• Is there any way of preventing .csv files being converted into excel format

  I'm trying to work with an automated testing tool which can use .csv files as its data sourse. After saving a notepad file containing a number of fields and data seperated by commas as .csv it appears to have been converted to an excel file. When I run the test, only the first line of values is identified and can be run within the automated test. Not sure if this is expected with the testing product (www.badboy.co.au), but just wondered if there was a way of preventing excel from taking control of the .csv file? Any helpfull feedback would be great.

• Big Excel File Freezing/Running Slowly

  Hi, My co-worker has a very large Excel file (over 7 MB) that suffers from the problems of (A) running slowly (B) taking forever to open/save/close and (C) freezing the computer, requiring a restart. I set the calculations to Manual, and I repaired the file, but the file didn't change in file size and it is still having these problems. My questions are: (1) Is there any way around this problem or is Excel just bad at handling ~7MB files? (2) Would upgrading RAM make a big difference? (3) It's possible that we can't afford to spend the money on a RAM upgrade. Are there are any other ways of mitigating the problem? Thanks.

• Win Server 2008 R2 - Mapped shared folder hanging?

  I have recently built a windows 2008 server R2 machine. This is purely for file server purposes and is very much a basic build. All windows updates installed and part of domain. I have setup a shared folder on the C:Drive and added permissions for domain users as co-owners. The client machines run XP SP3 and are part of the domain also. We have a few servers running the same setups on a few of our sites but this one is particular crashes users machines (explorer.exe hangs for at least a few mins) when attempting to access the shared folder. I have turned off the option on the network card for power save aswell still no change. Any help with this is very much appreciated and i look forward to hearing from you ;)

• Resize image on ViewSonic CD3200-EU

  My ViewSonic CD3200-EU monitor doesn't seem to have an option to scale the image vertically. I've tried all the buttons which look promising and even went as far as browsing the manual (possibly my first time). http://www.viewsoniceurope.com/uk/assets/004/9269.pdf Does anyone know if this can be done? I'm connecting with an android hdmi stick (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B008XX29WS/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00) so if there's any way to change screensize that way that would also be appreciated. • Where to look for regular scripts?

  It seems to me that our server freezes every 30 days around noon due to the huge utilization of xvda data transfer partition - writes are 50 times higher than normally (according to the health monitor in plesk). This seems to me as the reason why the apache & co becomes instable as (for example) all apache's processes are waiting to write their log (according to the service's full status). I am, however, unable to find any scheduled task that would be executed during that period. I have checked both cron and anacron setup and there is only one monthly anacron task which is not executed (according to the /var/log/cron - and there is nothing unusual) around noon. Are there any other places where to look for periodical processes? (I am just about to ask server's provider the same question about any external maintenance run around this time but I don't expect them to run anything time/resource consuming during the day.)

  Hi i am trying to connect 2 ubuntu computers as a LAN. In my current setup I have: One machine running ubuntu 11.10 with Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller While the other machine is running Ubuntu 12.04 with an Atheros Communications Inc AR8152 v1.1 Fast Ethernet The two machines are connected via a switch (Edimax ES-3205P). Unfortunately I still cannot connect the two machines together. Can somebody please show me what to do and how to go about solving this issue?

• OpenBSD: Gateway outside subnet (works in Linux)

  We need to set up an OpenBSD host to use a default gateway that's outside of it's subnet. This is all I need to do on Linux (not the actual IPs) to achieve it: ifconfig eth0 33.33.33.33/31 up route add 33.33.33.254 dev eth0 route add default gw 33.33.33.254 The problem is that we don't know the proper equivalent of the middle command in OpenBSD. The man page says: If the destination is directly reachable via an interface requiring no intermediary system to act as a gateway, the -iface modifier should be specified; Sadly we can't seem to figure out how to make it work with that. • How can I get Google to re-point its search entries to new domain?

