• Progressive Enhancement with box-shadow

  I would like to use WebKit's box-shadow css property for a little drop-down. The code would look like: .drop_down{ -webkit-box-shadow: 1px 1px 4px #888; box-shadow: 1px 1px 4px #888; } However, for browsers that do not have this capability, I would like to use borders to approximate this drop shadow, like so: .drop_down{ border-top: 1px solid #bbb; border-left: 1px solid #bbb; border-right: 2px solid #bbb; border-bottom: 2px solid #bbb; } The problem is, I don't want the border-based shadow to show up for the browsers that DO support box-shadow. I would like to avoid browser sniffing because I assume it's hard to cover all the cases. What is the simplest way to do this? I prefer a javascript-less solution, but I will consider simple javascript-based ones too.

• Pros and cons of programmatically enforcing foreign key than in database

  It is causing so much trouble in terms of development just by letting database enforcing foreign key. Especially during unit test I can’t drop table due to foreign key constrains, I need to create table in such an order that foreign key constrain warning won’t get triggered. In reality I don’t see too much point of letting database enforcing the foreign key constrains. If the application has been properly designed there should not be any manual database manipulation other than select queries. I just want to make sure that I am not digging myself into a hole by not having foreign key constrains in database and leaving it solely to the application’s responsibility. Am I missing anything? P.S. my real unit tests (not those that use mocking) will drop existing tables if the structure of underlying domain object has been modified.

• Unit Test ouput in MSBuild/TFS 2008

  I have a build in TFS 2008 which includes the running of a UnitTest project. I have configured my build as such that in the drop folder after each build, I get a StyleCop.log, FxCop.log and would like to place the trx or output from the unit tests here also. I can see that my unit tests are running as part of the build, however currently I cannot find were the output is saved to or find a way of setting the ouput to my drop location ($(DropLocation)\$(BuildNumber)\MyUnitTests.txt) My unit tests are included by using the following:- <RunTest>true</RunTest> ... <ItemGroup> <TestContainer Include="$(OutDir)\%2aMyUnitTests.dll" /> </ItemGroup> Can somebody help explain how I can achieve this.

• Is it possible to drag windows between workspaces when using Compiz?

  When I used Metacity, I could drag windows between workspaces using the small icon view of my workspaces. I recently started using Compiz for all the cool desktop effects, however this drag and drop feature isn't working. I use the cube effect for switching workspaces, but I noticed the wall effect doesn't allow it either. Is this just a missing feature from Compiz or is there a setting somewhere that I can enable it? I know that I can enable dragging windows across edges to the next workspace, and the expose feature to drag windows between workspaces. However, the drag and drop on the icon view is really powerful, and I would love to have it back along with all the great Compiz special effects.

  Hi there, Is there anyway, using google analytics, to track a user's journey/selections through a long form so I can see where they drop off? I've created a 'contact us' form which starts with drop down menu which requires the user to make a choice i.e. apply for job, apply for funding etc. and then each option requires the user to fill out a form, which is completed over serval steps. Is there a way to track a user's individual form choices from their initial selection on the Contact Us page through to the form being submitted? That way I could see where in the form journey the users are dropping off.

Questions: To get started, I set up a local directory and do git clone git://github.com/mikl/drupal.git ... Will this clone all of the branches? Or will it only clone master? The web front-end for github gives me a "drop down" menu that allows me to switch branches ... Does changing this drop-down actually change which branch I will be grabbing when I run git clone? If I want a new copy of this repository on my local machine, but I am interested in only two branches of this repository and I want to ignore all the rest, what command do I use to ensure I clone only those two branches and nothing else (assume one of the branches is master)?

• SelectedValue of DropDownList is not the one I selected when Enabled=false

  Hiya, I have a few DropDownLists on a webform each pointing to a SqlDataSource. Some of these datasources use one of these DropDownLists for a select parameter, filtering the list to specific categories. For certain users two of these DropDownLists are to be automatically set and disabled. When I submit the form with the drop downs enabled it works fine but when they are disabled the SelectedValue of the DropDownList is being reset to the first one in the list. My DropDownLists are constructed as follows: <asp:DropDownList ID="ddlManager" runat="server" DataSourceID="dsManagers" EnableViewState="false" DataValueField="ManagerID" DataTextField="MgrName" AppendDataBoundItems="false" ondatabound="ddlManager_DataBound" > The drop down lists add an extra item on the data bound event as follows: protected void ddlManager_DataBound(object sender, EventArgs e) { this.ddlManager.Items.Insert(0, new ListItem("--Manager--", "--Manager--")); } Can anyone shed any light as to why this is happening? How do I force WPF to render the text that gets displayed with drop shadow effect to retain Cleartype anti-aliasing, instead of that ugly blurry gray sub-pixel anti-aliasing? Some believe it's blurry because of the drop shadow -- this is not true. It's blurry only because ClearType is not used. This is how it looks like in Firefox when shadow AND ClearType: ClearType enabled text is colorful -- but that blurry text is not, because it does not use ClearType -- it uses gray sub-pixel anti-aliasing and that's not how ClearType works: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ClearType The question is: how do I enable ClearType for this text?

• Invert regexp in vim

  There's a few "how do I invert a regexp" questions here on stackoverflow, but I can't find one for vim (if it does exist, by goggle-fu is lacking today). In essence I want to match all non-printable characters and delete them. I could write a short script, or drop to a shell and use tr or something similar to delete, but a vim solution would be dandy :-) Vim has the atom \p to match printable characters, however trying to do this :s/[^\p]//g to match the inverse failed and just left me with every 'p' in the file. I've seen the (?!xxx) sequence in other questions, and vim seems to not recognise this sequence. I've not found seen an atom for non-printable chars. In the interim, I'm going to drop to external tools, but if anyone's got any trick up their sleeve to do this, it'd be welcome :-) Ta!

