  • Plug-in device to front USB computer *sometimes* restarts

    I've got a strange problem that very occasionally (maybe once a month) when I plug-in something to the front USB on my computer, the computer suddently restarts. This also happens when I touch the front USB ports sometimes. This has been going on for a few years and a lot of the components in my PC have changed. I thought it was my home wiring, but I moved last year and it still happened. I thought maybe it was the motherboard, but that was upgraded 9 months ago and it still happens. I thought it was my case, but I changed that recently and it still happens. I thought maybe it was my PSU, but I upgraded that yesterday and it still happens. I'm pretty sure this is an electro-static thing, but I thought that modern computers have protection against this sort of thing. Maybe I should move my case off the floor (carpet) and stop wearing songs all the time. Edit: Just to clarify this is a computer that I built. The components have been upgraded throughout the years and it's not much the same computer anymore. This doesn't happen very often, but it is annoying, because I don't know what the cause is. Anyone have any ideas?

  • Advice for outdoor wifi hardware and topology

    I haven't setup any wifi networks other than an access point or two at any single location, so I'd like advice on how to setup an outdoor/weatherproof network in an area approximately 150 feet by 200 feet. The interesting thing is there are a pair of pools in the middle of the coverage area. Here is a picture: blue is pool, green is coverage area, yellow is building with wired access. Can anyone advise me on weatherproof APs, antennas and placement for best coverage of the pool deck? I've looked at the Meraki stuff, but I'm thinking it's overkill.

  • Cloud hosting and single hardware point of failure?

    From talking to sales I thought Rackspace Cloud was running on a SAN and compute nodes (as VMWare's offerings do), only to find out it doesn't, so when the host server goes down for maintenance all cloud servers on the server go down (in our case for 2.5 hours). I understand Amazon EC2 also has this single-server point of failure. Which cloud hosting solutions don't rely on a single server? I've yet to find a list by architecture Is there a term that distinguishes between these types of 'cloud'? Is one of these 'grid computing' and the other 'virtualisation'? Can a SAN backed solution provide the same reliability as 2 mirrored cloud servers on (say) Rackspace Cloud? I am more familiar with the VMWare architecture and would like to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. I understand the standard architecture is to have multiple cloud servers and mirrored data between them; until we need multiple database servers I'm wondering if a SAN/node hosting solution would provide the lack of downtime we need without the added complexity.

  • How to introduce a computer illiterate 50-year old to programming [closed]

    The other day my dad asked me a question that I would have never expected from him. "How can I learn C++?" My dad is turning 56 this year and computers are a distant concept for him. He doesn't know how to use a phone very well besides calling numbers (no speed dial or contacts); though he has started to learn computers a little better - to the point that he knows how to open the internet (in Windows) and browse around (and has successfully completed several job applications entirely on his own online, of which he was offered positions too). But still, these are too narrow-windowed experiences to mean much, really. While he may not have the background, my dad knows how to read. And I mean reading as a skill, not just an ability. He has little to no college education (financial problems, family, etc.) and was fortunate enough to finish high school, but still taught himself to become a master electrician and has been one for almost 30 years now. He did the same with guitar, learning to play at a very professional level and has been praised for his skill. In high school, he picked up a weight lifting book - and was the only person in his high school at the time to qualify officially as an "athlete" by national standards. In all cases, he just needed something to read. Something to teach him. He absorbs information like a sponge. I have no doubt in my dad's motivation or capability of doing this, so my general goal is simply: Get my dad into the world of computers, and get him on the road to programming. I strongly believe that once I get him through the fundamentals, his drive and reading skill will keep him going on this own. So I'm asking you all: where should I start with all this? And what are the best resources out there? Should I get him to start Linux instead of Windows? Is C++ a bad idea? Remember, he needs to (IMO) learn computers first, and then get that first grasp (the "Hello world" experience) of programming. For money's sake and at top preference, I'd like free online resources that he can read, but by all means any good suggestions in print or paid-for-online are welcome (that I could possibly look into later to purchase). And also, I intend to start him off with C++ (no Python, Java, etc.), because I know it the best and will be able to help him along the way with code. (I have minimal knowledge right now in other languages). Edit: I'm getting a lot of persistent suggestions to use Python. The only reason I wanted to do C++ is that I KNOW it and can be THERE when my dad needs help. My VERY FIRST exposure to programming ever was Java. I learned Java, and I got good at it. I open to other suggestions, but please provide an effective application of your suggestions. EDIT #2: I understand my approach/thinking/knowledge could be lacking here. I'm a sophomore level undergraduate CS major. If you don't agree with anything in my post, tell me why - give me ideas, information - that's why I'm asking in the first place. To narrow down my general goal to specific reachable goals.