  My main .com domain registration lapsed and when I went to re-register it, I found that a domain reseller service squatted it and I've lost access to it. As I wasn't terribly keen on spending money on funding scammers and the like, I registered a .co.uk domain under the same name. Is there any way of getting Google to re-point all its indexed links to the new domain? It's been indexing my blog for a couple years now and while it's not too big a deal, I'd like to not have to start all over again. Also, searching for my site results in an old entry which is currently pointing at a "Apply for a Tax Break NOW!!!" page.

• Redirect non-www ssl traffic to www ssl (apache)

  Hello, I'm attempting to get a redirect which is failing, and for some reason I can't think today. I have a vHost file within HTTPD that listens on standard port 80 and port 443. I'm attempting to redirect https://domain.com/(.*) to https://www.domain.com/$1 so that the URL remains intact. My config is as follows: ServerName www.domain.com ServerAlias tempdomain.testdomain.co.uk ServerAlias domain.com My rerwrite rule I'm using is. RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^domain.com$ RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://www.domain.com$1 [R=301,L] I've also tried removing the . and $ but nothing.. When I visit the url https://domain.com/secure.page?action=comp it doesn't redirect to https://www.domain.com/secure.page?action=comp I do also have other SSL pages, the above was just an example.. Can anyone point out my stupidity.

• Would a switch be covered by a router's firewall

  So... Hopefully; this is the right place for this question. I need more Ethernet ports on my home network. Sadly, we already have an old router connected to the main router and we still need more ports. I feel dumb for asking; but, I just would like to double check. Would the devices connected to the switch be "protected" by the Main router's firewall? ? Up to this point I have assumed that was the case; but, a co-worker is convinced that is not the case [ I believe he is thinking of a situation in which the switch (un-managed) is before an access point]. [It would go modem to main router; main router then has the switch and old router connected to it.

• Enable (or work around) Administrative shares in Windows 8

  So in using Windows 8, I've discovered that the administrative shares are disabled. There seems to be no easy way to get them re-enabled. Is anyone aware of a work around, or solution? I did not have this issue with Windows 7 After disabling UAC. However in Windows 8 this still doesn't work. • Windows Server 2008 - Setting Up DNS and Web Server (IIS) to host personal website?

  Okay, I have a server, (Windows Server 2008 R2 to be more precise) and I have installed PHP, MySQL, phpMyAdmin, for web hosting purposes. I have set up a static ip address internally. I have installed the role DNS and Web Server (IIS) role. I now set up my forward looking zone as my chosen domain. I set up the nameservers as ns1.domain.co.uk with my IP address which I found from whatismyip.org. However, when I type my IP address, it times out with an error (Timeout Error). Am I doing something wrong? Am I missing something? Also I have seen that most websites have multiple nameservers, which are apparently mirror IP addresses which all redirect to one IP address. Also, I can locally connect using the IP address 192.168.0.8, however, I want to put my website online/live on the internet. Can anyone help me with this? -- Regards

  One of my co-workers once saw a device that plugged into a RJ45 jack, that emulated a PC. It could be configured with an IP address, and respond to pings. I was wondering if anyone knew about these, or even what they are called? This will be used to simulate a PC in a classroom environment. Thanks in advance. Edit: This is a CCNA classroom, we are looking to simulate a PC connected to an ethernet port on a router. These will be on different subnets, etc. This might be doable with a VM through VLANs and virtual switches, but then we are getting away from configuring the physical ports on the router the way we want to.