• Custom activity designers in Workflow Foundation 3.5: How do they work?

  Intent of this post: I realise that Workflow Foundation is not extremely popular on StackOverflow and that there will probably be not many answers, or none at all. This post is intended as a resource to people trying to customise workflow activities' appearance through custom designer classes. Goals: I am attempting to create a custom designer class for Workflow activities to achieve the following: Make activities look less technical. For example, I don't necessarily want to see the internal object name as the activity's "title" -- instead, I'd like to see something more descriptive. Display the values of certain properties beneath the title text. I would like to see some properties' values directly underneath the title so that I don't need to look somewhere else (namely, at the Properties window). Provide custom drop areas and draw custom internal arrows. As an example, I would like to be able to have custom drop areas in very specific places. What I found out so far: I created a custom designer class deriving from SequentialActivityDesigner as follows: [Designer(typeof(SomeDesigner))] public partial class SomeActivity: CompositeActivity { ... } class PlainDesigner : SequentialActivityDesigner { ... } Through overriding some properties and the OnPaint method, I found out about the following correspondences between the properties and how the activity will be displayed: Figure 1. Relationship between some properties of an SequentialActivityDesigner and the displayed activity. Possible solutions for goal #1 (make activities look less technical) and goal #2 (display values of properties beneath title text): The displayed title can be changed through the Title property. If more room is required to display additional information beneath the title, the TitleHeight property can be increased (ie., override the property and make it return base.TitleHeight + n, where n is some positive integer). Override the OnPaint method and draw additional text in the area reserved through TitleHeight. Open questions: What are the connectors, connections, and connection points used for? They seem to be necessary, but for what purpose? While the drop targets can be got through the GetDropTargets method, it seems that this is not necessarily where the designer will actually place dropped activities. When an activity is dragged across a workflow, the designer displays little green plus signs where activities can be dropped; how does it figure out the locations of these plus signs? How does the designer figure out where to draw connector lines and arrows?

I want to make it so that when I change the value of the country, a new drop down list appears below it, showing a list of companies whose country of origin is the particular selected company. The thing is that I do not want to rely too much on controller actions because I'm using it in a Template Helper which is a "headless" view. Can I bind it somehow?

• Android and SQLite using the SQLiteOpenHelper

  I have a SQLite database, and several tables within that database. I am developing a DBAdapter for each table within the database. (reference Reto Meier's Professional Android 2 Application Development, Listing 7.1). I am using the adb shell to interface with the database from the command line and see that the database is being populated as I expect. Occasionally, I want to drop a table so that I can ensure it's being built properly, from scratch. The problem is that SQLiteOpenHelper only checks to see if the database exists. Is there a typical solution to writing a helper to also see that the table(s) exists? Basically once I drop a table, the helper checks to see that the database exists and assumes all is well. Also, the CREATE_DATABASE string used in the reference above only creates the one table. Should I consider using the DBAdapter for an adapter to ALL of my tables? That doesn't seem as clean to me. • Waiting on multiple asynchronous calls to complete before continuing

  So, I have a page that loads and through jquery.get makes several requests to populate drop downs with their values. $(function() { LoadCategories($('#Category')); LoadPositions($('#Position')); LoadDepartments($('#Department')); LoadContact(); }; It then calls LoadContact(); Which does another call, and when it returns it populates all the fields on the form. The problem is that often, the dropdowns aren't all populated, and thus, it can't set them to the correct value. What I need to be able to do, is somehow have LoadContact only execute once the other methods are complete and callbacks done executing. But, I don't want to have to put a bunch of flags in the end of the drop down population callbacks, that I then check, and have to have a recursive setTimeout call checking, prior to calling LoadContact(); Is there something in jQuery that allows me to say, "Execute this, when all of these are done."?

How is this best accomplished from a shell script? When ever I change the drop down value from 'Select' to another I am displaying my grid view with people picker. Everything is working fine.   Does anyone know of a way to chain the proprietary filter properties in CSS. For example I have a div.example and I want to give it a background gradient and a drop shadow. • memory usage in C# (.NET) app is very high, until I call System.GC.Collect()

  I've written an app that spins a few threads each of which read several MB of memory. Each thread then connects to the Internet and uploads the data. this occurs thousands of times and each upload takes some time I'm seeing a situation where (verified with windbg/sos and !dumpheap) that the Byte[] are not getting collected automatically, causing 100/150MB of memory to be reported in task manager if I call System.GC.Collect() i'm seeing a huge drop in memory, a drop of over 100MB I dont like calling System.GC.Collect() and my PC has tons of free memory. however if anyone looks at TaskManager they're going to be concerned, thinking my app is leaking horribly. tips?

• SQL Server Efficiently dropping a group of rows with millions and millions of rows

  I recently asked this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2519183/ms-sql-share-identity-seed-amongst-tables (Many people wondered why) I have the following layout of a table: Table: Stars starId bigint categoryId bigint starname varchar(200) But my problem is that I have millions and millions of rows. So when I want to delete stars from the table Stars it is too intense on SQL Server. I cannot use built in partitioning for 2005+ because I do not have an enterprise license. When I do delete though, I always delete a whole category Id at a time. I thought of doing a design like this: Table: Star_1 starId bigint CategoryId bigint constaint rock=1 starname varchar(200) Table: Star_2 starId bigint CategoryId bigint constaint rock=2 starname varchar(200) In this way I can delete a whole category and hence millions of rows in O(1) by doing a simple drop table. My question is, is it a problem to have hundreds of thousands of tables in your SQL Server? The drop in O(1) is extremely desirable to me. Maybe there's a completely different solution I'm not thinking of?