  • Ubuntu 14.04 and Android, can't see phone on my computer

    I have installed gMTP and tried to follow this tutorial to solve this problem: http://www.webupd8.org/2013/01/upgrade-to-gvfs-with-mtp-support-in.html But neither worked. I tried to connect both my phone (Nexus 4) and my dad's phone (Galaxy Note 2), and neither is being detected by Ubuntu. They don't show up on my files and on gMTP. Is there another fix? or something more specific for Android 4.3 and Ubuntu 14.04

  • Downsides of using Lubuntu on a good computer [closed]

    I have a simple question but yet, hard to find any anwser on it. Are there any downsides of using Lubuntu on a good laptop ? Ihe one I purchased would run Ubuntu really good, but I like the look & feel of Lubuntu. I mainly use it to code or watch movie / listen music, usually a load of applications opened at the same time, 20+ tabs on multiple web browser, etc.. Since Lubuntu is lightweight, i wonder if it lacks of some useful functions or something like that.

  • Computer crashing after a few minutes of logging in

    I have a fresh install of 12.04.1 on my machine. It is constantly crashing after logging in. I noticed it crashed repeatedly when using Minitube and would crash in Chrome. It seems to be that anything graphics related is causing it? I've booted the system 7 times and each time it would crash within 5-10 minutes after logging in. I have no swap and it's a dual-boot system with Windows 7. My system specs: AMD Phenom XII 925 8GB DDR3 (new) AMD Radeon HD 7770 GPU (new) Seagate 1TB Barracuda HDD (new) Catalyst Drivers

  • Experience with asymmetrical (non-identical hardware) SQL Server 2005 / Win 2003 cluster

    I am reasonably good at dealing with SQL Server clusters; I am wondering if folks have experience, good or bad, using a mix of different models of servers from the same vendor in one SQL 2005 cluster. Suppose: I have one more powerful, more RAM, more shizzle box and one less powerful, less memory, less shizzle box bound together in a 2-node cluster. These would be HP DL380 and 580 machines (not that it should matter) I understand AND automate the process of managing memory for each SQL instance, so there's no memory contention when SQL instances fail over. Basically I am thinking a CLR proc will monitor the instances and self-regulate memory caps on each instance, so that they won't page or step on one another. I get the fact the instances might be slower and or under memory pressure if they share a "lesser" node, and that's OK. The business can deal with a slower instance in a server-problem scenario. Reasonable? Any "gotchas" to watch out for? More info 10/28: doing some experiments with a test cluster I find that reconfiguring max/min memory is OK PROVIDED the instance isn't already under memory pressure. If I torture the system with a huge query that demands a big chunk of RAM, and simultaneously adjust the memory allocation to a smaller value than what is being actively used, it's possible to run the instance out of memory and have it halt and restart itself (unhappy situation). Many ugly out-of-memory messages in the error log, crashing, burning... It's an extreme case, but good to know. Seems, then, that it would only be really safe to set this on startup of the instance, as in have a startup script that says "I am on node1, so my RAM settings are X or I am on node two, so they are Y," like this: http://sqlblog.com/blogs/aaron_bertrand...   • Can't access computer

    I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 on an Intel NUC and it won't boot! The last successful boot was earlier today but now each time I try it gets stuck on the Grub menu where it prompts for memory check etc. This is not a dual boot system, so this screen shouldn't ever appear, and it never has before. It's GRUB version 2.02~beta2-9, which is a little disconcerting, as I'm on the stable sources. Unfortunately the keyboard (I've tried 2 keyboards just in case) is not responding at this point in the boot process, so I can't select the "Ubuntu" menu option in Grub. The keyboard works during the bios stage, so I can configure it to boot from USB, and I tried a flash drive with 14.04 on it. The flash drive works in my laptop but is completely ignored by the NUC (I tried all 3 USB ports!). It seems that I have no way of getting into the machine at all! The Intel support site was my first option, but the site is down. I expect it's a long shot, but if anyone has any ideas I'd be very grateful.