  Question As a general practice, is it a good idea to use multiple TLDs for the name servers? How should I choose between which TLD would be a good candidate for being the root server for my NS name? More Info I am switching over 800 DNS zones to an outsourced DNS provider. I originally planned on setting the zone names to nsX.company.com, but think it would be best to have multiple TLDs such as .net , .org and .info Since I plan on supporting DNSSec at company.com I think all the 1st tier Name servers must support it as well. Part of the inspiration for this question came from our provider UltraDNS. • Video streaming over multi display units

  We have to share video across around 4/8 terminals at a public facility where we need to display live video from within the facility, as well as display messages(advertisements), and also play videos(not live) which need to be controlled centrally from another location. We can do central location handling over Internet, over ssh. What we want to do is connect cameras to a computer, and use the computer to display over multiple display units. We need to do live titling if possible. Once the live local telecast which usually takes about an hour or two a day, we would like to play other videos locally off the PC server. Preferably everything should run off Linux, since budgets are very constrained.... Addendum -- Its not over WAN, it's over a local area. I prefer not using LAN, we would rather use co-axial cable if possible. The reason is if it's LAN, I need some kind of an Networking device, at least a thin client

• Problem with Lenovo x200s Wifi under Ubutu Karmic

  Hi, I have just gotten my Lenovo X200s laptop, and I am install Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic on it. • What is the procedure to replace a failing hard drive in a RAID array?

  3 years ago a co-worker setup a software RAID-6 array on Ubuntu 9.04 and I'm getting messages from the OS that the drive has bad sectors and should be replaced. I'd like to remove this drive and replace it with a new drive, however, I have never done this before and I'm terrified that in the process of fixing the array I'm going to end up ruining it. I know the device ID of the array and I know the device IDs of the individual drives in the array. Additionally I physically have the bad drive. What are the steps to replace the bad drive with a new drive and get the array running again?

• Can I add right-click options in Google Chrome?

  In Google Chrome, if I select a piece of text and right click on it, I get the option to: 'Search Google for [text]' I find this extremely useful but I'd also like to be able to add my own options. • Load balanced proxies to avoid an API request limit

  There is a certain API out there which limits the number of requests per day per IP. My plan is to create a bunch of EC2 instances with elastic IPs to sidestep the limitation. I'm familiar with EC2 and am just interested in the configuration of the proxies and a software load balancer. I think I want to run a simple TCP Proxy on each instance and a software load balancer on the machine I will be requesting from. Something that allows the following to return a response from a different IP (round robin, availability, doesn't really matter..) eg. curl http://www.bbc.co.uk -x http://myproxyloadbalancer:port Could anyone recommend a combination of software or even a link to an article that details a pleasing way to pull it off? (My client won't be curl but is proxy aware.. I'll be making the requests from a Ruby script..)

  I have a bash script where I need to run an init utility within a directory with a configuration file defined. I don't think it's possible to explicitly tell the utility to run the file as an argument, so what I need to do is go to the directory with the config file, and then run the command. I have some logic in place, but its not working -- the utility never runs. • How does a Promise FastTrak 133 interleave a striped array?

  I co-worker had two drives configured as a stripe on a motherboard with an on-board Promise FastTrak 133. The motherboard failed, and we've been unable to find any others with an on-board Promise controller which can recognize the array. With Linux or some disk editors, I can see data on both drives... and I want to see if I can combine the data from both drives onto a single, larger drive. But I need to know how that information is interleaved on the drives. I've tried dmraid on Linux, but that doesn't recognize the drives as an array. I guess I could just try combining alternating blocks from the drives, starting with a block size of 256B and keep doubling until I get a result that looks intact. But I'd like to avoid that if someone already knows how Promise controllers spread the data over a striped array.

  We are using Git as the version control for our website development. I work from a laptop, which is connected to the internal network via a WiFi connection. I've mapped the server drives as network drives in Windows. Commands such as git status take significantly longer for me than they do for my co-workers on wired connections. • Mount drive with two drive letters instead of one.

  Hi everyone a co-worker of mine absolutely insists that it's possible to mount a drive in windows server 2003 with two letters instead of one. He's not talking about mounting a drive into an empty ntfs - folder. example: use ab:\ instead of a:. I'm pretty sure that's not possible. I'm working with over 300 windows servers and never noticed that kind of feature. I also cant find any knowledge base or technet article which describes that kind of feature.
