  This is a very, very broad question - what is the general algorithm of how a collision engine works? No code in specific, but rather, just a general idea of how a collision engine does what it does, constantly refreshing the points of an object and comparing it to other objects? (see, I have the general gist of it here.) A collision engine is basically an engine used in games (generally) so that your player (call him Bob), whenever bob moves into a wall, Bob stops, Bob does not walk through the wall. They also generally handle the gravity in a game and environmental things like that.

• Un-used Indexes on MDP_MATRIX Consuming Resources

  Disable un-used Indexes: As much as it is recommended to create relevant indexes, it is advised not to have too many indexes on the mdp_matrix table.  Too many indexes will cause long waits on the table as indexes needs to get updated every time the table is updated.  There are many seeded indexes on mdp_matrix, every out of the box data model level has an index on the matrix table.  If a level is unused in the specific data model of the implementation, it is advisable to disable that index.  If the customer is not sure if and how indexes are utilized, the DBA can monitor all indexes.  After a few cycles of operation, the DBA should go over that list and see which indexes have not been used.  Consider disabling them. There are scripts on the net to monitor indexes or use the monitoring usage clause in the alter index statement.

  Tomorrow morning I'm interviewing for a web development internship position and I'm seeking general advice pertaining to the questions that interviewers might ask, some questions I should ask them during the interview, and any general tips/suggestions that might help. They're looking for someone with knowledge mainly in HTML/CSS, Joomla, MySQL and PHP, all of which I have excluding Joomla (which I'm installing/doing as much research on as possible at the moment) and I was able to provide them a link to a site I'd been paid to build for a small business which they mentioned they were impressed with. I'd like to prepare myself for the interview as much as I possibly can but I'm wondering how much time I should spend rehashing elements of the languages they're looking for, or if it'd be a better use of my time to research their company and figure out how I'd respond to general questions. I feel that perhaps because I showed them a project I've completed that they'll know that I can grasp the technical side of what they're going for... but this is my first internship interview in this field so I'm not exactly sure what to expect. • sql developer cannot establish connection to oracle db with listener running

  I am working from home and connected to my work's vpn. I have tried to connect to the work db with sql developer (the latest version and the previous version) on the following environments: mac os x 10.8.5 (with sql developer launched and installed directly on the iMac. sql developer launched and installed directly on a vm on same computer (guest Ubuntu 12.04 LTS) sql developer launched and installed directly on a vm on same computer (guest Windows 7.0 Professional) I get Status Failure Test Failed : IO Error - The Network Adapter could not establish the connection. I have read dba forums and googled and the most common suggestion is that the oracle listener is not up and running. I can conclusively say this is not the case because I have the option of using remote desktop and accessing the oracle db in question on my work computer. If the listener was down, according to my DBA, no one would be able to connect. My sysadmin and dba are stumped so I assume it is something unique to my home system. The reason I do not want to continue with the remote desktop workaround is because remote desktop has an annoying (infuriating often) lag.

• SQL Server architecture - they want to move my database to new instance...Why?

  Our current production database environment contains about 10 similarily managed databases. Our agency has just purchased and is installing new blade chasses and wants to move my database to a new instance (leaving the other 9 on another). This decision is being driven by one of our IT staff, not a DBA. I am a project manager, not a DBA but I know enough to not necesarrily have a good feeling about this decision and I am urging our IT department to make a sound decision based on what is best for the database. Our IT department has stated that it is not good to have all our eggs in one basket, and has also stated that my database contains "regulatory data" so it should be on its own instance. A couple of truths: - None of the databases on the current instance are OLTP databases nor are any of them data warehouses - My database currently has joins/views to a couple of the other databases in the production environment So my questions are as follows: Am I wrong to disregard a statement about eggs in baskets? (hello, this is why we have maintenance plans/disaster recovery plans). I'll mention that other databases also have regulatory data too. What types of questions do I need to ask to determine if this is a sound decicion? (A DBA friend mentioned that if the service level agreement of said database does not radically differ from the others then why do they want to do this?) I have done some research on linked servers. What arguments should I bring forth about the fact that I have views setup that rely on data from other DBs currently?