  • Computer restarts when I choose my Lucid install from GRUB

    Hey, I have 4 OS's on my netbook, it's really more a toy. However, in my main OS (Ubuntu Lucid) is some data I don't like to lose. Today, whenever I choose this install from GRUB, the netbook (Asus eeePC 1001P if it's of help) waits 5 seconds (no kernel messages) and then reboots. The other entries (backtrack, Linux From Scratch, Windows XP) work fine. Can anyone hint me to where the error could be? It's not GRUB, right? So a reinstall wouldn't help? Is it the kernel? I'm afraid I didn't remember when and what the most recent automatic updates were.

  • Network configuration with limited hardware

    I have cable internet and I have two PC. One of them has wireless and ethernet, the other pc has ethernet only. Also, I have a dsl modem that has wireless builtin (some common speedstream model). My goal is to connect all of them so that both have internet access. As I understand, I have two options: connect speedstream to the cable and then connect other PC's to speedstream; OR, connect pc with wireless to the cable and then connect the other pc that has ethernet only using ethernet+wireless through speestream. First one seems to be easy, but it doesn't seem to work. What about the other choice? Is it possible to do it?

  • Is the "impossible object" possible in computer graphics?

    This may be a silly question but I want to know the answer to it. I saw this thing called the "impossible object", while they're many different images of this online, it's suppost to be impossible geometry. Here is an example: Now as far as logic goes, I know you don't have to obey it in games, such as a flying cow, or an impossible object. So that's out of the way, but what stands in my way is whether or not there is a way to draw this onto a 3D scene. Like is there a way to represent it as a 3D object? Thanks!

  • Wi-Fi not working only on Ubuntu computer?

    The Wi-Fi at our house does not work on my Asus notebook running Ubuntu 12.04. It works fine on all other devices except this one. Internet worked fine before I had Ubuntu and I had Windows 7, but we also had a different ISP and place. My roommate's Windows 7 notebook and netbook both work fine with the internet and so do all of our phones and iPods. I do not know what is wrong because it works fine EVERYWHERE else, but when I am connected to my own router at my house it is either EXTREMELY slow or it just loads and loads and loads. I have all of the correct drivers and all that so why is it just this one connection that is a problem. I do not know if this matters but the ISP is Comcast and so is the Modem/wireless-router. Any help is much appreciated, thank you.

    I have been trying to install ubuntu along windows but failed. the issue is that I get a graphical glitch with the colours of the ubuntu loading screen while installing from usb and no progress is made, the pc freezes. I've tryied the nomodeset solution, but when I have to reboot I get the same problem. I've tried ubuntu 13.10, 13.04, 12.04 etc...both generic and for amd: nothing worked... any idea how this could be resolved or which distribution/iso I should try for my system? thank you.   • USB Drive that simultaneously connects to more than one computer

    Background: I have a portable USB drive that I use to make sure I have access to common files whenever at home, work, travel etc for cases when I may not have Internet/Network access of any kind. There are some cases when I have to work simultaneously on a laptop and a desktop computer, and for those cases I usually have to unplug this USB hard drive and move it between the two. Question: dual-computer USB drive? Is there a USB-based solution that would enable me to use this portable drive between two computers simultaneously? If there is not a USB-based solution, does anyone have alternative suggestions, consistent with the underlying rationale? Rationale: Sometimes I have to work on a desktop computer with locked-down networking capabilities (such as at the local photocopy shop) and it can be difficult to get a network configuration that allows dual-computer access without breaking things, or accidentally making my USB drive visible to the entire network. Basically what I need is a very simply LAN that is guaranteed to work regardless of the rules or constraints set by the network administrator for wherever I happen to be at the time.   • Hardware advice for bitmap / openGL image processing server?

    I am trying to work out a build for a processing server to handle bitmap processing as well as openGL rendering for chroma-keying images and Photoshop automation. My searches here and on Google have turned up surprisingly few results, and seeing that there aren't tags for bitmap or image processing I take it this is a specialized application. The bitmap processing is very cpu-intensive while the chroma-keying and Photoshop stuff is gpu-intensive. I doubt this is a case of over-optimization as our company batches thousands of images a day (currently on individual workstations) and any saving in processing time and workstation down-time would be beneficial. Does anyone have any experience with this type of processing server? Any special considerations that would go into a build like this or am I over-thinking it?
