6.3, oracle jdk 1.7.x (current as of 20130728)

• cannot unset env variables from script

  Hi, I am trying to unset all environment variables from within a script. The script runs fine but if I run env it still shows all the variables set. If I run the command from CLI, it works and the variables are unset. unset `env | awk -F= '/^\w/ {print $1}' | xargs` Have any idea how to run this from a script? Also, have any idea how to source /etc/profile from a script? This doesn't work either. I need to set variables with same names but different paths, depending on the instances my users need.

  I'm trying to retrieve a list of multiple service statuses in Unix. I'm using the service command: man page. The statuses all start with the transmission-daemon string, for example. I require the ability to list multiple services' statuses, with a single command. Here is what I'm currently trying (and failing) with: Here I'm trying to grab a list of statuses using grep. service $(ls /etc/init.d | grep "transmission-daemon") status Here I'm trying to list all statuses, and then grep for them. service --status-all | grep "transmission-daemon" This produces the following, which isn't much help: How can I effectively achieve what I require with a single command, so that I can then continue piping to awk for further customisation? • Retrieve malicious IP addresses from Apache logs and block them with iptables

  Im trying to keep away some attackers that try to exploit XSS vulnerabilities from my website, I have found that most of the malicious attempts start with a classic "alert(document.cookie);\" test. The site is not vulnerable to XSS but I want to block the offending IP addresses before they found a real vulnerability, also, to keep the logs clean. My first thought is to have a script constantly checking in the Apache logs all IP addresses that start with that probe and send those addresses to an iptables drop rule. With something like this: cat /var/log/httpd/-access_log | grep "alert(document.cookie);" | awk '{print $1}' | uniq Why would be an effective way to send the output of that command to iptables? • Find keyword values from PDF [closed]

  I have a lot of PDF reports I'd need to index. They're mostly "text-based PDFs", not images. I know they all have account number in certain format, 123456AAAAA and some other keyword info like addresses, customer names etc. needed in indexing these files. Basically if the file is ab.pdf, I need to create ab.txt that contains: ACC=123456AAAA Customer=John Doe Date=20120808 What would be the best software/solution to generate indexing information for these? I know there's pdftotext, but piping it to different grep/awk commands is a hack... It would be nice to specify an area in PDF to search for the account number, and specify the format it is in.

• Ubuntu Linux: Process swap memory and memory usage

  My Ubuntu eats more memory than the task manager is showing: sudo ps -e --format rss | awk 'BEGIN{c=0} {c+=$1} END{print c/1024}' 1043.84 free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 3860 1878 1982 0 20 679 -/+ buffers/cache: 1178 2681 Swap: 2729 1035 1693 That's strange. Can someone explain this difference? But what is more important: I'd like to know how much memory a process is really using. I don't want to know the virtual memory size, but rather the resident memory plus swap of a process. I have also tried to output the format param "sz" of 'ps', but the sum of this is to high (5450 MB) (param 'size' gives 8323.45 MB). Are there any other options? I really want to use this, to determine which programs/processes are eating to much memory (and swap), to kill them, because hibernate might not be working if the swap partition is to little.

• Question about mod_rewrite rule for redirecting failing pages

  I'm setting up a mod_rewrite rule that redirects failing pages to a custom Page Not Found page. This is with Wordpress. I'm using the guide here: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/rewrite/rewrite_guide_advanced.html#redirect404. My rule so far looks like this: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^(.+) http://example.com/?page_id=254 [R] This works. It seems to be a combination of the first and second suggestion that worked, since the -U flag did nothing. My question is, out of curiosity why the following happens: When I change REQUEST_FILENAME to REQUEST_URI (as the second example suggests), the page loads, but none of the style sheets load. All of my formatting is gone, and this happens on every page. Can anyone think of why this might happen?

I am writing Python code where I want to use data from the file to perform a math function and need to extract the second column from the file. I have tried it this way: for k in range(1,10): file1=open('st009_out.abc'+str(k)+'.dat','r') ........... os.system("awk '{print $2}' st009_out.abc${k}.pmf > raj.dat") but this is not working as it is not taking the value of k in the shell command. How do I progress?

• I'm working on my resume for a job fair this week; any tips? [closed]

  This will change as I update the document, but here is my resume. The job fair I'm going to is really huge (very good chance that it will determine where I intern this summer), so I would definitely appreciate any possible assistance in polishing this up. Any advice possible will be appreciated, ranging from spacing or absurdly minor formatting issues, to rearranging bullet points, to browser incompatibilities, to major changes in anything I've organised or written. At the moment, my only specific question is whether easter eggs are acceptable (specifically, if representatives who understand the reference will generally frown upon my inclusion of "Hacked The Gibson", given the context). Also, if anyone wants to evaluate it (e.g. font size, final arrangement, etc.), here is a PDF snapshot of the document at the time this question was submitted (the final version will have a different file name and appropriate metadata, for the record).   In my Asterisk log file, I have a line like this (truncated): Executing [123@mycontext:1] Set("SIP/myhost-b7111840", "__INCOMINGCLI=4711") Now I want to do the following filtering while looking at the log file with tail -f: Match lines with a specific value for "INCOMINGCLI", storing the call ID (the "SIP/myhost-b7111840" part) Output all subsequent lines that contain the call ID. As a bonus, having a grep-like option like -A would be nice. I could do that easily in various programming languages, but how would I do it with standard UNIX commands like sed or awk? Can it be done with these commands?

  i'm a fan of ubuntu, but for now i want my installation to be perfect for my new laptop, its a series 5 of samsung with A6 processor. Somebody suggest what to do? or mention any problems related to this? Im more concern of the drivers to increase its performance because i am to develop an android app. I need "i dont know" to make this unit run as fast as possible without any dangerous tradeoffs. Also i read some forum saying that their units are overheating. -_- somebody help me please. and also i want to switch to gnome 3.
