  for the longest time after about 5 minutes my screen would blank out. Now the screen will go blank after 5 minutes but then 2 seconds after that it will light up white and keep the laptop backlighting on. I didnt change any settings to my knowledge it just happened randomly after powering it on one day and has occurred since then. I wish to resort back to blanking the screen out completely since i leave this computer on all the time and its hard to sleep with a huge white light all the time. "xset dpms force off" just yeilds me ---- xset: unable to open display ""

• Best Way to Handle Meta Information in a SQL Database

  I've got a database where I want to store user information and user_meta information. The reason behind setting it up in this way was because the user_meta side may change over time and I would like to do this without disrupting the master user table. If possible, I would like some advice on how to best set up this meta data table. I can either set it as below: +----+---------+----------+--------------------+ | id | user_id | key | value | +----+---------+----------+--------------------+ | 1 | 1 | email | [email protected] | | 2 | 1 | name | user name | | 3 | 1 | address | test address | ... • How can I fix a shaky touchpad cursor in Ubuntu on my hp pavilion laptop?

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop and it works great, except after the initial reboot my touchpad cursor shakes violently when I hold my finger completely still on the pad.It works fine with a regular mouse plugged in. I couldn't find much scouting around the internet except that it might be that my touchpad doesn't have any dead zones? I am very new to Ubuntu and am fairly computer savvy, but I don't know a lot about using the terminal or anything like that, so if you could dumb down a fix for this as much as possible for me, I'd greatly appreciate it.

• How do I reset a lost Administrative(root) password?

  I'm working on a Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) system using a Panasonic CF-50 Laptop. My Client has completely forgotten his Administrative Password. He doesn't even remember entering one; however it is there. I've tried the suggestions on the WebSite and I have been unsuccessful in deleting the password so that I can download applets required for running some files. Do you have a solution? Here's several scenarios which may comment with owner name: bug fixing, i.e. // fixed bug 123 by xxx, solution is ... ... fixme/todo tags, i.e. // TODO: .... by xxx. hacks, i.e. // HACK! ... by xxx For case #2, please refer to Comment Tags The obvious advantage is that we can ease tracking by names. The downside is the risk of abuse. Actually my previous company allowed this way of commenting style, but current employer completely disallows names appearing in code. In my opinion, I would vote for discreetly commenting with author names. I'm open to hear from you if this commenting style is good or bad. Thanks.

• Cant install Ubuntu. How do you format a Windows HDD

  I have an HP 630, and would like to install Ubuntu. All goes well until the point where you have to choose how you want Ubuntu installed. I choose on the whole HDD, I want Windows off the HDD. I press enter and about 5 seconds later the CD tray open and the computer reboots. This happens over and over. How do I format this Window HDD completely to install Ubuntu 13.04. I have tried 3 different CD's and the same thing happens each time.

• Computer freezes up

  I am using the latest Ubuntu OS and up-to-date Chrome browser. Occasionally when I am working at a 5 hour stretch, the computer will freeze up completely and I will have to close down manually and reboot. When this happens I lose the material I have been working on as I cannot save it. And I often receive a notice at this time saying that my profile is not available or that I do not have a profile. I am an Ubuntu user not a technician and do not know what to do about this problem.

• Turn Off Sleep on Seagate GoFlex?

  I bought this 2tb Segate GoFlex this last Black Friday and since then every 15 minutes or so the drive spins down, and then a little while later completely dismounts. Very annoying. From what I understand you could turn this off using the including Windows and Mac only software. This function and what controls it isn't proprietary, right? There has to be something that'll let me set it in Ubuntu... Anyone have any suggestions? Also, I formatted it to EXT4. Hope I didn't screw myself up. :/

• Dropbox 99% instalation crash. Strange "Searching" Ubuntu Software Center bug [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Dropbox fails to install, stuck at 99% I just installed Dropbox via Ubuntu Software Center, and the known crash of 99%, which was in Ubuntu Software center, happened. I want to remove Dropbox completely since something went wrong, but I can't. When I start my Ubuntu, it starts a process which eats up all of the CPU. In Ubuntu Software Center, there is a process "Searching Applying Changes", but nothing really happens. When I'm trying to uninstall Dropbox, nothing happens, since the seaching thing is "first". Please, I'm asking for a option which doesn't include proper reinstallation of Dropbox, only of getting rid of it, and without reinstalling the whole Ubuntu system (format, chaos etc).

