• I'm a professional Java developer, should I learn .NET?

  Java and .NET seem to have a great number of parallels especially in the web application area. Both languages have many of the same technologies especially in terms of open source libraries (JUnit and NUnit, Hibernate and NHibernate) but there are also plenty of differences and different approaches to solving certain software development problems. As a Java developer I get the feeling I'm missing out on learning about web application development from the .NET point of view and I could learn a lot about the general principles by learning two languages rather than getting stuck in the details of Java and not seeing the bigger picture. So the first question is, do you agree? Does learning two separate but similar languages such as Java and .NET make you a better programmer? Secondly, I'm worried that if I choose to take, for example, a MCPD ASP.NET 3.5 certification it won't actually help me get work doing .NET development because it goes against all my existing experience. Is trying to broaden your skills a good career choice or is it a better decision to choose one technology and stick with that?

  I have an interview tomorrow morning and just found out that I will also be taking an hour-long Java proficiency test! I am a certified C# .NET developer but have barely touched Java since college. (Yes, I am thinking about switching from .NET development to Java!) I'm not going to be able to effectively cram the whole of the Java library by tomorrow morning. What are some key ideas that I should study that might actually make a difference in such a short time frame? (The examiners will be taking into account that I have had little exposure to Java.) • Software developer trying to charge us $4,000 for a quoted project of $1,600. What options do I have

  This is totally out in left field... but I'm grasping at straws here... We hired a software developer and later found out he lives in Pakistan. He quoted us $1,600 for a project… and now that the project is done, he sent us a bill for $4,000. He didn't let us know he went over the quote… he just continued working without notifying us. Now he expects us to pay the $4,000 when he originally told us, via email, that it would NOT be more than $1,600. What options do I have?

  Hi All, I'm a .NET developer with 10 years experience developing Web & Mobile Apps. I'm looking to branch into iPhone (and possibly Android) development. I'm looking at two products: Appcelerator Titanium (http://www.appcelerator.com/) and MonoTouch (http://monotouch.net/) I like MonoTouch because of it's standing in the Mono development communitity and it's C#. In saying that Appcelerator looks very straight forward using HTML and Javascript and targets Android too (which is overtaking the iPhone). The apps I'm looking to develop are line of business applications with data entry, syncing with back office, etc. Can anyone give their opinion on the pro's / con's of using these tools or any experiences. • IE Display bug - solved when using the "developer tools"?

  I have some Javascript/CSS issues with IE (no suprises?). So when I see the error in IE8, I go to Tools Developer Tools. Then I navigate to the correct DIV. I click on it, look around ... then I look again at my page, and the problem is fixed! This makes debugging pretty difficult... To see the display error, go to http://www.makemeheal.com/mmh/home.do in IE, and look at the "Your Recent History" module.

• Will iPhone OS4 make your life easier or harder as a lone app developer?

  I am interested to hear what people feel about the new iPhone OS4 release. It is obviously very exciting having access to all the new features, apparently (from apple.com) it has over 1500 new APIs. My original thoughts were "Wow, this is awesome", and I suppose it is. I was just getting comfortable with OS 3.2 development though, and now there is a raft of additional stuff to learn in order to keep up with the pack. So I am feeling quite frustrated! Do you think, when working as an individual app developer, having access to these additional features would improve your applications or just water down the quality? I guess being giving the opportunity to improve applications and provide better features should be welcomed. I think frustration comes from struggling to keep up with the continuous changes, but thats the industry we are in I suppose! Any thoughts/comments?

I like many of the things I'm hearing about document-based databases, especially when someone in a recent podcast mentioned huge performance benefits. If it makes any difference in your answer, I'm a C# developer primarily (today, anyhow). I'm used to ORM's like EF and Linq to SQL. Before ORMs, I rolled my own objects with generics and datareaders. • Lightweight Linux distro that includes developer tools? (or, the most BSD-like Linux)

  I cut my teeth on Minix and Slackware 1.1, but I've been in the OS X Wilderness for the last few years. I'm trying to standardize on a Linux distribution for personal and work-related use on less powerful laptops and under virtualization. So far, NetBSD and OpenBSD are the best fit for my purposes- but after plenty of frustration I've come to the conclusion that I need to stick with Linux to get the hardware and software support that comes with it. What I like about NetBSD/OpenBSD that I'd like to keep: X, but no default KDE, GNOME or XFCE! A sensible /etc and dot file setup- startx calls xinit, xinit looks for ~/.xinitrc; nothing more complicated than that is needed. Command line tools and file-based configuration: I shouldn't need a GUI to connect to a WAP. Decent selection of binary packages; building from source is OK, but nothing source-only like Gentoo. pkg_add (BSD) and apt-get both have treated me well in the past. Modest RAM and HDD requirements: boot + X + awesome+ two xterms takes up 80 MB on OpenBSD and 240 MB on Debian 5 and Crunchbang In my experience, most "lightweight" and Live CDs focus on a nice desktop environment crammed into a CD or USB stick; once you add build-essentials you end up with something just about as bloated as Ubuntu or Debian full install. • Where is the best location to keep shared-developer website files in the linux hierarchy?

  I just started hosting files for a website on my server, and I'm not sure where is an appropriate place to keep them. At the moment, I have them in /var/www/name.of.virtualhost.site/www/. That's obviously not secure because anything below the final public /www/ folder is also available since the /var/www/ contents are already being served up. For example, /var/www/name.of.virtualhost.site/docs/site_policies.txt is accessible via something like defaultsite.com/name.of.virtualhost.site/docs/site_policies.txt. So where is a good place to store the files that make up a website? (when it's a site that only I'm developing, I can obviously just stick them in /home/my_username/sites/name.of.virtualhost.site/, but that doesn't work well when I want other developers to be working on the site's files as well) I'm running a LAMP stack, not that I expect it to matter.

  In a code review, what do you look for to assess a developer's expertise? Given an opportunity to look at a developer's work on a real-world project, what tell-tale signs are a tip-off to carelessness or lack of experience? Conversely, where do you look in the code to find evidence of a developer's skill or knowledge of best practices? For example, if I'm looking at a typical Rails app, I would be happy to see the developer is using RSpec (showing a commitment to using test-driven development and knowledge that RSpec is currently more popular than the default TestUnit). Given an opportunity to look at a developer's work on a real-world project, what tell-tale signs are a tip-off to carelessness or lack of experience?   The current release of Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse, though in technology preview, brings Oracle ADF binding to the Eclipse IDE. You can download the Software from the link below: Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse (12.1.1.1.0) Technical Preview New June 2012 Certified on Windows 7/XP/Vista, MacOS, and Linux. Supported on JDK 6. For many Eclipse users, ADF is new and therefore I expect them to need guidance and help in case they run into issues they don't know how to recover from. Similar, ADF users familiar with Oracle JDeveloper that want to give OEPE a try, will find things different in Eclipse and thus may have questions.  For both audiences I suggest to post issues to the OEPE forum on the Oracle Technology Network: I'll extend my OTN monitoring to include the OEPE forum on a daily basis to learn about developer needs, requirements and - of course - to catch bugs that need to be filed. From my side this is a part-time involvement, which means that the more ADF questions show on the forum, the more help I could need in answering them. The OTN forum for JDeveloper in my opnion wouldn't be the right place to go to unless the question is a generic ADF question that is not dependent on the integration in Eclipse.