  I find completely contradicting reviews for the VERY same book on amazon and even some book writers are rewarding people for good reviews so basically most of the reviews are totally fake ! You can even figure it out from the reviewer name, which you'll similar to the writer's name and assume that they could actually be from the same country and the reviewer is just being helpful, to the book writer of course ! I can't make my mind for which book I should buy ! I only need a book or two that covers the Java associate and professional topics very well, not just an overview, I need a material that covers everything from A to Z. Even though I've been developing in Java for around 4.5 years but I must not know a detail or two. Would someone kindly shed some light on a good book based on actual experience with the book ? I'm building it from scratch, because I think that in this way I will learn the most. I have stumbled upon MVC's and CMS, CodeIgniter really got my attention, and the basic use is very straight forward. But I do not understand the inner workings completely. So I have decided that it might be better to just develop from scratch and maybe return to codeIgniter later, was that good decision? Would it be better to use CodeIgniter and learn from that?

  I was searching for a book to learn C#, but now i'm kinda stuck. I found many people asking the same question, and many people gave answers, but there are so many books about C# that it is really hard to decide which one to take. Now i reduced my choice on two books, but I just can't decide between them. Namely, there are: Programming C# 4.0 and C# 4.0 In A Nutshell The first thing I want to know, are these good choices? I'm not completely new to programming, but I just didn't find the right language until know, but i think C# is the one I was searching for. I know all the bassic stuff from Delphi/Java/Python so I think i'm not a complete beginner in programming. Is there anyone out there that read both books and can cleary explain whats the difference between them? I haven't found many reviews and sort of, so I just don't know which one to chose. Or is there any book that is better suiting me?

• my laptop touchpad stops working during the live demo

  I m completely new to all of this... I just want to install ubuntu because it is suppose to get rid of most of the virus problems, so anyway I was following online instructions to install ubuntu alongside windows 7 these are my laptop specifications. I tried booting with a pendrive using netbootin and other similar program but once I boot the laptop in ubuntu I click try without installing button and go to desktop then my mouse stops working. • Fancybox - ASP.NET button not working

  I've just determined using Firebug that when Fancybox window is created it actually takes all of my ASP.NET controls (contained in DIV tag) and puts them outside FORM tag. So I guess this is the reason why then ASP.NET button doesn't do anything - it is placed outside form. So, do you have any suggestions how I can prevent this (or make that ASP.NET button work), other than using completely different modal dialog? Thanks in advance.

  Disclaimer: I'm completely clueless about .net and COM. I have a vendor's application that appears to be written in .net and I'm trying to wrap it with a web form (a cgi-bin Perl script) so I can eventually launch this vendor's app from a separate computer. I'm on a Windows Server 2003 R2 SE SP1 system and I'm using Apache 2.2 for the web server and ActivePerl 5.10.0.1004 for the cgi script. My cgi script calls the vendor's app that resides on the same machine using the Perl backtick operator. ... $result = "Result: " . `$vendorsPath/$vendorsExecutable $arg1 $arg2`; ... Right now I'm just running IE web browser locally on the server machine and accessing "http://localhost/cgi-bin/myPerlScript.pl". The vendor's app fails and logs a debug message that includes the following stack trace (I changed a couple names so as to not give away the vendor's identity): ... System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. ---> System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80043A1D): 0x80040154 - Class not registered --- End of inner exception stack trace --- at System.RuntimeType.InvokeDispMethod(String name, BindingFlags invokeAttr, Object target, Object[] args, Boolean[] byrefModifiers, Int32 culture, String[] namedParameters) at System.RuntimeType.InvokeMember(String name, BindingFlags invokeAttr, Binder binder, Object target, Object[] args, ParameterModifier[] modifiers, CultureInfo culture, String[] namedParameters) at VendorsTool.Engine.Core.VendorsEngine.LoadVendorsServices(String fileName, String& projectCommPath) ... When I run the vendors app from the Windows command line on the server machine with the exact same arguments that the cgi script is passing it runs just fine, so there's something about invoking their app via the web script that is causing a problem. This problem is likely security related because the whole thing runs just fine on a Windows XP Pro machine (both command line and web invocation). I actually developed my web script there and got it completely working there before I tried moving it to the Windows Server 2003 machine. So what's different about the Windows Server 2003 machine that would keep the vendor's .net app from being executed successfully by a web cgi script? Can I fix this problem somehow to make it work on my server or will the vendor have to make a change to their .net app and ship out a new version? I'm probably the only person in the world who is trying to execute this vendor's app from a separate program, so I hate to bother the vendor with the issue if there's a workaround that I can implement myself here on my server machine. Plus, I'm in kind of a hurry and I don't want to wait 4 or 6 months for the vendor to put in a fix and deploy a new version. Thanks for any advise you can give.

• android: what is INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_NO_CERTIFICATES error?

  I was trying to change my default/main/startup (whatever you call it) activity by editing the androidmanifest.xml file. All i did was change the android:name property. however, this completely broke the entire app. when i try to install it fails and reads Installation error: INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_NO_CERTIFICATES when i tried to change it back to its previous state, it was still giving me the same error... what have i done!?!?!
